Organizers are provided Dr. Seuss’ One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish - themed creative materials to help develop exciting, custom World Oceans Day plans for their community. Oceans of Inspiration |3 World Oceans Day 2012 Manual World Oceans Day The concept for World Oceans Day was proposed in 1992 by the government of Canada at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, and it has been unofficially celebrated every year since then. World Oceans Day provides an opportunity each year to celebrate our world’s oceans and our personal connection to the sea. The Ocean Project, working closely with the World Ocean Network each year, helps to coordinate events and activities with aquariums, zoos, museums, conservation organizations, universities, schools and businesses. Together, through this collaboration, aquariums, zoos, and others widely circulated a petition to the United Nations urging them to officially recognize World Oceans Day. Tens of thousands of people from all parts of the world signed the petition and, as of 2009, World Oceans Day has been officially declared by the United Nations as June 8th each year! To help promote and coordinate this event, The Ocean Project created a dedicated website: www.WorldOceansDay.org. Reasons to Celebrate World Oceans Day The world’s oceans: • Generate most of the oxygen we breathe • Help feed us • Regulate our climate • Clean the water we drink • Offer us a pharmacopoeia of potential medicines • Provide limitless inspiration! Yet for too long, human society has taken the world’s oceans for granted. Oceans of Inspiration |4 World Oceans Day 2012 Manual World Oceans Day Take part in World Oceans Day events and activities this year and help protect our oceans for the future! It’s up to each one of us to help ensure that our ocean is protected and conserved for future generations. World Oceans Day allows us to: Change perspective - encourage individuals to think about what the ocean means to them and what it has to offer all of us with hopes of conserving it for present and future generations. Learn - discover the wealth of diverse and beautiful ocean creatures and habitats, how our daily actions affect them, and how we are all interconnected. Change our ways - we are all linked to the ocean! By taking care of your backyard, you are acting as a caretaker of our ocean. Making small modifications to your everyday habits will greatly benefit our blue planet. Celebrate - whether you live inland or on the coast, you are affected by the ocean. Take time to think about how, and then organize or participate in activities that celebrate our world’s oceans. The aim is to challenge participants to view ocean protection as a way of life. Oceans of Inspiration |5 World Oceans Day 2012 Manual World Oceans Day Theme From the young child whose first visit to the tide pools leads to a career in marine biology, to the surfer whose passion results in him being recognized as a global ocean advocate, to the “Doctor” who whimsically pens a classic called One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish, the ocean’s power to inspire is undeniable. This year’s theme for World Oceans Day, Oceans of Inspiration, taps into the oceans’ deep connection to the human spirit and the boundless inspirational power of our natural world’s greatest resource. Every day, in every part of the world, young people draw inspiration from the ocean. Some technical, some artistic, some life-changing—all compelling and moving. The research conducted by The Ocean Project shows us the great promise of reaching young minds, many of whom are already active and influential in driving opinion and attitudes in their families and taking action toward the conservation of our oceans. Oceans of Inspiration, connects with children of all ages and creatively engages them with activities as varied and fascinating as the oceanic world itself. Oceans of Inspiration is an invitation to children of all ages and can be directed to various grade levels, communities, events and areas of study. This year’s activities are organized into three different age levels, with overlapping activities for the whole family. We hope event organizers will use the materials provided as building blocks to create their own custom Oceans of Inspiration-World Oceans Day events. With the help of Dr. Seuss, Random House, The Ocean Project and AZA partners, we are committed in our effort to reach out and collaborate with young people, helping inspire them to care for our world’s oceans, now and throughout their lives. By request, these fun attention-getters are back with a fresh Oceans of Inspiration design. Let the colors of the ocean provide the inspiration to embellish and personalize these celebratory World Oceans Day crowns. | 10 World Oceans Day 2012 Manual Group Activity Activities World Oceans Day - Community Mural This activity for all ages, entails creating a central space for a community World Oceans Day mural — an inspirational centerpiece to your organization’s celebration. Facilitators can create a blue, ocean mural background using rolled craft paper that is positioned on a visible wall space. To get the mural started, add a World Oceans Day poster, and have staffers select favorite poems, lyrics, and ocean inspired images so the mural has a few sample images affixed prior to your event. World Oceans Day attendees will be asked to help create content for the mural through various activities. Included in this manual are specific ideas on how different age groups can creatively contribute to the World Oceans Day mural. The following activity pages include - Fish coloring sheets (Ages 3-5) - Ideas for creating inspirational fish collages using various materials (Ages 6-8) - Ocean wish and pledge sheets (Ages 9+) Encourage self-expression, and provide as many tools for participation to your guests as possible. Ideally, your mural will eventually be covered in artwork, scrap visuals and written “posts” that reflect the inspirational power of the oceans. Utilize these mural additions and images to add content to your World Oceans Day Facebook and Twitter posts. Oceans of Inspiration | 11 World Oceans Day 2012 Manual Group Activity Activities World Oceans Day - Fish Stencils and Face Painting Perhaps no one has been more whimsically inspired by the creatures of the sea, real or imagined, than Dr. Seuss. A One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish themed face painting exercise can entertain and ignite young imaginations. Kids can select designs from the supplied laminated stencils, and with the help of volunteers and face paints, visitors can sport their favorite colorful fish pals. After kids receive their new look, encourage them to find sea creatures in the aquarium who share the same shapes and colors.
