Dear Parishioners,
There is a delightful story about a mother who bought a ticket
to a concert by the great Polish pianist, Ignace Paderewski. She
took her five year old son with her, hoping the experience would
encourage him in his own young efforts at music. She was delighted to see how close to the stage their seats were. Then she
met an old friend and got so involved talking with her that she
failed to notice that her son had slipped away to do some exploring. When eight o’clock arrived, the lights dimmed, the audience
hushed to a whisper, and the spotlight came on. Only then did the woman see her five year old son on the
stage, sitting on the piano bench, innocently picking out “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star.” She gasped in total
disbelief. But before she could retrieve her son, Paderewski walked onto the stage. Walking over to the piano, he whispered to the boy, “Don’t stop! Keep playing!” Then leaning over the boy, Paderewski reached
out his left hand and began to fill in the bass. A few seconds later he reached around the other side of the
boy, encircling him, and added a running obbligato.
Together, the great maestro and the tiny five-year-old mesmerized the audience with their playing. When
they finished the audience broke into thunderous applause. Years later almost all those present forgot the
pieces that Paderewski played that night, but no one forgot “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star.”
That image of the great maestro and the tiny five year old at the piano makes a beautiful image of the Holy
Spirit and the Church. It makes a beautiful image of how the Holy Spirit unites with the Church to make
beautiful music.
Going back to that image we see that the boy resembles the disciples. When Jesus departed from their
midst, they were like spiritual children. Their knowledge of God and how to spread God’s kingdom was terribly deficient. It was like the little boy’s knowledge of music. And, of course, the great Polish maestro resembles the Holy Spirit coming upon the disciples encircling them with love, whispering encouragement to
them and transforming their feeble human efforts into something beautiful.
There’s a tremendous lesson here.
We look at the world and see so many problems that need to be addressed. We also look at our talents and
see how inadequate they are in the face of all these problems. It is here that we need to recall the image of
the little boy and Paderewski.
Musically, the little boy’s skill was minimal. But Paderewski built upon it and turned it into something
beautiful—something that completely mesmerized the sophisticated audience that gathered in the hall that
night. In a similar way, the Holy Spirit can take whatever we have—no matter how small—build upon it, and
transform it into something powerful and beautiful.
This is the good news that we celebrate on this feast of Pentecost.
It is the good news that Jesus has sent upon his Church, the promised Holy Spirit.
We are not alone; the Holy Spirit is leaning over us, taking our small contribution, and transforming it into
something we never dreamed possible.
We are called by the Holy Spirit like the disciples to go into the world and with the help of the Holy Spirit,
make beautiful music.

held in common between a saint and

Our Spanish National Honor
Society students sponsored an outo f -u n i f o rm f u n d ra i se r wh i c h
garnered $2,023.00, in order to
assist with an outreach program
recommended to us by Fr. Miki.
Funds raised were sent to
“Guraderai Albergue San Juan
Bautista del Barrio Ytororó of Pilar” a
nursery in Pilar, Paraquay. It was
founded by Father Ottorino Zamboni
C.Ss.R. in October of 2007. The
nursery takes care of children for
mothers while they work earning
money for their family in positions as
domestic employees, recyclable
picking, and patchwork sewing for
which they earn the equivalent of
$50 to $100 a month. We are very
happy that we can make a
difference in the lives of these
families through our fundraising
efforts.
It is hard to believe our seniors
will complete their academic career
at St. Mary’s this week. They have
one more regular day of school and
then exams to wrap it all up. We
pray that God will be with them as
they spread their wings and begin
the next chapter of their life.

The summer season is a good

supplies and see what could be
recycled for needy Appalachian
school children and teachers in
Virginia, West Virginia, and western
Maryland. The need is there and our
interest is here in this parish to
reach out for the third straight year
to fill a need that doesn't go away.
We will be collecting supplies of all
types the last two Wednesdays of
September from 8:30 to noon at St.
John Neumann's Seelos Hall during
Ranger Rosary's work sessions.

Blood Drive
Did you know? One blood donation can save up to
three lives!
Each year 3,000 patients at AAMC - your loved
ones, your friends, your neighbors and, maybe even
you - receive life-saving blood transfusions. That's
nearly 7,300 units of blood needed each year in our
community. Because there is no substitute for human
blood, these patients are counting on caring people like
you to donate this precious resource.
On Sunday, June 5th, sign-up starts in Seelos Hall
and then you proceed to the AAMC BLOODMOBILE
BUS which will be located in the middle of the parking
lot adjacent to Seelos Hall. Our medical team partner is
the Anne Arundel Medical Center’s certified Blood
Mobile Team. Appointments are NOT required. All
donated blood stays local to be used at AAMC.
Basic Requirements for Blood Donation:
Be in generally good health and feel well
Be 17 - 75 years of age
Weight at least 110 pounds

Estimados Parroquianos,
Les cuento una encantadora historia sobre una madre quien compró entradas para un concierto del gran pianista polaco, Ignace Paderewski. Ella
llevó a su hijo de cinco años con ella, con la esperanza de que esta experiencia lo inspire en desarrollar aspiraciones musicales propias. Ella estaba encantada de ver cuan cerca del escenario estaban sus asientos. Al rato ella se
encontró con una vieja amiga y tanto se envolvió en la conversación, que no
notó que su hijo se le había escabullido. A las ocho en punto, el salón se
oscureció , la audiencia fue guardando silencio y las luces del scenario se
encendieron. Sólo ahí la mujer se dio cuenta de que su hijo estaba en el escenario, sentado en el banquillo del piano, inocentemente tocando “Estrellita donde estás”. Ella no lo podia creer. Pero
antes de que ella pudiera traer consigo a su hijo, Paderewski subió al escenario. Se acercó al piano y susurró al niño, “No
pares!” Sigue tocando!” Luego inclinandose sobre el niño Paderewski puso su mano izquierda en el piano y comenzó a
tocar el bajo. Unos segundos después rodeó al niño, en un círculo y agregó un obligato.
Juntos, el gran maestro y el pequeñín himnotizaron a la audiencia con su música.
Cuando terminaron de tocar, la audiencia quebró en tremendo aplauso. Años después casi todos los presentes olvidaron
las piezas que Paderewski tocó aquella noche, pero nadie olvidó “Estrellita donde estás”.
Esa imagen del gran maestro y el pequeño niño al piano hacen una hermosa imagen del Espíritu Santo y la Iglesia.
Hacen una hermosa imagen de como el Espíritu Santo se une a la Iglesia para hacer una bella musica.
Volviendo a esa imagen vemos que el niño se asemeja a los discípulos. Cuando Jesús ya no está con ellos. El conocimiento de Dios y de cómo extender el reino de Dios era totalmente deficiente. Era como el conocimiento de música del
niño de cinco años. Y, por supuesto, el gran maestro Polaco se asemeja al Espíritu Santo acercándose a los discípulos
rodeándolos con amor, susurrándoles aliento y transformando su endeble esfuerzo humano en algo hermoso.
Ésta es una lección enorme.
Cuando miramos al mundo y vemos tantos problemas que deben ser atendidos. También miramos a nuestros talentos
y vemos cuan inadecuados ellos son fente a todos esos problemas. Es ahí que debemos recordar la imagen del pequeñín
y Paderewski.
Musicalmente, el talento del pequeño era minúsculo. Pero Paderewski construyó sobre ese talento y lo convirtió en
algo hermoso – algo que himnotizó completamente a la sofisticada audiencia que se reunió esa noche. En una manera
similar, el Espíritu Santo puede tomar lo que tengamos – sin importar cuan pequeño sea – construir sobre eso y transformarlo in algo poderoso y bello.
Esta es la Buena noticia que celebramos en esta fiesta de Pentecostés.
Son las buena nueva que Jesús ha enviado sobre su Iglesia, la promesa del Espíritu Santo.
No estamos solos; el Espíritu Santo se inclina sobre nosotros, tomando nuestra pequeña contribución y transformándola
en algo que nunca siquiera hubiesemos soñando que fuera posible.
Estamos llamados por el Espíritu Santo como los discípulos a ir al mundo y con la ayuda del Espíritu Santo a hacer una
música hermosa.
