From Father Faucher
Page2
Pastor Emeritus
The readings today continue to be interesting. The Gospel is from Luke and is one we hear often, the story of Martha and
Mary. Jesus comes to visit. Martha does the work of hospitality, while Mary just sits and listens to Jesus. Martha complains, but
Jesus seems to take Mary’s part.
It is a story both about the importance of hospitality and the need to greet visitors well, but also a story about how Jesus is
changing the role of women.
Paul, writing to the Colossians, to a city he never visited, talks about his afflictions, and says they do not count because they are
also reminders of the affiliations of the Body of Christ, the church. He is not in one of his complaining moods, but in one of his endurance moods. Paul is so much like all of us, moody and sometimes difficult. But when he is good, he is very good.
But the star of the readings today is the first reading from chapter 18 of the Book of Genesis. Abraham is sitting at the entrance
to his tent as the day grows warm. It is a vision which could be today at any tribal leader’s tent in the Middle East. He rises, runs to
the three visitors he sees coming, and begs them to allow him to host them.
He does this for two reasons. The first is the importance of hospitality. It is the universal sign of brotherhood and good
will. Nothing was more important than giving hospitality to a visitor. The second reason is that visitors were special. They brought
news, excitement, and a change in the dull routine of life.
He has Sarah, his wife, prepare food, and has a young steer killed and prepared. This, of course, takes time, and he entertains
his guests with simple food and drink while they wait, and then he himself serves them.
At the end, they ask about Sarah, already an old lady, a barren old lady. Then they say that she will give birth to a son about
this time next year. The story goes on with the Lord revealing himself as one of the three men and then he says he is going to
destroy Sodom and Gomorrah. Abraham knows his nephew Lot lives in Sodom.
In next Sunday’s first reading, Abraham and the Lord barter for the lives of the people in Sodom. It is a wonderful passage.
But what is often lost is the connection between the deaths of the people of Sodom and Gomorrah and the promise to Abraham
and Sarah of a son soon to be born. This son, Isaac, is the next in line after Abraham, and one of the great ancestors of the Jewish
people and of Jesus.
This connection is important because it is symbolic of the fact that God never causes death without also causing life at the same
time. The deaths at Sodom and Gomorrah should always be linked with the life of Isaac and with the rest of his story. The two
stories are also linked by the hospitality given to the Lord and to his companions and by the lack of hospitality given to them when
they finally arrived at Sodom.
Two things to remember – hospitality is always of prime importance, and God always bring life after death.
Father Tom Faucher ~ Pastor Emeritus
A veces
aceptados y bienvenidos.
Su amigo y servidor ~ Padre Jesús Camacho
Ministry of Host. In this ministry, "host" also can be called the ministry of hospitality, hosting or welcoming. In this ministry, a warm
welcome is natural, anointed with the Lord's love, receiving people who come to our church. It is the same love that Christ gives. St.
Paul tells us: "Share love with the Lord’s people who are in need" (Romans 12: 13). It is important that those called to this ministry
have the charisma of "hospitality"; that is, people who truly love Jesus and other people. Sometimes we think that a smile and a
greeting are not so important, but the truth is that many are burdened with problems, sadness and bitterness and with a friendly
welcome, you can change their mood. "If you have love for one another, everyone will realize that you are my disciples" (John 13:
35). By virtue of hospitality, we are all brothers, accepted and welcome.
Your friend and servant ~ Father Jesus Camacho

QUIET, PRAYER, CHRIST, PEACE
You are invited to join the small group who spends
time in Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament each
Wednesday. You are welcome at any hour between
9am-3pm, but the 10-11am hour is open for another
regular commitment. We are also hoping for another
worshipper right after daily Mass until 10am. You
may commit as a regular or as a substitute. Your
investment in this ministry is a blessing both to you
and to our parish. Feel free to drop in anytime.
This is a great opportunity to spend quiet time with
our Lord, to converse with and listen to the Holy
Spirit. Just as investing time in a friend or spouse
invites intimacy, spending time in adoration invites a
deeper relationship with Christ. For more information, contact Marilyn Tratz 342-3480
