BE THE MESSAGE!
As I perused through a number of religious publications recently, my attention quickly attached itself to an
article that was entitled "Be The Message."
My immediate reaction was "Wow!" As I attempted to deeply and prayerfully reflect upon this powerful
exhortation, my mind raced through a myriad of "Faith-Examples" who are the message of hope and love.
We begin with our Lord and Saviour
example of gracious hospitality. He
lived the word. He reached out to
homeless, to the castaways, to the
faithless, et al. We see incredible
parables of the Prodigal Son, the
and the Pharisee, how goodness and

Are you striving to "Be The Message?" Are you working consistently to be the message and the messenger as a
Christian? What are you doing towards this end? Are you more active than passive? Are you more talk than
action?
These are all challenging questions that each of us can use under the umbrella of self-examination so that we
can reach a point in our lives to exclaim what St. Paul so powerfully proclaimed in Galatians, 2:19-20:"It is no
longer I who live, but Christ Who lives in me; and the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of
God, who loved me and gave himself for me."

Constantinople.
The St. Athanasius the Great Greek Orthodox Church in Arlington,

(Romans 12:13), as St. Paul so exhorts...... Thus, it is our rich

through Orthodox Christian tradition, education, and philanthropy.
We seek to serve the spiritual needs of our faithful parishioners

inviting others into the Orthodox faith through Baptism and/or
Chrismation, and educating them through the establishment of our

The Holy Great Martyr Demetrius the Myrrh-streamer
Monday, October 26, 2015 Reading:
Saint Demetrius was a Thessalonian, a most pious son of
pious and noble parents, and a teacher of the Faith of Christ.
When Maximian first came to Thessalonica in 290, he raised
the Saint to the rank of Duke of Thessaly. But when it was
discovered that the Saint was a Christian, he was arrested
and kept bound in a bath-house. While the games were under
way in the city, Maximian was a spectator there. A certain
friend of his, a barbarian who was a notable wrestler, Lyaeus
by name, waxing haughty because of the height and strength
of his body, boasted in the stadium and challenged the
citizens to a contest with him. All that fought with him were
defeated. Seeing this, a certain youth named Nestor,
aquaintance of Demetrius', came to the Saint in the bathhouse and asked his blessing to fight Lyaeus single-handed.
Receiving this blessing and sealing himself with the sign of
the precious Cross, he presented himself in the stadium, and
said, "O God of Demetrius, help me!" and straightway he
engaged Lyaeus in combat and smote him with a mortal
blow to the heart, leaving the former boaster lifeless upon
the earth. Maximian was sorely grieved over this, and when he learned who was the cause of this defeat, he
commanded straightway and Demetrius was pierced with lances while he was yet in the bath-house, As for
Nestor, Maximian commanded that he be slain with his own sword.
Apolytikion of Demetrius the Myrrh-streamer in the Third Tone
The world has found in you a great champion in time of peril, as you emerged the victor in routing the
barbarians. For as you brought to naught the boasts of Lyaios, imparting courage to Nestor in the stadium,
in like manner, holy one, great Martyr Dimitrios, invoke Christ God for us, that He may grant us His great
mercy.
Kontakion of Demetrius the Myrrh-streamer in the Second Tone
God, who gave you invincible power and with care kept your city invulnerable, royally clothed the Church
in purple with the streams of your blood, for you are her strength, O Dimitrios.

timely and useful information.
Below we have compiled a list of frequently asked question about Catechetical Sunday School:
Q. When does the Sunday School program take place?
A. Classes begin Sunday, September 13th and conclude the Sunday before Memorial Day weekend.
Classes begin with attendance during the Divine Liturgy at 10am. Classroom instruction for PreK - 2nd

A. The Sunday School program is a ministry of the St Athanasius the Great parish offered to all families
without a fee. We do suggest a voluntary annual donation of $20/child.
Q. Our family is exploring the Orthodox Christian faith, may we register our children for Sunday

Our Mission
Since 1988, Horizons has been serving young homeless
children and their families in Massachusetts.
Horizons for Homeless
Children improves the lives
of young homeless children
in Massachusetts and helps
their families to succeed by
providing high-quality early
education, opportunities
for play, and comprehensive
family support services. We
also advocate on behalf of
young children, train educators
and human service providers,
and provide research on
homeless children.
Horizons for Homeless
Children is recognized as a national leader in the education of
homeless children. Today, we provide services to more
than 2,000 young homeless children and their families
each week.
Our Vision
Every homeless child in Massachusetts will have the
opportunity to learn, play, and thrive.

Research shows that high-quality,
trauma-informed early education
for young children can mitigate the
effects of long term stress, and is the
most effective way to enable future
school success.
Investments in
early education
may also reduce
the need for
costly services
later in a child’s
life. Investments
in early
education
and social emotional learning can
help children be ready to learn.
Our Programs
Early Education Centers
Our three early education centers, known as Community Children’s
Centers, are designed to meet the unique needs of young
homeless children. Each center
takes an individualized approach
using evidence-based curriculum
and social emotional skill building
tactics, providing children with high
quality care and a developmentallyappropriate program to help them
enter school with the skills that
they need to be successful. As
parental engagement is key to a
child’s success, families receive
additional support services such
as parenting classes and connections to community services,
educational opportunities and financial literacy classes.
Playspaces
Our Playspace Program ensures that young children living
in homeless shelters in Massachusetts have the opportunity
for developmentally-appropriate play and early education
opportunities. Horizons builds educational Playspaces in
shelters and stocks them with age-appropriate books, toys,
and art supplies. We currently have more than 130 Playspaces
that are staffed by more than 1,400 trained volunteers, called
Playspace Activity Leaders (PALs), who commit two hours
each week to children in a shelter Playspace. With Playspace
available to them, parents are able to take onsite classes,
meet with a case manager and do what they need to get their
family back on their feet. Our PAL
volunteer program is one of the
largest volunteer networks in
Massachusetts.

Policy & Advocacy
We are part of both a local and
a national movement to improve
access to high-quality early
education for homeless children. Through our advocacy efforts, we
hope to create a better understanding and recognition of the needs
of young homeless children and to affect public policy around
issues of affordable housing, early education, and family support.
Research & Evaluation
We have an active program to evaluate our program interventions,
assess results, achieve outcomes and improve performance. We
strive to utilize this data to influence public policy around issues of
child homelessness and early education.

Physiologically, it's been shown that smiling can make you feel happy, even if you are forcing the smile deliberately. A smile
energizes your brain as well as your muscles. And you don't want your face to settle into sadness. Remind yourself to smile regularly
today. -Author unknown
"Fall seven times, stand up eight." ~Japanese proverb
I'd rather see a sermon, than hear one any day. I'd rather you would walk with me, than merely show me the way. The eye is a better
pupil, and more willing than the ear. Fine counsel is confusing, but example is always clear. And best of all preachers, are men who
live their creeds. - Author unknown
For to see good put in action is what everybody needs. I soon can learn to do it, if you'll let me see it done. I can see your hands in
action, but your tongue but your tongue to fast my run. And the lectures you deliver may be very fine and true. But I'd rather get my
lesson observing what you do. For I may not understand you and the high advice you give. But there is no misunderstanding how
you act and how you live. ~Edgar A. Guest
