NEWSLETTER MEET OUR AMAZING JEN ELLIS, DIRECTOR OF NURSING AT MADRONA HOUSE Jen was born and raised in Portland, Oregon. She worked as a certified caregiver for twelve years and knew early in her career that she wanted to work with older adults. Jen completed nursing school in Oregon during 2004 and relocated to Washington in 2010 to continue her career path in elder care nursing. They are excited to have the opportunity to build on the vision Madrona House set with in 2013. Jen and Karlene come as a team from the Madison Avenue House and Jen enjoys time on the beach, cups of tea, live music, time with her son as well as their furry family. GET TO KNOW RUTH MASTERS OF THE MADRONA HOUSE Ruth was born at her grandmother’s house in Detroit, Michigan and was raised primarily in Wilamette, MI. Ruth met her husband, Richard, in high school and they dated for nine years before even bringing up the word marriage! They had three sons together: Brian, Kenneth and Ross. Ruth has her BSN in Nursing and later went on to get her MSBH from the University of Colorado. Five interesting facts about Ruth: 1) She once had a pet monkey (a gift from an airline pilot) 2) She is a former figure skater 3) She has lived in over ten states 4) She collects Indian and African Art 5) She was an Air Force wife For a full calendar of events visit: bainbridgeseniorliving.com/calendars DIANA PETERS – THE MADISON AVENUE HOUSE Diana was born in West Vancouver, Canada. When she was three and a half years old her father lost his job due to the depression and moved the family up the coast to Read Island, a small island 100 miles north of Vancouver. MADISON AVENUE HOUSE When she was 10, her father died, and her mother was left to raise six children. At 18, Diana joined the Canadian Airforce and was sent to the East Coast to serve after her time in Toronto, where she specialized in Weather Forecasting (Meteorology). In 1951, Diana married Alan from Vienna, Austria. They had two children, Mark and Julia. Mark lives in Vienna where he was the Principal Cellist of the Tenerife Orchestra for 16 years. Mark and his first wife had four children. Daughter Julia and her husband (a glass artist) live on Bainbridge and have two children who reside in Seattle. In 1951 Diana and Alan applied for an immigration visa to the US and received it in 1953. Diana is a very accomplished photographer which started out as a hobby. She has done Diana Peters work for art galleries as well as some art centers. Diana enjoys playing cribbage and Scrabble, and also reading and knitting. She attends the knitting group at the Madison House. “Nature is my religion.” Diana and her husband loved to travel and took journeys to many places, some of which included Russia, Norway, New Zealand, Austria, Germany, and hiked in most of those countries. Her husband, Jacob, was from Norway and they met on a ship returning from the U.S. to Scandinavia. Ellen was returning from school in New York and was in first class. Jacob was a Norwegian sailor returning home and decided to splurge after a long time at sea, so he was in first class as well. Before moving to the U.S., Rommel ran his own commercial printing press business. Rommel was certified as a nursing assistant in Somerset County, NJ. After receiving his accreditation he worked in a skilled nursing care facility until he moved to Washington in 2013. He focuses on forming a personal connection with the people he helps. His job satisfaction comes from seeing his residents smile and seeing their health improving. She currently loves to read the Christian Science Monitor, as well as books on history and autobiographies and is currently a member of the Sons of Norway. Karlene has been the Administrator of Madison Avenue House for the past three years. With over 25 years of experience in the senior care world, both in the private and non-profit sectors, we were excited to offer her the position of Madrona House Administrator this past June. Karlene has a passion for memory care, with one of her favorite career ventures being that of developing a memory care community in Seattle. Karlene is thrilled to be working at Madrona House and to share her vision of what resident centered memory care can accomplish with regards to improving each day our residents spend in our community. BSL STAFF She loves classic piano and guitar, and especially loves hymns. KARLENE COLLETTI, MADRONA HOUSE ADMINISTRATOR WYATT HOUSE The last governess of the Virgin Islands introduced them at dinner one night and by the time they got off the ship, they were in love! They were married in the early 1950’s in Korsoer, Denmark. They moved between the U.S. and Scandinavia a few times and finally came to Edmonds, WA in 1969. They raised three sons, and now have five grandchildren. Sadly, Jacob died last year. Ellen is supported by her strong faith in the Christian Science religion and is active in the local Bainbridge Island Church where she has many friends. Karlene holds a BA in Sociology/Gerontology and a Masters in Gerontology (Aging Services Management) from the University of Southern California. Outside of work, Karlene is a mother to five children and one adorable Rottweiler. She enjoys reading, music, exercise, and shoe shopping.
