ADULT HEBREW CLASSES
Temple Israel is pleased to offer Hebrew classes for adults.
Are you a beginner who wants to read along during Shabbat services?
Would you like to improve your Hebrew reading fluency? Do you want
to understand some of the prayers in the prayer book? Would you like to
experience the excitement of learning to read and understand the Torah
text?
If you need to improve your reading skills, get started by attending
Reading Hebrew 1 or 2.
To sign up for Reading Hebrew 1 or 2 classes, call Temple’s Education
Office at 901.937.2777. To sign up for the Biblical Hebrew class or for
more information about any of the classes, please e-mail Dr. Dick Rubin
at RMRubin@att.net.
The following one-hour weekly Hebrew classes are on Sunday mornings
while religious school is in session:
READING HEBREW 1

BETWEEN YOU AND ME
You shall not stand idly by while your neighbor bleeds. (Leviticus 19:16)
This verse from our Torah has always been a call to consciousness for me. I understand it to mean that it is a
clear violation of our Jewish tradition to do nothing when someone else is hurting, suffering, or in danger. But
since the end of April, this piece of text has come to mean even more to me.
On April 21, Temple Israel hosted our first teen blood drive. Our congregation
is a beacon in Memphis when it comes to the self-sacrificing act of donating
blood. We were even honored by Lifeblood as the Faith-Based Group of the Year
in 2012, donating more blood than some of our sister Christian congregations
that are many times our size. Given this legacy, and given our 11th and 12th grade
curriculum this year of Judaism in action, having a teen drive seemed worth a shot.
Lifeblood issued us a 20-pint challenge. That is, they would consider it a
worthwhile venture to come out especially for our teens if we were able to
produce 20 willing donors. Our teens met the challenge: more than 20 showed up
ready to give, some even bringing friends from school. Many were petrified, the
vast majority having never given blood before and possessing a fear of shots and
needles. They cheered each other on, held each other’s hands, talked each other
through panic, and, in the process, saved dozens of lives.
I’d like to share with you a few of their own words, taken down by teen “reporters”
who were unable to donate blood that day but showed up anyway.
A “I am giving blood because I know it has the ability to save lives.”
A “I am nervous because it is my first time giving blood, but excited because I am
about to save four lives.”
A “Giving blood means the world to me. I am truly making a difference.”
A “The fear of giving blood is taken away by the lives I will be saving.”
A “Even though I cannot give blood, I still came to give my support to those who
are able. They are so brave and I love how so many people came to support
them. It is truly a mitzvah.”
What is Judaism in action? It is using the teachings of our Torah as the collective
moral underpinning that motivates us to make righteous choices in our lives. We
learn from our tradition, internalize those teachings, and use them as a universal
and silent connective tissue that binds us together and propels us on our path
toward building a better world. That is what I witnessed as I watched our young
adults opening their veins for their fellow human beings.
I’d like to close by sharing one more reflection from a student. I asked her to
comment on the quote from Leviticus that began this article. Here is what she said.
A “Leviticus 19:16 represents my involvement today because although I could not
donate myself, I still participated by encouraging my friends and supporting
them as they fulfilled this important mitzvah. I’m proud that I could help out in
some way, rather than just letting others do all the work for me.”
For her, not standing idly by while her neighbors bleed means that while her
friends were bleeding in order to save lives, she would be with them every step
of the way. I hope and pray that this is the first of many times our teens inspire
each other to save lives. And I am encouraged as a rabbi and a passionate Jew that
Judaism in action is a force for good in our world.
B’shalom,
Rabbi Katie Bauman
Note: Blood drives will be held from 8:30am-1:30pm at Temple Israel on these Sundays:

Although the Wendy and Avron
Fogelman Religious School may
not begin until August 18, we work
throughout the year to ensure that our
education programs at Temple are of
the highest caliber. Each summer, we
spend a significant amount of time
evaluating and rethinking all aspects
of our program, from our kindergarten classes through adult
education. We bring new ideas to life, such as involving
parents more directly in their children’s Jewish education,
engaging more of our high school students on a deeper level,
and developing new adult learning initiatives. But did you
ever wonder where these ideas come from?
Many of my innovative ideas have come from working with
our incredible team at Temple, along with my own studies
in Jewish education at the Rhea Hirsch School of Education
at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, where
leading scholars and cutting-edge researchers challenged
my intellectual curiosity and introduced me to a new vision
for Jewish life. My year in Israel at the start of the program
was a great gift that helped me immerse myself in Israeli
life, culture, and the Hebrew language. My years at HUC-JIR
empowered my ability to breathe new life into our cherished
traditions and to teach others.
Today, I am applying that knowledge and creativity to rethink
how we engage with Jewish education at Temple. We are
constantly working to
connect more of our
members – from the
youngest to the oldest
– with their Judaism in
a meaningful, exciting
way.
It is a privilege to be
able to strengthen
this community,
sustain the transmission of our heritage from generation to
generation, and to touch the lives of so many of our children
and adults. This is what has made my life and my career so
meaningful.
The joy of experimentation and the love for the big questions
makes being a Jewish educator an incredibly fulfilling career
path. Today, there is a growing demand for Jewish educators
who can bring a new vision, relevance, and innovative
strategies to galvanize the imaginations of students of all
ages.
It is not an exaggeration to say
that children enjoy getting wet and
messy! Incorporating these types of
active learning experiences into the
classroom means children are highly
engaged and have an opportunity
to explore their world. For young
children, science is a way to find
out about the everyday world that
surrounds them. This is exactly
what they are interested in doing,
all day, every day. This summer, our
faculty has created a “Weird Science”
curriculum based on active and hands-on learning.
Real science learning begins with
the curiosity of a child, and we
kicked off the first week with
“Water Works.” By playing in
water, scooping water, dumping
water and freezing water, children
learned that water is a liquid.
They learned that some objects
may sink and some may float in
water, but they had to predict and
create a hypothesis for each item.
They learned about condensation
and evaporation. And they also
learned about conserving water and water pollution. The rest
of the summer curriculum will include topics such as “Garden
Goodies,” “Nibble on Nutrition,” and “World of Weather.”
Sound like fun for your child? There are a limited number of
spaces available in our program for the month of July. If you
are interested, please contact me.

careers – please put them in touch with me.
I’ll be happy to tell them all about HUC-JIR’s
graduate programs preparing leaders in
Jewish education and encourage them to
join me in shaping the Jewish future.

CEMETERY MEMORIAL
Temple Israel is working on a memorial to recognize
congregants who lost their lives in service to our country.
An existing memorial honors those Temple members who
died in WW II. Now we are collecting names of those who
lost their lives in Korea, Vietnam, the Gulf Wars, the war
on terrorism or any other time while on active duty in the
United States Armed Forces. The basic qualification for
inclusion is that the honoree or their parents were members
of Temple Israel. If you know of anyone who should be
honored, please contact Dick Eiseman, Kenneth Wurzburg, or
David Rosenthal at rosenthalcrew@aol.com.
