BETWEEN YOU AND ME
May is such a glorious month. The chill of a winter that extended with snow into April has given way to full
bloom before summer. Children and grandchildren, whether in Kindergarten or 12th grade, are preparing to
graduate, which brings to mind what actor Ed Helms of The Office fame said at my alma mater last year:
“I wish there was a way to know you were in the good old days before you actually left them.”
On one level, it’s impossible to know the era in which one lives. My friend and colleague Rabbi Brad Artson
notes that nobody ever knows the name of the period of time they are actually living through until someone
decides that the period in question is over. As he puts it, “The one thing they did not have
in the Biblical Period was a Bible. Once they had a Bible, then the Biblical Period was over; it
could have a name, and it was called the ‘Biblical Period.’” But who knew when they were
living through it? Nobody woke up in the late Roman Empire and said to their beloved
spouse, “Honey, you know, I was feeling Late Antique last night, but I am definitely feeling
Early Medieval this morning!” We mark transitions, generally, when it is too late to mark
them, and then you can’t do anything about them!
Rabbi Greenstein
Judaism calls us to see most days as potentially one of the “good old days” before you
actually leave them – and there is no better time to appreciate this idea than these days in
Jewish time between Passover, which ended last month, and Shavuot this month.
The idea of freedom from slavery associated with Pesach is connected with the idea of receiving the Torah,
associated with Shavuot, by making sure we count every day in between. The ritual of the counting of the
Omer reminds us that the purpose of freedom through a Jewish lens is not simply escaping bondage but
moving toward something higher and sacred.
This tradition of counting each day is a wonderful reminder of the gift of every day and the importance of
making each day count. It’s almost as if we can hear the words of the Bible in Psalms, “Teach us to count the
days of our lives so that we may acquire a heart of wisdom.”
After all, if God renews each day and night, why can’t we?! Mazal tov to our Graduates, Confirmands, and
every Temple family celebrating a major milestone during this harvest month, the time when our ancestors
arrived at Mt. Sinai and embraced Torah as their guidepost for living. With so many more “good old days”
ahead for Temple – especially with our new rabbis and senior staff arriving soon – the best is yet to come!
Faithfully yours,
Rabbi Micah Greenstein
SHAVUOT
Celebrate Shavuot – the anniversary of the giving of the Torah to the Jewish people – at Temple Israel!
PRE-SHAVUOT TOT SHABBAT SERVICE AND DINNER
Friday, May 22, 6:15 pm
We love celebrating the gift of Shabbat together. This month, let’s also celebrate the gift of Torah. At 6:15 pm,
experience a Pre-Shavuot Tot Shabbat service created for our youngest members during which we’ll welcome
our First Fruits (all our new babies) into our Temple community. Please contact Jackie Evans in the Education
Office, jackiee@timemphis.org or 901.937.2777, to let us know that you and your families will be there.
Stay for a family-friendly holiday dinner, which is free to Temple members who RSVP by May 15; after
then and for non-members, the cost is $8/adult and $4/child. Go to timemphis.org or scan the QR
code to RSVP. Questions? Contact Jackie.
Shabbat Experiences for Families, including Pre-Shavuot Tot Shavuot, are made possible by the generosity and
vision of the Mildred H. and Edgar C. Haas, Sr. Family Endowment for Education.
SHAVUOT CELEBRATION
Saturday, May 23, 6-7:30 pm
Enjoy refreshments, including wine and cheese, followed by an invigorating study session and inspirational
Havdalah as together we welcome the holiday of Shavuot.

JOIN TEAM GARDEN
~a message from Team Garden’s Sharon Berman~
In 2014, Temple Israel’s Team Garden built a
garden space, learned about gardening techniques
and a variety of vegetables, and had a successful
harvest. During our second year, it’s all about
increased production. We plan to more than
double the produce harvested. But we need more
garden volunteers to make this happen!
This opportunity is a great way to give back
to the community, specifically to those served
by the Mid-South Food Bank. We offer on-thejob training and pair volunteers to make the
experience more fun.
All ages can volunteer – children with a parent,
young people needing a b’nai mitzvah project
or hours toward graduation, adults of every age
(our oldest volunteer is 80+). To volunteer or ask
questions, contact me, bermanss@gmail.com or
901.291.8878.

Words cannot express the joy I feel on Sunday mornings. The halls of Temple fill with songs, Hebrew, and
deep discussions, and the students in the Wendy and Avron Fogelman Religious School talk, play, and
laugh with one another. We have the pleasure each week of watching our children build relationships
with their Judaism, Temple, and one another, and this is one of the greatest blessings we have.
I could go on and on about the words our students have learned in Hebrew Through Movement, the
incredible projects they have created to explore Torah, holidays, and Israel, and the beautiful prayers they
sing each week with Teen Team. As they say, “a picture is worth a thousand words…”
Thank you to the parents, teachers, Madrichim, and everyone who has helped to make this year so incredible! As we say when
we finish one book of the Torah and begin the next, “Chazak, chazak, v’nitchazek. Be strong, be strong, and we will strengthen
one another.” Thank you for helping this wonderful, joyful community move from strength to strength!
I would also like to give a special thank you to Matthew Saslawsky, our religious school photographer, who has captured all of
these incredible moments.

THIRD TI FELLOWSHIP GROUP ANNOUNCED
video
Recently named one of the most innovative Jewish programs in the country by the Slingshot Fund, the TI
Fellowship will unite 20 college students and recent graduates from Memphis and around the country to
Memphis this summer. This year’s class represents 17 outstanding universities from across the United States.
Over the course of the ten-week program,
the Fellows will gain valuable work
experience from companies and nonprofits and also will receive networking and
professional development training from
the New Memphis Institute and the Rhodes
College Career Center.
Lest you think that the Fellowship is all
work and no play, the Fellows also will
be immersed in the vibrant culture of
downtown and midtown Memphis and will
get to know the young Jewish community in
Memphis through participation in Temple’s
ConnecTI summer events.
The Fellows group from 2014 visited St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Throughout the entire experience, the
Fellows will be immersed in Jewish learning and communal engagement that will show them how to be
connected to their Judaism and the Jewish community as young professionals.
