As I talk with leaders, helpers and worshippers, those attributes come through. When I started in May, I asked you to be faithful in attendance and in financial support, and you have. Thank you ever so much, and please...don’t stop. I pray that worshipping in the church community this summer has helped to strengthen your faith and commitment. The remodeling is almost finished, and we anticipate a return to a beautifully refurbished sanctuary on August 21st. Sunday school, youth groups and all our Study groups and Bible studies will be starting up again. Thinking ahead, keep September 11th on your mind as we join with the ELCA churches across the nation to focus our energies on service to our community. The Call Committee continues working with Bishop Talmage to help us find a strong candidate to form a team with Pastor Josh and to be our Lead Pastor. Keep the committee in your prayers. See you in church, Pastor Frank Nausin 2 TVLC Sanctuary Renewal We look forward to our first services in the newly renovated space on the weekend of August 20th and 21st. After many months of planning, prep, and implementation our sanctuary renovation is nearing completion. Here is a summary of the major areas that have been addressed: Flooring: The 27-year-old carpet was removed and replaced with a concrete overlay that resembles large stone tiles with colors that blend into the original wood and copper inlays of the pews, altar, and cross. After considering a number of possibilities, this solution was chosen due to its look, durability, and ease of care. The choir loft and choir room were recarpeted with new commercial carpet Paint: A new color palette was decided on for the space based on recommendations of a church building consultant from the ELCA. Video: Our aging projector was replaced with a 110-inch video wall. This solution was determined to be the optimal video solution for the brightness and architecture of our space. We are extremely excited for a clear and vibrant display to enhance our worship. Also, additional displays were added at the rear of the worship space (for use by worship leaders and the congregation during baptisms) and in the narthex (for overflow seating and future display of ministry opportunities before and after the service). Audio: Our inductive loop audio system was enhanced and reworked to include all seating areas and is now embedded in the new floor. With the change in flooring, a change in the acoustics of the sanctuary has been anticipated. Evaluation of the current system has been undertaken, and will continue as we move into the renovated space and receive feedback. We anticipate making adjustments and enhancements in the coming months. Windows: The glass block windows in the rear of the sanctuary were replaced by high-efficiency dual-pane clear class windows for an updated look and views of sky, clouds, and trees. The actual amount of light allowed through the high-efficiency windows is minimally different from the glass blocks. A special thanks to Window World of Tucson, owned by TVLC members Chris and April Lutz, for their donation of these windows. Narthex: Per the recommendation of the church building consultant, the space was decluttered and the lighting was adjusted to create a more open, welcoming space. The mosaic cross was preserved and blended into the new flooring. New water fountains were also installed. 3 Bathrooms: Narthex bathrooms were renovated including new floors, mirrors, and lighting along with a resurfacing of the vanities and partitions. New high efficiency toilets and changing stations were added as well. Upholstery and Kneeling Pads: Replacement of the upholstery of the pews and kneeling pads was not deemed necessary at this time, although cleaning was done and minor repairs were made. Special thanks to Andy Ingerson and Tucson Tops Auto Upholstery donating the restuffing and repairing of the kneeling pads. Choir Room: In addition to new carpet, the choir room also was painted and outfitted with new coverings. Tapestry: The large tapestry that had been on the front wall, now unfortunately showing considerable wear, will be relocated to the Nausin Family Life Center. In its place, to set the theme for each liturgical season, we have commissioned a set of banners that will alternate throughout the year, designed by awardwinning contemporary textile artist Linda Witte Henke. She specializes in spiritually expressive and liturgically purposed work, and her commissions include several for the ELCA presiding bishop. Our first banner will be for the “ordinary” season – which begins the day after Pentecost and continues until Advent. Green is the color for this part of the liturgical year, the symbol of growth, and the gospel lessons focus on the teachings of Jesus and the response of his followers (whereas the other seasons center on Jesus’ life – Advent, Christmas, Lent, Easter…). This banner symbolizes God in the midst of the people as the Tree of Life (the graphic trunk and branches) central to this congregation (the saguaro shape), empowering us to live out the gospel in our daily lives. The two halves of the tree might also be interpreted as uplifted hands in ongoing commitment to ministries of justice and compassion beyond the congregation. 4 This summer’s 2016 VBS was a rousing success for the 113 kids who attended! Deep Sea Discovery, a week where kids could dive into God’s presence by delving deep into His Word to see how He has been with His people every step of the way. Every kid sailed away each day saying “God is with me— wherever I go! He KNOWS me, HEARS me, STRENGTHENS me, LOVES me, and SENDS me!” Hands-on service projects and sea science helped kids experience a VBS adventure like no other! We would like to express our sincere gratitude to all of the volunteers, staff, and friends that made this week possible. The snacks, donations, music, supplies, time, creativity, talents, energy, helping hands, and prayers received made Deep Sea Discovery a huge success. Many of our VBS supplies and decorations are being forwarded to Desert Hope Church for their VBS program, helping even more children to learn that they can stand strong in God’s love! Special thanks to Julie Ressler, director of VBS, for her incredible organizational skills and creative talents! And again in JULY... VBS WENT MOBILE! A core team of leaders spent a week full of blessings at the Gospel Rescue Mission, reaching out to the resident children with the message from “Deep Sea Discovery”. Special thanks to the congregation for your prayers and to Julie and Mandy Ressler, Katie and Julie Muirhead, Phoebe Coleman, Patty Pearson, Susan Fissell, Vivian Wilsdon, Karen Yodice, Cheri Mitstifer and Sherri McClellan for their gifts of leadership! 5 TVLC Rally Day 2016 Milestone Ministries invites all students to bring their school backpacks to the 9:30 a.m. worship service on Sunday, August 14th. Pastor Josh will invite students to come forward for our annual Blessing of the Backpacks. We pray that all our children will have a safe, productive, and fun school year. Graham Cracker Breakfast for 3 & 4 Year Olds You and your parents, caregivers, or special guests are invited to join us for a breakfast to meet your Sunday School Leaders! We want to welcome you on Sunday, August 28th at 9:00am in the Education Building. We will have graham crackers, milk, juice and fruit. Our regular Sunday School will start right after the Children’s Sermon. Rally Day at TVLC is Sunday, August 21st at the 9:30am Worship service. It is the start of a new year of teaching and learning in many congregations. Most often it is a day in late August or early September that signifies the end of summer vacation and the return to Sunday school. Rally Day is an essential part of the life and mission of many congregations. It is the time to recognize and honor both those who teach and those who learn; all who nurture faith in others. Rally Day provides a unique opportunity to acknowledge the partnership of parents and teachers and other congregational members in affirming a life style that is Christ’s style. It is a time for the entire congregation to rally behind God’s intention that all Christians--children, youth and adults--grow and learn; a day for congregations to celebrate their ministry of Christian education! Our children come to Rally Day filled with the activities of summer. They are adjusting to new routines of school days and new friendships. This time of the year finds many children full of energy and searching for a friendly place to belong. While most children are eager to return and enter their religious education program, many are unhappy with what and whom they may have left behind. Summer friends and neighborhood pals don’t always follow our students into the church or the classroom. Because friendships are important to children, the good news is friends will come if our children in our congregation invite them. Children and young people want to be with their friends! On Sunday, August 21st, come and receive a renewed spiritual energy for you and your family. Come and celebrate the end of our summer schedules as we begin TVLC programs and enjoy Brunch on the Patio after the 9:30 worship service – ask a friend or neighbor to come along! News 6 Every Day God Experiences Registration Registration for children ages 3 through 5th grade will be available on Sundays starting August 7th, before and after service as well as online. Volunteers can also register at these times. Elementary Sunday School begins on August 21st at 9:30am A large group activity will be held in the Chapel following the children’s sermon. Our first Sunday of elementary classes begins August 28th. All children will go to the 9:30am service with their parents, and after the Children’s Sermon, they will go to their classrooms. Katie has been a confirmation guide for the past 3 years and also teaches our 1st grade Sunday School class. She will work with Pastor Josh to plan activities for our high school students. Katie is entering the University of Arizona this fall, where she will study Elementary Education. Welcome, Katie! The Chancel Choir would like to invite one and all to come and sing! You truly do not need to read music to be in Chancel Choir. You might be interested, but are concerned about your voice. Please just come and sing. All are welcome. The choir is a great way to have fellowship with one another and serve God and our TVLC community. Starting August 18th, the choir rehearses in the Sanctuary on Thursdays from 7:00pm until 8:30pm and meets each Sunday to warm-up at 9:00am and sings at the 9:30 service. A Farewell from pianist Greg Starr It is with mixed emotion that I am leaving TVLC. Donna and I have the chance to be closer to family and “home” with our move to Corvallis, Oregon. I am excited about new adventures and sad to be leaving so many who have been wonderfully supportive and generous over the past 9 years. Thank you all for your kindness, grace, and good will. Handbell ringing is a wonderful way to contribute to the worship atmosphere and give praise to God! Two handbell choirs are open for participation! Reformation Ringers begins the fall season rehearsals on Tuesday, September 6th in the Sanctuary at 7:00pm. All handbell ringers, high school through adults, are welcome. Tintinnabulation begins rehearsals on Wednesday, September 7th in the Sanctuary at 8:00pm (right after EDGE confirmation class). This handbell choir is open to all youth from 6th grade through high school. Brand-new to handbells? You are welcome and wanted--we learn as we play! If you have never played in a hand bell choir but are interested in playing with Reformation Ringers or Tintinnabulation, director Vivian Wilsdon would be happy to help you get acquainted with hand bell ringing! The Wednesday Night Bible Study will begin again on August 24th from 6:30-8:00pm in the Library. The ELCA’s 2016 National Day of Service is scheduled for Sunday, September 11th. Last year’s Day of Service was a great success at TVLC and everywhere else in the ELCA. In our congregation, over 120 people – including Boy Scout Troop 142 - participated in several meaningful projects: baking and distributing dozens of cookies to our community partners and friends; stocking comfort bags for Peppi’s House; cleaning the courtyards, filling the sandbox, painting pawprints, and updating the teachers’ lounge at Wheeler Elementary School; collecting children’s books for classrooms. Because of your enthusiastic response to the call to service in past years, even more meaningful projects are being explored for this September’s event, and there will be something for everyone to do! You won’t want to miss this opportunity to serve others in our community, to do God’s Work with Our Hands, so be sure to save the date! Please contact Veanne Lupia in the church office to sign up! 10 Food Basket Ministry The Food Basket Ministry has been hard at work this summer trying to fill its shelves with muchneeded food for the upcoming holidays. Requests this summer have been for jelly, canned tuna and other meats, canned fruits, dried pasta and pasta sauces, rice and beans. As always, please remember that all items must be non-perishable and in cans or plastic jars. Glass containers are not accepted! Sincere thanks for your support of the food basket ministry! TVLC Preschool & Kindergarten Back to School The school staff is preparing for another great school year! Our staff and children are back on campus beginning the week of August 1st for School Visits and Open House. Kindergarten’s first day is August 3rd. Preschool classes begin August 15th. Class Availability Our classes are filling up but we do have openings in our afternoon 4’s class and in our Kindergarten. If you have friends, family or neighbors who might like more information about our program, please have them call the school office at 749-1738! The Haiti team will be holding a fundraiser for its ministry on Saturday, September 24th from 6:008:00pm in the Nausin Family Life Center. We are looking for donations of desirable items or experiences in support of the silent auction at the Lotsa Pasta dinner and silent action. If you have something you would like to donate, contact Pam Bridgmon at pambridgmon@gmail.com or Lyndee Jones at lyndeejones@gmail.com. 11 Dispose-A-Med Do you have an unwanted or expired prescription or over-thecounter medication in your home, and wonder how to safely dispose of it? Dispose-A-Med is a free, environmentally-friendly local program that provides safe disposal of unused medications and personal care products. Partners in the program include the Pima County Health Department, UA College of Pharmacy, City of Tucson, Tucson Water, the Household Hazardous Waste Program, local law enforcement and fire departments, and various other community groups. Dispose-A-Med began in 2009 as a way to minimize the abuse of prescription drugs and to prevent accidental poisonings, but it also prevents the introduction of pollutants into the environment and contamination of the water in underground aquifers. It is definitely not safe for the environment to flush unwanted medication, or to grind it up, mix it with kitty litter or coffee grounds and then put this into your trash. These methods allow drugs to contaminate our water supply or to be ingested by animals who dig through garbage in search of food. There are both daily and occasional Dispose-A-Med collection sites, located across Pima County. Both prescription and over-the-counter tablets, capsules, liquids, and creams are accepted. Not accepted are metal or glass inhalation aerosol bottles, syringes, epi-pens, and drugs from commercial organizations. Drugs brought to a collection site should be in their original bottles; workers at the Dispose-A-Med site will remove all labels from the bottles to protect your privacy. Collected drugs are incinerated at high temperature with the help of the DEA, so that there is no contamination of the air, soil, or water. Pill bottles are recycled or donated to Pima Animal Control as containers for veterinary drugs used in spay and neuter programs. Among the permanent Dispose-A-Med locations are both the Pima County Sheriff’s Department Rincon District (8999 E. Tanque Verde Road) and the Tucson Police Department Eastside Rincon Substation (9670 E. Golf Links Road); both are open Monday through Friday, 8am-5pm. The following occasional sites will be available this month: Saturday, August 6th at Target, 10555 N. Oracle Road, 10am – 2pm Saturday, August 13th at Target, 3901 W. In 2008, I lost a lot of my vision in injuries sustained when I was robbed , and I have not been active in church since . However, it is through people like you that God’s blessings continued to be known . Bob Kridler and Pam Bridgmon have been there with communion the past three years. During this time , Pam and Bob assisted me in finding a senior living facility at Fellowship Square . In January 2016, I began the process of moving. Your church was willing to help me declutter my home for showing. (I know you had a great successful rummage sale!) Without Mark and Cheri Mitstifer, the sale of my home in the foothills could not have happened--they were with me every step of the way. They not only handled all of the negotiations, they came to my new apartment at Fellowship Square and hung all of my artwork , etc., and Cheri shopped for items I needed . I give deep thanks to the ministry of your congregation which has deeply touched me . The Lord was holding my hand during these rough days as I walked through it, and I saw Jesus in your lives as you were so giving to me . I saw compassion . Your encouraging words brought peace and hope , but most importantly you showed His love . May he return to you even more than you have given to me . I thank God for you. God’s blessings, Carol A. Still the needs continue to expand. In July 2015, when the need for foster homes became critical, LSS-SW began a Foster Care Program. Now over 100 children are sleeping in homes rather than on office floors. Lutheran Social Services of the Southwest is driven by the belief that every person has value and is a child of God. Because of faith in action LSS-SW provides 67,000 men, women and children with clothing, food, and shelter; 52,000 sleep with full stomachs because of food pantries; and 1,000 legal refugees from persecution and chaos are helped to build their lives in Tucson and Phoenix. Of the 1,500 or so men, women and children served by LSS-SW, it is estimated that at least 75% are at or below poverty level. For many, LSS-SW is the only contact they have outside their homes. And so LSS-SW empowers older adults with meals and in-home services that allow them to remain in their homes and independent for as long as they wish and are able. BLOOD DRIVE TVLC will be having a blood drive on Sunday, September 25th, from 8:00am-12:00pm in the NFLC. The American Red Cross has agreed to give us more help to help cut down on the wait time for participants. Please mark your calenders to participate in the life giving cause. The need for blood is critical, especially this time of year. If you have never donated blood, please consider helping out those in need. Questions? GROUPING: That action whereby things are included in a category, under a common heading, categorized for convenience. “Grouping” has the capability of being a worthy asset when organizing files, equipment, even ideas, however, knowing when to “group” and when not to “group” is crucial when dealing with people. When produce shopping and discovering an over ripe banana, I don’t go to the produce manager and ask him to remove all the bananas, common sense tells me yes, there is a bad banana, but upon continuing my search and observation, I realize there are plenty of good bananas left for my purchase. We have become a “grouping” society. Since many mental health diagnosis leave people unable to cope, function, or contribute on a level predetermined by society, they are “grouped” as useless, burdensome, and even dangerous. However, many people dealing with mental illness are extremely intelligent, empathetic, and hard working. With the help of proper support, medication, and opportunities they become contributing members of our world. But for any of this to occur, eyes and hearts have to be opened, blinders taken off, preconceived perceptions need to be replaced by actual education and knowledge. Does this only apply to mental illness? Information given on the shooting by the young man that killed members of a Bible Study group in a church basement this past year, stated that the shooter was a Lutheran. But did we decide Lutherans aren’t safe and all need to be curtailed from being a part of our communities? I hope not, because I know Lutherans in all corners of our country doing all sorts of great services and heartfelt gestures of love and caring. It behooves us to know when to “group” and when not to “group”. THE NEXT GRIEFSHARE AT TVLC IS SCHEDULED FOR THE FALL SEPTEMBER 6 - NOVEMBER 29 The fall sessions of GriefShare begin Tuesday, September 6th and will run through Tuesday, November 22nd.
