The idea within this theme is to show the children all different ways of
bouncing, whether this being with our bodies or with props. I have stated
alternatives for younger / older children but have based the examples on ages
Crawlers – 2 years and 2 years plus.
At the beginning of the session explain to the children what bouncing means.
Show them the difference between bouncing a ball and bouncing your monkey
mascot and they will see that it doesn’t bounce. Then use 2 more items, for
example, a bean bag and a tennis ball and get them to tell you which one
bounces.
If you don’t have parents to assist every child then you will need to adapt the
exercises slightly.
I wanna be like you
(Crawlers – 2 years)
Start with the youngsters sitting on your laps in a circle. You the leader can start
with Milo (mascot) and you are going to pass to the parent and child sitting to the
side of you. They will then pass to the following parent and child (pass the parcel).
Once Milo has made a complete circle tell the parents to stand up with their children.
Tell the parents to move round the circle encouraging their little ones to walk and
hold hands if they can. If they are very small then the parents can carry them. You
then change direction.
At this point Milo will be in the middle. Tell parents to pick up the children and fly
them into the middle and out, repeat 4 times. If they are too big to lift then the mums
can assist in jumping with the youngsters into the middle.
Following that and still standing the parents can then bounce the children on the
floor (as if they are jumping) with 3 small bounces and one big lift into the air.
Again, repeat this 4 times.
From there, still staying in the circle repeat the circle walking; clockwise, anticlockwise, in and out.
If you have music left at the end get the parents to dance with the children.

(2 years plus)
Start with Milo in the middle of the circle. (If you don’t have Milo the Monkey then
please use a cuddly toy)
Encourage the children to hold hands in the circle and move round clockwise and
then anti-clockwise.
Still holding hands move towards Milo and blow a big kiss, move away from Milo.
Repeat this 4 times.
Whilst the circle is large tell the children to let go hands and place them on their
knees. Encourage the children to bounce (basic knee bouncing). You can also get
them to slap their thighs at the same time if you think they can manage it.
Jump up and down and round and round, side to side.
There is an instrumental section – get the children to wiggle as much as they can,
shaking their arms legs, everything.
Get the children to hold hands again and repeat walking in the circle, clockwise, anticlockwise, into Milo with kisses and back

(Crawlers – 2 years)
Using medium –sized bouncing balls
Attempt to teach the children to bounce the ball, this will be fine for the older
children but if they don’t grasp this then get the children to chase after the
ball. The idea is that the children retrieve the ball and either pass back to the
parent to throw again or they throw it themselves.
For variety you could use lots of different sized balls such as tennis balls,
ping pong balls, anything that will bounce. I wouldn’t advise basketballs or
footballs though J
Another great idea is to use mini balls (the same size as a Pilates ball) so if
you are in the fitness industry and have these or are coordinating these
classes within a leisure centre you can use these. I have found that Amazon
and Ebay sell them reasonably cheap but you need to have a search
around.
Place the children on the ball and bounce them up and down on their
bottoms, they love it!
Bounce – Calvin Harris
(2 years plus)
You can repeat all of the above but can increase the difficulty level by asking the
children to count how many times their ball has bounced.
Get the children to stand in a line behind a beanbag or piece of ribbon and get
them to bounce their ball into a basket / box. They can’t throw it, it must bounce
on the floor first.
Bumping up and down in my little red wagon
(Crawlers – 2 years)
Parents sit on the floor with their legs straight and the youngsters facing
towards them. When the music starts the parents start to bounce their knees.
When the lyrics say “one wheels off and the axle’s broken…” tip the child to the
side, then to the other side (4 times in total).
“Freddy’s going to fix it with his hammer” rock the baby down so they are
almost laying flat against your legs (like row row row your boat (4 times in
total).
Instrumental – clap hands
Everything above is repeated a second time.

When the music starts the children begin to gallop around the room.
When the lyrics say “one wheels off and the axle’s broken…” the children jump
down to the floor into a ball and then jump up into a star shape (4 times in
total).
“Freddy’s going to fix it with his hammer” feet together and jumping up and
down, jump round to the right in a circle, round to the left in a circle and then
jumping up and down again.
Instrumental – clap hands
Everything above is repeated a second time.
Animals that bounce…
Frogs – Five little speckled frogs
Rabbits – Sleeping bunnies
Monkeys on a bed – Five little monkeys
Kangaroos - The Wonderful thing about Tigger
It is advised to use the visual aids so the children can see the
animals for themselves (please see back of teaching guide)
Five little speckled frogs
(can be used for both groups but the older children can stand up in the circle if
preferred).
Singing the song with the parents, most should know this song. Actions to the
song:
Yum Yum – rub tummy
Jumped into the pool – lift baby in air and down. The older children can jump in
and out of circle if they wish.
Glug Glug – make a beak with one hand and use it to peck the nose of their
child. The older children can do this beak motion with both hands.
Sleeping Bunnies
(For the older children only, please refer to your first teaching guide for
instructions).
Five little monkeys
(For the older children only. This is more of a singling song.)
Start by telling the children to jump up and down as if they were on a bed.
Get the children to rub their head at the right time in the song.
When the song says “called the doctor” pretend you are holding a phone.
When the song says “no more monkeys jumping on the bed” – point your finger
as if you are being told off.
Kangaroos
You can do a variety of exercises whilst pretending to be kangaroo’s and more
importantly getting the children to elevate themselves off the floor.
You can have all kangaroos (children) lined up on one side of the room and
they have to hop (both feet together) to the other side to see who wins.
You could make it into partner work with the parents. The parent and child
stand on opposite sides of the room and they have to hop to one another.
Teach the children canon (which means only one child moving at one point).
Get them standing in a line, start at one end and move to the other end with
only one child jumping at one point. This is tricky but fantastic when they
achieve it. The cannot go until the child in front of them has been.
Space hoppers!
I haven’t included any exercises with space hoppers as these are fairly
expensive but if you have a few or have been able to buy them second hand
these would be great to implement into the bouncing day! The children can
take it in turns using the space hoopers, perhaps do a relay!
Bouncy Castle – Kidzone
You might like to purchase the spikey flashing bouncy balls. I got mine from
Amazon and the link will be in the portal.
I close the curtains and make the room as dark as I can. For the younger
children they just enjoy watching the balls flash.
The aim for the older children is to make sure the lights in the balls don’t switch
off which means they have to be quick and keep bouncing the balls. They love
this exercise and really grasp what they have to do.
Bouncing Ball Boogie – Sugar Chile Robinson
Great song to use instruments with, it has a great beat. At the beginning you
can start by shaking a clear beat and on the instrumental get them to shake the
instruments nice and fast.
The children can dance around with their instruments.
Match the lyrics when bouncing high, low in the middle. Show this with the
instruments.
You can also incorporate start and stop, counting to 8 and then stopping. Use
as many variations as you can think.
If you have more than one type of instrument get them to lay them out in front
of them and pick one to see if they can remember the names of them.
Bounce – Tweenies
Small dance routine
Start with legs apart. hands on thighs. Bounce in time to the music, then
move from one leg to the other then repeat. March on the spot swinging
arms and then move in your own little.
Jump down to floor and bounce on the floor. Kneel down on the floor and
tap hands in time to the music. Straighten arms and move from side to side
like an aeroplane and jump up.
Slap thighs twice and clap hands twice (4 times in total)
Washing machine arms (rolling hands)
Reach right arm up, then left arm, bring right arm down and then left one
( two times in total)
Repeat the whole thing twice.
Once completed get the children to place one of their hands into the circle
and shout 1,2,3 yeah. On ‘yeah’ they shoot their hands into the air.
Circuit fun!
Bounce – Scotty and LuLu and Jump – House of Pain
Props you might like to use:
•  Crawling tunnel(s)
•  Hoops
•  Trampoline
•  Mat
•  Balls
•  Basket / box
Lay out the equipment in the order above. Get the children to form a line.
They start by crawling through the tunnel, jumping with both feet into the
hoops. Bouncing on the trampoline and jumping off. (Would be quite nice to
encourage a star jump here). They collect a ball and have one attempt to
bounce into the basket.
Brahms Lullaby – Celine Dion
Cool down
Get the children to use the light sticks or the spikey light up balls. You can also
get them to lay on the floor and pretend they are a star. You can get them to
close their eyes.
