Opening Day Watkins Glen April 19th 2015 by Jeannette Rockdashil
I will start with saying I have never been on a race track in a car. I was
up for the experience and my husband convinced me it would be ok.
Our journey began about 7:15am on Sunday 4/19 leaving the house
meeting up the north group of PCA at McDonalds in Lafayette, it continued on down to Dryden Hotel for breakfast. From there we left to
head down to Watkins Glen Race Track. The drive was amazing, with
the warm weather, the sun was shining, not a lot of traffic and the
scenery was beautiful with the trees budding and everything so green.
The anticipation of going out on a racetrack that I have never experience was giving me butterflies n my stomach. Unfortunately those
butterflies went to complete fear in a short time.
We started by entering the gates as a group, following each other
down to line up by the garages . We had to wait for our group to be
able to hit the race track. We heard the workers warning folks the
rules on the race track, the dos and don’t. It was then our turn to start
entering the race track, there was no turning back now. We were
down on the race track in a flash, hitting over the speed limit before I
could ask, “Is this really how fast we can go?” My husband was in
heaven, hitting the corners to hit the breaks and start over again. I
never thought the feeling of going fast on a race track would be what I
was feeling. My heart was in my shoes before we hit the second corner and I was saying a few times (many times) when is this going to be
over.
As we came into the last stretch of lap 3 I was relieved this ride was
over and I would be soon getting of the car to stand on flat ground. My
husband had a blast and would do it all again but I will not be in the
passenger seat the next time. Happy Racing my Porsche Friends.

Volunteers Wanted by Barbara Conley
The 2014-2015 charity years have come to a close and we should all feel proud about the
great support we provided for Mom’s House in Johnson City over the last 2 years. Now we
need to form a new charity committee for the 2016-2017 years.
If you are motivated, creative and enjoy giving back to your community, this is the committee for you! This committee will choose our new charity that we will fund for the next 2
years from a selection of nominations submitted by our CNYPCA members. The committee is also responsible for finding a location for the Annual Charity Auction that is held in
the Spring and planning that evening’s program. The committee also looks for creative
ways to raise funds for, or provide hands-on help to our chosen charity throughout the
year.
If this sounds like you, please contact Barbara Conley at secretary@cnypca.org or call me
at 315-635-5144 to volunteer by September 30, 2015.

Current PCA Club Racing results by Chris White
We have a bunch of CNY club racers doing well this year. It’s a lot of hard
work and I can tell you that its not cheap either! For a club our size we have
a pretty good showing in the national club racing events. Next time you get
a chance its worth going to see a PCA Club race.

Here is What I’m Thinking
Chris White CNY PCA President
Greetings fellow CNY Porsche Club members. Its been a busy summer so far – both with Porsche cars/
people and my continuing consulting job in Idaho.
When back in NY in June we went to the 6 hours at Watkins Glen. Friday was classic Watkins Glen
weather….the good kind! Sunny and upper 70’s with great racing on the track and lots of interesting
events in the infield.
David and Cathie by the “RumBum” Porschee
10
Here is What I’m Thinking Con’t
My Son David hanging out with the ‘Grid Girls”!
On Saturday we had the other kind of classic Watkins Glen weather….rainy cold and windy! We offered lunch to all club members on Saturday as well as a guided tour of the Kelly Moss pits, trailers
and cars. Kelly Moss supports 7 or 8 Porsche GT3 cup cars.
11
Here is What I’m Thinking Con’t
The Porsche Cup Cars were one of the support races for the weekend. Jeff Stone spent an hour filling
our group in on what his company can do to support racers at the track along with a nice review of
Kelly Mosses’ racing record. It was a great place to hang out - out of the rain!
A 911 Cup Car being pushed around in the rain
Three weeks later we were back for the vintage races at Watkins Glen. There have been a group of us
camping at this event for more than a decade and this year it was just the Hurds and us at the usual
camp site – we did have quite a few of the rest of the club visiting during the day. This weekend the
weather cooperated and Friday, Saturday and Sunday were dry days except a small sprinkle late Friday night. The racing was great with quite a few Porsches out there including four club members –
Bruce Parker, Chuck Gladle and Mitch and Jim VanNordstrand-. All the CNY racers had good clean
races.
12
Here is What I’m Thinking Con’t
The funny story for the weekend came from the Jaguar guys – they had a fast autocross course set up
and they would toss you the keys to a new ‘R’ version of the F type and you got three laps with an instructor in the right seat. I have to admit they were pretty nice cars and made some great sounds. I
went down to their area on Saturday with Cathie to give it a try – had a blast. Cathie did not have her
drivers license with her so she had to settle for a ride with one of the ‘instructors’. Later in the evening
Cathie was telling some other folks about her ride around in the convertible Jag at Watkins Glen with
her dashing instructor ‘Roberto’…..we all chuckled at the vision of the dashing instructor created by the
story. The next day I was back there as they opened (only one drive allowed per day!), my ‘instructor’
was Sam Shultz, I have known Sam for a while and we had a good time chatting waiting for our turn. I
also found out that the dashing Roberto was actually Ex F1 and Indy driver Roberto Guerreo!
The races were great, the weather was great and of course the company was great!

Other adventures?....Of Course! As my client out here in Idaho keeps requesting my company I continue to make the best use of the Cayenne touring the Idaho and Utah countryside. The Cayenne is
really holding up to the continued abuse of hard off roading. I am impressed by how an 11 year old
125,000 mile Porsche is surviving everything that I am throwing at it. See more info in another article!
Hopefully you are all playing with your Porsches - if you have an interesting story please share it with
the rest of us!

Treasurers resumes
LIN HURD
Dear CNYPCA Members,
I am honored to have been nominated to serve our region as Treasurer for 2015-2017.
I want to tell you about myself and my qualifications for the position of Treasurer of CNYPCA.
My husband Ed and I joined the Porsche Club of America in 1999 when we purchased our
first Porsche, a yellow 1987 944S. We still own that car which is now used mostly for Driver’s
Education events. Our other Porsches include a 1986 928 and a 1995 968. We also own an
Audi S5 which I have tracked once. My current track car when not driving the 944S is a blue
Mustang Cobra convertible.
We enjoy participating in many CNY and other regions’ events such as Driver’s Education,
autocross, rally, concours, the charity auction, tours, tech sessions, and other social gatherings. I am currently a Driver’s Education national instructor. In the past several years, Ed
and I co-host the annual SVRA vintage race weekend CNY picnic at Watkins Glen. I have
also served as Registrar for Zone One which covers the 18 or so regional clubs in the northeast
and Canada.
I have also been active in the Glen Region Sports Car Club of America where I served as
Treasurer. As Treasurer I oversaw an annual operating budget of $300,000. My responsibilities included managing all aspects of the club’s financial records including races, track
rental, autocross, banquets, rallies, donations, charitable contributions, insurance, receipts
and disbursements, and investments utilizing Quickbooks computer software.
In my professional life, I retired after 30 years in law enforcement to change careers to become the Director of the Emergency Communications Center for Tompkins County. After 7
years, I retired again and now work for a not for profit transportation company for senior and
disabled persons.
Thank you for your consideration,
Lin Hurd

PCA Elections 2015 Con’t
BRUCE DONOHUE
Bruce is the current Treasurer and has served CNY for the past 2 years. He is particularly well
suited for the position as he has been a CPA for 35 years. After graduating from Cornell University
with BS and MBA degrees, he worked in his chosen field since 1977 and opened his own firm in LaFayette 20 years ago.
Bruce is a 10-year PCA member who grew up in CNY. Married with two grown children, he is an
admitted "motorhead", with a broad-ranging interest in automobiles, and is most proud of his
beautifully-prepared 1984 944. He spent many hours bringing this car back to prime condition. His interest in cars began before junior high, racing karts in high school and getting his first
motorcycle at 15 and still owning his 1968 Triumph Bonneville motorcycle purchased in college. This background, and his 2004 acquisition of a very rough 944, prepared him for his involvement in PCA.
Bruce enjoys many of the events CNY offers particularly driver's education which he has participated since 2005, concours, social events including planning & hosting the summer CNYPCA picnic’s with Sue Penny the past 2 years, and especially meeting and interacting with our CNY members as well as those from other PCA regions. He is a firm believer in "It's not just the cars, it's the
people."
He also summarizes the accounting and prepares the Zone 1 tax return.
Bruce states that he would like to serve CNY as Treasurer for the
next 2 years.
You have several options for voting this year, we
are trying to accommodate all levels of technical
interest! Shortly there will be an email blast to all
members that have supplied PCA with their email address – that (in my humble opinion) will
be the easiest way to vote. That will require your membership number and name and address filled in as well as your vote. If you are not a fan of ‘vote by wire’ you can fill out the
ballot below and send it to our club secretary.

I have a 2002 911 C2. Last year I sent the motor (via crate) to TuneRS Motorsports for a complete
re-build (see their ads in Panorama and Excellence or www.TuneRSmotorsports.com. They also
ported, flowed, and polished my heads. All bearings, rings, dual row IMS upgrade with oil feeder,
honed the cylinders, new rings. It has H&R lowering springs, front strut brace, fab speed intake and
sport exhaust, light-weight flywheel and sport clutch (new). The car dyno'd at 320hp at the wheel 365 at the crank. It has a great Porsche short shift kit as well. The motor and clutch now have 4000
miles on them. I've not raced, DE'd or auto crossed the car since the motor and clutch were installed. It's a great R/T. I drive it to work daily in good weather, but it can easily be converted to a
full track car with little effort. Everything works. I hit an animal at about 40 mph two years ago - the
bonnet and light were replaced and the fender was repaired, thus the entire front 1/2 of the car was
repainted - it looks great. I'm asking $27,000. I have about $40K in the car (I preventatively put in a
new water pump and low temp thermostat and a new serp belt, plugs etc.). I have two sets of wheels
19's and 18's.

More Cayenne Adventures! By Chris White
I saw a funny music related quote the other day –
“All I’m saying is, at any point during that ride through the desert he could have given the horse a
name”
That made me think that I have been driving my Cayenne all over the mountains and deserts of Idaho
and Utah for over 50k miles… and I have not given ‘it’ a name….not even a gender! I have to admit that
I do develop a bond with the vehicles that I like. Usually why I keep them far longer than a sane person
would. I contemplated selling the Cayenne and getting a lower mile ‘younger’ version that has not been
‘filed tested’ as much as my Cayenne….but then I felt a certain loyalty to a vehicle that has transported
me to so many wonderful places over some very difficult terrain. No mechanical failures - that gave me
a warm and fuzzy feeling for MY Cayenne….the tires on the other hand….they have not been very endearing!
So here are some photos from some recent adventures

White Rim Trail – Canyonlands Utah
The White Rim trail is supposed to take two days to traverse. The trial follows the Green and Colorado rivers around the base of Canyonlands National Park. The trial is 100 miles of single lane dirt /
rock road with some steep pitches and loose rock traverses with big drops.
Done in 7 hours!

Onion Creek Road – Moab Utah
I found Onion Creek Road by mistake. I was in Moab for the weekend and the big name parks were very
crowded – Arches and Canyonlands National parks. So I set out on my own to find something interesting. Driving out of Moab to the east I spied some interesting rock towers. I always have my detailed
topo maps so I took a look and found a nice ‘road’ that went out into the wilderness.
This is the actual color of the rocks….my son decided that the rock were ‘meat colored’. After the initial
‘ewww’ reaction I think he actually nailed the color description!!

Syracuse Oktoberfest Report by Rich Jeffers
Syracuse Oktoberfest report
Hi Chris,
All who attended the Great Syracuse Oktoberfest reportedly had a good time, but attendance was
disappointing to me. We had 8 cars on Saturday and 8 today, Sunday, 3 of which were repeats from
Saturday. That’s low compared with last year, and I think we were affected by two factors. (1) The
weather Saturday morning was iffy with scattered sprinkles, but by late morning we had great sunshine and it turned out to be a terrific day weather-wise. I think the early weather may have deterred some of our members. (2) The bigger factor was probably competition with the Family Picnic. I think two events in one weekend is a big drain on members time; weekends are precious for
many of us (even retirees). I strongly suggest that for future planning we don’t double up events on
the same weekend, especially on the same day.
Hope all is well in Idaho,
Rich
PS - A piece of good news from the Oktoberfest is that our car display was visited by a lot of people,
including Porsche owners who are not PCA members and were not even aware that a CNY club existed. I did not have any brochures with me but I directed all the interested folks to our CNY website, so we might have gained some new recruits.

Autocross Results – Cherry Valley 6/13/15
CNY’s first autocross of the season was well attended and all the participants said it was a great experience
learning how to get the most out of their Porsches. The overwhelming response from the first timers was an
amazement in how their Porsches performed. There is so much potential in these cars that you will never
really get an idea on how much until you get to try them out on a closed course in safe conditions.
As part of the CNY Autocross events the days starts out with a ‘track walk’ with the layout of the track explained by an expert and that is followed by a car control clinic for those that are interested in having an instructor on board to help figure out the track and the car. This is a great learning experience for those that
have not been involved in high performance driving – I highly recommend this to any Porsche owner, even if
you have no interest in the competitive autocross events come on down and learn a little more about your Porsche!
Co-chairs Mike Darminio and Gil Wristrup did a great job sorting out the timing gear and putting on a great
event. Thanks to Gil and Mike for taking on this huge effort!!

Tour to The 1,000 Islands Concours d’Elegance by Richard Jeffers
On Saturday, July 11th, 28 people (17 cars) drove together to the 1,000 Islands Concours
d’Elegance, at Clayton, with a stop en route for breakfast at the Mapleview Family Restaurant. We were directed to a reserved parking area at the concours and given discount
tickets to the show, windshield placards and commemorative dash plates. Brad Hall (356)
and Chris Heiselman (GT3RS) were asked to display their cars on the show field. The
theme of the show was British Royalty with many Aston Martins, Jaguars and other British marques being presented for judging. The organizers of the show expressed their appreciation for the CNY PCA support of this event.

Autocross 2015 2nd Event 8/23/15
Our first club autocross was a big success and everybody from novice to expert had a good time!
For those that haven’t been there is a cross between autocross and road course! lots of fun and no
cones! just follow the paved road and enjoy! If you have not done an autocross or DE before this is a
great chance to check out a driving event.
We have also issued a challenge to the Corvette club to show up and have a friendly competition for
best team time of the day
The official competition is for Porsches and it will be based on PCA classes but you can also bring a
different vehicle if you must – you will be running for fun and not be scored.
Please RSVP to Mike so we have an idea on how many are coming. darm911@windstream.net
here is the info from Mike Darminio:
The autocross season is here! Autocrossing is low speed event, a first and second gear timed
event .

Eurocar 2015
By Richard D. Jeffers
.
It was a gloomy day with periods of sun and showers until the deluge hit at about 2:30
PM. However, Porsche pushers stepped up to the bar with 29 on the field (at least 17
PCA members), which was enough to again win the ribbon for “most members from
another club.” I will write an article for the newsletter when I get the official results
from the MG club. My tally is:
Class 17 (pre-1991 911s):
first Gerald Reginelli
second Bob DeLuke
third Mark Singer
Class 18 (pre-1991 all other models):
first Brad Hall
second Mark Baranello
third Pat Rommeraux
Class 23 (post-1991 Porsches):
first Ann Schneiderman
second Joe Pennington
third (Not awarded as almost no ballots were turned in for this class. Apparently most
of the assigned judges for this class were among the 36 no-shows or just did not understand the new judging process).

2015 Cobweb Concours Results
2015 Cobweb Concours Results
I’d like to thank all the CNY members who again came out in record fashion to
the Cobweb Concours. This year surpassed last year in both attendance and
Porsche turnout. We had 40 Porsches on display and 57 members joined in the
fun and festivities. My special thanks on behalf of CNY-PCA goes to the staff at
Burdick, Drivers Village for making this an event we all look forward to. Kent Appleby always tops the previous year with this year being no exception. The
theme was German cars, German food and no one was disappointed. Give always, music and trophies are greatly appreciated. Please note this has been an
ongoing Concours with Burdick for over 20 years. Please thank a staff member
at Drivers Village when you can. Listed below are the results. Thank you all
again and I look forward to next year with you!
