Don is a native of Walkerville, Montana, and a graduate of
the University of Montana,
Missoula, with a Bachelor’s of
Arts in education. He started
his career as a writer and
editor for two Montana daily
newspapers (The Montana
Standard and Missoulian)
before going to Washington,
D.C., in 1973 as a press
aide to Western Montana
Don Brunell
Among the various committees Don serves upon are
Conference of State Manufacturers Associations, National
Council of State Chambers, Kids Chance of Washington, US
Chamber of Commerce, National Industrial Council of State
Associations Group, Governor’s Global Competitiveness
Council, and Washington Alliance for a Competitive
Economy.
Don has served in the US Army as part of the Special Forces
and retired as a Major in the Washington Army National
Guard. During his tenure in the Washington National Guard
he commanded the 122nd Public Affairs Detachment which
won consecutive Thomas Jefferson (Department of Defense)
and Keith L. Ware (Department of the Army) awards (1985
and 1986) for its publication, The Evergreen. Don and his
wife, Jeri, live in Olympia and have six adult children and
eight grandchildren.

Continuous Improvement
The definition of “INSANITY” doing the same thing over and over day after day, always getting the same results as you did the
day before. How do we break this vicious cycle? By realizing we’re not perfect, that we will make mistakes and yes, and that
we have room to improve. Mistakes do happen, the key is not repeating the same mistake twice. Evaluate, try, evaluate
and try again, until we work through our mistakes, finding a better process or give our members a better product
then what they currently have year after year. Offering great opportunities toward improving your business through
advertising and networking, we shouldn’t have to look for membership; membership should be looking for us, when
this is happening we’ll know we’re on the right path.

The chamber staff is working feverishly trying to upgrade your Chamber Connection monthly newsletter, cleaning
up some of the verbal clutter, hoping to give you a reason or value to read “your” Connection. Of course if we don’t
get the monthly newsletter out in a timely fashion, where dates and events are time sensitive, then it’s not as effective
to you or your business. I know the monthly newsletter hasn’t made it out in a timely manner, I apologize and we’ll
strive to do better.
I would also like to thank Jock Pring for taking time out of his busy schedule to give suggestions, ways the Chamber can
improve its value to our members. Without suggestions we could go INSANE doing the same thing over and over producing
the same results.
23rd Dogwood Festival
Runs Month of April
A month full of adult and children activities highlights the 23rd
Annual Dogwood Festival in the Lewiston-Clarkston Valley during
April. The festival features art exhibitions, basketball and golf
tournaments, concerts, fun runs, delicacies for the palate, a car
show, and the annual Art Under the Elms celebration.

Clarkston Clean Up Day - April 14, 2007
This year the Clarkston Clean-Up Day and the Refresh the Valley have teamed
up to brighten our wonderful community on Saturday, April 14, 2007 from 8
am to 12:30 pm. This is when the Clarkston Chamber Tourism Committee and
the Refresh the Valley Committee heads the projects of cleaning up garbage,
pulling weeds, and just plain old-fashioned spring cleaning to spruce up our
fair cities.
On the Clarkston side, everyone is asked to gather at the Clarkston
Chamber office at 8 am. And on the Lewiston side, everyone is to meet at
the Brackenberry Square at 8 am. From these two locations, groups will be
disbursed to plant, weed, rake and sweep the Valley in different areas.
Then everyone is invited back to Brackenberry Square from 12 – 12:30 pm for
hot dogs and pop.
So don’t forget to bring your gloves, shovels, rakes and brooms for the
Clarkston Clean-Up Day and Refresh the Valley.

Community Involvement
It is now April and I can take a deep breath as March is over and two of our largest events have gone off without a
hitch, the Clarkston Jr. Miss and the Spring Break Dinner and Auction.

This year’s Clarkston Jr. Miss was amazing! The 20 young ladies that participated this year should all be proud
of their accomplishments. For three months, they put in long hours learning the fitness and poise routines and
practicing for the talent competition, all the while still attending school, doing homework, playing in sports and
other extra curricular activities. Along with the young ladies, I can not forget to mention the committee members
that help to put this program on. These dedicated people work hard to bring our community an outstanding
program and it shows because each year the event is sold out. Each and everyone one of them deserve a round of
applause for the dedication and hard work they do.
On the last Friday of March, the Chamber had its annual fundraiser event, the Spring Break Dinner & Auction. What a great time
everyone had bidding on some fabulous trips and items. Our committee did a wonderful job in organizing this event. I would like to thank all our
members who donated to the live and silent auctions or donated their time in making this event a huge one again this year.
At our April luncheon, we have the privilege of Don Brunell, President of the Association of Washington Business (AWB), come speak to our members.
This is a great opportunity for us to learn what is happening on the west side of the state. Don will be speaking about AWB’s need for input to help
make our state more attractive for employers, workers and families. Don will also share AWB’s perspective on legislative and state issues, as he meets
quarterly with Governor Gregoire to share business concerns, as well as meet with many of the state agency executives to discuss critical issues. So
mark your calendar for April 11 and plan to attend this very informative luncheon.
In closing, I would like to personally thank each and every one of our members, the Board of Directors, and all the committee members who
volunteered their time during my transition. Without your help and support, this transition wouldn’t have gone so smoothly. THANK YOU!

Willow Center Seeks
Support Group Volunteers
during their grieving process. Oftentimes, the grief of children is
misdiagnosed as a particular disorder or children are labeled “problem
children” because they don’t have the tools to cope with their grief. Willow
Center for Grieving Children provides this support in a safe place where
emotions and symptoms of grief are welcomed and understood.
Willow Center for Grieving Children is seeking volunteers to work as
facilitators with our children and adult support groups. Volunteers should
be over 18, have an interest in working with children and adults, and must
successfully pass a background check. Volunteers are asked to make a
minimum one-year commitment to Willow Center.
Volunteers will complete a 26-hour facilitator training to be held this April
and May. Facilitator training teaches people how to assist children and
adults process their grief. Training is open to all interested persons. Upon
completion, those interested in volunteer training will be interviewed and
evaluated as to their readiness and appropriateness for facilitating group.
Willow Center has been in existence since 2000 and the day to day
operations have been supported solely by volunteers who work as board
members, clinical coordinators and facilitators. In 2006 Willow Center was
accepted as the newest Twin County United Way partner agency.
