Gary Baseman was born in Los Angeles in 1960 to Polish
Gary Baseman was born in Los Angeles in 1960 to Polish-born Holocaust survivors. He began his career as a successful illustrator in the 1980s (The New Yorker, Time, Rolling Stone magazine), then transitioned into fine art in 1999, gaining wide recognition for his whimsical and imaginative paintings. In 2000 Baseman achieved popular renown as creator and executive producer of Disney’s Emmy and BAFTA award-winning animation series Teacher’s Pet, which ran from 2000 to 2002, and was made into a feature film in 2004. At around the same time, his iconic artwork began to infiltrate American homes through the best-selling board game Cranium. His innovative vinyl figurines have been produced all around the world, and some of his limited-edition characters, such as Dumb Luck, Toby, ChouChou, and Buckingham Warrior, are highly sought-after collectibles. Gary Baseman is one of today’s most prominent and multi-faceted Los Angeles-based artists. From his early works as an illustrator to his designer toys, paintings, performances, videos, and photographs, Baseman’s work explores the human condition and the complexity of relationships, family, and history. He has exhibited his fine art throughout the United States, Europe, South America, and Asia. Baseman's retrospective exhibition The Door is Always Open is currently on display at Shanghai chi K11 Art Museum featuring over 500 objects displayed in a unique, immersive home environment. Showcasing 25 years of Baseman's boundary-defying art, this exhibition made its debut at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles in 2013, and the following year traveled to the Museum of Contemporary Art in Taipei. Coach designer Stuart Vevers invited Gary Baseman to collaborate on his Spring/Summer 2015 collection. The artist developed a secret society of imaginary creatures named Buster Le Fauve, Candy Darling, Kiki, Ziggy, and Iggy invading bags, t-shirts and sweaters. This collection will be in avant-premiere at colette starting from January 19th.
