| Fall 2010 Newsletter | the Book Mailer Newsletter (fine fly fishing books since 1981) PO Box 1273 Helena, MT 59624 1-406-443-1888 • www.thebookmailer.com • orders@thebookmailer.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------the Book Mailer strives to select the newest, most requested titles, along with innovative, unique tools and materials. For the soul purpose of enriching your fly-fishing pleasure. They say you forget your troubles on a trout stream, but that’s not quite it. What happens is that you begin to see where your troubles fit into the grand scheme of things, and suddenly they’re just not such a big deal anymore. —John Gierach Learning from the Water Fishing Tactics & Fly Design for the Toughest Trout by René Harrop As usual the Book Mailer boasts a wonderful collection of new titles and films. Learning from the Water was a shoo-in for the front cover. Almost. We aim to select a quality "how-to" title from a familiar author, sometimes literature trumps the day, but René Harrop has always held his special place in my list of favorite writers. With Ed Engle’s Trout Lessons (pg. 3) also covering tactics for tough trout, we were left wondering how different or alike these two titles would be. While basically covering the same topic they are as different as night and day, all the while delivering the same weight. René is gentle and guiding in his teaching and brings with his lessons a flow akin to a wide, deep river. His chapters average between 7 to 12 pages each and cover twenty-three topics. The first half covers presentation and tactics, while the rest concentrate on bugs and their representations. René’s book is more of a spiritual journey and the chapters "A Lesson in Humility:, "Fishing the Clock" (this was a new theory for me—it might not be, what you think it is!), and his tribute, "Men of the Water" resonate home. I also found René’s book to be geared towards a more advanced angler (those long leader tactics will have me scaring fish for the time being). There is just no way you want to pass up having Learning the Water in your library. For the coming winter evenings this is a perfect diversion in literature, as well as an inspiration at the fly tying vise. #–#–#–#–#–#–#–# Word is out! —COMING MID-MAY 2011— 90 fly patterns detailing the insects & the patterns developed to imitate them ~~ Photos by Bonnie & René Harrop, Toshi Karita, Rich Paini, Masa Katsumata No Shortage of Good Days ~~ by John Gierach Reserve Your Autographed Copy! Gov. John Bohlinger, chairman of the drought committee. Statewide, June and August 2010 produced the most precipitation since 1993, and for the water year that runs from October to August, this year will go down as the wettest since 1996-1997, according to the National Weather Service. The heaviest precipitation fell in central and eastern Montana. In our home area around Helena, that translated to 10 consecutive days of rain in May, (very little fishing). June gave us 19 days of measurable precipitation. The skies cleared for much of July, with only nine days of rain (one of them which was the 4th of July required long underwear and no fishing), but that jumped up to 13 days of clouds and rain in August—including six days where almost 2 inches of rain fell. (Which translates to no fishing, total amazement and a certain growing attitude of "fishing" withdrawal). The first 19 days in September it rained half of them, including over the Labor Day weekend. In fact it rained 9 out of the past 16 weekends. We welcomed it during the work week, but couldn't it give us a small break on our day off? Finally, the last week gave us some record warm temperatures. Summer had finally arrived—for one week. Completely updated 2nd Edition of 1997 "Reading the Water" Teaches everything the fly fisher needs to know about stream structure, trout food and effective flies so that you can better utilize your time on the water by focusing on the areas most likely to hold fish. A comprehensive source for finding trout in all types of water. Covers riffles, runs, pools, flats, pocket water and bank water. Learn how to find trout by studying current, temperatures, oxygen levels and food sources. 141 color photos & black-&-white illustrations; 5.5 x 8.25 inches; 320 pages [[[[[[[[[[[[ ~Watch for New Releases by Stackpole in 2011 ~ Charlie's Fly Box by Charlie Craven Matching Major Eastern Hatches by Henry Ramsay —— And then came Montana fall. Last October we had an unusual weather phenomenon—a "black frost". I don't recall one of these in my lifetime and was unfamiliar with the term. From the talk going around, I hesitated to believe it could be that bad. Every tree, bush, shrub– every green thing stopped right in the middle of their fall cycle. Everywhere, on the river, in town, as far as my eyes could see. The colors never changed, the leaves never left their limb. They hung there dead & black until the new spring growth pushed them off—"if" there was new growth, many didn't survive. It was ugly and severe. But this fall, leaves rain down on our city streets. The smell along the river bank is rich and the feast of colors brilliant as they slowly scatter leaf by leaf. And water is everywhere. Clear, abundant and cool. I think this fall, fishing has been tougher, due to the amount of water cover the fish have. I don't begrudge them. I’ve spent the past three weekends on different waters trying to make up for lost time. Success when it has come has been sweet. But each day has been a gift that will be unwrapped as we settle into winter. And oh, pretty the gift will be remembered. If you haven't fished here this fall, I am sorry. [[[[[[[[[[[[ Just Released ~ Oliver Edwards' Flytyers' Masterclass by Oliver Edwards The classic fly-tying book is now available once more! First published in 1994, Flytyers' Masterclass showcases the talents of British fly-tyer Oliver Edwards. Using his excellent knowledge of entomology and recognizing specific characteristics of each species of fly he is creating, Edwards has developed his trademark of ultra-realistic flies which are highly regarded for their near perfect imitation to the natural. Twenty of Edwards' key patterns are described step-by-step in highly detailed illustrations and written instructions. His drawing and writing style is clear and concise, guiding you through each stage of the pattern with ease. Featured patterns include the baetis nymph, ephemerella nymph, rhyacophila larva, and Klinkhamer special. Many flytying techniques are taught including the dubbing loop, nonspin dry fly wings, permanently splayed tails, semi-translucent abdomens, 'roped' bodies, shortened natural-tip hackles, mohican winging, nylon-backed caddis wings, abdomen 'gilling'. The new edition features high-resolution, close-up color photos by Terry Griffiths which depict each fly in stunning detail, and a new introduction by Malcolm Greenhalgh. An essential book for any serious fly-tyer's library. —— I have a brand new pair of Chota women's waders which I love and they've come in mighty handy. I fished the Big Horn for the first time, on a day that was hot and fishing was slow. The very next day chilly, gusty, and I recall some rain/sleet, but the fishing improved and I want to go back and try again. While I am not used to "sharing" the water with so many, everyone was congenial and the Big Horn is an accommodating river with much to offer. This year's precipitation has left us with almost no fire season, full river banks, and strong seasonal growth. It hasn't changed the beetle kill in our forests but I hope in "nature's way" it has somewhat kept it in check. The fish have had an easy summer with cool water, plenty of food, and space to grow and spawn—and I wasn't much of a threat! As we enter into winter, our resting time, we have no where to go but up and that bodes very well for Spring 2011. But better get out there & enjoy, so far it is looking like Fall 2010 might just last a weekend or two longer . . . Freewheeling Tactics & Alternative Techniques for the Difficult Days by Ed Engle Long name for a trout book. Some titles do have "overkill". Not this one, I love it. Ed Engle is one of those handful of authors that is the reason the Book Mailer came about and why we are still here. It is works like this that is best shared. There is so much between the pages—27 of them on Tight-Line Tactics, with illustrations, photos and specific advice for just everything. You are going to love this. Other chapters are: Nymphing (18 pages), Attractor Flies (20 pages), Meadow Streams, (20 pages), Catching Difficult Trout (22 pages), Small-Stream Finesse (25 pages). The last chapter is Oddities, Dry Flies that Sink, Spiders and Triggers (22 Pages). There is so much good stuff here, some of which you probably already know, but the linkage and the new details are going to make you a better fisher. The book is well laid out, a pleasure to hold and read. "...a book that in its eight chapters presents a wealth of to-the-point technical information about nymphing, attractor flies, tight-line tactics, catching difficult trout and oddities, among other topics, along with some tweaks to fly-fishing's conventional wisdom." —Karl Licis, Denver Post It has been a difficult Montana summer to fish, our weather was very cool and wet—long underwear on the 4th of July, and at times it seemed the rain would never stop. Banks have been full all summer, so the High-Water Strategies (26 pages) came in really handy! From Publishers Weekly— Driving on the Rim by Thomas McGuane McGuane (Gallatin Canyon) adds another rueful portrait to his gallery of flawed masculine types, set, again, in Big Sky Country. Berl Pickett is a small town doctor whose ill-advised decision to try to cover up an old friend’s suicide attempt leads to dire consequences when she later dies from her injuries: his clinic privileges are suspended and he faces a possible criminal negligence charge. With plenty of time on his hands, Berl reverts to his former profession of house painter. Between jobs, he contemplates his past—seduced at 14 by his aunt, professionally inspired by a kindly doctor who alone saw the potential in him—and contends with a couple of women: Jocelyn, a pilot with a shady acquaintance, and colleague Jinx Mayhall, a quiet beauty who discomfits him with her pointed inquiries into his character. The novel is more contemplative than dramatic, ending, as it does, on a decidedly anticlimactic note, but readers who relish McGuane’s signature descriptions of hunting, fishing, birding, and cruising (in a rattletrap Olds Starfire 88) will once again be satisfied with the bard of the Absaroka Mountains’ laid-back take on contemporary American manhood. Trout Water illustrates the compelling mystery and complexity of these rivers and the diverse trout species that call them home. Brought to life through Jim Rowinski’s artistic vision, it reveals the magical world of running water, elusive trout, and the bond between man and river. The book follows the geological and historical nature of trout waters, the fundamental features and characteristics that make up trout water, and the beautiful places where fishermen pursue wild trout. With an illuminating foreword by legendary fly fisherman and author Nick Lyons. Jim Rowinski has spent his entire adult life in and around trout streams. He has devoted most of his career to designing and developing fly rods, reels, wading shoes and other gear for the most prestigious brands in the industry. A Complete Set of Knowledge for Fishing Tailwaters Fly Tales Lessons in Fly Fishing Like the Real Guys by Scott Sadil ~g~g~g~g~g~g~g~g~g~g~g~ "Real Guys," writes Scott Sadil in Fly Tales, his new collection of literary essays, "belong to an inner circle of expert anglers—men and women of rarefied gifts whose skills, knowledge and perhaps fortune of good breeding have positioned them in territory the rest of us can only glimpse or occasionally admire." But are "Real Guys" real? Every few years we have to look at numbers and some fly patterns just don't make the cut. When it's time to re-order, there are minimum quantities for each pattern's color & size combination. So if some selections move too slowly, it costs us more to keep the pattern in inventory than we are making. Tough business choice–so there are some patterns we are forced to discontinue. On the other hand as we "glean" through the LaFontaine patterns the "hot-sellers" rise to the surface. Allowing us to justify adding a new color or size combination to these consistent fish takers. We felt as if the most effective dry fly was always going to be one that you could see. The top wing is yellow and it stands up slightly to present a visible silhouette. And by the way, this is a great fish catcher. If you tie your own, vary the wing color to find out what works the best for your area. The translucent foam lets light radiate around the body segments, perfectly matching the natural insect. A great pattern for flat water in streams, also. It looks nothing like a mayfly to the human eye; and the fact that it works consistently on even the fussiest feeding trout isn't always enough for the skeptics. You will just have to try it out for yourself. (custom colors with Gary’s specific mix of yarn and Antron fibers), What is Antron? Antron reflects light. It is Nylon, but the filaments of regular Nylon are round and the filaments of Antron are 3 or 4 sided. Those flat sides bounce back light rays and make Antron sparkle. Use it for mixing with non-Antron yarn and fur, and for wings. ~~Sparkle Yarn~~ What is the most frustrating problem with Antron yarn? Finding it. It is a miracle material -- just look in any fly tying catalog and you'll see how it has been embraced since it was first used on the LaFontaine Sparkle Pupa in 1972. But there are many different types of Antron, and only one type of yarn was chosen by Gary for fly tying. To ensure the availability of the right type of Antron yarn for our own flies, and for you personal tying, we contracted for production runs of custom colors of this perfect yarn. 1 color per bag (enough for hundreds of flies) Price -- $1.25 (#Y217) (#Y207) (#Y212) (#Y209) (#Y210) (#Y211) All 11 colors - Golden Russet - Dark Gray - Light Gray - Yellow - Pink - White (#Y218) (#Y208) (#Y215) (#Y214) (#Y206) (#Y297) - Price -- $2.75 1 bag (#Y243) Clear Antron `~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~` ~~BT’s Fly Tying Wax~~ This is the finest fly tying wax since the long-gone Overton’s Wonder Wax. But Toronto has run out of welcome and enlists the help of an unexpected benefactor to sneak Berry back into the States on the tour bus of an Indian rock band called Thunderskins, with riotously funny results. Anders Halverson is a journalist with a Ph.D in ecology from Yale University. With support from the National Science Foundation, he wrote this book as a research associate at the University of Colorado’s Center of the American West. Documenting the true-life history of rainbow trout in America, the book chronicles the discovery of rainbow trout, their artificial propagation and distribution, why they are being eradicated in some waters–yet are still the most commonly stocked fish in the US. This is a "thinker" book and delves into politics as well as an excellent lesson in trout biology. I "think" this will surprise you with its depth, Halverson’s writing is user-friendly and enjoyable. It’s a really unique opportunity to concentrate on one of our favorite fish. (#B20651) hardcover; 5-1/2 x 8 inches; 384 pgs. Roger Fogg Much has been written about fishing dry-flies, but far less attention has been paid to wet-flies [which can, very broadly, be defined as artificial flies used under the water]. Wet-Fly Tying and Fishing outlines four categories of wetflies. It describes how to dress them and how to fish them, with specialized tackle on rivers and stillwaters. After Kooser was diagnosed with cancer several years ago, Harrison found that his friend's poetry became overwhelmingly vivid, and they began a correspondence comprised entirely of brief poems, because that was the essence of what they wanted to say to each other. In more than 300 poems, two accomplished poets explore love & friendship and their passionate search for a little wisdom, pausing to celebrate the natural world, aging, everyday things & scenes, and poetry itself. It lasts up to six hundred years. monoMASTER™ Waste Line Holder The monoMaster is an innovative new fishing tool and has been on our wish list for a long time. This handy tool is small, lightweight and collects all the waste monofilament generated from changing flies, tippets and rigs. It hangs from your vest or fits in a pocket, mine is on a zinger. Every time I fish I worry about losing monofilament somewhere where a bird, small animal or fish might become entangled—plus it’s very unsightly wrapped around a bush. On river banks I often pause to decipher the tracks of animals who have passed before me, it familiarizes me with the wildlife in the area and often gives way to wonder. I do not want to leave behind monofilament for nature to break down in 600 years, I just want it safe and tucked away. Now I can do that with confidence. This is a small plastic tube with a brush like rotary insert that collects the monofilament as you twist the top. When it’s full you just open it up, run scissors down the line and toss the monofilament waste. Very simple and effective. This unique invention by Grasshopper Outdoors has received an endorsement from the Federation of Fly Fishers and Trout Unlimited. Jefferson Parker Sixteen of America’s favorite author-anglers spin tales of mystery and fishing in this collection of comic to tragic stories reflecting the authors’ passions for both writing and catching fish. Authors Michael Connelly, Ridley Pearson, John Lescroart, Don Winslow, Melodie Johnson Howe, Victoria Houston, William Tapply and others all share a mysterious affection for things piscatorial when not busy writing best-selling books. This collection of all-original short stories will entertain even the most discriminating mystery reader. Proceeds from this book help support Casting For Recovery and Project Healing Waters. When the call comes in that Mike Wilson, the unlikable owner of the fancy West Branch Lodge, has gone missing, Sheriff Bo Tully is delighted. He’ll have to stay at the lodge and investigate in luxury! But when an avalanche traps him there for the foreseeable future, along with his retired sheriff father, a motley group of vacationers, and a naughty old flame—life starts to get complicated. The missing person's case turns out to be a murder case, Tully discovers the avalanche was no accident of nature, and suddenly everyone starts to look like a suspect—even the murder victim! —–—–—–—–—–—–—–—–—–—–—–— by Joseph Heywood (#B20718) hardcover; 8 x 9 inches; 320 pgs. The discovery of skeletal remains in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula wilderness sheds troubling light on an 80-year-old cold case involving racism, gold and murder. Combine that with a present day eco-terrorist whose guerrilla tactics (including a gruesome trap called a "wolf tree") make Rambo look like a cub scout, and Service’s particular brand of grizzled, sexually tense, and action-packed police work. by Randy Wayne White Many dangers lurk in the deep–the worst of them are human. It should have been an easy, beginner-level dive in a remote lake, when the rim of a cave collapses, trapping two of Doc Ford’s friends. Ford himself manages to escape and quickly surfaces to find help–but that’s when his troubles begin. Two men are waiting for him on the shore—not the kind of men you want to meet at any time. Murderers and ex-cons, who are intent on diving to the bottom of the lake and uncovering the remains of a legendary plane wreck, supposedly loaded with Cuban treasury gold. Ford’s expertise is just what they need. And if he doesn’t want to help? He can die. His friends? They can die, too. In fact, they can die right now . . . As the hours tick away, two mortal struggles unfold simulta neously, one above and one below. Neither outcome is certain, no man is safe . . . and in the deep shadow, only death awaits. Fish it dead drift (weight on the leader) two or three hours before the start of the actual emergence. Or, when trout start slashing the surface sporadically, swing it across a flat. (p. 112 of Trout Flies) ---------- (#T1040) (#T1041) (#T1042) (#T1043) ~ the Clear Wing Spinner, with wings of clear Antron, matches the wings of a spent mayfly spinner. The wings of the natural aren't only clear -- they are pleated and when they're flat on the water they gather air bubbles underneath. So does the Antron. Great pattern for early mornings. Added bonus: you can see this fly from 30 feet away because of the brightness of the wings (making it invaluable for the small imitations of the Trico, for example). (p. 147 of Trout Flies) (#S1062) (#S1522) (#S1722) (#S1723) 3-pack $6.50 ~ tied so that the hook point rides up. On tough, flat water streams this is my caddis dry fly imitation. The Dancing Caddis is earning a splendid reputation on lakes, too. Ever notice how stillwater caddisflies "run" across the surface after emerging. This fly skates beautifully, leaving the same "V" wake on the water. Tip: grease the whole leader. (p. 154 of Trout Flies) ---------Deep Sparkle Pupa 6-pack $12 3-pack $6.50 (#T1014) ~ case-making caddisflies drift free in the current during the day, not during the night like other larval and nymphal forms. We see lots of these in the rivers here in Montana. (p. 45 of Trout Flies) ---------Clear Wing Spinner Ginger -- size 12 14 Russet -- size 12 14 3-pack $6.50 ~ this isn’t your typical beetle imitation. Gary correctly figured out that beetles are not exactly great swimmers. Lots of them are going to get washed just under the surface film. Trout are so accustomed to seeing beetles that they are known as a "hatch breaker" for tougher trout streams. Fished dead drift, this one is designed to float right under the surface film, just like a beetle. (p. 30 of Trout Flies) ---------Cased Caddis Larva (#S1060) (#S1521) Gray -- size 12 14 ~ trout in the Northeastern rivers gorge on the aquatic larvae of these biting flies. This was Gary's #1 nymph for Maine, upstate New York, and Canada during May and June. Use the White Marker (p.11) with this fly. (p. 42 of Trout Flies) ---------Black June Bright Green -- size 12 14 Brown/Yellow -- size 12 14 ~ cast upstream and fish dead drift in the current. That "somersault" motion is a triggering action, a movement that makes a trout reflexively pounce on the fly. The Beadhead Marabou Worm works during the warmer months, when fish metabolism is in high gear. It is also a great streamer pattern for early spring. Try as the bottom fly in a two-nymph rig. (a variation of the standard Marabou Worm on p. 85 of Trout Flies) ---------- 6-pack $12 Deer Hair Wooly Natural Gray -- size 10 12 14 16 - 17 - 6-pack $12 (#S1089) (#S1090) (#S1091) (#S1092) 3-pack $6.50 (#T1089) (#T1090) (#T1091) (#T1092) ~ all-around terrestrial searching dry fly. Try it as a caterpillar imitation in deep, slow runs during the heat of the day. (p. 161 of Trout Flies) i Diving Blue-Winged Olive Egg-Layer size 16 18 6-pack $12 (#S1093) (#S1094) Drowned Trico 3-pack $6.50 Natural Black -- size 18 20 22 (#T1093) (#T1094) ~ the Blue-Winged Olive (Baetis sp.) mayfly lays its eggs underwater. This pattern was devised and tested to mimic that behavior -- this is a sinking fly with a post of clear Antron and an olive body that matches the underwater female perfectly. The amazing thing about this activity is that not only the females but also the males go underwater during the egg-laying. What a bonanza! (LaFontaine Originals, Vol. l, p.9) ---------Diving Caddis Brown/ size 12 Bright Green -- 14 16 18 Brown/Yellow -- size 12 14 16 18 Dark Gray -- size 12 14 16 18 Light Ginger -- size 12 14 16 18 new# Olive -- size 12 14 16 6-pack $12 (#S1096) (#S1097) (#S1098) (#S1099) (#S1102) (#S1103) (#S1104) (#S1105) (#S1107) (#S1108) (#S1109) (#S1110) (#S1112) (#S1113) (#S1114) (#S1115) (#S1116) (#S1117) (#S1118) Gray -- size 12 14 16 Lime -- size 12 14 16 Orange -- size 12 14 16 Pink Lady -- size 12 14 16 Royal -- size 12 14 16 Yellow -- size 12 14 16 6-pack $12 (#S1131) (#S1132) (#S1133) (#S1137) (#S1138) (#S1139) (#S1143) (#S1144) (#S1145) (#S1149) (#S1150) (#S1151) (#S1155) (#S1156) (#S1157) (#S1167) (#S1168) (#S1169) Duck Butt Dun 3-pack $6.50 Slate/Olive -- size 16 (BWO) 18 (#T1096) (#T1097) (#T1098) (#T1099) Pale Gray/ -- size 16 Yellowish-Olive (PMD) 18 (#T1640) (#T1641) (#T1642) 6-pack $12 (#S1216) (#S1217) (#S1213) (#S1214) 3-pack $6.50 (#T1216) (#T1217) (#T1213) (#T1214) ~ this is a Comparadun with a shuck of Cul de Canard fibers. It is a variation designed for the fussiest fish. The Pale Gray/Yellowish Olive is for the western Pale Morning Dun; the Slate/Olive is for the BlueWinged Olive. (p. 168 of Trout Flies) (#S1640) (#S1641) (#S1642) 3-pack $6.50 ~ such a spectacular and obvious need for this imitation. The Drowned Trico imitates all of those spinners that get sucked underwater. You'll catch fish after fish on this pattern. Fish dead drift through areas where trout are working the surface. (LaFontaine Originals, Vol. lll, p.9) ---------- ~ in a recent survey of commercial fly sales only one winged wet fly pattern (the forgotten fly style) ranked in the top 20 -- it was this wonderful, imitative pattern. Gary considered this an indispensable pattern in his fly box. Caddis can be the phantom insect anglers can't see but must trust in by the way the trout are feeding. Extra protection for always having the right stage. (see it tied in LaFontaine Originals, Vol. lV, p.9) ---------the amazing Flex Patterns Flex-Hopper -- (#F1256) ~ a match for big insects when trout are on the hunt. The "flex" imitates the insect in a manner unlike any other hopper patterns. Trout look over imitations and refuse every one except a Flex pattern. Why? They are waiting for a sign of life, a bending of the body. If you are tying this pattern, be creative, vary heads until you find a perfect combination for your home water. Its back floats along the surface and the body hangs down, making this unique shape irresistible to trout. The key when fishing is to watch for bulging rises—it is a good indication that the trout are selectively feeding on midge pupae just beneath the surface. Yet his go-to vise is still the Dan Vise. A true rotary with lever action and table clamp, the jaws shut tight and hold the hook perfectly. When William Halsey Wood landed the first big tarpon ever caught on rod & reel, news quickly spread. This 1885 event changed the face of sports fishing forever and made Florida a mecca for anglers from all parts of the world. Today, the silver king remains one of the most sought-after game fish. Randy Wayne White’s Ultimate Tarpon Book offers everything you could ever want to know about the origins of big game fishing, told in the words of those who were there. Put them together and you have the finest leader for dry fly fishing, An ancient idea. Modern shallow water nymphing and lake fishing. The Furled Leader is specifically designed for transmitting power between the fly line and the tippet. It allows the angler to cast accurately and delicately with slack line presentations in all conditions at varying distances. A Furled Leader is not hollow in the center. They're solid, don't spray water, and turn over the fly beautifully – even in windy conditions. There are several styles of furled leaders—a leader for every fly fishing situation. Casting furled leaders puts a smile on your face and makes your day of fishing far more productive to boot! Leaders come with a metal ring on the tippet end. This precision crafted ring extends the life of your leader so there is no "accidentally" clipping the monofilament while changing tippet. It's very tiny with incredible break strength, yet is light enough to be used on a floating leader. Eliminating loop closing, it is highly unnoticeable, makes for quick, safe tippet changes (available without ring by special order). When it is cast out it fishes at a 45 degree angle from the end of the line. It does the same thing in rivers but is harder to envision because of the effect of moving water. It's a great nymph leader and pulls streamer patterns down those few extra inches that make all the difference. The enjoyment of being able to fish at different levels of the water column and not having to worry about the difficulty of casting a sink tip fly line (which seldom goes where you want it to go in the first place), is a big bonus. A tiny micro-swivel on the tip end (rather than the tiny ring) allows you to strip any streamer, bugger or baitfish pattern all day long without your line, leader or tippet twisting! Also excellent when fishing wet flies, nymphs and emergers just under the surface using the "greased line" technique. Just grease the leader with floatant from the line attachment section towards your flystopping at the point where you want your fly hanging below the surface. You can also grease the red section for higher buoyancy. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA ~ Fluorocarbon Full-Sink Furled Leaders ~ Tremendous for deep water nymphing and streamer techniques. They kick air–resistant, weighted flies over wonderfully, and cut through the currents to carry patterns deeper. He’s one of few on the planet that practice this historic, yet very practical artistry. Harry practices this craft (art) without the aid of a vise and as a result his flies duplicate quite closely the epitome of what they are supposed to look like. He quite literally holds an enormous piece of fly-tying history between his left thumb and index finger every time he ties a fly. The Christmas of 1990 his wife Marlene, gave him the book How To Dress Salmon Flies by Dr. T E Pryce-Tannatt, and said, ‘here, this will keep you busy.’ The book fascinated Harry. In the book were all the instructions on how to tie full dress Atlantic salmon flies the old way. Just to think, that was how fishermen and gillies used to tie them before vises were invented! He went through the book from cover to cover twice and couldn't wait to get started, finding it very possible, practical and rewarding. From that day to this he's never used a vise when tying classic patterns. Tying in hand, now, is strictly for nostalgia. The tradition is what he likes about it, and the tradition is why he does it. He describes only one sport fish landed–a late season Alaskan steelhead too cold to put up a fuss about being hooked. In another piece, he never gets any farther than his own backyard, standing in a midwinter snow bank, casting to house cats. The essays, both funny and touching, reveal him as a writer of stark contradictions: a man who despises winter but loves living in Alaska, who thinks that the Clean Water Act ruined as much as it fixed. At the heart of these writings is one fisherman’s curiosity about how others might think and feel. Of course the real quarry Chiappone is casting about for is empathy. Mortensen shares the essentials of fly casting with singleand double-handed rods in the Scandinavian tradition, beginning with the basic technique of the overhead cast. An explanation of the physics of the proper cast—and how the rod, line, leader, and fly work as a balanced unit. Fishing around the world, he travels from city suburbs to Bhutan, from Icelandic moonscapes to the Seychelles– anywhere, in fact, his fishing rod leads. He battles titanic monsters on a tropical atoll and make-believe sharks on the mushy-peas-and-gravy Wash; he chases inscrutable grayling through back gardens in Provence and phantom sea trout. Along the way he discovers that fishing can take you to the heart of a landscape in a way few other forms of travel can match. A fishing rod will break the ice with locals, guides, farmers, shopkeepers, taxi drivers, and barflies. Fishing introduces Rangeley-Wilson to crabby weather and crabbier locals, moon-phases, riptides, floods, droughts, remarkable tales and of course fantastic slippery beasts. In this collection of fly-fishing stories from acclaimed novelist and outdoor writer William G. Tapply, the natural appeal of fly fishing comes to life. Each story in Every Day Was Special was previously published in Tapply’s back-page column, "Reading the Currents" in American Angler, or in Gray’s Sporting Journal or Field and Stream. From "Dam It to First Light" to "When Trout Get Antsy", these thirty re-readable pieces are unique in their own ways, yet all are classic Tapply. His writings serve as testament to the thrill of fishing, the inimitable energy of casting at daybreak. # by Charles Rangeley-Wilson by William G. This ancient tradition is practiced all over the world. This superbly presented collection of fishing stories will set the reader sailing on the Loch or along the Thames, and tracking down sharks or carp in many exciting waterways. You will find memories, essays, true stories and fishing accounts more or less exaggerated or imagined. Their authors and their editor, Nick Lyons, all share a communicable passion for a great day out fishing—a passion only surpassed by the love of telling the tale with or without the catch to show! With work by more than one hundred of the world’s most eminent authors and fishermen, including: by Hoagy B. Carmichael Whitefish Press is proud to announce a new book coproduced with Hoagy B. Carmichael. Hoagy’s is a name that is synonymous with the bamboo fly rod. His seminal work A Master’s Guide to Building a Bamboo Fly Rod, written with master rodmaker Everett Garrison and first published in 1977 helped create the bamboo Renaissance we still enjoy today. 8 By Carmichael: Portraits of Fly Fishing Innovators Ed and Jim Payne, Chauncy Lively, Dr. George Parker Holden, and Vince Marinaro, along with a Short Collection of Stories is a book of essays and articles, some of which were previously published in the legendary The Angler’s Club of New York Bulletin and The American Fly Fisher. These have always been difficult to locate. Wonderfully written articles detail everything from the author’s relationship with Vince Marinaro and Chauncy Lively to detailed and definitive articles on famed rodmakers George Parker Holden, the author of the influential Idyll of the Split Bamboo, and Ed and Jim Payne. In particular, the 50-page treatment of the Paynes will likely be the definitive work on the subject for the foreseeable future. Based on exhaustive research, it will serve as a fitting tribute to these masters of the split cane fly rod. The book is printed in very limited numbers (1000 copies in the First Edition). LaFontaine Private Label Fly Box It seems every few years we have been forced to search for a new fly box that has the bristle-tac or hook-lock insert that Gary so loved. That material has now been discontinued in wide-width format (don't despair–velcro shoes use narrow width). Thank goodness what we have found is even better than before! The Rose Creek Fly Box Manufactured entirely in the USA – Lifetime warranty Durability– High-impact resistant box with a saltwater grade stainless-steel hinge pin Stealthy dark-green matte color with gold LaFontaine logo imprint Standard Size 6" x 3-1/2" x 1/38" (inquire about other sizes available by special order) Functionality– Eliminating annoyances associated with fly boxes, this unique polymer latch design opens easily with one hand, whether the box is facing up or down. Corner radius in both directions ensures snagless pocket insertion. The special inserts are designed with air pockets to reduce weight and allow it to float. Versatility– Customize the perfect storage system for your own personal fishing style. Choose from four styles of interchangeable inserts. Extra inserts enable quick exchange & organization of specialized flies. Fly Box -- $9.95 (#3004; empty box accommodates two inserts – order desired inserts) Insert Choices Taper Clip Lock -- $6.95 (#3006) Designed exclusively by Rich Femling of Rose Creek Anglers in Minnesota, the Taper Clip Lock features 60 tapered slots which match the taper of the hook point. The retention teeth lock the fly tighter as it's pushed forward, so it won't fall out. But pull the opposite direction and the fly comes out effortlessly. The slots accommodate a wide-range of hook sizes with no stress to the clip. The material contains air pockets, which provides great ventilation (keeps hooks rust-free) and reduces the box weight allowing it to float. A "What majestic trees"! "What powerful rivers"! "What beautiful animals"! He said to himself. As he was walking alongside the river, he heard a rustling in the bushes behind him. Turning to look, he saw a 7-foot grizzly bear charging towards him. He ran as fast as he could up the path. He looked over his shoulder & saw that the bear was closing in on him. He looked over his shoulder again, and the bear was even closer. He tripped and fell on the ground. He rolled over to pick himself up but saw that the bear was right on top of him, reaching for him with his left paw and raising his right paw to strike. At that instant the Atheist cried out, "Oh my God!" Time Stopped. The bear froze. The forest was silent. As a bright light shone upon the man, a voice came out of the sky. "You deny My existence for all these years, teach others I don't exist and even credit creation to cosmic accident." "Do you really expect Me to - 28 - help you out of this predicament? Am I to count you as a believer"? The atheist looked directly into the light, "It would be hypocritical of me to suddenly ask You to treat me as a Christian now, but perhaps You could make the BEAR a Christian"? "Very well," said the voice. The light went out. The sounds of the forest resumed. And the bear dropped his right paw, brought both paws together, bowed his head & spoke: "Lord bless this food, which I am about to receive from thy bounty through Christ our Lord, Amen." - 29 - Fall 2010 ORDER FORM the Book Mailer Exp Date __________ Card Code______ (on back, signature line, last 3 digits) Book Description Total OUT-OF-STOCK ITEMS (if a box is not checked we will backorder at our discretion) Permission to Hold Order up to One Week for out-of-stock item(s) Backorder Only Out-of-Stock Item(s) — notify me of backorder Don't Backorder — send me a refund for backordered item (i.e. Book Rate or Priority) Fill in Method of Shipping Choice Outside the Continental U.S. Call 1-406-443-1888 for shipping charges & time estimates Shipping POLICY & RATES See reverse side of order form for choices and pricing. Line that doesn't scare fish and presents the fly accurately and delicately. The result Gary LaFontaine & Jim Teeny's collaboration in the Gary LaFontaine Professional Series Line. Stealth Rods have a perfect taper made out of the finest graphite scrim. It has a sweet action -- a softer tip allows for close, accurate and delicate presentation while the casting power in the butt lays out 100 feet of line in the flick of a wrist. Stealthy matte black finish, black Fuji double-foot guides, and an anodized reel seat with ebony insert. Flexes beautifully all the way down into the butt. Grip is a Full-Wells (except h-taper which is a double-well) with a front taper—handle has an uplocking reel seat. ~~ A precise high floating, delicate weight-forward taper. It turns over a leader (even a long one) as nice as can be and lays out lightly on the water. What a great combination with a furled leader (p.23). ~~ A very accurate and precise line for dry fly and nymph presentation. ~~ Olive colored with a dull surface, it won't reflect light and scare trout. ~~ A perfect line. We wouldn't offer you anything less (tongue in cheek!) Every rod comes with a spare tip. Call for information on other replacement parts available Price includes the Stealth Rod with extra tip, cloth rod bag, and cordura rod case. -----------------------------------------------------------------------d-taper~ This marvelous Stealth Rod is our standard d-taper modulus design. It flexes beautifully all the way down into the butt and also has amazing casting power. The "d" stands for "delicate". p-taper~ The p-taper 6-weight is as revolutionary in its way as our 4- and 5-weight d-taper series. The "p" stands for "power". This graphite scrim is a technological advance — it makes a rod flex and store more energy in the casting stroke than any other rod. The way it bends, deep into the mid-section, makes it perfect not only for throwing a long line, but for casting weighted nymphs and streamers. h-taper~ The h-taper 3-piece rods cast just as beautifully and maybe even a little farther than the original p-taper. The main difference from the p-taper is in the butt. The h-taper has a powerful fighting butt on a thinner blank. The grip is a double well with an anodized aluminum reel seat. These modifications make a excellent light saltwater rod as well a freshwater rod. 2–weight (#236) 3–weight (#237) 4–weight (#238) 5–weight (#239) 6–weight (#240) Gary LaFontaine Professional Series Fly Line Price -- $52.00 each Still the best there is on fly casting . . .
