a strong freight network based on
22 routes, freight unit shipments
exceeding two million and with over
30 vessels we can offer a very
attractive and sustainable freight
product – now and in the future.
2015 was the year when SECA was introduced for shipping
companies operating in Northern Europe. A lot of threats
were put forward, especially concerns regarding a modal shift,
but in the end short sea shipping has been recognised
as the preferred mode of transport. The low oil price reduced
part of the impact, and this in combination with the close
cooperation with our customers made the fuel change
possible without losing market shares - on the contrary – last
year showed a substantial growth in freight business for
Stena Line.
We are very motivated by the support we have from all of our
customers, and are very grateful for the close partnerships
we have developed over the past years. Thank you!

STENA LINE.
With constant focus on reliability, frequency, pricing and
value-added services, we can meet the freight demand and
also aim at continuously improving our efficiency. To improve
efficiency in the future of our freight customer comes
digitalisation. Giving our customers access to systems
enables a more flexible service and around the clock
opportunity for self-service, whilst at the same time we will
naturally offer the personal service and help where needed.
We constantly try to reduce slack in the system by initiatives
aiming at improvement for ourselves, but more importantly
for our customers. With standage charges in our ports as
well as active engagement in reducing the number of late
cancellations and no-shows, we can together fine-tune costs
as well as improve our service levels and efficiency in the
terminals. By working closely with our customers we attempt
to attract new shipping logistics volumes, especially for the
off-peak departures in order to optimise our expensive assets
in the best possible way.
Our efficient group freight set-up ensures that our network
knowledge is widely spread around our freight regions in
Europe. The substantial part of our business is made locally
however with our one company approach covering the overall
freight business, we continue to build on best practice, system
alignment and concept development for the whole network.
Environmental focus and sustainability are essential parts
of our strategy now that the company moves into our future
business model. The methanol project on Stena Germanica
is exciting and very soon the second engine will be converted.
Growth in short sea shipping proves to be the strength in
ferry transportation and we are committed to delivering safe,
reliable customer driven freight products with a focus on the
environmental footprint. We look forward to continuing to
develop our business with you now and also during the years
to come.

SEA
RAIL
SHIPPING LOGISTICS.
Stena Line’s Shipping Logistics team
is known for its skills and expertise,
working directly with the major
industries mainly within the commodity
areas; Paper, Timber, Steel, Chemistry,
Automotive, Concrete Elements, and
Project cargo.
Peter Kleberg
Head of Shipping Logistics
peter.kleberg@stenaline.com
Stena Line has huge potential within our extensive route
network and modern fleet and this is something we have had
great focus on in recent years and will definitely be
developing in the years to come.
Our Shipping Logistics team work with the cargo owner and
together with the customers we identify their transport needs.
We provide our customers with cost-effective transport solution
offers by rail or trailers, via goods terminals and then shipped
by Stena Line on one of our selected routes. This has a
financial benefit for the customers in the form of selected
sailings where Stena Line has the ability to set a tailor made
sea freight solution. Stena Line’s responsibility implies sea
freight and part of or the entire door to door transport.
In practice we would bring together a project group consisting
of industry experts for each customer with the task of
6

analysing the logistics chain. Once the specific needs are
identified we present the customer with our solution, which
will contribute positively to the customer’s business growth.
This new working method has been very beneficial to both
customers and Stena Line.
Customers have access to Stena Line’s route network - one
of Europe’s most extensive, to tailor-made shipments’
structure, EDI solutions for quicker reporting and 24/7
access to Stena Line’s reservation services. For Stena Line
this has meant a much better network utilization and
improved information exchange or in other words
digitalisation.
ROAD
RAIL SOLUTIONS.
Driver-unaccompanied
intermodal transporting
is becoming more and
more the solution to the
predatory hunt for
competitive road haulage,
constantly threatened by
political environmental
decisions and road tax
implications.
Christer Kjellberg
Group Freight
Rail Manager
christer.kjellberg@stenaline.com
As a shipping company, Stena Line plays a neutral market role
in developing open intermodal solutions for our customers. In
combination with our short sea products we are able to offer
the market desirable hinterland consolidation points where
transport planning, execution and invoicing are taken care of
by Stena Line’s reservation staff, hiding most of the complexity
in rail transportation and coordination. Purchase, book and
be invoiced by Stena Line in simplistic terms.
For several years, Stena Line has been offering Gothenburg–
Verona as a rail and short sea package deal and also
Rostock–Stockholm and Vaasa–Frederikshavn in the same
way. The Poznan–Europoort train is a great example of
cooperation between rail and short sea operations where
Stena Line offers a very efficient corridor between Poznan in
Poland and Harwich or Killingholme in Great Britain.
We continue to work with customers to investigate finding
trade lines where improvements can be achieved, using
intermodal transports combined with Stena Line cross-border
operations. Our intermodal business development team is
present in all Stena Line business areas, comprising the
most experienced staff available. Using a Stena Line
rail-based product is using a completely neutral solution with
the priority of moving cargo on and off the ferries rather than
costing additional revenue by rail. As a non-asset owner,
Stena Line never interacts with shippers and as such never
challenges its customers’ businesses. By providing advanced
solutions to our customers, we believe in broadening our
market proposition and bringing added value to our customers
– something which will nail Stena Line on the transport and
logistics map even in future.
Stena Line strongly believes in win-win concepts with mutual
business success. We are proud to develop rail solutions as
leverage in increasing our utilisation where, in combination
with rail, that contributes to a less polluted environment
together with our customers and their transport buyers.

The Baltic Sea routes cover a wide hinterland and connect
freight markets from the European Union to Central Asia and
Siberia. The core business on the Baltic Sea routes is
shipments of trucks, abnormal sized cargo, overweight
cargo, and different types of machinery and trailers.
Long distance deliveries have resulted in a demand for
multimodal and intermodal services. The multifunctional
terminals in Ventspils and Liepaja have direct connections
to motorways and railways. The terminals’ capability and
wide range of handling services give Stena Line the
opportunity to be part of a chain of multimodal and
intermodal shipments.
The dedicated freight team for the Baltics and CIS
