2016 Sponsorship Kit CELEBRATING THE 60TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE MAI-KAI AND THE 15TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE HUKILAU! BE A PART OF TIKI HISTORY IN THE MAKING! Mahalo for your interest in The Hukilau™! Our event would not be possible without the support of our sponsors and partners. We set our goal high each year to spread Aloha spirit by celebrating Tiki culture through transportive music, Tiki cocktails, Symposiums by Tiki Luminaries and Rum Experts plus stories from the past and the present. Prepare yourself for a weekend of Mid-Century Americana, when escapism was on the corner of any major city in America – at the local Tiki bar. The Tiki resurgence is here to stay and with an event like The Hukilau, you’re instantly transported into a past golden age that many of us never had the chance to experience…until now! WHAT IS THE HUKILAU? What is a Hukilau? A Hukilau [hoo kee lau’] is a method of fishing in ancient villages of Hawaii. Villagers would cast a large net into the sea, herding the fish, then slowly pulled it to shore. The feast that followed was meant to emphasize the spirit of family and community. Our mainland Hukilau is a metaphorical net thrown out to the world, bringing the lovers of “Polynesian Pop” or “Tiki”culture together for our own special celebration. The Hukilau, known as the most authentic Tiki event in the world, began in 2002, and has grown from a small gathering into an international event. Drawing close to 1,200 visitors annually, the 4-day weekend takes place in the beautiful city of Fort Lauderdale, Florida. This year’s host hotel is the historic Hyatt Regency Pier Sixty Six, and the event will culminate at the Mai-Kai (established in 1956), the world’s most perfectly preserved mid-century Tiki palace. 2016 marks two landmark anniversaries: The Mai-Kai celebrates its 60th, and The Hukilau celebrates its 15th. WHO ATTENDS THE HUKILAU? We refer to the attendees of The Hukilau as our Villagers; these Tikiphiles fly in from all over the globe for a tropical weekend where the rum flows like lava and the music never ends! They are collectors and enthusiasts of a past golden age that many of us never had the chance to experience. They are lovers and consumers of Tiki, Retro, Mid Century, Pin-Up and Cocktail Culture. In the crowd, you’ll find artists, filmmakers, bankers, attorneys, housewives and carpenters - you can’t possibly put a label on them. They savor vacations like The Hukilau to escape into a time portal surrounded by palm trees and friends – new and old. The Hukilau is also a top destination for awardwinning bartenders, authors, chefs, craft cocktail fans, artists and those who just love good rum and exotic cuisine. We imbibe on creations like the Mai Tai, Navy Grog, Shark Bite, Rum Barrel, and the dangerous Black Magic. e: er th ki Ti in es am n t es gg bi e th of e You’ll find som OLIVER KONIG Jeff “Beachbum” Berry, Imbibe Magazine’s “25 Most Influential Cocktail Personalities of the Past Century”, THE person responsible for the modern Tiki cocktail revival and owner of the celebrated Tiki restaurant and bar Latitude 29 in New Orleans.
