The Rocky Mountain Senior Games began in 1977 as a one-day athletic event sponsored by four Denver-area senior centers for their members. Sixty adults, age 55+, met at Englewood High School for track, field, basketball, and swimming events. The first games stemmed from the notion that opportunity for senior athletic competition was extremely limited. The originators believed the Games provided a unique opportunity for adults age 55+ to become involved in a variety of activities and stay fit. Eventually the games were moved to Greeley where they attracted participants from cities throughout Colorado. The addition of tennis and bowling tournaments, along with changing the age to 50+, increased participation as well as out-of-state involvement. By participating in the Games, athletes have the opportunity to qualify every other year for competition at the national level. The games are well known throughout Colorado as well as surrounding communities and states. The Games encourage seniors to challenge themselves athletically, socially and intellectually. The future of the Games is very exciting! "RMSG was an experience that is a highlight of 2014 for me." ~ Peggy Hartmann, RMSG athlete “The games are well organized, friendly and utilize good facilities.” ~ George Moore, RMSG athlete 1010 6th Street Greeley, CO 80631 www.rmseniorgames.com Office: 970-350-9433 Fax 970-350-9898 Page 3 Colorado Senior Sports Development Council The Rocky Mountain Senior Games team with the Colorado Senior Sports Development Council (CSSDC), which holds the 501c(3) non-profit status for the Games.
