Page 2 of 6 From The Pastor’s Desk… 1 John 4:19-21 19 We love because he first loved us. 20Those who say, "I love God," and hate their brothers or sisters, are liars; for those who do not love a brother or sister whom they have seen, cannot love God whom they have not seen. 21The commandment we have from him is this: those who love God must love their brothers and sisters also. On a Mission, in Eight Words or Less If you’ve worked in the corporate world, you may have seen an endless stream of mission statements, purpose statements or value statements. They were the rage for years, and many a consultant financed their retirement by helping others write them. When used well, a mission statement guides the actions of the organization. It spells out its overall goal, provides a path, and directs decision-making. A recent article shared a commonality in successful mission statements. Mission statements that truly orient organizations have eight words or less. There are no long paragraphs or flowery phrases. Instead, successful mission statements get to the heart of the matter. Walt Disney Company’s is one: Make people happy. This multibillion dollar company has an incredibly complex organization to live out three simple words and it does it well, one smiling kid in mouse ears at a time. This spring, I have been teaching the 3rd grade religion class at our Day School. Every lesson begins with a song to help bring Scripture alive. With clapping and stomping as punctuation, the boys and girls recently memorized 1 John 4:19, “We love because God first loved us.” If Christians needed an eight words or less mission statement for our lives, this might be it. The facts are clear and the message to the point in this Scripture. God first loved us and a life well-lived is spent loving others. These facts are simple, but like Disney’s giant and complex organization to help make people happy, our lives are complex. Knowing how to love others is not always straightforward and at times it is difficult to want to love at all. How we love certainly changes over time and in the different seasons of our lives. During this season of my life, I am spending far longer changing diapers than I ever imagined. Yet is a gift to love in this way. After all, I have first been loved by God. My prayer for all of us is that we grow in our faith together as we learn what it looks like to love, because God first loved us. God’s blessings, Pastor Hiller P.S. Incidentally, Ashburn’s congregational mission statement to “Follow Christ and Serve Christ’s World” says it well and in less than eight words! Page 3 of 6 Confirmation 2012 On May 6, eight youth confirmed their faith in God in the Rite of Confirmation. As a church we prayed: “Father in heaven, for Jesus’ sake, stir up in our youth the gift of your Holy Spirit; confirm their faith, guide their life, empower their serving, give them patience in suffering, and bring them to everlasting life. Amen.” We pray God’s blessings on them as they mature in their journeys of faith! The following youth confirmed their faith: Narsis Jarel Whigham Lordina Asabea Odei Alicia Morgan Jackson Ashli Renee Hudson Wayne Dennis Collins II Jordan William London Kinyai Javis Broom Xavier Alan Crawford Thank you! Special thankyou’s to Mrs. Nunn and Ms. Sharon Mason for their hard work in preparing the Mother’s Day Spring Tribute Concert. This lovely event showcased the Ashburn Adult Choir, Ashburn’s Day School Choir, and Youth in Unity, a choir led by Luther South alum Sidney Buckner. Blessings and Godspeed On Sunday, May 13, Ashburn bid adieu to Student Pastors Sara Suginaka and Yvette Newberry White. This year, Sara led the 4th grade religion class at our day school, preached, and led adult Bible study. Yvette, along with Steve Bendas, led the Lenten series on “Lutheran Questions, Lutheran Answers,” preached and led adult Bible study. We were enlivened by their presence, kindness and love. We wish them God’s blessings and godspeed in their future ministries! Our sending for Student Pastor Miles Hopgood will take place during worship on Sunday, June 3, followed by a festive coffee hour. Please be a part of blessing Miles and wishing him godspeed! LSTC Rare Books Field Trip On Sunday, June 3, Ashburn people are invited to head to Hyde Park after worship for a guided tour of The Lutheran Seminary in Chicago’s Rare Book Collection. Prof. Ralph Klein will fascinate us with insight into the collection’s books and their relevance for our lives and theology. Do not miss this interesting and thought-provoking opportunity. More information is available at http://collections.lstc.edu/ Principal Search The Principal Search Team is currently interviewing candidates for the principal position at Ashburn Lutheran School. Please keep this process and our day school ministry in your prayers. Annual Meeting Ashburn’s Annual Meeting will take place after worship on Sunday, June 24. Please be in attendance as we recount Ashburn’s ministries this past year, elect new leaders for our various ministries, and plan for the future.
