j GATOR TALES News & Views of Blue Heron Pines Golf Course Community 29200 Jones Loop Rd, Punta Gorda, Florida Volume 22 Issue 10 Blueheronpineshoa.net October 2013 FROM THE PRESIDENT As we move into the fall season we are beginning to see many of our friends and neighbors returning from the north. Activities that were suspended for the summer will start up again in October or November. The Recurring Activities list in the Gator Tales will list the start-up dates when they become available. As of this printing, some dates have not been set yet. the Negotiations and Mediation Committee will be able to work with him on the issues of concern to our community. By the time you have received this issue of Gator Tales you may have received the 90-day notice of any possible rent increases. The Board and the N&M Committee are ready to deal with any concerns that may develop from these notices. Marcy and I have set up a local land line for phone calls. The number is 941-347-8649. You may use this new number or continue to contact us on our cell phone numbers listed in the directory. It is my hope that all new residents in our community will join us at the next HOA Meeting on October 1 and that current members will continue to support our association. If you have not been a member in the past, please consider joining us. I feel that a strong homeowners association is our best chance for the quality community that we all want. Many thanks to Colin Phelps and all the helpers that made the successful Labor Day event happen and to Community General Manager Valerie Dixon and American Land Lease for the monetary donation to our picnic. A few reminders for our residents: ~We have new stop signs on Christine Lane so please observe them. ~I am working with the Community Park Manager concerning the feral cat issue, and one thing that will help the situation is to stop feeding the cats. This may be hard for some to do, but it is an important step in dealing with the situation. ~All residents have the responsibility to be sure that the lamp post in front of your house is on. In most cases it just requires replacing the light bulb but in some you may have to replace the sensor. ~And last, everyone needs to make sure that the landscaping around your home is maintained. Thank you, Jack Sternisha, HOA President Next HOA Meeting Tuesday, October 1st 7 p.m. I had the opportunity to meet our new Regional Manager Ron Archille. I had a positive first impression, and it is my hope that your Board and 1 YOUR HOMEOWNER’S ASSOCIATION (HOA) NEEDS YOUR SUPPORT Gator Tales Staff Editor: Mary Ellen Marvin #394 941-268-4239 Email: memarvinpgfl@gmail.com For $20 per year per household you can influence the future direction of our community. Through scorching sun and soaking rain (but no freezing snow??), these brave souls carry out their duties faithfully – thank you all – your services are very much appreciated! from Editor Mary Ellen Marvin THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 28 THANKSGIVING DINNER 2 p.m., Clubhouse, $5 per person Turkey, Stuffing & Gravy & drinks provided Pot Luck for Sides and Dessert Tickets sales at Oct. 1 HOA Meeting and at mail box area on Tuesdays & Thursdays starting Oct. 1 or see Ellie Welcome, Lot #19 AND ANOTHER BIG THANK YOU to Yvonne Campbell for her 7-8 years of taking care of the Ceramics Classes and Activities. Besides the Wednesday sessions, she spent many other hours ordering and picking up the items used in the group’s projects and helping members with their projects at other times. Labor Day dinner was prepared by Don Malott with help from Bob Schieb and Jill Malott. The event was a big success with 76 tickets sold. People started arriving at 3:15 p.m. anticipating a good meal and refreshments, and they were not disappointed. The menu included roast pork, baked potato, peas, rolls, gravy, and applesauce along with beer, wine, soda, and water, with ice cream for dessert. Only great comments were heard after dinner as diners departed with their stomachs full! Yvonne feels that it is time to take a break from those duties. However, she is willing to continue to operate the kiln when there are projects to be fired. We need one (or more) volunteers to take over the instruction of and assistance to the residents who want to work on ceramics projects. The group meets on Wednesdays in the Arts & Crafts Room of the Clubhouse at 11 a.m. Call Yvonne at 941-868-7540 or 941-637-6878 if you would be willing to volunteer. We had a good crew of helpers: Doug Howe, Rita Ledyard, Nancy Simonis, Terri Stark, Marci Sternisha, Terry Alves, Suzanne Krause, and Pat Phelps. Also there were several people who stayed afterwards to clean up. Our thanks go out to all those residents; this event would not happen without residents volunteering their time. Thanks to American Land Lease for their contribution of $50 to the cost of the food. THE LAST THANK YOU is to Liz Black for her many years of service on the Gator Tales staff. Liz was the reporter for the Ladies 18-Hole League and she also coordinated getting reports on other BHP sports to the Editor. Liz always met her deadlines, even when she was up north for the summer months. Liz has decided to resign after many years of faithful reporting. We will miss you, Liz! The 50/50 drawing winnings totaled $81, and 20 $1 lottery tickets were won by attendees. Thanks to Jim & Jan Crail for their donation of a ticket for the Charlotte Harbor boat ride that was won by a lucky attendee. Keep an eye on the Bulletin Board in the Clubhouse and the monthly Gator Tales newsletter for all upcoming events. Come and support these events and if you can, get involved not only to help but to give us your input on ideas for future events. Colin Phelps Of course, now we need one (or more) volunteers to take over Liz’s Gator Tales duties. 4 Contact Gator Tales Editor Mary Ellen Marvin at memarvinpgfl@gmail.com or 941-268-4239 if you would be willing to help with the sports reporting. There are still some people that seem to think that it is OK to leave the mess behind. If you see anyone doing this please remind them that this is not allowed in Blue Heron Pines. Be careful when you drive or walk around the streets of Blue Heron Pines. There are a number of areas of the roads that are in need of repair, and we do not want anyone to have an accident. According to American Land Lease these areas are to be repaired in the near future. Until then, please be careful. The speed limit in Blue Heron Pines is 15 mph whether driving a car, golf cart, or bicycle. This is very important for safety reasons. The final item is that when using the clubhouse, please leave it the way you found it, such as returning tables, chairs, and table decorations to their proper locations. Ohio is the 34th largest by area, the 7th most populous, and the 10th most densely populated of the 50 United States. The state’s capital and largest city is Columbus. 1783, Britain ceded all claims to Ohio. On February 19, 1803, US President Thomas Jefferson signed an act of Congress that approved Ohio’s boundaries and Constitution. However, Congress had never passed a resolution formally admitting Ohio as the 17th state. The oversight was discovered in 1953, and Ohio Congressman George Bender introduced a bill in Congress to admit Ohio to the Union retroactive to March 1, 1803. President Eisenhower signed a congressional joint resolution that officially declared March 1, 1803 as the date of Ohio’s admittance into the Union. from Pat Phelps The name Ohio originated from the Iroquois word ohi-yo’, meaning Great River or large creek. The state, originally partitioned from the Northwest Territory, was admitted to the Union as the 17th state on March 1, 1803. Although there are conflicting narratives regarding the origin of the nickname, Ohio is historically known as the Buckeye State which relates to the Ohio buckeye tree, and Ohioans are also known as Buckeyes. Ohio’s geographic location has proven to be an asset for economic growth and expansion. Because Ohio links the Northeast to the Midwest, much cargo and business traffic passes through its borders. Ohio has the nation’s 10th largest highway network and is within a one-day drive of 50 % of North America’s population and 70 % of North America’s manufacturing capacity. To the north, Lake Erie gives Ohio 312 miles of coastline. Ohio’s southern border is defined by the Ohio River, and much of the northern border is defined by Lake Erie. Ohio’s neighbors are Pennsylvania to the east, Michigan to the northwest, Ontario Canada, to the north, Indiana to the west, Kentucky on the south, and West Virginia on the southeast. Ohio’s borders were defined by metes and bounds in the Enabling Act of 1802. American Indians in the Ohio Valley were greatly affected by the aggressive tactics of the Iroquois Confederation. After the so-called Beaver Wars in the mid-17th century, the Iroquois claimed much of the Ohio country as hunting and beavertrapping ground. During the 18th century, the French set-up trading posts to control the fur trade. In 1754 France and Great Britain fought a war known as the French and Indian War. As a result of the Treaty of Paris, the French ceded control of Ohio to Great Britain. Pontiac’s Rebellion in the 1760s posed a challenge to British military control. In the Treaty of Paris in 8 THE CASE OF THE MISSING PINEAPPLES – WHEN THE BEACH WAS OUR PLAYGROUND by Colin Phelps Organizing our summer vacation this year seemed stressful and complicated. Arranging the correct flight with the correct connection, the hotel and then what we needed to take with us seemed to take so much planning. A Collaboration by Kathryn Oetting and Brenda Hubertus Many people have found a fun project attempting to grow pineapples from pineapple crowns by removing the tops and planting them outside. It can take anywhere from 18 to 24 months to get a sizeable pineapple worth picking. There is the waiting, the anticipation, and finally the day arrives when you can harvest your crop, bringing such satisfaction. This experience allowed me to secretly reminisce about my own family vacation as a child back in England. We use to travel to the shore by train, with no DVD player or game machine to keep us amused, my mum had to be creative to keep us content on the trip. I-Spy, Scrabble, and other simple games were just a few of her trusted favorites, and good old sing-song could pass an hour or so. Brenda had a fine one ready to be picked. However, she went out for a short time and when she returned, alas - the pineapple was gone! It was such a disappointment. Who would ever consider such a wrongful act? There were many visitors here at the time, and it was never considered that any one of our fine, upstanding citizens at BHP would do such a thing. It must have been teen-agers or other visitors. Luggage was limited but it was always essential to bring a sweater; there was no guaranteed sunshine in England even in August. Many days were spent battling with the wind sand-blasting across our faces like needles; we were never without a plastic raincoat tucked in our bag. The rain could be unforgiving, often waiting until we had set up camp on the beach, before dropping with ferocity on all of us, who stoically huddled together beneath umbrellas and waited for it to stop. Time passed - several weeks as a matter of fact and it was revealed that other neighbors at BHP also had their pineapples stolen. We know that there are several animals, especially the raccoons, with remarkable agility and dexterity that could have performed this act. However, no one has observed a raccoon going around with a clipboard checking out yards and the growing pineapples. Could it be that there is another kind of animal living here, maybe a sly old fox, with an insatiable taste for pineapple? Sitting on the beach all those years ago in my swimsuit, whatever the temperature, eating sandfilled sandwiches and enjoying an ice cream are still some of my happiest memories. Gentle pursuits were the order of the day. Jumping over waves and running down the sand dunes offered all the excitement we needed. So everyone - Watch your pineapples!!!!! The beach and sea were there to be discovered and explored, and searching for shells was the favorite game of all the children on the beach. This gave us all a chance to meet new friends, share ideas and excite our imaginations. Our engineering skills were put to the test as elaborate sandcastles were erected and then exquisitely decorated with shells and seaweed. Exercise classes were not necessary as running up and 9 down the beach and refilling buckets from the sea only to watch the water seep gently through the sand of the moat gave us enough exercise to work off any ice creams we ate. These activities expanded our knowledge and appreciation of the world around us. GATOR TALES SPORTS Finally, we would retire to our little rented room in a “Bed & Breakfast” and when tired from a hard day’s play it was wonderful to climb into bed after a bath and dream about better ways to construct sandcastles or catch crabs! PRO SHOP MANAGER My name is Matthew(Matt) Licata. I’m 27 years old and was born and raised on Long Island, New York. I moved to Port Charlotte three years ago to be closer to family and love it here. I received my Associate of Arts Degree from Suffolk County Community College. I am single and have no children but would like to have a family in the future. I started in golf several years ago at Six Lakes, a private community similar to BHP, where I worked for about two years before moving on to Heron Creek in Northport, a 27-hole championship course with over 700 members. I have also worked part time at Herons Glen and Port Charlotte Country Clubs. I came to Blue Heron Pines this year in April. I will be working hard for you, the members, to increase customer service and to provide relevant and exciting merchandise in the Pro Shop. Contact me with any questions, concerns or comments any time by e-mail: Matthew.Licata@amercianlandlease.com. I am currently a level one PGA registered apprentice, and am working hard to complete my training and achieve Class A certification. I am very excited to be here at Blue Heron Pines and always appreciate hearing your ideas. I hope to make everyone’s golfing experience as enjoyable as possible. Stop by and see us in the Pro Shop! Skills learned from such vacations are immeasurable, and the memories made from such simple pleasures will live with me forever. The vacations were always on a small budget, and many activities cost nothing. Although there are amazing sights to see all over the world, we need reminding of the beauty of our home shores, and the enjoyment that can be gained from them. With household budgets shrinking in these difficult economic times, I am sure our beautiful coastline can offer a real alternative to the expensive vacations to the far-flung locations so revered today. RAINY SEASON WRECKS HAVOC by Matt Licata Hello from the Pro Shop. We have had our rainiest season here in southwest Florida since 1932, which has caused some headaches here at Blue Heron Pines. Our grounds crew is working tirelessly to get the course in good shape. Unfortunately the rain has put a damper on some 10 of the projects and drawn attention in different directions. There are several discussions taking place about installing cart paths in more areas on the course to prevent so many closures. We are examining the best and most cost effective materials to use and methods to install them. BOWLING LEAGUE TO START NOVEMBER 6 by Jack Sternisha The Blue Heron Pines Bowling League will start up on Wednesday, November 6, for an 18-week season. The league will be bowling at the All Star Lanes in North Fort Myers every Wednesday starting at around 3 p.m. There is a sign-up sheet in the clubhouse or you can contact Bowling League President Rick Schram to sign up. His e-mail is schram4021@gmail.com and his phone number is 941-505-0646. It is hoped that all past members of the league will return and that many new members join us. Our kitchen has been booming. We have been cooking up new hot specials, meatballs and pulled pork sandwiches. We are working hard to bring you a varied menu that would be efficient but also enjoyable. We hope the Pro Shop can become a viable option for lunch any day of the week. In an attempt to provide you with more varied and appropriate options in the Pro Shop, we are in the process of acquiring a new clothing vendor and have looked into other options available from our current vendors. The merchandise should be ready and well stocked by the time the rapidly approaching “busy” season finally arrives. GOV. SCOTT & FWC ADD FOUR MORE LICENSE-FREE FISHING DAYS TO THE CALENDAR Florida currently offers the public four licensefree fishing days per year, where the requirement to have a recreational fishing license is waived for residents and visitors. Saltwater license-free fishing days in 2013 were on June 1 and Sept. 1 and freshwater’s were April 6 and June 8. During its Sept. 5 meeting, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) added four more license-free fishing days to the calendar, and the Florida Legislature approved this increase earlier this year. I would like to encourage anyone with any ideas, concerns, or comments of any nature to come and discuss them whenever the Pro Shop is open. We are always looking for improved ways of doing things and are open to your suggestions on how to better serve you. The golf course is part of your community, and we want to work together with you to make it the best that it can be. TUESDAY 9-HOLE LADIES LEAGUE THE FUN-TIME GIRLS The additional saltwater license-free fishing days will be Oct. 12 and Nov. 30 and additional freshwater license-free days will be Nov. 29 and Dec. 28. By Kay Oetting It’s been a great summer with a number of players each Tuesday. Now that the summer season is over we’ll be playing again on a less casual basis, as we did last year, with the point system. The Commission also set dates for 2014 and beyond. All eight days will now fall on the same day of the week from year to year, allowing potential anglers to plan fishing trips in advance. For 2014 and beyond, the following dates will be license-free fishing days: Saltwater First Saturday and Sunday in June First Saturday in September Saturday following Thanksgiving Freshwater First Saturday and Sunday in April Second Saturday and Sunday in June The League end-of-season luncheon was held on September 24 and a fun time was had by all. 11 To make these events accessible to as many people as possible, the FWC planned these dates around holiday weekends and national events and National Fishing and Boating Week. Highlighted by significant national media coverage and public events, National Fishing and Boating Week promotes boating and fishing across the country as fun and healthy outdoor activities.
