I-25 In-State Rivalry Continues Saturday
Saturday’s game between New Mexico State (0-4) and the University of New Mexico (0-5) is the 101st
meeting between the I-25 rivals. The game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. (MT) start at Aggie Memorial Stadium in
Las Cruces, N.M. The game will also be televised on Aggie Vision.
You can listen to all the action with the ‘Voice of the Aggies’ Jack Nixon and color analyst Jason Scott beginning at 5 p.m. on KRGT 104 FM. Also catch the action in Spanish with Martin Cortez and Bob Sherman on Vista
98.7 FM. Cuyler Frank will also broadcast the game in Navajo from Aggie Memorial Stadium on KNDN 960 AM
(Farmington) and KGAK 1330 AM (Gallup).
The Lobos have a 66-29-5 lead in the series that began in 1894. The 101 games make the NM State-UNM
series the 35th-longest in the NCAA record book.
New Mexico has won six of the last seven meetings over NM State, but the Aggies snapped the Lobos’ sixgame winning streak in the series in 2009, winning for the first time in Albuquerque, since 1999. It was also
the first win for NM State in the series since 2002.
NMSU Aggies Are Tough Enough to Wear Pink
For the fourth-year in a row, the New Mexico State football team will join together with the University, local
businesses and the Las Cruces community to raise money for breast cancer research. This year, co-chairs Magellia Boston (wife of Athletics Director Dr. McKinley Boston), Laura Conniff (NM State Regent), Mary Henson
(wife of Hall of Fame Basketball Coach Lou Henson) and Pat Sisbarro (wife of car dealer Lou Sisbarro) enter
their fourth year with the initiative.
In a unique opportunity in 2007, the New Mexico State Athletics Department agreed to designate the
football game on September 29 against Arkansas-Pine Bluff, as a breast cancer awareness initiative and fundraiser. Former NM State coach Hal Mumme brought together four honorary chairwomen for this event, all
with strong ties to New Mexico State University and all cancer survivors.
In 2008 and 2009, TETWP’s combined fundraising efforts with Cowboys for Cancer Research made
“NMSU Aggies are Tough Enough to Wear Pink” the
No. 1 TETWP event in the world. Last season over
NM State versus New Mexico
$476,000 was raised.

ning streak in the series in 2009, winning for the first time in Albuquerque, since 1999. It was also the first win
for NM State in the series since 2002.
The last meeting in Las Cruces was a battle that saw the Lobos defeat NM State, 35-24, as the Aggies racked up
430 yards of total offense to the Lobos’ 352.
Before NM State’s win in 2009, the last time the Aggies were victorious over the Lobos in the series was in
Las Cruces in 2002. In front of a crowd of 28,587, the ninth-largest in Aggie Memorial Stadium history, New
Mexico State defeated New Mexico, 24-13. The Aggies got on the board first as kicker Dario Aguiniga booted a
52-yard field goal with 8:04 left in the first quarter. New Mexico answered in the second quarter with a 1-yard
touchdown run by Casey Kelly. The Aggies answered with an Aguiniga 19-yard field goal, but trailed at half, 6-7.
In the third quarter, quarterback Paul Dombrowski took matters into his own hands, or legs to be exact.
Dombrowski, who rushed for a game-high 136 yards on 18 carries, scored the only points of the quarter. Dombrowski capped a five-play, 47-yard scoring drive, taking the ball in himself from the 1-yard line. He then cashed
in on the two-point conversion to put the Aggies up, 14-7. Ten seconds into the fourth quarter, New Mexico State,
extended its lead with a 42-yard field goal by Aguiniga.
The Lobos countered with a 1-yard touchdown plunge by back DonTrell Moore, but missed the extra point
and still trailed, 17-13. The Aggies sealed the deal when Eric Higgins capped a six-play, 80-yard drive, with an
8-yard dash to the end zone.
History of NM State vs. New Mexico Traveling Trophies
NM State and UNM first met, on Jan. 1, 1894 - eight years before the first Rose Bowl - in what may have been
the first college football game ever played on New Year’s Day. The two teams played six games against each other
before New Mexico became a state in 1912.
During the history of the series a travelling trophy was at stake including the Maloof Trophy (1993-2001)
and the Rio Grande Rivalry Trophy (2007-2008). Below is a small history on each.
The Rio Grande Rivalry Trophy
The New Mexico State Athletics Department in a joint effort with the University of New Mexico Athletics
Department announced in July of 2007 that NM State and UNM would start a traveling rivalry trophy between
the two schools. The NM State versus UNM rivalry series, called the Rio Grande Rivalry, premiered in the 200708 athletic calendar year and highlighted one of the most competitive rivalries in the nation. The Lobos won the
trophy in the 2007-08 and 2008-09 academic years before it was discontinued.
The competition of the rivalry series was based upon a point system devised to reward victories from athletic competition between the two schools. There was a possible 25.5 points to be earned from victories in various sports. If the schools face each

The Maloof Trophy
Though the in-State rivalry dates
back to 1894, the New Mexico State
- New Mexico football series had
awarded a traveling trophy to the
winning team. The Maloof Trophy,
presented by First Security Bank
to the winner of “The Big Game,”
originated in 1993. The trophy was
discontinued in 2001.

The Last Time in Las Cruces
Senior running back Paul Baker rushed for 146 yards to lead the University of New Mexico past New Mexico
State University 35-24.
The win extended UNM’s winning streak against the Aggies to six consecutive games dating back to 2002.
An 18-yard touchdown by Jermaine McQueen and a failed 2-point conversion pulled the Lobos to two points of
the Aggies at 22-24.
Baker closed the gap with a 3-yard rushing touchdown six minutes later with 4:14 left in the game.
The Lobos attempted and missed their second 2-point conversion play of the night, but a 44-yard touchdown
by James Wright extended the score to 35-24 two minutes later.
The Aggies led the majority of the game after NM State quarterback Chase Holbrook connected with A.J. Harris
on the first snap of the game, and Harris sprinted down the sideline for an 84-yard touchdown.
Holbrook finished the night with 382 yards passing and went 24-for-38.
Redshirt freshman Brad Gruner started in the shotgun for UNM in place of injured quarterback Donovan Porterie. Gruner completed 7of 16 attempts for 55 yards.
Last Year against the Lobos
As the clock was winding down and the stadium was roaring, the game came down to its last drive, and in the
end New Mexico State claimed its first Rio Grande Rivalry victory against the University of New Mexico in a
thrilling 20-17 victory.
It is the first win against the Lobos for the Aggies since 2002 and its first win in Albuquerque since 1999. Head
coach DeWayne Walker earned his first Division I victory and his first win against UNM.

UNM to pad the lead to 17-13 with 10 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
With 11:32 remaining in the fourth quarter, Fleming took over at quarterback and was sacked on his first play. The Aggies quickly turned the ball over on downs,
but a big stop by Ross Conner with eight minutes remaining in the game gave the Aggies one last opportunity.
Fleming started the game-winning drive on NM State’s own 41-yard line with 7:39 remaining in the fourth quarter. On third and seven, Seth Smith carried the ball
14 yards to the Lobos’ 23-yard line. Three plays later, Anderson made the game, winning, 4-yard diving catch to put the Aggies ahead 20-17.
In the final drive of the game, the Lobos drove the ball 50 yards downfield in 37 seconds to set up one last field goal attempt to tie the game. Aho missed the 47-yard
attempt as the clock expired, giving the Aggies the victory.
The Lineman Chart
The offensive line is a position in the game of football that has no stats or glory but could possibly be one of the most important positions on the field. Let’s take a
look at the grade sheet for the NM State offensive line in week four of the season.
Aundre McGaskey leads the team with 25 knockdowns, while the offensive line has given up just two sacks in four games, which is second in the WAC.

Junior wide receiver/kick returner Taveon Rogers is averaging 26.8 yards per kick return this season on 18
returns for the Aggies. He currently ranks third in the WAC and 35th in the nation. His long for the year is 54
yards versus Kansas.
Rogers recorded six kickoff returns against Kansas, totaling 219 yards, a new school record for the Aggies.
His six returns tied a school record for the most kickoff returns in a game. Rogers had four returns of 40-plus
yards, including a career-long of 54 yards. His 219 yards broke Tony Lukins’ record from 2001 (189 yards).
He would tie his own record against No. 3 Boise State with six kickoff returns for 136 yards. On the season,
Rogers has 18 returns for 482 yards. He is now 10th all-time in kick return yardage in a season and needs just
two more returns to break into the top-10 for returns in a season.
The Aggies primary kick returner has averaged at least 20 yards a return for 13 consecutive.
Coleman Makes a Statement
In his fourth career start, Donyae Coleman again produced another solid game with eight tackles against No.
3 Boise State. He recorded the second-most tackles in a game this season with 12 tackles against Kansas; one
shy of his career-high. He now has two games with double digit tackles this season. He also recorded a tackle for
a loss against the Jayhawks. On the season, Coleman now leads the Aggies with 31 tackles.
Coleman recorded a career-high 13 tackles against San Diego State. He currently ranks third in the WAC in
tackles per game with 9.8, while also ranking 27th in the nation.
Allen a Dual Threat
Wide receiver Marcus Allen started his senior season off on the right foot against San Diego State. Allen
caught four passes for 114 yards, a career high. He also tallied a career-long touchdown catch of 58 yards in the
third quarter of the game.
He followed that performance with five catches for 65 yards against UTEP and again led the Aggies versus
Kansas, catching five passes for 89 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for 45 yards on four carries. He added
three more catches for 46 yards against No. 3 Boise State.
On the season, Allen has caught 16 passes for 314 yards and two touchdowns.
Currently, Allen ranks fifth in the WAC in reception yards per game and 41st in the nation. He also ranks 10th
in the WAC in receptions per game (4.00). Last season, Allen had just five catches for 85 yards after the Aggies’
first four games of the year.
For his career, Allen has now caught 42 passes for 622 yards and four touchdowns, averaging 14.8 yards per
catch and 41.5 yards per game.
Run Game a Team Effort in 2010
This season the Aggies have rushed for 447 yards, as nine players have rushing attempts. Seth Smith leads
the Aggies with 134 yards rushing, followed by Kenny Turner with 98 yards and quarterback Matt Christian
with 77 yards on the ground.
NM State has rushed for three touchdowns this season as well; two by Smith and one by Turner.

Head Coach DeWayne Walker
When DeWayne Walker took over the football
program at New Mexico State, Dec. 31, 2008, he preached
a change in culture, hard work, a new commitment and
discipline, all of which came true in his first year on the
job. Now entering his second year with the Aggies, Walker looks to continue to build on those values.
Despite a 3-10 overall record and a 1-7 mark in
WAC play in 2009, Walker and the Aggies football team
made significant strides to become a team that the players, coaches, the university and the Las Cruces community can be proud to support.
Walker led the Aggies as they finished the year
in the top six in the conference in pass defense, total defense and scoring defense. NM State was ranked 36th in the nation in pass defense
and 54th in pass defense efficiency. The Aggies also beat in-state rival New Mexico
in Albuquerque for the first time since the 1999 season.
Defensive back Davon House was named a first team All-WAC selection, after
leading the league in passes defended and interceptions. House also broke the
school record for most interception return yards for a career. On the season, House
returned an interception and a fumble for a touchdown.
Coming into the season, one of Walker’s top priorities on offense was the running
game. NM State averaged 141.5 yards a game on the ground, the most by an Aggie
team since the 2003 season (211.2 ypg). Running back Seth Smith was the highlight
of the Aggies’ offense in 2009. Smith became just the third individual since 1969
(Denvis Manns and Chris Barnes) to rush for 1,000 yards in a season and recorded
the first 1,000-yard season since 2000.
Prior to NM State, Walker spent three seasons as UCLA’s defensive coordinator.
In addition, he served as UCLA’s interim head coach for the 2007 Pioneer Las Vegas
Bowl game. Walker, who excelled at coaching defenses for three different organizations in the National Football League prior to UCLA, has established himself as one
of the top defensive minds in the collegiate game.
In 2008, Walker guided the Bruin defense to a 48th ranking in the nation in total
defense, allowing 337 yards a game. UCLA’s passing defense was atop the nation’s
leaders ranking 11th overall and second in the Pac-10, holding its opponents to just
167.6 yards per game through the air.
In 2007, the Bruin defense once again found itself listed among the national leaders in several categories. UCLA ranked 14th in rushing defense (109.2 yards per
game), 29th in total defense (343.23 yards), 29th in scoring defense (22.3 points)
and 32nd in pass efficiency defense (115.26). The Bruins also ranked second nationally in tackles for loss per game (8.77), third in third-down conversion defense
(29.1%), tied for 15th in sacks per game average (3.0) and tied for 17th in fumbles
caused (14). Defensive backs Trey Brown (tied for first, 1.77/pg) and Alterraun
Verner (tied for 11th, 1.46/pg) ranked among the nation’s best in the passes defensed category, while defensive end Bruce Davis ranked tied for ninth in the nation
in sacks per game (.92).
In 2006, the Bruins were among the national leaders in rushing defense (tied for
ninth in the NCAA and tied for first in the Pac-10 with 91.08 yards per game) and
total defense (33rd nationally at 304.83) and allowed almost half as many touchdowns (27) as the previous year (48). UCLA allowed 91.1 yards per game, 2.83
yards per rush and just nine touchdowns on the ground, the first time since 1985
that the Bruins had allowed fewer yards per game on the ground. The Bruin defense
also ranked fifth nationally in third-down conversion defense (28.4%, 50 of 176).
Walker joined the Bruins from the Washington Redskins, where he had coached the
secondary, specifically the cornerbacks, the previous two seasons (2004-05) under
head coach Joe Gibbs and highly-respected defensive coordinator Gregg Williams. In
2005, the Washington Redskins won 10 of 16 regular-season games, including their
final five straight, to earn a wild-card berth in the playoffs. Washington defeated
Tampa Bay in Florida, before dropping a 20-10 decision to the NFC champion Seattle Seahawks on the road.
The Washington Redskins ranked No. 1 among the NFL’s 32 teams in lowest opponent passing percentage (54.4%). In addition, they also ranked second (tied) in
fewest touchdown passes allowed (15), 10th in pass defense (192.6 yards) and 14th
(tied) in interceptions (16). Walker played a key role in the development of rookie
cornerback Carlos Rogers and the continued fine play of Shawn Springs. In 2004,
his first year in Washington, Springs became the first cornerback in NFL history
