Our motto is:
“Friends for Fun, Safety and Knowledge”
Deb and I hope that everyone had an enjoyable and safe Easter Holiday with family and friends. I know that
our grandchildren had a great time with their Easter egg hunt and all the other fun activities here at the house.
It’s always good to have your children and grandchildren home for the holidays!
.
On the 20th March 2016, we had our gathering at Mom’s Diner. We had 28 members attend. What a great
turn out - thank you to everyone for coming out. Those of you who could not make it, we missed you. Maybe
we will see you at the next outing. Each and every one of you is important to this Chapter and Deb and I
always look forward to seeing you all.
“Wing World of Sports”, our PA District Rally, May 19-20-21. is being held in State College this year. If you
are planning on attending please make your hotel reservation soon.
At the next gathering we will have the PA District Raffle Tickets for sale. If you did not get them at the last
gathering, please see Carol Tanner. She would love to give you a few to sell. By selling the tickets it helps in
keeping the costs down for District events plus we get a percentage of what we sell.
Just a reminder our next monthly gathering will be held at the Democratic Club 230 East Street
Williamsport, Pa. Breakfast at 8 am and the gathering to follow at 9 am. We have a ride scheduled for after
the gathering. We will be going to the 10th Annual Crossroads Community Church Blessing of the Bikes.
(weather permitting)
Just as your ACD Larry Michael mentioned it’s always a good idea to check each month’s news letter or go
to the web site to check the schedule because changes do happen.
Just a few more things to remember:
1. 17th April Sunday we have the Adopt a Highway 11am AND the Ice Cream Social at 2pm
2. 1st May the Hobo Stew is schedule. Please, we need everyone’s help; I will have signup sheets at our
next gathering or just give me a call if you can’t make the gathering. We also need to start working on
getting door prizes. Anything you can do will help make this year’s hobo stew a successful one.
3. If anyone has aluminum cans call Dale Chapman or me for pick up or delivery. Remember now that
weather is nice we will most likely be on our bikes at the gatherings.
4. 23rd April Bus trip to 9/11 Memorial and Museum has been cancelled (Refunds will be made to
those who paid to go)
5. Just a reminder if your GWRRA membership is coming up please pay 30 to 60 days out
6. I would also like to thank everyone who is sending in articles. Please, let’s continue to give Mary your
support. Anything you do helps to make Mary’s job easier and makes your newsletter look great
Like always looking forward to seeing each and every one of you at our next Chapter Gathering or ride,
Remember ride safe and most of all have fun

Touring Tip:
Helping a Stranded Rider
(submitted by Jim Hine)
In the earlier days of motorcycling, when bikes were less reliable, riders frequently became stranded by a
mechanical malfunction. Back then, motorcyclists were often as handy with a wrench as they were with the throttle.
If they couldn’t fix their own bike, other riders invariably stopped to help out. The bonds among fellow bikers were
never stronger.
Today, we’re living in much different times. Modern motorcycles are less prone to breaking down. Crime is more
prevalent. Many times a stopped bike along the roadside is due to something other than a mechanical malfunction.
The rider may be taking a bio break in the bushes, extracting refreshments from the saddlebags, or some other
plausible reason for stopping that doesn’t require assistance. It’s easier nowadays for other riders to rationalize not
stopping to ask if help is needed.
In the event an actual mechanical problem is encountered, many, if not most, riders have roadside assistance and
carry a cell phone to procure help. I recall an instance when a fellow rider—a member of the RoadRUNNER staff
who shall remain nameless—simply ran out of gas. I’ve personally been surprised to find a nail in my rear tire on
several occasions. So unexpected breakdowns still do happen out on the road!
But let’s suppose a single rider is stranded. How does a passing motorist know if the rider needs help? The
universal signal for a car driver needing help is a raised hood. Last time I checked, motorcycles don’t have hoods.
So, is there a universal SOS signal for motorcyclists seeking help from passersby?
The Ministry of Transportation in Ontario, Canada, advises that riders who need help should “… place your helmet
on the ground near the road.” (Another good reason to wear a helmet, even if it’s not required.) One of the more
common hand gestures, used in some locations, is for the passing rider to give a thumbs-up signal, to which the
stranded rider would return a thumbs down gesture if help is needed or a thumbs-up if it’s not needed. The stranded
rider can also try to get help by waving emphatically. I remember doing this once and the passing motorist just gave
a friendly wave back. Of course, most of us would simply pull over and ask if they need help—not too complicated.
What do you do if a rider is stranded? As indicated earlier, we live in a riskier world than our forefathers. Here are
several questions to consider:

Do I have the tools and expertise to help someone repair their motorcycle?

Is it too risky to stop after dark to offer help? Should I offer it only during daylight hours?

If a group of riders is stopped, how much can I really add to fixing any problem?

Is it safe to stop and offer help to strangers on the road?

Does the situation feel OK or do I sense that something isn’t right?

Should a single female rider ever stop to help a male rider(s)?
There aren’t any easy, universal answers to these questions. Each rider has to assess the particular circumstances
of each situation. My personal experience has shown, though, that riders are often likely to offer help to other riders
because of the overarching camaraderie and goodwill among motorcyclists, even now.

MARCH MEET & EAT
Saturday, March 12, 2016
Not only was the meal outstanding at the Nisbet Fire Hall, the company we shared with our fellow
“wingnuts” is always absolutely the best! The volunteers at the fire hall were ready to accommodate
the 16 of us, all at the same table. Attending were John and Deb, Joe and Sharon, Bill and Annette,
Bill and Jean, Jeff and Bonnie, Jim and Carol, Fred and Helen and Dale and me. The meal, all
homemade of course, was all you could eat ham, mashed potatoes and gravy, corn, coleslaw and
rolls and we can’t forget the desserts . . . sadly, there was no ice cream, but everyone got to choose
from a variety of delicious homemade cakes and pies. Poor Helen, asked for coconut cream, but got
banana cream instead . . . bummer.
You can probably guess who rode
to the dinner on this beautiful
Saturday afternoon - already
starting to add up the miles for this
year’s high mileage award . . . Jim
and Carol, Joe and Sharon, Jeff
and Bonnie and Bill and Jean
(loving their new CSC trike). For
those who couldn’t be there, we
missed you! Hope to see you soon.
Full riding season is right around
the corner. Be safe out there!

KETTLE COOK
Sunday, March 13, 2016
On Sunday March 13th, several of us went to North Montour Sportsman Assoc. for a wonderful
meal. We had ham and bean soup, pork, the best baked beans, scallop potatoes, salads, pickled
eggs, and much, much more. Oh and we cannot forget lots of great desserts. Those in attendance
were. Jim and Carol Tanner; our hostesses, Claude and Carol , Roger and Joanne, Roger
Dauberman and his brother, John, Dale and Cheryl, Larry and Ginni, Bonnie and Jeff, and John and I.
We truly enjoyed the meal and the great company of all those there. Some of those in attendance
got to watch scrapple being made and got to purchase some to take home. It was another great
outing with our GWRRA friends. Thank you all for coming out with us, and Jim and Carol, Thank You
for the invite. See you next year.

REMINDERS….
MILEAGE – If you did not turn in mileage for last year, please give your CURRENT odometer reading to Jim
Tanner before you start riding this year. We would like to see everyone participate to see how many miles
Chapter M rides in 2016.
HOBO STEW – Any door prize donations would be greatly appreciated. If you have any contacts at any area
businesses, please ask if they would be interested in donating something. We are also asking members to
make baked goods for the day of the event.
CHAPTER CLOTHING ORDERS – Please note the change to the order form for Chapter clothing. If paying
by check, the checks now need to be made payable to Annette Babcock. The next order will be placed at the
end of June. Please submit all order forms and payment to Annette.
NATIONAL SEPTEMBER 11 MEMORIAL & MUSEUM BUS TRIP – We were unable to fill the bus for the April
23rd trip to NYC. The trip has been cancelled and we will try to reschedule for another time.
FROM OUR DISTRICT DIRECTORS:
Now is the time of year when the grass is turning green, daffodils are blooming, and there are beginning to be
more warm days than cold days. Everyone is getting the bug to hop on their wings and start riding. Some of
you have already had their wings on the road. I hope everyone is careful because there are some roads with
salt and gravel still on them and it doesn’t take much to throw the bike into a slide.
Andi and I have visited a couple chapters recently and they talked about all the rides they are planning. Make
sure you go onto the district website at www.codynparker.com and check out the ride schedules for all of the
chapters. There just may be one that would peak your interest. If you don't have your ride schedule on your
website, make sure you get it out there. This is a great way for other chapters to see what's happening
throughout the district. Riding with another chapter is great way to meet other members and make more
friends.
We attended the Couple of the Year retreat in Duncansville in March. We are proud to say that 20 chapters
out of 21 have a Couple of the Year. Not every couple was able to attend the retreat but those that did attend
said it was very helpful and informative.
The PA District Rally in State College is getting closer. We hope you made your hotel reservations and sent in
your registrations. We will have approximately 8-10 vendors - both indoor and outdoor vendors. There will also
be a jewelry and embroidery vendor plus a seminar on how to make jewelry. Along with games and rides, it
promises to be a fun time for everyone. Now we need Mother Nature to cooperate. I know I am getting hungry
for some Penn State Creamery ice cream.
Hope everyone is working on selling the district raffle tickets. We have already received some sold tickets
returned to us. Thank you to all who have sold tickets. This is a good way to make some extra money for your
Chapter.
Andi and I would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate Chapter PA-V for being selected PA District
Chapter of the Year. PA-V has been selected Chapter of the Year previously and they said that going through
the process has made them a strong chapter. This may be something your chapter may consider doing. I'm
sure if you look at the Chapter of the Year guidebook you will see that the some of the requirements are things
that your chapter is already doing. We had six chapters compete for the Chapter of the Year award. They
were Chapters B, D, H, I, M, V. That is a good number of chapters but it would be even better to have every
chapter in the state participate. This year the point standing was really close. We had less than 100 points
separating the six chapters.
We are anxious to see everyone at the District meeting on April 9th at the Blue Knob Conference Center.

GOOD THINGS TO EAT
Macaroni & Cheese Recipe
Easy, one dish
From the kitchen of: Cheryl Chapman
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Use a deep 9x13 glass dish.
Melt one stick butter in dish and stir in 2 heaping cups elbow macaroni to coat (don’t stir again). Pat
down the macaroni so it covers the bottom so there are no holes in the coverage.
Slowing add 1 quart milk (I use super skim).
Cover the macaroni with 1 pound of grated extra sharp cheddar cheese.
Bake 1 hour.
Option: sprinkle crumbled chips or bread crumbs if desired last 15 minutes of bake time.

Friends
Thinking of you…
My Dear Friends,
How can I ever “thank you” for what you have given to St. Anthony’s Center. You, as volunteers who help to make the
meals, etc., you give of yourselves and don’t count the cost. Each day I thank God for you.
To each of you, my dear friends, who give so generously to St. Anthony’s on a
monthly or yearly basis, or occasionally, how grateful I am! You keep St. Anthony’s
going from day to day, year to year, for 35 years to be exact.
Each day I thank God for you.
He looks down upon you with a smile and says to each of you, “Well done, good and faithful servant. Whatever you do for
the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did it for ME.” All those who give food, clothing, furniture, appliances,
you have made so many people happy and so thankful for what they have received.
Each day I thank God for you.
To each of you who work for St. Anthony’s Center away from the scene, but behind the scenes, thank you so much for your
support and prayers. Everything you do counts in a very special way. Thank you! You are in my prayers each day.
God love you, one and all!
In Christ,
