Newberry, SC. Friday-Sunday, September 27-29, 2013. Once again the weather gods smiled on a Hudson gathering and we enjoyed a perfect weekend of cool fall sunshine. Although this turned out to be a fairly small meet we like the intimacy that naturally occurs when folks can talk in smaller groupings. We enjoyed learning things about Bob Hunt and Henry Dabrowski which did not appear in their newsletter bios. We learned how Host Charles Hatch came to spend 35 years at Newbery College and how he met his lovely lady friend Nancy Meynard. Both Bob and Henry’s parents spoke German and Polish, respectively and Charles has degrees from U.S.C. and Johns Hopkins-his Doctorate. We asked Charles to send us a bio for our newsletter. He has had a fascinating life. Events kicked off on oriday night with dinner at the local bistro, The olying Pie, where Charles and Nancy secured us a private room , and kept it filled with dishes of appetizers as we dropped in and out between our other activities. This restaurant is part of Newberry’s revitalized downtown, a grand example of how to bring a Nineteenth Century town back to life. The old brick and tile facades have been cleaned up and parks added. While we did not dig up any lost Confederate gold we found a jewel of a town and we thank our hosts, the town and the college for giving us a view of a way of life we had almost forgotten. On Saturday morning we assembled around the fountain on the campus of Newberry College, in a good position for students and the public to view our Hudsons. Lunch was in the adjacent student dining facility where we were privileged to have a private area reserved for us. Newberry College has approximately 1100 students and it seems to me this is just the right number. The students are unfailingly polite and helpful and, remarkably, they were taught to say “Sir” and “M’am”! After lunch a group visited the nearby Carter and Holmes orchid greenhouses. On Saturday evening Charles had arranged for the chapter to be co-sponsor of the scheduled cruise-in at the Newberry Sonic Drivein, where we contributed several door prize items and displayed four Hudsons (picture above.) oor those who did not indulge in Sonic hot-dogs, hamburgers and milkshakes supper was again available in our private room at The olying Pie, along with Nancy’s wonderful appetizers. On Sunday the hard core of Hudsonites and two Hudsons, Charles ’46 and Bob Hunt’s ’41, met at the college fountain in perfect fall weather. There was kicking of tires and swapping of stories, some of them true! 2 President Henry Dabrowski convened a short but enlightening business session. After thanking hosts Charles and Nancy for all the fun including the mention of some cheese cake which disappeared so quickly we never had a sighting, he opened a discussion about how to attract more members to attend our South Carolina members meet or meets. Because our chapter members are aging (except for the ladies of course) as well as our cars, travel is becoming more difficult and our membership is largely located in the metro Atlanta area. An obvious help would be to recruit more members from South Carolina yet there are thirteen families on our roster from Newberry sudents enjoying the Hudsons. that great state and only three attended. I t was suggested that members with vans could offer to help those who find the trip challenging. Of course that would reduce the number of Hudsons. We missed seeing Dogwood chapter members and hope we can encourage them to attend in the future. Another suggestion was to invite other clubs such as the Studebaker Drivers club and the AACA. A final thought on the subject was that Newberry town has a great October oest and we should schedule the 2014 meet to include that event. President Henry reported on the National Meet in San orancisco this past July. Treasurer Charles Hatch reported that the chapter’s account stood at around $4500. Members present approved that Charles be reimbursed for the expenses he incurred in his hosting duties for the Crank-up Meet. Bob Hunt proposed that surviving spouses of members be sent the electronic version of the newsletter and that other surviving family members be sent sample copies with an invitation to join. This proposal will be voted on at the Annual Business Meeting in November. New Business was introduced with a discussion of the Dixie chapter-sponsored 2016 International Meet in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Henry expressed gratitude for Becky and John Upchurch’s taking on the job of organizing it. Much has already been done but we were encouraged to “just say ‘yes’” if and when asked to help with the meet. The host hotel will be—where else?!!—The Chattanooga Choo Choo Hotel and Convention Center. This hotel has for years specialized in shows like ours and the town is full of exciting places to see. As a suggestion to Becky and John the group recommended a car be obtained as our raffle item because that was so successful at out chapter-sponsored 1985 Meet in Atlanta. Several cars were suggested including Charles Hatch’s 1946 Super Six Sedan (seen in the picture, left.) Charles is open to making a “deal” with us. This car has been in the chapter since the nineteen seventies when it was a “Garage-oind” in Atlanta. With a little detailing and tuning up it could be a popular attraction for ticket sales. We are sure the Upchurchs would appreciate your suggestions on this subject. The next meet will be the October 26 joint meet with the Packard club. This is the Packard club’s annual Pig Roast and info is in this newsletter. Members were encouraged to bring their Hudsons! Members were also encouraged to attend the AMC meet which will have met in Duluth ,GA. on Oct 5 by the time you are reading this. (See some pictures below.) Our President asked us to think about Meets for 2014 and to send suggestions to Meet Coordinator , Nancy Delf (nandelf@aol.com). Venues suggested included Telus Museum, Cartersville, GA.; Cheaha State Park, AL; Junk yard at White, GA.; The Railroad Museum in Norcross, GA.; and Amicalola State Park, Dawsonville, GA. oollowing the meeting the group enjoyed a buffet in the adjacent student dining facility before heading for home. Annual Business and Planning Meet, Canton, GA. Hosted by Robert and Linda Hudson. December 6-8 Christmas Meet, Dahlonega, GA. Hosted by John and Becky Upchurch. We need more members to step up and participate by hosting a meet, instead of always leaving it to the same few people to bear the burden. If you can host a meet, or have ideas about locations or activities for meets, please contact VP/Activities Chair Nancy Delf or any Chapter officer. Please do your share for your Club! 5 CARS & DRIVERS A surprise attendee at the Carolina Crank-up in Newberry. We were delighted to make the acquaintance of a lady who appeared at Newberry College on Saturday , and who turned out to be Lynn Eskridge Vrooman, the daughter of Mr. Joseph W. Eskridge, the Hudson Motorcar Company’s VP of Manufacturing prior to, and during, WW II. Mrs. Vrooman had driven down from her home near Winston Salem expressly to attend our meet. She was overjoyed to be taken for a ride in Park Waldrop’s Hornet convertible, as seen in the picture on the left. She had brought with her to Newberry a box full of interesting papers, letters and photographs of her parents, the Hudson Company, etc., some of which she shared with us on Saturday evening at the hotel, and during supper at The olying Pie. Lynn told us that she has recently rejoined the National HET Club and following the meet she asked to be sent an application form to join the Dixie Chapter. She also sent us the picture (left) showing her mother, grandmother and older sister bringing newborn Baby Lynn home from the hospital in a Hudson (or possibly Terraplane ?) convertible. We look forward to seeing Lynn at future meets and learning more about her family’s fascinating history with Hudson. Problems with parts. A recent article by Charlie Nau in his newsletter for the 1955, 56, 57 Group reminded us that there have been problems for some time in obtaining rubber and plastic parts for our Hudsons from K-Gap and some other suppliers. Charlie reported that Doug Wildrick has bought out K-Gap and can now supply rubber parts.
