Spring out of Winter!
With the weather we’ve been having, I’m sure
everyone is looking forward to “springing” out of
winter. Maybe your dog has put on a few pounds
from less activity. All Wheaten owners know the
joys of paws covered in hundreds of little snowballs
that leave puddles all over the house! We try to limit
that outdoor time to avoid having to go through the
thawing process too often. Get those dogs back
into shape! Take them for a mile or two walk or even
just around the block. Go to the park. Get outside
and throw the ball, although most of our Wheatens
will likely look at that ball and wonder when you are
going to go get it. That’s okay though, it’ll give you
an opportunity to burn some of those extra winter
pounds off yourself.
A little exercise each day is important to
people and dogs alike. Be sure to make a
conscious effort to exercise and get outdoors and
enjoy some fresh air and sunshine!

ONO 2008
The “Owners Night
Out” Party was a lot of fun as
usual. After the welcome hour,
our buffet was set out and
everyone enjoyed a delicious
meal. There were conversations going on at every table;
everyone telling “tails” about
their Wheaten—from humorous
stories to tips on how to correct
problems.
Visors were given out
that fit the Wheaten head to a
tea. We’ve asked everyone to
come up with his or her own
idea on decorating them, take a
photo and submit it to be
published in Tale Waggers.
16
Our centerpieces this year were votive
candleholders with an Irish prayer engraved on them set
on top of beautifully made dollies with Wheaten heads
and Irish rope knots embroidered on and donated by
Linda Carpenter. Names were drawn for the winners.
The highlight of the party was our doggie gift
game – this always brings laugher to all.
A special thank you to Linda Carpenter, Angie
Giacoma, Maggie Evans and Dorothy Paszkowski for
helping me with ONO.
Our Club has over 125 members and only 30
members attended. I hope to see more of you there
next year!

DNA Collection Project
By Kenna Kachel
On January 12, 2008 a DNA Collection was held at the office
of Dr. Robert Lerner in Southfield. More than 40 Wheatens donated
their blood from which DNA will be extracted for future research.
It was a fun afternoon for everyone. People renewed old
acquaintances and made new friends. The Wheatens were happy
to participate because, as we know, our Wheatens are always
happy to be the center of attention. We had refreshments and a
raffle. The tickets were available for each Wheaten participating
and there were some very special prizes including travel bags
created especially for the day by Jacki Stein.
Owners were asked to complete online surveys dealing with
their dogs as well as consent forms. The blood samples were
divided between the Canine Phenome Project at the University of
Missouri and the National Institute of Health. Owners are asked to
continue updating the information online for their dogs so that the
DNA will be as helpful as possible so this is an ongoing
commitment.
Motor City breeders Carol Shaltz and Jacki Stein did an
outstanding job of getting the word out and promoting our effort. Dr.
Robert Lerner, Rhonda Lowe and Becky Moggio from the Jones
Veterinary Hospital volunteered their Saturday afternoon and worked
very hard to collect the blood.
Participants included:
Geri, Rooney, Gabby and Halle McNamee, Jazz Fischer, Zowie
Cicala, Murphy Bergman, Fiona Giacoma, Keavy Ambrose, Murphy
Nabozny, Wallace Plunkett, Ceilli and Doozer Cojanu, Maeve and
Dughan Stein, Murphy Triantos, Ben Johnson, Astro Weir, Jacques
O’Malley Elias, Niamh Shaltz, Charley, Sophie and Chester
Copenhaver, Matilda Bogaerts, Tagg Tyler, Hogan Sanford, Gracie
and Annie Locke, Gracie Bressette, Lulu Black, Tuala Burton,
Kestrel and Deaglan Greminger, Molly Liechty, Divot Davis, Rascal
and Max Fox, Parker and Lyra Koncz and Dylan and Lily Kachel.
These dogs and their owners participated in a very important
project that may lead to the answers to canine health issues and we
thank them.

SOFT COATED WHEATEN
TERRIER HEALTH
SCREENING
With spring fast approaching, everyone should be
thinking about health screening their Wheatens. A
good time to have this done is when you are making
an appointment with your veterinarian to test your dog
for heartworm.
Your veterinarian can check for signs of PLE, PLN,
RD, and Addison’s disease with blood and urine
tests. Your veterinarian should run the following tests:
Biochemical profile including:
Total protein
Albumin
Creatine
BUN
Cholesterol
Sodium
Potassium
Phosphorus
Complete Blood Count
Routine Urinalysis including
Specific gravity
Dipstick
Urinary sediment
Urine Protein/Creatinine Ratio

SOFT COATED
WHEATEN TERRIER
HEALTH PROJECTS
Wheaten health is important to all of us. With the start of a new year,
I thought a description of current health projects would be beneficial
to all. During the coming year and years to follow, our club will be
asking for donations to support these projects as well as doing
raffles and other fund-raising activities. I feel this is a start to keep
everyone informed on what is being done to help find answers so
Breeders can enhance their knowledge and owners can have help
with treatment.
Donations can be made throughout the year. Checks should be
made out to the individual projects; however, they should be mailed
to Carol Shaltz for record keeping for our club. Checks will be
forwarded to the appropriate foundations.
Gliadin Commitment
In 1995, the AKC Canine Health Foundation approved a proposal
for a grant, “The Mode of Inheritance of PLE/PLN in Soft Coated
Wheaten Terriers”. The grant provided for the support of a colony of
dogs at North Caroline State University. A member of the Soft
Coated Wheaten Terrier Club of America donated a pregnant bitch.
This was the start of the research. Later, an affected dog was bred
to a Beagle (chosen because there had been no documented cases
of kidney disease) and produced Wheagles. The cost associated
with the maintenance of the colony dog averages $2,000 a year for
the rest of their lives. A pledge program was started called “Adopt a
SCWTC Colony Dog.” Our club adopted Gliadin. With
contributions from annual commitments along with one-time
donations, we have met the $2,000 commitment each year thus far.
Checks made out to:
NC Veterinary Medical Foundation

SCWTCA Endowment Fund
The SCWTCA, Inc. has set up a specialized fund strictly for the
purposes of supporting projects devoted to Soft Coated Wheaten
Terrier health. The purpose of this fund is to give the Wheaten
community more options for making donations to advance projects
devoted to Wheaten health. The funds will be used for health
related issues of the SCWT. They will be used to fund grants
selected by the SCWTC Endowment Fund Board or provide
matching funds for grants approved by the American Kennel Club –
Canine Health Foundation.
Checks made out to:
SCWTCA Endowment Fund

AKC Canine Health Foundation - Soft Coated Wheaten
Terrier Genetic Research Fund
These donations are restricted to the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier
Genetic Research Donor Advised Fund to begin the search for the
hereditary links to PLE/PLN. Phase I: Initial goal of $20,000 to
allow the formal submission of a grant request with additional goals
of $20,000 each for funding of the project. The current total raised
is $72,485.55 for the Genetic Research Funds, but the goal is
ongoing since the research is just beginning. David Ronsheim is
the Project Financial Officer.

It is my sincere hope that our club will continue to help fund these
projects so we can have healthier Wheatens.
Sincerely,
Carol Shaltz – Health Director

Imagine if each month you waited for Truman, Snickers, Toula, and
Buffy to come visit you. You have the opportunity to interact with these
lovable, lickable dogs. The time you spent with these Wheatens
brightened your day and put a smile on your face.
Now, imagine if you are the Truman, Snickers, Toula, or Buffy. You
look forward to visiting your friends each month. You are given all sorts of
attention and unconditional love. You reap the rewards of your visit and
usually spend the rest of the day sleeping from the excitement of your visit.
Fortunately, you don’t have to imagine as this can become a reality
for you and your Wheaten. Each month some members and their
Wheatens visit the Georgian Bloomfield Care Facility in Bloomfield Hills.
We spend an hour visiting the residents each month. We visit on the last
Saturday of the month at 11AM.
We’re recruiting members to join us in this rewarding opportunity. We
aren’t looking for someone to commit to every month as we know that
other things pop up. However, we’d ask that if your schedule permits,
please join us. If you’d like more information on how to get involved, please
contact Janelle Tischer (janelle.tischer@gmplanworks.com)
Thank you for entertaining this great opportunity to get involved in our
club as well as brighten up someone else’s day.
