Explore the exceptional blue waters, various islands, and “soak up” the sunsets that the area is known for. Mount St. Louis Moonstone is one of the largest family owned ski resorts in Ontario offering great ski hills for skiing and snowboarding. It was founded 51 years ago by Austrian Alpine skier Josl Huter. The resort is located just north of Barrie in the snow belt region of Ontario. Today, it contains 36 slopes, 9 chairlifts and 3 carpets. The resort is known for being family friendly and prides itself on accommodating the beginner skier to the most advanced skier. Enrich in local history Southern Georgian Bay is rich in history and the area offers plenty of opportunity to immerse within it. Visit the local museums and travel back in time. Huronia Museum and HuronOuendat Village is a recreated native village representing the lifestyle of the Huron-Ouendat people; Sainte-Marie among the Hurons is an historical French Jesuit mission and one of Ontario’s oldest European community; Discovery Harbour is a 19th century British naval and military base worth exploring; and the Centennial Museum does not only display local heritage but is also a genealogical research centre. just 30 minutes from Midland off Hwy 400 Travel the trails Sections of our multi-use trails are registered as part of the Trans Canada Trail. Whether you are out for a leisurely stroll, a bike ride, snow shoeing, snowmobiling, or simply bird watching, these trails will take you through kilometers of true beauty along the shorelines and natural forests connecting the communities in Southern Georgian Bay. Aboriginal festivals and annual Pow Wows celebrate the native culture, and Le Festival du Loup offers the chance to explore history in Lafontaine. In 2016, Southern Georgian Bay will be honouring “The Canoe: A Canadian Cultural Icon” at the Wye Marsh Wildlife Centre through monthly themes beginning in May to December: Let’s Celebrate the Canoe; The Wonders of Birch Bark; Let’s go to Camp; The Voyageur; Tripping Month; Craft of the North; Natures Craft; and T’was in the Moon of Wintertime. During the winter months, the area is home to several winter festivals with a variety of fun activities. It offers a chance for locals and tourists alike to bundle up and spend a day outside enjoying winter activities. Although winter festivals are later in the winter season, the end of November brings First Light, a popular event at Sainte-Marie among the Hurons. It offers an incredible way to discover the history of the Jesuits while being guided by lantern-lit-paths throughout the village. For more information on Southern Georgian Bay’s events and festivals please refer to the events section in this guide book.
