For the twentieth time, the Carpet Magazine presents exciting projects featuring individually printed carpeting by Halbmond – and in passing, all the reasons why I love my job. From being a specialist for standard floor coverings, I became a consultant for creative interior design here at Halbmond almost five years ago. Nothing fascinates me more than developing a theme for a hotel or other premises through the design of the carpets – precisely tailored to meet the architecture and corporate design of the project. Easy-care LUXURY What strikes me is that for my customers, designs have become more and more expressive and individual with time. This not only reflects the spirit of the times and the courage to differ, but also the production possibilities created by modern technology. There is effectively no design that cannot be printed on a carpet today. One of the projects presented in this issue is a particular favourite of mine, for I helped to design it: Les Jardins d’Alysea Luxembourg. This noble residence for senior citizens proves that nothing is impossible for Halbmond. Entrance flooded with light – and bearing the signature of JOI-Design and Halbmond We would be delighted to turn your visions into reality, too. Until then, I hope you enjoy reading this jubilee edition of the Carpet Magazine. Regards, Carsten Bollmann Elegance throughout: artful floral sprays on carpets and walls 2 I The Carpet Magazine 20 Wash-down tiles and linoleum flooring are a thing of the past. Today, a residence for senior citizens conjures up images of pile carpets and the kind of luxury that is normally only to be found in hotels – especially when the residence is located in an area known as „Luxembourgian Switzerland“. The residence „Les Jardins d’Alysea Luxembourg“. With the help of JOI-Design and Halbmond, it was necessary to develop a coordinated special environment to give that really good feeling Carpets, design and colour would play a very big part in achieving this effect. The Carpet Magazine 20 I 3 A modern residence for senior citizens must maintain a very fi ne balance between aesthetics and functionality. On the one hand, a touch of luxury is needed to let the residents feel good and create an impression of unencumbered freedom. At the same time, however, all the floors, walls and furniture must be suitable for elderly users. In other words, they must never form a barrier and but must be able to be cleaned with speed and ease. Easy Maintenance is most important. Precisely this balance is mastered by the interior designers of JOI-Design, a Hamburg firm with whom Halbmond has already furnished many exclusive hotels. Everything that catches the eye in Les Jardins d’Alysea is also practical and suitable for everyday use, thanks above A place in the sun: the outdoor amenities of Les Jardins d’Alysea all to the planning which takes account of every last detail, the right choice of materials and the close collaboration between all concerned. Bildunterschrift The quick brown fox jumps Bildunterschrift The Halbmond has supplied around 3,500 square metres of carpeting in order to help the residents feel at home here. Unlike the case elsewhere, the carpets in Alysea are neither fitted nor laid on the floor: every single one is accurately inserted into recesses specially provided for them in the high-quality parquetry and stone flooring. Different grades, colours and printed designs combine here to form a very special textile floor covering – effectively recessed in precious natural stone. Accurately fitted: carpets with Easy Lift backing PROJECT Proprietor: Alysea.s.a., Luxembourg Location: Crauthem, Luxemburg Target group: Senior citizens, families Size: 58 Comfort apartments 38 Premium apartments 18 Double apartments Internet: This unusual approach has created an exciting mix of materials with an unbroken level surface. It not only looks elegant, but also offers the elderly residents additional security, for there are effectively no hazardous edges to trip over and no carpets to slip on. Carpets with Halbmond’s Easy Lift backing are used exclusively in the rooms, in order simultaneously to meet the more stringent demands in respect of cleaning and care. Easy Lift is a self-laying backing and the carpet can easily be lifted if necessary. www.alysea.eu CARPET Occasion: New construction Completion: 2011 Design: JOI-Design, Hamburg Carpet installation: Preising Fußböden, Neumark Quantity: approx. 3,500 m² Quality: DP 1150 (corridors / public areas) AP 930S (office area) However, another factor of equal importance when designing the flooring was that Halbmond can print the carpets with Easy Lift backing with any individual design and harmoniously merge it with the décor of the room concerned – in any desired form and with extremely complex patterns and colours in some cases. All in all, 15 sizes with 40 different carpet designs were developed and realized for the Alysea project: as rectangles, circles and even in the form of a „piece of cake“ complete with curved exterior. The result resembles a 5-star hotel. The mix of wooden and textile flooring differs in every room. And the individual designs let it appear as though personally made for each room‘s resident. But snow polo? Whoever associates snow polo with even larger hats and alpine jet set locations is way off the mark. Former European polo champion Rolf Zimmermann – the only German ever to have won the championship – has made this noble sport socially acceptable in East-Westphalia. Germany‘s first ‘Snow’ Polo Tournament was held at Schloss & Gut Wendlinghausen shortly before Christmas. Halbmond was there and inspired the organizer to even more interesting ideas. The palace Christmas party at Schloss & Gut Wendlinghausen in the Lipperland region has a long tradition. Last year, it was rounded off by a very special première: around 3,000 visitors were able to enjoy something that is usually reserved only for the beautiful and wealthy visitors to St. Moritz or Kitzbühel, namely a Snow Polo tournament with 8 riders, 26 horses and the first snow of the year – which naturally did not fall from the sky, but was instead specially (machine) delivered and spread over the meadow for the tournament. For the organizer, Rolf Zimmermann and his reputed sponsors, such as JAB Anstoetz or Porsche, the investment paid off. Never before has a game of polo attracted so much attention in Germany. All the regional media as well as three major national television stations were there and delivered live reports. Actor and winner of the Grimme award, Heino Ferch, was also there to see his wife Marie-Jeanette win the tournament. Prize-giving ceremony in the VIP tent – the team from the Porsche Centre Paderborn won the final game against Serana Polo Home & Hotel Design. Prominent polo fans: Heino Ferch and wife Marie-Jeanette Polo-photos: Jan Kleine Schloss & Gut Wendlinghausen: Built 1613 by a cousin of Baron Münchhausen in the style known as Weser Renaissance. Pop Art on carpets: exclusively designed for the snow polo event The festivities took place in the VIP tent next door – on carpets supplied by Halbmond and personally designed by Rolf Zimmermann‘s wife Aletta. The wall and floor coverings measuring 4x4 and 2x2 metres show the tournament‘s main motif in the style of Pop Art: with a polo player in luminous colours. The Zimmermanns intend to continue this creative collaboration with Halbmond in the future, too. Right now, they are not only planning further polo events, but also exhibitions of their own small collection of furniture and textiles with the name Serana Polo Home Design. It will also include high-quality carpets – individually printed by Halbmond. 6 I The Carpet Magazine 20 The Carpet Magazine 20 I 7 READER FORUM ... and the Winner is ... Dear Reader, Do you remember? In the last issue of the Carpet Magazine we asked you to send us your feedback on our magazine and possibly win an iPad2. The winner was drawn shortly before Christmas: Joerg Grieder, head of the Swiss Netto Einkaufsgruppe AG with over 280 independent retail outlets for floor coverings and interior design. We visited Mr. Grieder in his showrooms in Balsthal to present him his prize. Here, some 50 km south of Basle, the trade and consumers have a permanent opportunity to find out all there is to know about the latest trends and products. Carpets always have been and still are one of the most important sources of revenue for Netto. Why? Because Mr. Grieder and his team are convinced by the advantages of carpets. „Carpets are essential in order to feel good,“ they say and advertise them accordingly. Congratulations to Mr. Grieder and our thanks to all who took part. We value your opinion on the Carpet Magazine and look forward to hearing from you. Regards, Sigrid Neumann Marcel Bucheli (right), Halbmond Switzerland, presenting the first prize in our reader competition to Joerg Grieder, managing director of the Netto purchasing group. The Carpet Magazine 20 I 9 Hotels tell many stories, but they very rarely form the central starting point for the entire history of a city. The Ukrainian 4-star Hotel Bristol is such a historical venue, for it was precisely here that the Russian Empress Catherine the Great laid the foundation stone of what was to become Odessa in 1794. The modern port city rapidly became the most important Black Sea port. The Russian poet Alexander Pushkin praised its freedom and nonchalance. Hotel Bristol in Odessa The Hotel Bristol was built in precisely this spirit between 1889 and 1899. The famous architect Alexander Bernardazzi made every effort to give the erstwhile wealth of his native city a magnificent and hospitable face. With a mixture of renaissance and baroque elements, he designed a building that was soon to be one of the most beautiful in Russia. Even today, classical statues and white marble pillars impress passers-by on the outside, while elegance and luxury impress the guests inside. The hotel owes its name to what was then the most popular holiday domicile of Odessa‘s governors and aristocrats: the Hotel Bristol in Vienna. Even the latter-day Soviet rulers were unable to withstand the hotel‘s magnificent charm and called it „Krasnaya“ – the „red“ or „beautiful“ one, as you please. TRADITIONAL GLAMOUR In 2002, the hotel was once again to become a „Bristol“ – which in Old English means a „hallowed place“ or „meeting place“. To this end, the hotel was closed, enlarged and completely restored over a period of eight years. The talented young architect and designer Natalia Mershievskaya – highly commended for her sensitive, yet modern restoration of historical buildings – not only gave the Bristol a new look, but also a completely new spirit, skilfully combining the pomp and luxury of past centuries with today‘s most modern facilities and the use of innovative technology. The Hotel Bristol reopened in March 2011. Since then, literary people, Nobel Prize winners, film stars and heads of state have wandered over carpets developed by Halbmond. The complex patterns are based on the original designs and all grades adapted to the modern requirements of a luxury hotel. High-quality manufacture and printing technology have made it possible to create a floor covering that still looks as if it could withstand time and wear for ever more, even after major balls and galas. Just like the original Hotel Bristol. PROJECT The Hotel Bristol in Odessa is legendary. For over 120 years, its guests have included persons of rank and honour. It retained its glamorous aura even during the Soviet era, when it was renamed the Hotel Krasnaya. Since 2011, this gem of Ukrainian hospitality radiates fresh glamour under its former name. Halbmond helped to continue the story of this luxury hotel and make it history of colour and design accessible to future generations.
