2013 Annual Report
SANACC (Scottish Anglers National Association Competition Clubs Ltd) 2013 Annual Report S A N A cottish nglers ational ssociation C C ompetition lubs Report for 2013 Annual Report It has been an exciting year on various fronts with new sponsors for the competitions and success for the loch teams. 2013 also saw the Scottish Club Championship and the Champion of Champions Competition merge with SANACC. The Committee of the Scottish Club Championship, which was an independent competition affiliated to SANACC with competition entry restricted to SANACC members, took the decision to fully integrate with SANACC following discussion with the SANACC Committee. Special Resolutions on changes to the structure of SANACC will be put to the membership at the 2014 AGM. It is apparent that many angling clubs are struggling to maintain their membership numbers with the result that some clubs have either merged with others or ceased to exist. The number of member clubs in SANACC in 2013 dropped to 186 which was five down on 2012. However new clubs are still being formed and some other clubs are growing and in 2013 we had seven clubs join of which some were joining for the first time while others were returning after several years away. AGM Clubs will now be able to submit their proxy voting forms by email. Club secretaries are asked to include their email addresses on the membership renewal forms and with 85% of clubs now on email we are in a position to accept electronic submissions. Forms can still be submitted by post. AGM Resolutions re Merger with Scottish Club Championship The Scottish Club Championship and SANACC have been closely linked for a number of years and as entry to that competition was restricted to SANACC members it seemed a logical step to fully integrate the Championship with SANACC. The merger will provide the Scottish Club Championship Committee with the protection afforded by being part of a company limited by guarantee and the SANACC membership will benefit by ensuring their continued participation in that Championship and the Champion of Champions Competition. At present the SANACC committees are simply the Executive Committee and the Rivers Subcommittee. There is one representative from the Scottish Club Championship Committee elected annually to the Executive Committee and the Articles of Association allow for one representative from each sub-committee to be elected to the Executive Committee. It is being proposed that three additional sub-committees be added with responsibility firstly for management of the National Championship and Loch Internationals; secondly for the Scottish Club Championship and thirdly for the Champion of Champions Competition. As the Champion of Champions Competition is part of the Scottish Club Championship it is anticipated the sub-committee for its management will be staffed by members from the Scottish Club Championship sub-committee. The net effect will be that the Scottish Club Championship will have two members on the Executive Committee instead of one. The members of the committee to manage the National and loch internationals will comprise the four regional representatives, the international secretary, the national championship secretary and the SANACC secretary/treasurer. The Special Resolutions being put forward will be to alter the Bye-Laws to allow for the changes to the committees. Subscriptions The 2014 annual subscription has not been increased and will remain at £35. The cost of the annual subscription has not been increased since 2006. Finance SANACC remains in a sound financial position and has sufficient reserves to ensure its survival in the event of unexpected changes to income or costs. Sponsorship and Fundraising There were new sponsors for the National Championship and the Scottish Club Championship this year and they joined the many organisations and individuals that supported the SANACC teams and competitions in 2013. We are grateful to all of them for their help. It is our aim to ensure that cost is not a barrier to anyone being in any of the SANACC teams that represent Scotland and the sponsorship of the teams and competitions along with the support for the fundraisers go a long way to meeting that aim. Sponsorship/Fundraising – Loch Teams Fishers, the Lake of Menteith and WFFC 2009 were the main sponsors in 2013 and they have all confirmed that they will sponsor the loch teams again in 2014. That will be the seventh year of sponsorship for the Lake of Menteith and the fourth for WFFC 2009 and the third for Fishers. Seven Plus Seven Construction also sponsored the teams in 2013 for the third time. The teams were also sponsored in 2013 by Peek Imtech, Glen Maree Contracts Ltd., Glencorse RSV, R Clouston Ltd., Principal & Prosper, Lochgilphead & District AC, BVG Airflo and Flyfish Europe. There were three fundraising competitions held at Markle Fishery, New Haylie Fishery and Parkview Fishery in February and March and we are grateful to the management of each of these venues for the assistance and support they provided. We are also grateful to Nigel Burns and Wullie Simpson for continuing to help with the management of the fundraisers. The fundraisers were sponsored by Fyne Tackle, Fence’N’Deck, A & M Locksmiths, R & J Taxis and the Rock Cafe. Prizes were provided by Fishers, Flybox, Country Life, SKB, Raith Lake, Allandale Tarn, Ford’s Fly Tying, Anglers Creel, Crafteye Fisherman, Iain Barr Flyfishing, Outdoor Game & Tackle, Ray Anderson Joinery, Ronnie Glass, The Belhaven Group, Daiwa, Dounreay Fly Fishing Association and Angus Armour plus many other individuals Two presentation fly boxes, each containing around 140 flies, were prepared by the two teams and were raffled prior to each of the internationals. The box prepared by the Spring team was won by Kenny McClymont of Ardrossan Eglinton AC and the box prepared by the Autumn Team was won by Jimmy Coyne of Carron Valley Fishery. Each of the wooden fly boxes were provided by the Glasgow Angling Centre. Sponsorship/Fundraising – River Team The river team were fortunate to obtain sponsorship from CDS, Emtech, FES, Flyfishing World and Miller Construction which provided funds for the purchase of specialist equipment and pre match visits to the international venue. Sponsorship - Scottish National Championship The National Loch Championship was sponsored for the first time this year by Ridgeline UK who provided the winner of each of the ten heats with a Razorback soft shell jacket and each of the semi-final winners with a Ridgeline smock coat. At the final they provided the winner with Ridgeline smock coat along with a Bib and Brace. The runner up received a Ridgeline Mallard jacket and the third placed received a Ridgeline bag. The fly measures that were used throughout the competition were provided by the Glasgow Angling Centre. Nigel Winkle of Ridgeline with the semi-final winners Sponsorship - Scottish Club Championship The Scottish Club Championship was sponsored once again by Angling Active who provided rods for each of the three team members in the winning team along with three reels for the second placed team and three fly lines for the third placed team. Speyburn Highland Single Malt Whisky also sponsored the Championship this year and provided bottles of Speyburn Highland Single Malt for the top rod and top team each of the heats and semi-finals as well as providing Speyburn Highland Single Malt for each of the teams in the final. Sponsorship - Champion of Champions Snowbee and Speyburn Highland Single Malt Whisky sponsored the Champion of Champions with Snowbee providing the winner with a rod, the runner-up with a reel and the third placed with a fly line. Speyburn provided bottles of malt for the winners. Scottish National Trout Fly Fishing Championship The weather was kind to us for the 2013 Championship with all the heats, semi-finals and the final being run on the scheduled dates. Our competitor numbers were down slightly with 375 anglers fishing their heats as opposed to the 384 we had in 2012. The 2013 National Champion is Kevin McCabe of Change FF AC (photo on front page). Richard McHattie of Aberdeen & District AA was second with Brian Kennedy of Glasgow PO FFC and Alan Brock of Crieff AC close behind in third and fourth. On the downside there was one competitor disqualified in the heats for fishing with an oversize fly. Scottish National River Championship All four heats and the final of the River Championship were fished on the Pitlochry AC stretch of the River Tummel and we are grateful to Pitlochry AC for the support that they have given us. The permits for our competitors had to be obtained on-line this year but thanks to the flexibility of Pitlochry AC the bookings went without a hitch. There were 43 competitors in 2013 which was up by two on the year before. The 2013 River Champion is Paul Buchanan of Forth Federation of Anglers. Jim Fairgrieve of Coldstream & District AA was second and Kenny Riddell of Aberdeen & District AA was third. Unfortunately one competitor was disqualified for fishing with a barbed hook. Scottish Club Championship The partial catch and release system that was introduced in the heats in 2012 was continued this year and the saving on boat costs meant that the entry fee for the Saturday evening heats was able to be kept at £60 per team. 174 teams took part in the Championship which was down 13 on 2012. The 2013 Champions are Change FF AC ‘B’ Team. Newton Mearns FF were second and Alba Orvis FF ‘A’ were third. Collections were taken each Saturday night for the Yorkhill Sick Childrens Hospital and together with the prize cheques that were returned a total of £1,320 was raised throughout the competition. Champion of Champions The top five competitors from each of the Saturday evening heats of the Scottish Club Championship qualified for the Champions of Champions with spaces not being taken up by qualifiers being allocated on a count back. There were 58 competitors this year and the 2013 Champion of Champions is John Buchanan of Newton Mearns FF. Mike Willis of Bridge of Allan 76 AC was second and James Litster of Neilston FF was third Spring International - Bewl Water The international matches got off to a flying start at Bewl Water where Scotland took the gold medal by 21 fish from England who were second. Top individual rod and Brown Bowl winner was Scotland’s Peter Auchterlonie of St Fillans & Lochearn AA with 9 fish. Two Scottish rods, Andrew Glasgow of Ferry FF and Kevin Porteous of Dounreay AC, also had 9 fish and tied for second place. Autumn International - Lake of Menteith Scotland had a clean sweep in the Autumn International with the team gold, brown bowl winner and captor of the heaviest fish. The Scottish team had 135 trout which was 28 fish clear of second place Ireland. Top individual rod and winner of the Brown Bowl was Scotland’s Ray Anderson of Leslie & Glenrothes AC with 18 fish. Scotland’s Ken Oliver of Inverclyde was second with 16 fish. Colin MacDonald of Dunoon & District AC caught the heaviest fish which weighed 7lb 4oz. The Stan Headley managed team has now taken three gold medals in a row. River International - River Taff Scotland picked up the wooden spoon at the River Taff when narrowly missing out on third place. We have had a run of poor results and hopefully changes that are now being put in place will pay dividends in the future. Committee and Management Changes At the 2013 AGM, David Chalmers was elected as the Rivers Secretary. David has been on the Rivers Committee for a few years and has previously served on the Executive Committee. River Team Manager - John McCallum stood down as River Team Manager at the end of the 2013 season. John, who previously managed the team for a number of very successful years, returned in 2011 and has managed the team for the past three seasons. Interviews for the post of River Team Manager were held in early November and the new River Team Manager, subject to members approval at the 2014 AGM, is Ian Wilson. Tom MacTaggart SANACC Secretary Competition Results st 121 Scottish National Trout Fly Fishing Championship (Sponsored by Ridgeline UK) Everyone was keeping a close eye on the weather forecast ahead of the National Final with gales forecast to sweep the country over the weekend but we were fortunate and the stormy conditions held back until after the final and swept through before the Autumn International practice days started. As it turned out it was mainly bright with light winds and a good competition was anticipated. Nigel Winkle of sponsors Ridgeline UK was on hand to present the prizes and before the result of the final was announced he presented the winners of each of the semi-finals with a Ridgeline smock coat. In addition to providing the coats Ridgeline had also provided their Razorback jackets to the heat winners and for the final the winner received the Ridgeline Smock Coat along with a Bib and Brace. The runner-up received the Ridgeline Mallard Jacket and the third placed received a Ridgeline Bag. After presenting the prizes Nigel informed us that Ridgeline UK would sponsor the Championship again in 2014. The SANACC Committee wish to thank Ridgeline UK for sponsoring the Championship and the staff at the fisheries for their help throughout the heats, semi-finals and final. The Committee also wish to thank Stewart Marshall who piped off the competitors; Wendy Mitchell for doing the buffet; Ian and Eleanor Campbell for recording the result; and the boatmen for giving their time. The Championship final was a close run affair and with four competitors known to have 12 or more trout the top places could not be called until all had weighed-in. The competition was on a partial catch and release basis with the first three trout being retained and 2lb awarded for each trout returned. Twenty one competitors went to the scales with over 15lb of fish and the announcement of the top 18 that would form the basis of the 2014 international teams was eagerly awaited. The 2013 Scottish National Champion with 14 fish for 31lb 3.2oz was announced as Kevin McCabe of Change FF AC who narrowly beat Richard McHattie of Aberdeen & District AA who had 13 trout for 28lb 15.4oz. Brian Kennedy of Glasgow Post Office FFC was third with 12 trout for 24lb 13.2oz and Alan Brock of Crieff AC was fourth with 12 trout for 24lb 7.2oz. The 60 competitors caught a total of 334 trout which with an allowance of 2lb for each returned fish weighed 788lb 12.2oz The heaviest fish of the day was caught by Mark Stephen of Stewarton AC and went to the scales at 6lb 9.4oz. The best boatman was Douglas Scott who received a bottle of malt. Preparations had gone well beforehand and the Manager, Stan Headley, having taken the team to Gold at Lyn Brenig the previous Autumn was confident that another gold medal could be on the cards. Conditions during the practice days were variable with a mix of cold, wet and sunny days but with the emphasis very much on cold. As seems to be the norm at the Internationals, conditions changed again on competition day with the wind swinging round to the north which was the first time from that direction all week. At 10am on match day the 28 boats set off and they split roughly into three groups with one group heading for Canoe Club Corner, another group heading for Bewl Straight and the third group heading for Hook Straight. Reports coming in from observers during the day were that it seemed like the 'blue caps' were being seen to be lifting into more trout than the others and it was a nervous manager that was counting in the team as they returned at 6pm. As they came off the pier there were bags of 9 from Peter Auchterlonie, Andrew Glasgow and Kevin Porteous. Kevin McCabe had 7 and Tom Burnett had 5. There were 4 each for Ray Anderson, Craig Osborne and Jock Kettles. 3 each for Dugald MacGilp and Willie Cowan. Brian Mackenzie and Alan Porteous had 2 apiece and there was 1 each for Ronnie Glass (Captain) and Scott Miller. England were first to weigh-in and had 42 fish for 79lb 8.5oz with their best bag being taken by Roger Trustcott with 8 trout for 16lb 1oz. Next came Ireland with 21 fish for 42lb 3.5oz with their best bag being Francis McSharry with 6 trout for 13lb 8.5oz. Scotland came to the scales next and had 63 fish for 127lb 14oz. The best Scottish bag was taken by Peter Auchterlonie who had 9 trout for 20lb 5oz which secured him the Brown Bowl as the top individual and the Phoenix Silver Salver as the top Scottish rod. Wales were fourth to the scales and had 32 fish for 61lb 11.5oz with their best bag being taken by Jason Heath with 4 trout for 9lb 2.5oz. Richard Hooper of Wales had the heaviest trout at 3lb 3oz. This was a very convincing win by Scotland with 4 rods in the top 5 and a total of 9 rods in the top 20. In addition to Peter Auchterlonie being the top individual we had Andrew Glasgow and Kevin Porteous tying for second and Kevin McCabe in fifth. Although there were plenty of superb individual performances it was very much a team effort with the work done by all the team in the practice days paying off in great style. The team were also fortunate enough to have the help of many others who supported the fundraisers or provided sponsorship and the team now wish to thank them all for the assistance they provided. Captain Ronnie Glass delivers his ‘short’ winners speech Peter Auchterlonie - Winner of the Brown Bowl and the Phoenix Silver Salver It takes an excellent performance to win a Brown Bowl as the top individual rod and not many competitors mange to do it twice but Scotland’s Peter Auchterlonie did just that. In 1999 he took the Brown Bowl at Loch Leven and now 14 years later he has done it again. Peter has now been in a gold medal winning team in all four countries. Having won the last two gold medals at Brenig in the 2012 Autumn International and at Bewl Water in the 2013 Spring International, Scotland followed up by winning the gold medal on their home water. Ireland narrowly beat Wales for the silver medal with England in fourth. Scottish rods filled three of the top four individual spots and had a clean sweep of the prizes with the Brown Bowl winner and the captor of the heaviest fish. Some English and Welsh rods had travelled up early in the week and braved the windy conditions on Monday to put in some early practice on Menteith. For Tuesday's practice the wind eased slightly and although it was particularly chilly the fish were high in the water. All four countries found that there was a good head of fish in Menteith with a fair number of them over the 4lb and 5lb mark. Captain Wullie Leach being congratulated by IFFA President George Barron On Wednesday the wind dropped but the steady rain changed conditions from chilly to cold and although the fishing was good the trout were not as co-operative as they had been the day before. The rain stopped and the wind dropped a bit on Thursday and the trout were back on again. By the end of the practice sessions it was clear that fish could be caught at Stable Point, Cages, Rookery, Sam's Point, Hotel Bay and Shear Point on one side and at the Plantation, Butts and Lochend on the other. Trout had been caught on the bung, washing line and dries and with a weather forecast for light winds gradually strengthening throughout competition day it was anticipated that there would be good catches. The competition was fished on a partial catch and release basis with the first three trout being retained and an allowance of two pounds given for all returned fish. England were first to go to the scales and their 99 fish for 234lb 1.4oz put them in fourth place. Ireland went next and with 107 fish for 247lb 4.7oz they secured the silver medal. Scotland's captain, Wullie Leach, took his team to the scales and they recorded 135 fish for 299lb 14.8oz and took gold. Wales were last to the scales and their 106 fish for 243lb 4oz put them in third spot some 4lb behind Ireland. This was a clear cut success for Scotland being 28 fish and 52lb clear of the field. Photo: Scotland’s Ray Anderson receives the Brown Bowl The top individual rod and winner of the Brown Bowl and Phoenix Silver Salver was Ray Anderson of Scotland with 18 fish for 37lb 10.2oz. Ken Oliver of Scotland was second with 16 fish for 32lb 12.8oz. The top rod for Ireland and third placed overall was Kenneth O'Keefe with 13 fish for 28lb 9oz. The top rod for England was Anthony Fox with 13 fish for 27lb 6.6oz and the top rod for Wales was David Hoppe with 12 fish for 27lb 6oz. The heaviest fish on the day was a magnificent rainbow of 7lb 4oz that was caught by Colin MacDonald of Scotland. Paul won three of the four sessions to give him 9 place points which was 12 points clear of the field. Although conditions changed throughout the day Paul stuck with his sedge pupae and partridge spider on a floating line and his consistency won him the Championship. Not content with winning the event he also had the largest trout of the day which measured at 52cm. Paul was drawn on the upper sector in the morning and took 5 fish in the first session and another 5 fish in the second session to win both of the morning rounds. He moved to the lower sector in the afternoon where 2 fish in session three earned him a sixth place in that round but it was back to the top in session 4 when another four fish won him the final round. He had a total of 16 fish throughout the day and his nine place points was twelve points clear of second placed man Jim Fairgrieve of Coldstream & District AA who had a total of 9 fish. Twenty teams of three competitors took to the Lake in very calm conditions which changed very little throughout the day. In a mix of flat calm, light breezes and drizzly rain some competitors mastered the conditions while others found it difficult. This seasons competition started out with the first heat on the evening of Saturday 4th May and continued through each Saturday night at the Lake of Menteith until the last of the heats on 27th July. 518 anglers in 174 teams took part in these Saturday night heats. The top three teams from each heat plus the overall top placed 4th team then contested the two semi finals held on 23rd and 30th August to produce the top twenty that contested the final. The Scottish Club Championship Committee wish to thank the competition sponsors, Angling Active, for providing three rods, three reels and three fly lines to the the top three clubs at the final and our new sponsors this year, Speyburn Highland Single Malt Whisky, for providing bottles of Speyburn Highland Single Malt for the top rod and team at each heat and the semi-finals and for providing bottles of Speyburn for each of the team in the final. The Committee also wish to thank Quint, Douglas and Elma at the Lake of Menteith for their help and patience throughout the competition. The final was fished on a partial catch and release basis with the competitors retaining their first two fish and thereafter being awarded 2lb for each returned fish. Larger fish were capped at 4lb and anglers had to debarb once they had caught their two fish. At total of 359 trout were caught with 117 weighing 351lb 4oz being retained. The retained fish included trout of 5lb 3oz, 6lb, 6lb 2oz and 6lb 8oz. Wullie Leach, who just the week before had captained the Scottish Team that won the gold medal at the International at the Lake of Menteith, kept up his run of success by captaining Change FF "B" who ran out the clear winners of the Championship with 34 trout for 71lb 13.2 oz. Wullie took 16 fish to his own rod and was the top rod on the day and was joined by Carl Nixon who had 11 and Jim Crawford who had 7. Photo: Change FF AC ‘B’ Jim Crawford Carl Nixon and Wullie Leach The next six teams were only separated by two fish and the placings were to close call before the results were announced. Second place went to Newton Mearns FF with 26 trout for 57lb 13.6oz. Their team of John Buchanan, Billy Dewar and Kenny Hunter had 9 trout, 10 trout and 7 trout each. John was also in that gold medal Scottish team. Third place went to Alba Orvis FF "A" with 25 fish for 55lb and 0.4oz Their three anglers Paul Garner, Gregor Fleming and David Bonnington had 7, 10 and 8 trout each. On the run-up to the 2013 Champion of Champions the country was hit by bitterly cold north winds and with forecasts for cold weather to continue the prospects for competition day did not look good. As the competitors arrived at the Lake of Menteith on Friday 11th October the temperature was hovering around zero but with only a light breeze on the water hopes were rising. The 2013 Champion of Champions is John Buchanan of Newton Mearns FF who netted 14 fish for 31lb 4oz. John just edged out Bridge of Allan 76 AC angler, Mike Willis who had 15 fish for 30lb 15.8oz. Autumn looks to be the prime time for John as this time last year he won the Brown Bowl at the Autumn International at Llyn Brenig when Scotland took the gold medal and he was also in the Scotland Team that won the gold medal at the Autumn International at the Lake of Menteith in September. Photo: John Buchanan The boats had set off just before 10am and with boats heading for all areas it was looking like fish had been found all over the Lake. The light breeze gradually picked up before dropping away again near the end of the session and most of the competitors found the fishing hard. However the top 10 or 11 coped better with the conditions and as the boats returned the lodge there were only 5 trout separating the top 6 competitors. The 58 competitors caught 263 rainbows with 159 of them being returned. The 104 rainbows that went to the scales weighed 309lb 9.8oz.
