DSPNT NEWS PAGE 3 Bike Camp for Individuals with Disabilities July 29-August 2, 2013 How it Works iCan Shine, Inc., along with the Down Syndrome Partnership of North Texas, will be at UTA in Arlington to teach individuals with disabilities how to become lifelong independent riders! Travis’ Story Christmas 2012, Santa brought Travis a bicycle with all the trimmings. He was so thrilled, he immediately went out to try and learn. It was a nightmare and he retired his bike after 3 failed sessions. Later, his family heard about (Lose the Training Wheels), now iCan Bike & signed him up! The first day Travis was greeted by Ben, who also has Down syndrome. After 5 long days of encouragement, patience, and sore legs, Travis is now able to ride a bike with his mom just holding the handle bar. We will return this year to “lose the handle bar” so he can “do it all my himself!” Camp was a huge blessing to Travis and me! -Tammy Decker, Travis‘ mom & DSPNT board member iCan Bike uses a fleet of adapted bicycles, a specialized instructional program and a trained staff. Riders attend the same 75-minute session each day for 5 consecutive days (M – F) whereby they are physically assisted and encouraged by 2 volunteer “spotters”. Over the course of the camp the adapted bike is adjusted to gradually introduce more instability in an effort to challenge riders at their own individual pace. The week is concluded with a touching and inspiring award ceremony! iCan Bike riders are children ages 8 and up, teens, and sometimes adults who have a diagnosed disability but are able to walk without assistive devices and sidestep from side to side. How You Can Help Be a Volunteer Be a “spotter” for the same rider for each of the 5 days and experience the thrill of giving the gift of riding a bike! 75 invigorating minutes per day! it just may be the most rewarding exercise and emotional experience you’ve ever had!
