Saint Bonaventure Catholic Parish Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time February 10, 2013 Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page two PASTOR'S CORNER CHRISTIAN INITIATION Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Today’s Gospel (Luke 5:1-11) tells us about Jesus preaching to the people. He is on the shore of Lake Gennesaret and the people are pressing in on him. He chooses a better vantage point in Simon Peter’s boat. Jesus asks him to row out a short distance so the people can hear his message. Most likely Simon and his mates were listening to Jesus as they prepared their nets for the next night. Jesus finished preaching and then asked them to put out into deep water and lower their nets for a catch. Simon Peter protests that they tried all last night and caught nothing. But something in the preaching of Jesus has touched his heart and he obeys the Lord. They catch so many fish that their nets are tearing and even with the help of their partners in another boat now both boats are close to sinking. The effect on Simon Peter is to fall to his knees and cry out, “Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man.” But this admission of sin does not make Jesus leave, instead Jesus says, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.” These fishermen leave everything and follow Jesus. Do we feel like we’ve tried to make it and have come up empty? Do we feel Jesus asking us “lower your nets” one more time? Do we protest, “What’s the use, Lord, I just can’t do it; it won’t work.” When we try to do things our way without the Lord we come up empty. Try following the Lord and see what happens. “Do not be afraid.” Rite of Sending 10:30 a.m. Mass This Sunday our parish community sends forth our catechumens and candidates to the Rite of Election with Bishop Kevin W. Vann. This step marks the beginning of the final, more intense preparation to receive the Sacraments of Initiation this Easter Vigil 2013. Please pray for them. The St. Joseph Mission Circle members have a l o n g - e s t a bl i s h e d tradition of saving a ‘dollar-a-week’ each year to give to the Missions we support. This is the thirteenth year the parish has joined us with a Lenten collection. We are once again placing yellow envelopes in the pews and asking families to take one home and add a dollar a week to it and then return it to the collection basket before or on Palm Sunday. This will enable us to continue helping missions in Kenya, Ethiopia, India and Mexico. We thank you for your continued generosity which has helped us to send over $30,000 to our missions over the years. If you have any questions about the St. Joseph Mission Circle or the “Dollar-A-Week,” please contact Jean Rustemeyer at 714-842-0390. Page four February 10, 2013 World Marriage Day honors husband and wife as head of the family, the basic unit of society. It salutes the beauty of their faithfulness, sacrifice and joy in daily married life. The theme for WMD has been permanently adopted as "Love One Another". This phrase is the commandment given us by Jesus in John 15:12. It speaks to us in a simple but challenging way of how our Heavenly Father wishes us to live. Loving one another is a daily decision - simple, but challenging. The World Marriage Day Symbol speaks of the role and values we proclaim. Husband and wife are symbolically seen as two candle-like figures, reminding us that married love calls us to help enlighten the world. The couple is joined by a heart, focusing on love as the power that fosters unity within the couple and generates the capacity to be life-giving and inspire others to fruitfulness and unity. MARRIAGE ENRICHMENT WORKSHOP FOR MARRIED COUPLES - Saturday, February 16, 2013 The Diocesan Offices of the Deaconate, Ministry to Priests and Pastoral Care will be hosting a Marriage Enrichment Workshop for Married Couples. The guest will be Dr. Jim Healy. The workshop will take place at Marywood Auditorium, from 8:30 am-12:00pm. Cost is $20.00 per couple. For information call the Office for Pastoral Care at (714) 282-4203 or visit our website: http://www.rcbo.org/pastoral-care.html MARRIAGE MINISTRY “Love is a decision” is a maxim from the Marriage Encounter (ME) movement. Wonderful as marriage can be, it’s not always lived on an emotional high. Some days, we must just decide to love. The feelings will eventually follow. If you have not been on a Marriage Encounter weekend and are considering investing some time into your relationship, please visit the Marriage Encounter website and look for a weekend that will fit your busy schedule. http://ocwwme.org/ or call 714-873-5136. Looking for a special gift for your spouse this Valentine's Day? Consider sharing four evenings during our Treasure Your Marriage series April 2,9,16,23. Come heal and renew your relationship. L e a r n some new tools to strengthen and enrich your marriage. Please sign up in the parish center. MINISTRY OF THE MONTH The Traditional Choir The Traditional Choir sings at the 10:30 AM Mass on Sunday in addition to participating in liturgies during the Easter and Christmas seasons. The choir originated during the warehouse days in 1965 and was known to sing while rain was dripping through the roof cracks during occasional rainstorms at that time. Previous directors have been Sue Andres during the warehouse days, followed by Lorraine Stiles, John Hermann, Dr. Pat McCollam, Dr. Bob Luft and the present director, Wingate Greathouse. Many members of the choir have participated for a long time, although no one can come close to recently retired Truce Kuyper, having sung as a tenor for 42 consecutive years! The choir is now in the process of preparing for the Easter Season and welcomes new members to join in the celebration of the Mass through hymns and other musical selections. Members of the choir enjoy many benefits such as a reserved seating, which by the way is generously padded, at all masses, an excellent view of all celebrations, and the camaraderie of the members. Of utmost importance is the opportunity to participate in the liturgies more fully with songs of praise. An added benefit is the opportunity to advance in your general musical capability under the guidance of our present director, Wingate Greathouse. Prospective choir members can join for a trial period, such as the Easter Season, and then decide if they wish to continue. Occasional absences are not a problem. The church year is broken down into 4 sections: Fall through Christmas, Winter through Easter, Spring, and Summer (for which the choir is off). You can commit to only singing specific seasons. Although it is not necessary, having a general understanding of music and being able to "carry" a tune is a plus. A short, non-threatening audition is required, to determine in which section to place you. Being a professional singer is not a requirement. All sections of the choir have openings available. Prospective new members should contact the Director of Music, Wingate Greathouse, at 714-846-3359 x 497 or music@stbonaventure.org. The choir practices in the Choir Loft on Thursday nights for 2 hours starting at 7:30 PM and sings at the 10:30 Mass as mentioned previously. We hope to see you there! PARISH MISSION STATEMENT As Christian stewards, our mission is to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ to all people through word, sacrament, service, and community life. On Ash Wednesday this week, students at St. Bonaventure School will be given a CRS Rice Bowl packet for their families. Then next Sunday, we invite families who do not already have a Rice Bowl to pick one up after Mass and take it home so the whole family can participate in this spiritual journey. In the bulletin for each Sunday of Lent, we will have a spiritual reflection based on that Sunday’s Gospel. Also each week, we will learn a little about people in a different country around the world, and how our support has improved their lives. At www.crsricebowl.org, you can watch a 3-minute video about the country we are focusing on, get recipes for cooking simple meals to eat alongside the poor, and follow the Rice Bowl calendar for daily inspiration. Through the videos, we will learn about special programs which are helping people with their specific local needs, including an irrigation system in Burkina Faso, a tuberculosis clinic in East Timor, education for poor children in Lesotho, a community savings group in the Dominican Republic, a clean water project in Pakistan, and a food pantry in Oakland. A US project is included because 25% of the money collected in the Rice Bowl drive stays in the local Diocese to combat hunger locally. Please pick up a Rice Bowl packet and journey with us! “3rd world gifts and handarts” Sunday, March 3rd, 2013 After the 7:30, 9:00, 10:30 am and 12 Noon masses in the Parish hall This is an opportunity for you to purchase beautiful and unusual items made by artisans in third world countries (Africa, India, Central and South America) and help them to lift themselves from a life of poverty. “Come, Now is the time to Worship” & give thanks to God for what is Right and Just!
