Centuries before the coming of Christ, the prophet Isaiah confidently pointed to that time when miracles would abound for God’s people. In Jesus, the promise came to fulfillment as He touched the bodies and lives of many with His healing power and brought them strength and hope. As those who have experienced the power of God in our lives through the work of the Holy Spirit, we can find continuing encouragement. With strengthened hands, we can do the good works appointed for us. Holy Communion We believe that Christ’s body and blood are truly present in Holy Communion, and that we receive the forgiveness of sins along with the bread and wine in this Holy Meal. As a “Family Church,” we invite those who share this understanding, and who desire God’s forgiveness and strength, to join with us in receiving Holy Communion. If you have any questions, please speak to our pastor at any time. All worshippers are asked to fill out the “Fellowship Pad” in the pew and pass it down. After all have signed, please leave the pad at the end of the pew to be picked up after worship. Thank you! PRELUDE “Chorale and Andante con moto from Sonata 5” -Mendelssohn GREETING and ANNOUNCEMENTS HYMN “Hail to the Lord’s Anointed” LSB 398 CONFESSION & FORGIVENESS P: C: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. P: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 2 [Matthew 28:19b] C: But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. [I John 1:8-9] + Silence for reflection on God’s Word and for self-examination + P: C: P: C: Let us then confess our sins to God our Father. Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways to the glory of your holy name. Amen. Almighty God, in his mercy, has given his Son to die for you and for his sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. [John 20:19-23] Amen. HYMN OF PRAISE Glory to God 3 PRAYER P: C: The Lord be with you. P: Let us pray. O Lord, let Your merciful ears be open to the prayers of Your humble servants, and grant that what they ask may be in accord with Your gracious will; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. C: FIRST LESSON Isaiah 35:4-7a Say to those who have an anxious heart, “Be strong; fear not! Behold, your God will come with vengeance, with the recompense of God. He will come and save you.” Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf unstopped; then shall the lame man leap like a deer, and the tongue of the mute sing for joy. For waters break forth in the wilderness, and streams in the desert; the burning sand shall become a pool, and the thirsty ground springs of water; in the haunt of jackals, where they lie down, the grass shall become reeds and rushes. 4 R: C: This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. EPISTLE James 2:1-10, 14-18 My brothers, show no partiality as you hold the faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory. For if a man wearing a gold ring and fine clothing comes into your assembly, and a poor man in shabby clothing also comes in, and if you pay attention to the one who wears the fine clothing and say, “You sit here in a good place,” while you say to the poor man, “You stand over there,” or, “Sit down at my feet,” have you not then made distinctions among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts? Listen, my beloved brothers, has not God chosen those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom, which he has promised to those who love him? But you have dishonored the poor man. Are not the rich the ones who oppress you, and the ones who drag you into court? Are they not the ones who blaspheme the honorable name by which you were called? If you really fulfill the royal law according to the Scripture, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” you are doing well. But if you show partiality, you are committing sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors. For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become accountable for all of it. What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. But someone will say, “You have faith and I have works.” Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works. R: C: This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. ALLELUIA 5 GOSPEL LESSON P: Mark 7:31-37 The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the seventh chapter. C: Then he returned from the region of Tyre and went through Sidon to the Sea of Galilee, in the region of the Decapolis. And they brought to him a man who was deaf and had a speech impediment, and they begged him to lay his hand on him. And taking him aside from the crowd privately, he put his fingers into his ears, and after spitting touched his tongue. And looking up to heaven, he sighed and said to him, “Ephphatha,” that is, “Be opened.” And his ears were opened, his tongue was released, and he spoke plainly. And Jesus charged them to tell no one. But the more he charged them, the more zealously they proclaimed it. And they were astonished beyond measure, saying, “He has done all things well. He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.” C: HYMN “Praise the Almighty” SERMON LSB 797 Pastor Greg Dwyer APOSTLES’ CREED I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. PRAYERS OF THE CHURCH A: C: Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer. SHARING OF THE PEACE P: The peace of the Lord be with you always. 6 C: And also with you. + We encourage you to leave your pew and greet new people! + OFFERING + Please pass the Fellowship Pad at this time + OFFERING VOLUNTARY "Praise the Almighty" OFFERTORY Let the Vineyards LSB 955 © 1978 Lutheran Book of Worship. C: P: It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who on this day overcame death and the grave and by His glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and singing: THE WORDS OF OUR LORD Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when he was betrayed, took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to the disciples and said, “Take, eat; this is my body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of 8 me.” In the same way also he took the cup after supper, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” PROCLAMATION OF CHRIST P: C: As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes. Amen. Come, Lord Jesus. LORD’S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. MUSIC DURING COMMUNION “O Son of God, in Galilee” LSB 841 9 “O God of Mercy, God of Might” Tune: Dunstan 1 O God of mercy, God of might, In love and pity infinite, Teach us, as ever in Thy sight, To live our lives in Thee. 2 And Thou, who cam’st on earth to die That our lost world might live thereby, O hear us; for to Thee we cry, In hope, O Lord, to Thee. 3 Teach us the lesson Thou hast taught: To feel for those Thy blood hath bought, That ev’ry word and deed and thought May work a work for Thee. 4 All are redeemed, both far and wide, Since Thou, O Lord, for all hast died. Grant us the will and grace provide To love them all in Thee! 5 In sickness, sorrow, want, or care, May we each other’s burdens share; May we, where help is needed, there Give help as unto Thee! 6 And may Thy Holy Spirit move All those who live to live in love Till Thou shalt greet in heav’n above All those who live in Thee. NUNC DIMITTIS Song of Simeon 10 Public domain CLOSING PRAYER A: C: Let us pray. Grant, O Lord, that what we have received with our lips, we may keep with pure hearts. Amen. BENEDICTION and DISMISSAL P: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and give you peace.
