DON’T WAIT. VACCINATE!
15
Most folks don’t realize that we need vaccines throughout our adult lives.
Vaccines are still the safest and most effective tool we have to prevent
infectious diseases.
3 Important Reasons for Adults to Get Vaccinated
1.
2.
3.
You may be at risk for serious diseases that are still common in the U.S.
In the U.S., each year thousands of adults get sick from diseases that
could be prevented by vaccines. Some are hospitalized and some even die.
You can’t afford to risk getting sick. If you’re sick, you may not be able to take care of your family or
other responsibilities.
You can protect your health and the health of those around you. Vaccines lower your chance of getting
sick. Vaccines lower your chance of spreading certain diseases. Vaccines are one of the safest ways to
protect your health.
Getting vaccinated is easy… adults can get vaccines at the doctor’s office, pharmacies, workplaces,
community health clinics, health departments, and other locations.
Under the Affordable Care Act – the health insurance reform legislation passed by Congress and signed by
President Obama in March 2010 – requires health plans to cover preventative services and eliminates cost
sharing (like co-pays and deductibles). Most health insurance plans, including Medicare, cover the cost of
most “recommended” vaccines. Always check with your health insurance provider first.
*Recommended Vaccines:
Chickenpox (Varicella)
Hepatitis A & B
Influenza (Flu)
Shingles (Herpes Zoster)
Pneumococcal disease (Pneumonia)
**Diphtheria
** Tetanus
**Pertussis (Whooping Cough)
*Based on your age, health conditions, vaccines you received as a child and other factors.
**Td/Tdap may be given in combination or individually.
Vaccines save lives – By preventing outbreaks of diseases and protecting those who cannot be vaccinated.

Volunteer Views
Whoa! Where has the summer gone? And it has been a
hot, dry summer from the very late spring we had in
Northwest Ohio. Hopefully, everyone has managed to
stay out of the hot sun by attending a very cool and
welcoming senior center in their area! If not, why don‘t
you invite some friends to join you in dining out for
lunch at your nearest senior center, Monday through
Friday? As a matter of fact, make it your ―home-awayfrom-home‖ by helping the Site Manager in setting up
for lunch or tearing down after lunch, then hosting some
board or card games with your new friends? This IS a
form of volunteering, and one that we so need at each of
the sites!
From early spring to almost the end of summer, we
have had community-minded students helping us from
St. Aloysius School to 4-H students here in Bowling
Green. By the time you read this issue of Your County
Connection, we will be getting ready to attend the
Wood County Fair‘s ‗Senior Day‘ where students from
these local 4-H groups will be helping us. We come
from a great community of doers!
A very urgent need we have are Home Delivered Meal
volunteers all around Wood County. With the
increasing numbers of the homebound elders on the
routes, the delivery times have blossomed, making it
difficult to deliver within the timeframe an individual
can help while on their lunchbreak. Please ask your
family and friends who may be looking for some way to
help to consider volunteering. This is a dynamic way to
be the ―eyes of the community‖ and help someone
receive a nutritious and healthy meal.
You don‘t have to just deliver meals! If you have time
that you would like to put to use helping, participating,
being a friend to others, we can find an opportunity to
put your skills to use. Contact me and – let‘s talk! If
you have any questions, please give Jackie Metz,
Volunteer Coordinator a call at 419.353.5661 or
1.800.367.4935, or e-mail her at jcmetz@wccoa.net .
You will be glad you did!
