SCIENCE CLUB – WE CAN HAVE SMOKE WITHOUT FIRE ALARMS.
On the 12th November when most of you were catching the bus or walking home,
we were experiencing our best Science Club yet. We really do know how to do
Halloween in Science, I have NEVER had to carve a pumpkin so big in all my life!
After carving our pumpkins we set off outside when all the fun began. Our
massive pumpkin, which everyone was expecting to be turned into a carriage,
was in fact transformed into a smoke bomb…..pink and purple flares started to
come out of the top and the school itself couldn’t be seen through the clouds of
smoke. Just when we thought we couldn’t do anything else with these carved fruit
the two smaller pumpkins started oozing red foaming bubbles from their mouths,
actually looking pretty scary!
Then came the best part of the
evening, setting light to our OWN
sparklers we had made before half
term. Mr Victory lit the blow torch
and we all took it in turns to light
our sparkler to see who’s burned
the longest. How can we fit this
much fun into an hour afterschool?
Well how about you come along to
the next Science Club and see for
yourself.

MESSAGE FROM THE
OAK HALL & BISTRO
Would parents please try
to give their children the
correct money for break
and lunch as it is very
difficult to change £10
and £20 notes.
Alex had the world at his
fingertips, a contagious zest for
life and a pure love of all sports,
particularly football. He was a
skilled player and a devoted
supporter of Liverpool FC,
Carlisle Utd and Colchester Utd.
When not playing football he was
either watching it or playing Fifa
and was often heard chanting
“U’s” or “Come on The Reds”
very loudly in the shower!
Alex at Wembley Stadium on 21st November Everyone who had the pleasure
to meet Alex was touched by his

kindness, his smile, his amazing
sense of humour and his singing. He was a special teenager who is missed
in each and every way.
Alex was involved in a fatal accident on Layer Road whilst cycling to school
on Friday, 23rd November 2007 and the Alex Launder Memorial Tournament
was founded five years ago in his memory. The competition continues to give
Alex’s friends, family and the community a way to celebrate his life through
his passion for the sport and provides an exciting, competitive and
memorable experience for all involved.
Teams from local schools including The Stanway School, Philip Morant
School, Thomas Lord Audley School, St Helena School, Colchester High
School and Thurstable School took part and winners’ trophies and medals
were presented by players from Colchester Utd FC. Alex’s brother Harry
competed in the Year 10 team for The Stanway School who were champions
last year.
Special thanks are extended to the co-ordinators of the tournament at The
Stanway School and especially Mr Wade.
Natalie, Ian and Harry Launder
The Year 7 competition started slowly and it was not until the second round
of games that the first goal was scored, this honour going to the forward
from Philip Morant. The goal keepers had the better of the outfield players
and every game was tight from start to finish and after the league stage
there was still no clear favourite. During the knock-out stages Colchester
High managed to make the finals by way of 2 penalty shoot outs and they

faced a determined
Thurstable team. A very close
game saw it go to golden goal
extra time and with a minute
to go on the clock, Thurstable
secured the title. The game
was watched by Matt Heath,
a Colchester Utd player, who
had come to present the
winners with their medals
and trophy.
YEAR 9 ARMISTICE ASSEMBLIES
This year during the assembly meetings we decided to do something different, something that had
never been done before. We created a scene from WW1 in which the armistice had been signed.
However, a group of soldiers can’t hear their radio and one is shot and this grabbed the audience’s
attention. The assembly was then finished by poems and a video clip from “The Battle of Britain” film.
The assembly was designed to get people to remember who have fought in all wars as well as WW1
and WW2. We enjoyed creating it.
Fraser Logan, 9RVI
A big thank you to our hard working students and to Miss Hamblen who helped organise and practise
for the assemblies.

WAR
The troops march, the babies cry
Now it’s time to say goodbye
Men in uniforms green and black
They’re off to fight in Iraq
I’m in the warzone scared with fear
Hope I don’t shed a tear
All I want is a nice warm bed
Anywhere I can rest my head

In the Year 10 competition the boys once again played in the spirit of the game producing some very
high quality football. The games were close and not much between all of the teams. After the league
stages it was still all to play for and after some hard fought semi-finals it was down to Thomas Lord
Audley and Philip Morant Schools. After taking an early two goal lead it looked like Philip Morant had
it signed, sealed and delivered, but a resilient TLA team managed to pull one back and make the
closing moments of the tournament a nail biter. With time running out TLA threw everything at their
opposition but Philip Morant managed to hold on and win the trophy. The medals and trophy were
presented by Matt Heath, Tom Bender and Ryan Melaugh.
Well done to all the boys
involved and special thanks
must go to Harry Quinn,
Forrest Maddock and Sacha
Sibley for helping to referee
the event.
Mr S Wade
As I step onto the fire step
My heard is pounding with regret
As I look over to no man’s land
Piles of bodies lying everywhere
I hear the dogs bark
They come at me with no fear
Knives at the ready, ready to kill
Ready to watch the blood spill
Bang! Now I’m dead
I can finally rest my head
