In conjunction with ART MAUl '79, a series of four symposiums were held at Cameron Center. These informative gatherings were presented with the cooperation of all Maui arts groups and were directed by Richard Nelson of the Wailea Arts Center. The purpose of these symposiums was to assist the artists of Maui in their preparations for ART MAUl '79 and offer them the opportunity to meet and talk with some of Hawaii's most knowledgeable persons in the arts. Symposium I was held September 16, 1978. The development of an artist's portfolio and how to compose a resume' was demonstrated and discussed by a panel of experts including Ruth Tamura, Curator of Extension Services at the Honolulu Academy of Arts; Robert Bush, Director of the Wailea Arts Center; Tom Klobe, Curator of the University of Hawaii Art Gallery; and Ron Yamakawa of the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts. Pricing works of art, the relationship between the artist and the gallery, and the ethical practices and responsibilities of each were the topics of a lively panel discussion led by Laila Roster, Director of the Contemporary Arts Center in Honolulu. Marty Kelly, Photography Instructor for the Wailea Arts Center, spoke about the methods of photographing art and the importance of documentation and cataloguing each piece of work. Packing and crating two and three dimensional artwork was discussed and demonstrated by Walter Fraine of the Honolulu Academy of Arts. Mr. Fraine also reviewed the essential concerns in presenting and conserving art work. Dusty Benedict, of the Wailea Arts Center, showed examples of mat cutting and framing. Symposium I concluded with an open question and answer session. Symposium II was held October 14, 1978, beginning with a lecture by Dick Nelson. This seminar was designed to make the artist more conscious of the process he or she uses in resolving the basic questions in creating a work of art. Francis Haar showed his bicentennial film "Artists of Hawaii" presenting 18 of Hawaii's painters, ceramicists , sculptors, weavers and designers at work in their studies. The third symposium in the series was held November t 8, 1978. The subject was "Judging Art" - how aesthetic judgments are made as seen throu~h the eyes of the artists, the gallery, the buyer and the critic. The panelists included Alfred Preis, Director of the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts; Lisa Chock, art columnist for the Honolulu Star-Bulletin; Ruth Tamura, Curator of Extension Services at the Honolulu Academy of Arts; and John Wisnosky, Chairman of the Art Department at the University of Hawaii. On January 13 and 14, 1979, Symposium IV took place at Cameron Center. Tom Klobe, from the University of Hawaii Art Gallery, was with us again to offer specific advice for ART MAUl '79. Mr. Klobe showed slides of successful exhibits, pointing out unique display techniques and offered many valuable ideas on designing an art exhibit. With his assistance we constructed an actual scale model of ART MAUl '79. The completed model gave us our first visual impression of the installation of this exhibit. The tedium of months of planning and seemingly endless details suddenly dissolved in the satisfying knowledge that Maui's first juried all-media art exhibit was finally becoming a reality. The following Maui arts organizations have helped support ART MAUl '79: Hui Noeau, Lahaina Arts Society, Maui Community Arts Council, the Art Department of Maui Community College, Wailea Arts Center and West Maui Cultural Council. The SFCA is funded by appropriations from the Hawaii State Legislature and by grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, an independent federal agency. "Art should be encouraged as a potential for everyone's enrichment; but we must not confuse an explosion of Sunday painters with excellence. We must draw a line between the amateur or novitiate and the competent. It is the world of the professional that sets the standards. This attitude is necessary if we are to foster a higher level of creativity here in Hawaii, and more professional work." July - August 1977, Cultural Climate CHAIRPERSON'S MESSAGE ART MAUl '79 is a milestone in Maui's history. It's the first time that all of the organized arts groups from all areas of the island have enthusiastically joined with each other to accomplish a major project. It has been absolutely amazing and inspiring for me to watch each of the committee chairpersons use ingenuity, resourcefulness and pure determination to accomplish what, at times, seemed impossible. While planning the show for over a year, everyone's enthusiasm started on a high level and never diminished. This exhibition is for Maui - everyone on Maui; that has really been our only goal : to make Maui's own creativity more easily visible and available to each person who lives here. Our hope is that this accessibility to Maui's best creative work will eventually lead everyone to the conclusion that he or she is also creative and can also communicate without words ... that there is a place for the arts in each of our lives. Since this is Maui's first open , juried, all-media exhibition, we welcome your comments, so that the next ART MAUl can be even better. Send your criticisms, suggestions or praises to ART MAUl, P. O. Box 906, Lahaina, Hawaii 96761. And if you'd like to help with the next one, please let us know that, too! Janet Allan Chairperson
