Reilly Many of you know that the Castle, as an organization, is really still in its infancy. Decades of passionate work by an army of dedicated supporters has physically preserved this unique and truly beautiful place. As I look back on my past seven years of serving on the Joslyn Castle Board, I am reminded of the phrase “the power of ONE”. I think about all the past Board members that have given of their talents to make this organization grow and prosper. After purchasing the Castle from the State of Nebraska in 2010, the Castle has caught up on maintenance and restoration issues that tax dollars could not afford. And, by the amazing stewardship of past and current Executive Directors, the organization is financially stable. Staff turnover has generally been low, and every employee has made a significant contribution along the way. There have been experts in maintenance, landscaping, and grounds. The staff, as well as Board members and volunteers, have made the grounds breathtakingly beautiful. There have been docents, both paid and volunteer, that have shared the story of George and Sarah Joslyn and brought the Castle to life for our many visitors. Joslyn Castle has been blessed with extraordinary volunteers who have helped to execute many of the programs that have taken place over the years. There have been Designer Showhouses, Murder Mysteries, Car Shows and Literary Festivals, to name just a few of the events. Since my tenure on the Board, a Guild has been formed, and they have already made their mark by hosting events as well as adding carpet, paint, freshening up the bathrooms, etc. to the interior of the Castle. The contribution of Joslyn Castle members—the membership fees, the attendance at events, bringing guests to the Castle, and spreading the word about the historic building and grounds—have significantly added to the stability of the organization. And if each ONE of us could bring ONE new guest/member to the Castle, imagine how we would grow. You’ll notice that I have not mentioned any names. The reason is that the column would be too long if I listed the names of the many, many people who have contributed over the seven years that I have been involved. The Power of ONE—each person doing something— has added to the progress, growth, beautification, restoration, enlightenment, etc., etc. of what the Castle represents and has brought to the community. With much humility, I thank you for the opportunity to be a part of this organization and I look forward to seeing what each ONE of us brings to the future. This is not enough to ensure that the Castle survives into the future and becomes a healthy, solid, actualized organization that meets its mission to enrich the community. We are planning and working very hard to stabilize the grounds, trees, and gardens, as well as the Castle, Carriage House, and Annex. We are working to try to find innovative ways to create a financially solvent and secure organization. We are working to refine and direct our programming to better meet our mission and serve the community. Not all of this work is glamorous or even newsworthy, but even so we seem to internalize improvements the minute they occur. How many of you can actually still remember the deep 1990s pink carpeting on the stairs? Or remember when there was no perennial garden bed behind the Castle? How about before the gravel path was in place or our majestic trees were pruned? The fact that we have “paid ourselves back” all of our restricted funds that had been spent on operations and remain in the black is headline material for us!! Despite fiscal challenges, we are still offering the Literary Festival annually because it is a great and important program for the Castle, and it fills a gap in arts and humanities offerings in Omaha. I write this as an segue to my request for your help... the Castle’s Annual Giving Campaign is also in its infancy, but the support it can bring is essential for all that we do at the Castle. We need to correct and prevent erosion on the grounds, patch our roadways, buy annuals and perennials for the gardens, purchase mulch for our new trees, keep the office stocked with ink cartridges, and a myriad of other small needs that can be met by your annual gift to the Joslyn Castle. Please be generous and include us in your philanthropic thinking this fall. Every one of our donors is very special to us and every gift is extremely important. We send you the fondest wishes from the Castle family to yours, and we hope that you will have a wonderful holiday season that bring you and your loved ones together. page 2 www.joslyncastle.com A Message from Joslyn Castle Guild Presidents Polo Davis and Francie Prier Meet the Newest Joslyn Castle Staff Members If you stop by the Castle, you may see a couple of new faces. Please join us in welcoming our new Rental and Events Coordinator, Bonnie Martin. She is a recent graduate of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Bonnie is from Schuyler, Nebraska, and is enjoying working with all the wonderful people who rent the Castle for their personal events. Follow Bonnie on the Castle’s new Instagram account and via the Joslyn Castle Wedding Blog: http://joslyncastleweddings. wordpress.com. Our membership drive and the Holiday Boutique are just two of the projects the Castle Guild is currently working on. Membership brochures will be mailed the end of November to those whos membership is expiring. Also, mark your calendars for the second annual Holiday Historic Home Tour and Boutique – Friday, December 5th and Saturday, December 6th. This event is the perfect opportunity to visit beautifully decorated historic homes and either begin or complete your holiday shopping in the warmth and beauty of one of Omaha’s historic treasures – the Joslyn Castle. Cole Hokanson has joined our facilities team as a Facilities Assistant. Cole is a lifelong Omaha resident. You can find him at the Castle keeping everything spotless, completing event set up and tear down, and working the grounds. Many of your favorite retailers from all over the city will be here, including Voila, The Afternoon, Chef2, Togs, Omaha Steaks/ Frontier Soups, Early to Bed, and Bellezza Salon. In addition, we have other popular vendors, MAM Candy, Stella and Dot, Wildtree, K & A Creations from Lincoln, and Family Jewels from Kansas City. Other vendors will be announced soon! We are so excited to have Bonnie and Cole join the Castle family! The weekend begins with a Holiday Patron Party (with preferential shopping at the Boutique!) on December 4th. Tours of the homes take place on Friday and Saturday, and of course shopping continues. From the Archives 2014 has been a landmark year for the Joslyn Castle Archive. All papers are now accessible by subject, architectural plans have been recorded, and an inventory is currently underway to map the Castle’s contents, recording the location, provenance, and status of each piece. We’ve received generous gifts this year: historic photographs, objects, correspondence, and that most precious of legacies, oral histories. We have also assisted other non-profit institutions by providing photographs, cataloguing advice, and expertise on Victorian and Edwardian manners and mores. Most importantly, we’ve begun in-depth research to firmly document the place of the Castle and the Joslyns in the Gilded Age. May next year bring us greater successes, more answers, and more questions! Avoid the malls, visit historic homes and support the Castle; join us for the Holiday Boutique and Historic Homes Tour. We look forward to seeing you! In the meantime, visit the Castle and see all the improvements the Guild has been able to accomplish—new carpet on the main stairs, and new paint and drapes in the ladies’ downstairs bathroom. More improvements are also in the works such as painting the upstairs hall, reupholstering three pieces of furniture on the second floor, and installing a new chandelier in the main stair hall. Join the Guild to become a part of this fun and productive group! S! KUDO The Castle Salutes Sharon McGill & Ron Crampton “You give but little when you give of your possessions. It is when you give of yourself that you truly give.” -Kahlil Gibran If it weren’t for our wonderful volunteers, Sharon McGill and Ron Crampton, the Castle gardens and grounds would not be the exceptional sight they have been this past summer! Sharon and Ron dedicate limitless hours of service to beautify the Joslyn Castle gardens and grounds. From the bountiful Hyacinth Bean trellis to the colorful Peonies dating back to the Joslyns, we couldn’t be more proud to share the Castle with the thousands of people who visit from near and far. Sharon and Ron are known for consistently going above and beyond to provide a spectacular vision for Castle visitors. They work meticulously directing and planning the development and care of the gardens and run ragged keeping up with the beautiful beds and displays. Yearlong, Sharon and Ron can be found on the Castle grounds weekly, and during the summer nearly every day. Their days revolve around weeding, planting, pruning, and sweating! They are both committed and ardent Board members readily providing guidance and direction to the organization for years. Their dedication is overwhelming and their passion is peerless. Acknowledging their ongoing contribution to the Castle is but a small task as compared to their hard work and devotion. page 3 www.joslyncastle.com Year End Building and Grounds Report Visitors to the Castle often see volunteers busy working in the grounds or they may notice repairs or construction projects in progress. This past year has been busy with much activity focused on behind-thescenes repairs as well as many visible improvements. Welcome additions to the Castle grounds include the stone path leading from the lower parking lot to the front door and the various planters on wheels that allow us to control traffic flow for events. The rain this summer has helped make the grounds spectacular, and we cannot thank our loyal garden volunteer crew enough for their hard work. The rain also created some drainage issues that need to be addressed, and we are greatly appreciative of McGill Restoration’s help in addressing these problem areas. House helped provide additional hands to help with grounds and building maintenance. With so much area to maintain, the extra resources are so necessary! We were also thrilled to have a vegetable garden planted and maintained by Big Muddy Urban Farm on the grounds this year. We hope this will be an ongoing partnership. Tim McGill is assisting with the replacement of the roof on the Carriage House. Slate, similar to the original, has been selected and we are anxious for the work to begin! Inside the Carriage House, the basement was cleaned and organized and is now available for rent. The 500 square foot space would make an ideal office location for a small business. Terry Hughes Tree Service completed an Arbor Day project at the Castle, with our consulting arborist, Phil Pierce, to trim trees and plant a new Magnolia on Arbor Day. It was a wonderful gift that ensures we are doing all we can to protect our precious trees for years to come. Volunteers from the Summer Works Program and the Santa Monica A dishwasher has been installed in the kitchen thanks to Annette Huff’s generous donation. The Castle basement has been cleaned and organized, allowing us to better store and maintain important supplies. 2014 Program Summary This year the Castle played host to many successful annual events, and started some new programming as well! Love was in the air at the Joslyn Castle in February! The Castle had three romantic programs for visitors. First, Food of the Gods: The History of Chocolate presentation on the 8th kicked off the month and included a delicious chocolate sampling by local chocolatier, The Cordial Cherry. Jill Anderson, Amanda DeBoer, and Kenneth Bé joined us at the Castle on February 11th for “Heart’s Desire: Words and Music from the Age of Shakespeare.” This was a special performance of dramatic readings from scenes of Shakespeare accompanied by songs for voice and lute by Elizabethan composers. The Castle hosted Valentine’s Dinners on the 14th. The night featured cellist David Downing, a catered meal, and roses for attendees. Twenty-seven couples attended including new visitors and board members. We are already working on Dinners for 2015! The Munroe-Meyer Guild Garden Walk brought 1,500 guests on June 8th when the Castle served as the vendor site for the walk. The grounds were filled with blooming flowers and a bloom of activity as vendors set up across the grounds selling their springtime wares. Tours remained popular throughout the summer. Our new Tuesday and Thursday Public Tours were patronized by 247 guests. “Summer Fun” sponsored by The Peter Kiewit Foundation, brought 280 students to the Castle for a tour, sack lunch, art project, and scavenger hunt on the Castle grounds. Who can think of the summer without the Joslyn Castle Car Classic coming to mind? This year’s show featured over 50 classic vehicles and attracted 1,000 attendees. Over 30 volunteers helped make the show a success. We kicked off the Lynhurst Lecture Series on February 9th. Amanda Lange, Curator of Interiors at Historic Deerfield, spoke about understanding how to develop an informed and discriminating sense in her lecture Connoisseurship: What Makes Something Good? The 12th annual Murder Mystery Dinner Theater took place February 20th–22nd. In “For Killing Out Loud,” a new play written by our own Coleen Fogarty, guests were taken back to 1913, one year after the sinking of the Titanic to solve a mystery involving a widow and her jewels. The sellout shows raised over $15,000 for the Castle and showcased the talents of the Joslyn Castle Players. Join us for the next murder this coming February at New Orleans Mardi Gras in the 1970’s in “Mattress Mayhem.” March and April saw an influx of tours, including Violet’s World tours. This children’s tour, tailored for third to fourth graders, gave students a glimpse into the life as a child in the 1900’s which included learning about toys and common household items found in the discovery trunks. This spring the Castle hosted Hal France’s series “For the Love of It” in the Joslyn’s Music room. These evenings explored the complexities of opera ballads with live opera performances that resonated beautifully throughout the Castle spaces. Paracon, a paranormal investigative group, partnered with the Castle once again to offer participants an opportunity to learn about investigations and participate, first hand, in an investigation. Both sessions were very well attended. As this newsletter goes to press, our Brandywine Valley Trip to Delaware and Pennsylvania is underway and we are also preparing for what will likely be our best literary festival to date, Shadows at the Castle: Bram Stoker’s Dark Vision! Stoker’s works have provided ample fodder to pull together a terrifying and mystifying series of events, aptly set around Halloween, including a Red Cross Blood Drive, Nosferatu on the green, an exhibit by the Durham Museum, a Drama Duet featuring The Jewel of the Seven Stars and Dracula: The Journal of Jonathan Harker, lectures on Stoker and the Romanian origins of the legends, a music performance directed by Hal France, and finally, the Vampyre Ball! page 4 www.joslyncastle.com Program News —Upcoming Events— 2014 Miracle on Farnam “Joslyn Castle Holidays” “Where the past is the present and the future!” Enjoy a window-sized replica of the winter wonderland that envelops the Joslyn Castle during the holidays with over 5.5 acres of snow covered trees dripping sparkling icicles and crisp vistas of laden meadows with shrubs bowing to the earth under their burden of fresh snow.
