WORLD CLASS MULTISPORT RACING IN SHELBY COUNTY Shelby County and the City of Pelham will host the first-ever Nissan Xterra Southeast Championship and accompanying festivities June 9-11 at Oak Mountain State Park. The off-road triathlon is comprised of three disciplines including a 1.5-kilometer (0.93-mile) swim in Double Oak Lake, followed by a 30k (18.6-miles) mountain bike that traverses rolling hills, stream crossings and rock-strewn paths, and a 10k (6.2 miles) trail run that leads competitors through the woods and back on singletrack routes. Professionals will compete in Pelham for a $20,000 prize purse and earn points towards the U.S. series' $70,000 purse. XTERRA is about more than just racing. The weekend is filled with events for outdoor enthusiasts and their families including the XTERRA Scramble off-road trail runs, XTERRA Duathlon, the Nissan Kids Base Camp with free activities for all kids, a Paul Mitchell professional hair Cut-a-thon for charity, climbing wall, free clinics taught by the pros, an expo area with music and displays and more. The race will also be held in conjunction with the Buster Britton Memorial road triathlon on June 10 and those athletes who choose to compete in both the Buster Britton and the XTERRA race will be entered in the "Bama Slamma Double Competition". The XTERRA Village is open Saturday, June 10 & Sunday, June 11, and admission to the event is free. THE EXPO Feel the “buzz” at the exposition area as athletes and outdoor enthusiasts bounce to music while checking out the latest off-road multisport products, displays and demonstrations. While you’re there sample the great food and find out why the Nissan Xterra has “Everything you need and nothing you don’t.” You can also get a professional haircut at the Paul Mitchell Cut-a-thon, and there’s even the NEVADA Climbing Wall for the kids, or the kid in you! The XTERRA Village is home to all the outdoor action and the best place to watch the race! The Expo is open from 10:30am-to-5pm on Saturday and 9am-3pm on Sunday. Founded to help physically challenged athletes reach their athletic goals, the non-profit Challenged Athletes Foundation is the official charity of the Paul Mitchell Cut-a-thon at each stop on Nissan Xterra Champioinship Series. Stylists will cut hair from 10am-2pm on Sunday. CHALLENGED ATHLETES FOUNDATION 8 OFF-R ROAD SPORTS FESTIVAL XTERRA OAK MOUNTAIN SCRAMBLE 5K AND 10K A BENEFIT FOR THE LAKESHORE FOUNDATION Forget boring old road runs, the XTERRA Oak Mountain Scramble trail runs are crooked, bumpy, muddy and gutsy and sure to get your heart rate going! Test your physical and mental skills as you get down and dirty, ducking under branches and hopping over rocks. It's you versus Mother Nature, running on the same paths that the XTERRA Duathlon and Championship racers will tackle and it's for a good cause as proceeds benefit the Lakeshore Foundation (lakeshore.org) - a not-for-profit organization located in Birmingham that promotes independence for persons with physically disabling conditions and opportunities to pursue active healthy lifestyles. Friday night, June 9 @ 6pm XTERRA DUATHLON Some guys and gals just don't swim and if you're one of them, this race is for you. Competitors will start with a 3k (1.9 mile) off-road trail run, follow with a 15k (9.3 mile) mountain bike, and finish up with a 5k (3.1 mile) scramble. It's open to athletes of all ages and skill levels, and you can even race it as a two-or-three person relay team. The rugged off-road trails are identical to those being used for the main event. The mountain bike course offers plenty of challenge, with leg-burning climbs and twisting, technical downhills. Saturday at 1pm 9 OFF-R ROAD SPORTS FESTIVAL XTERRA UNIVERSITY Presented by Paul Mitchell Learn the art of XTERRA from the best off-road multisport athletes on the planet. XTERRA U is a must for firsttimers and anyone looking to sharpen their skills in swimming, mountain biking, trail running, and nutrition. The pros will even break down into course specifics and answer any and all questions. Best part is, these handson clinics are FREE. Attend all the lessons or pick your discipline (see schedule for start times); - Mountain Biking with Jamie Whitmore and Mike Vine - Trail Running with Jenny Tobin and Brent McMahon - Swimming with Janae Pritchett and Andrew Noble - The Art of XTERRA (Transition, Nutrition, Training, and Course Tips) with expert panel of Candy Angle, Seth Wealing, Josiah Middaugh, and Melanie McQuaid. NISSAN XTERRA SUV SHOW & ADVENTURE Proud Nissan Xterra Owners get the chance to show off their SUV in the middle of the compound area on Saturday. Judges will recognize winners in three categories: best stock, best custom, and XTERRA lifestyle. Owners then go an off-road adventure where lunch awaits them at the end of the road. 10 XTERRA RACING XTERRA SPORT Jumping into a full-distance XTERRA the first time out can be intimidating – that’s why organizers created the XTERRA Sport race. The sport competition uses the same course, but cuts each discipline in half. This race is ideal for newcomers, offering a great introduction to the rigors of XTERRA. 750-METER SWIM 15-KILOMETER MOUNTAIN BIKE 5-KILOMETER TRAIL RUN Sport Start: 8:00 a.m. on Sunday RELAY TEAM COMPETITION Athletes can put together a group of two or three people and challenge the course together in either the sport or championship race. Relay team competitions, already huge in XTERRA races overseas, are becoming more and more popular in the U.S. It's a fun way to spend an afternoon with your partner or friend or another family member. The XTERRA crew will even help pair up individuals, so if you need help completing a relay team email info@xterraplanet.com and we'll find the missing link to your squad. THE MAIN EVENT At the Nissan Xterra Southeast Championship professional athletes vie for thousands in cash while amateurs race for points towards regional standings and spots into the Nissan Xterra USA and World Championship races. Read on for information on how the series works, a course description, pro purse distribution, last year’s winners and more... Championship Start: 9:30 a.m. on Sunday 11 THE COURSE Thanks in large part to BUMP – the Birmingham Urban Mountain Pedalers, the mountain biking trails at Oak Mountain State Park have provided world-class fun for locals and visiting riders for years. Now, for the first-time ever in the heart of the South, XTERRA athletes from around the world will get the chance to experience these legendary paths for themselves. The largest park in the Yellowhammer State, Oak Mountain has 52 miles of trails spread among 9,900 lushly forested acres and includes rolling hills, stream crossings and the technical, pine-studded ridges of Double Oak Mountain. The race starts in Double Oak Lake, a long narrow lake with wide sandy beaches. Sport racers swim a 750-meter loop while championship competitors double that for a 1.5k swim The bike course primarily on hard-packed singletrack, will consist of one large loop full of rollers, stream crossings, wooden bridges and a long but gradual climb to the 1,150-foot high point Johnson Mountain – named after former XTERRA competitor and tireless local trail volunteer Bill Johnson. It’s nearly 20 miles worth of rooty and rocky sections for both the Sport and full-distance races. The run course will meander back into the woods on a separate set of singletrack routes before returning to the spectator-friendly start/finish area. It’s 5k for the Sport and 10k for the championship. 12 PRO START LIST The professionals competing in Alabama are among the best mountain bikers and triathletes on the planet. With the new venue at Oak Mountain State Park it’s hard to tell if the course will favor any particular athlete, however, you can count on these guys chasing for the title: MEN’S FAVORITES Canadian Olympic triathlete Brent McMahon won the first XTERRA championship of the season in California on May 21 in dominating fashion. The 25-year-old is the fastest swimmer in the sport, is consistently in the top five off the bike, and runs like the wind thus, the ultimate threat. He finished third in the Nissan Xterra World Championship last October behind Frenchman Nicolas Lebrun and Spaniard Eneko Llanos. Neither Lebrun or Llanos will be in ‘Bama, but American Seth Wealing, the runner-up in Cali, will be there and he has set his focus on XTERRA this season for the first-time in years. A world cup regular, Wealing is always at the front of the pack during the swim and has the legs to go fast on the bike and run as well. It would not be surprising to see him finish on top of the pack this season. Josiah Middaugh - the USAT Long Course National Champion, North American Snowshoe Champion, and USAT Winter Triathlon National Champion, was third in California last month - the best low-altitude XTERRA finish of his career. A very fit, 40-year-young XTERRA vet Andrew Noble made a splash in the opener with a 5th place finish, and there’s no doubt he can keep with the chase pack this race. Canadian Mike Vine - who won the XTERRA Mountain Championship last year and was second only to Conrad Stoltz in the US Pro Series standings, was slowed by injuries in Temecula and should be much faster and in contention for the overall at Oak Mountain. Mexico’s Francisco Serrano will be making his XTERRA season debut and don’t count out Dominic Gillen or Justin Thomas. WOMEN FAVORITES It will be the Jamie Whitmore vs. Melanie McQuaid show until someone else can come in and break through consistently. Over the past few years the duo have finished 1-2 in 15 of the last 17 races they’ve both entered, with Whitmore holding a 9-6 advantage (but that doesn’t include Melanie’s Maui win when Jamie was 3rd). Whitmore - the four-time XTERRA US Pro Series Champ - won the first race of the year in California. McQuaid led the race until the first mile of the run - a steep uphill - and held on for second. McQuaid is the only female in XTERRA history to win the world title twice. Candy Angle, the 2002 XTERRA World Champion, finished 3rd in Temecula and will be a contender as always. Jennifer Smith - a Kiwi now living in Colorado - opened some eyes by posting the fastest bike split in Temecula to finish fourth. Melissa Thomas, a perenniel podium perfomer, will be racing in her first U.S. XTERRA this season and has some experience on the Oak Mountain trails which could make a difference. At the end of the regular season the top performers in each of eight regions are invited to compete against other athletes their same age - but from different regions - at the national championship in Nevada on October 1. This year there are 50 races in 32 states across the country, as well as the U.S. Territories of Guam and Saipan. It marks the 10th straight year of expansion for the sport of XTERRA. Here's how the Series works: 1) There are eight regions, determined by a competitor's primary residence at the time of their first race: NORTH EAST (NE) - Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York. MID ATLANTIC (MA) - Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Washington D.C. SOUTH EAST (SE) - Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Florida, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands NORTH CENTRAL (NC) - Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky. SOUTH CENTRAL (SC) - Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Louisiana, Mississippi, Arkansas. MOUNTAIN (MT) - Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Colorado, Utah, Wyoming. NORTH WEST (NW) - Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Alaska. SOUTH WEST (SW) - California, Nevada, Arizona, Hawaii, Guam, Northern Marianas Islands, Pacific Territories. 2) Age Group: "XTERRA Age" is based on a competitor's age on December 31, 2006. Athletes compete in the following age categories: 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60+ (w), 60-64 (m), 65+ (m), and new for 2006 is the Challenged Athletes Division (which is not broken down by age group, simply gender). 3) Series competitors race for points at their choice of 50 events - including Nissan Xterra Points Series (NXPS) races and Nissan Xterra Championship Series (NXCS) races. Competitors are required to race and count points in at least one event in his/her region. Competitors can enter as many events as they'd like, however, they count just their best three finishes. 4) Points are awarded to the top 15 finishers in each age group at each race. If you race at more than one Nissan Xterra Championship event, only the best finish counts at full points. Any other finishes earn points at the same rate as the Nissan Xterra Points Series races. There are two points systems: Nissan Xterra Championship Series: 1st 100 2nd 90 3rd 82 4th 75 5th 69 6th 7th 8th 63 58 53 9th 10th 11th 12th 13th 14th 15th 49 45 41 37 34 31 28 Nissan Xterra Points Series: 1st 75 2nd 67 3rd 61 4th 56 5th 51 6th 7th 8th 47 43 39 9th 10th 11th 12th 13th 14th 15th 36 33 30 27 25 23 21 5) The highest points scorers in each region are invited to compete for a national title at the Nissan Xterra USA Championship in Nevada (qualifying spots based on chart below). The competitor with the most points in their age group in each XTERRA Region earns the title of XTERRA Regional Champion, and wins a custom racing jersey. A season-ending blow-out like no other, the World Championship is the culmination of a worldwide series of races held in Saipan, South Africa, Germany, Czech Republic, Spain, New Zealand, Austria, Italy, France, Denmark, England, Japan, Brazil, and the United States. The race course, considered one of XTERRA's toughest and most grueling, will consist of a 1.5-kilometer roughwater swim at Makena Beach, a grueling 30kilometer mountain bike on the slopes of Haleakala, and an 11-kilometer trail run. Access to this legendary course is permitted once a year - on race day. Conditions change radically from year to year, diminishing the advantage to repeat competitors, and perpetuating the course's stature as among the most intimidating in the series. The maxed-out field is limited to 500 competitors, who represent the best offroad, multisport athletes on the planet. It is a "winner take all" race, with one of the richest pro purses in multisport at $125,000, and it is awarded solely on the basis of the Maui performance. Since this race is a stand-alone event, it offers a unique opportunity to competitors. Even those who have had a less than stellar season, are given an opportunity to redeem themselves and earn the coveted title of XTERRA World Champion. Last year Nicolas LeBrun of France captured the men’s championship and Melanie McQuaid from Canada won her second world championship in three years. A special prime, the Hawaiian Airlines Double, will pay $2,500 to the man and woman with the fastest combined Hawaii Ironman and XTERRA World Championship time. Only eight days and a narrow channel of ocean separate the two events, which each year attract a growing number of endurance athletes. In 2005, Canada’s Peter Reid won the men’s double and Australia’s Kate Major won the women’s double. CBS will be there to televise all the action for a one-hour "CBS Sports Spectacular" which will air on the weekend of the Super Bowl in 2007. 37 QUALIFYING FOR MAUI Amateur athletes can qualify for the XTERRA World Championship by finishing in one of the 34 qualifying spots available at each Global Tour Championship event or one of the 36 qualifying spots (see below) at any of the six Nissan Xterra Championship Series races in Temecula, Pelham, Richmond, Milwaukee, Ogden, or Lake Tahoe (this includes Challenged division not yet offered overseas). There are also a limited number of atlarge slots available early in the year. There was passion in the eyes of the competitors and an unwavering feeling that XTERRA was destined to become a lifestyle…a movement. We believed. So much so we restructured the company to keep it growing. Look at where XTERRA is today… - The first piece of expansion started with more races, a lot more. From one to 100+ in 17 countries in a 10-year span including a 50-stop U.S. series for amateurs and a full-blown European Tour. - We initiated a series of XTERRA Camps across the U.S. to help prepare athletes to race and get them started towards an active lifestyle. To that end, we offer up half-distance races for newcomers at our major events, plus the chance to race as part of a relay team. We also offer free XTERRA University clinics taught by our top pros. - We dish out a half-million dollars in prize money to attract some of the world's leading multisport athletes and garner the attention of national and international media. - We make champions. In the U.S. series alone we recognize 184 amateur regional champions and 22 amateur national champions. - We get kids involved wherever we go with the Nissan Kids Base Camp. It's a free schedule of events with running and bike races, clinics on how to be safe, climbing walls, and other fun games. The notion is to get kids outdoors and active. - We put the lifestyle on display for millions to see with XTERRA TV. A dozen shows reaching into homes all over the world with inspiring images of fun activities in great places. - We became consumer friendly. First with XTERRA Gear - equipment designed for rugged competition. Then, with races in more than a dozen countries and nearly every state in the U.S., we knew traveling was part of the game so we selected Travelocity to power XTERRA Travel on our website. We recently re-created XTERRAPlanet.com, which is soon to be a complete resource for any outdoor adventure. - With the introduction of the XTERRA Foundation - we gave XTERRA heart. The XTERRA Foundation is a non-profit specifically designed to provide educational opportunities for at-risk kids. - We've opened the doors for runners, not just multisport athletes, with the XTERRA Scramble Trail Run Series. This year there are more than 30 5k and 10k fun runs reaching into 18 major metropolitan cities in America - providing more chances to participate in the healthy, active, outdoors lifestyle. - The movement is growing rapidly, and has extended to events like the Nevada Passage Wide Open (an adventure competition (and TV show) in Nevada created for the everyday warrior). 38 2006 XTERRA Scramble Trail Runs Series Schedule Date Race Location Descriptor April 1 XTERRA Sunset Scramble Saipan, CNMI In conjunction with XTERRA Saipan Championship April 23 XTERRA Otter Creek Scramble Louisville, KY Ohio Valley Points Race #1 May 13 XTERRA Spring Stomp Indianapolis, IN Ohio Valley Points Race #2 May 13 XTERRA Malibu Creek Trail Challenge Los Angeles, CA SoCal Points Race #1 May 20 XTERRA Vail Lake Scramble Temecula, CA In conjunction with XTERRA West Championship May 27 XTERRA Little Cottonwood Creek Scramble Salt Lake City, UT Utah Points Race #1 June 3 XTERRA Freedom Hill Scramble Detroit, MI Ohio Valley Points Race #3 June 10 XTERRA Oak Mountain Scramble Pelham, AL In conjunction with XTERRA Southeast Championship June 17 XTERRA James River Scramble Richmond, VA In conjunction with XTERRA East Championship July 8 XTERRA Soldier Hollow Scramble Midway, UT Utah Points Race #2 July 15 XTERRA Stump Jumpin’ Trail Stomp Scramble Lawrence, KS Midwest Points Race #1 July 15 XTERRA Hartwood Scramble Pittsburgh PA Ohio Valley Points Race #4 July 29 XTERRA Mountain View Scramble Salt Lake City, UT Utah Points Race #3 Aug. 5 XTERRA Milwaukee Scramble Milwaukee, WI In conjunction with XTERRA Midwest Championship Aug. 6 XTERRA China Camp Scramble San Rafael, CA Independent Aug. 13 XTERRA Boordy Vineyards Scramble Baltimore, MD Chesapeake Bay Points Race #1 Aug. 18 XTERRA Golden Spike Scramble Ogden, UT Utah Points Race #4 Aug. 26 XTERRA Pain Terrain Scramble Kansas City, KS Midwest Points Race #2 Sept. 1 XTERRA Towson Block Party Scramble Baltimore, MD Chesapeake Bay Points Race #2 Sept. 9 XTERRA Dot Trail Trot Scramble Kansas City, MO Midwest Points Race #3 Sept. 30 XTERRA Scramble Washington, DC Chesapeake Bay Points Race #3 Sept. 30 XTERRA Serrano Canyon Scramble Los Angeles, CA SoCal Series #2 Sept. 30 XTERRA Nevada Scramble Lake Tahoe, NV In conjunction with XTERRA USA Championship Oct. 7 XTERRA Long Branch Scramble Cincinnati, OH Ohio Valley Points Race #5 Oct. 21 XTERRA North Boundary Blitz Scramble Knoxville, TN Knoxville Points Race #5 Oct. 22 XTERRA Boston Mills Scramble Akron, OH Ohio Valley Points Race #6 Oct. 28 XTERRA Bobcat Scramble Athens, OH Ohio Valley Points Race #7 In conjunction with XTERRA Mountain Championship Oct. 28 XTERRA La Jolla Canyon Legend Scramble Los Angeles, CA SoCal Series #3 Oct. 28 XTERRA Makena Beach Scramble Maui, HI In conjunction with XTERRA World Championship Nov. 4 XTERRA Sycamore Scramble Datyon, OH Ohio Valley Points Race #8 Nov. 5 XTERRA Heritage Park Scramble Athens, GA Independent Nov. 11 XTERRA Boston Mills Scramble II Akron, OH Ohio Valley Points Race #9 Nov. 18 XTERRA Alum Creek Scramble Columbus, OH Ohio Valley Scramble Championship Nov. 25 XTERRA Topanga Turkey Trot Scramble Los Angeles, CA SoCal Series #4 TBD XTERRA Scramble Washington, DC Chesapeake Bay Points Race #4 *tentative as of 3/23/06 39 XTERRA BEGINNINGS IT REALLY STARTED in the late '80's. That's when Tom Kiely (CEO of TEAM Unlimited - owners and producers of XTERRA) was tasked with creating more publicity for the Waikiki Oahu Visitors Association. His idea was sports TV. "First, sports is part of our life blood in Hawaii, and second, what looks good on TV? - The beaches and the ocean," explained Kiely. The concept was pretty simple. TV sports and entertainment is one of the biggest industries in the world. The travel industry is THE BIGGEST industry in the world. Bring those two together in programming, and you've got something big. So he came up with the idea for the Hawaiian International Ocean Challenge - a lifeguard skills competition that attracted water safety specialists from Australia, New Zealand, California, and of course, Hawaii. Then, he forged a relationship with ESPN - the worldwide leader in sports. In 1990 the Ocean Challenge was broadcast on ESPN, and millions of viewers were exposed to the beauty of Waikiki - the sun, sand, and crystal clear blue water of the Pacific Ocean. Subsequently, this is where David "Kahuna" Nicholas enters the picture - as "race director." "So we get into producing the Ocean Challenge," says Kiely. "And now I'm thinking I've got all these athletes and TV crews and if it costs me this much to produce one show, it'll cost less for another, and even less for a third." ESPN approves two more shows (Waikiki King's Race and Diamond Head Wahine Windsurfing Classic) and in 1991 TEAM Unlimited produces three events and three TV shows. The concept is working, and Hawaii is reaping the benefits of the outdoor exposure the shows are generating. "So the next year (1992) we produced seven Hawaiian Sports Adventure Shows…multiple segments, different stories, great scenics, and 30-minutes of entertaining, good fun stuff," said Kiely. Those seven shows were in addition to the Ocean Challenge and a few others televised events, including the inaugural Tour O' Hawaii. "Now that was a great event," said Nicholas - now the managing director of the XTERRA Global Tour. "The Tour O' Hawaii happened before professional cyclists were allowed to compete in the Olympics so the top riders from every country kept their amateur status so they could race in the Olympics. We just missed Lance because he signed with Motorola, but we had George Hincapie, Jan Ulrich, Tyler Hamilton, and dozens of others. Looking back, the 40 field was a who's who of international cycling." A few years later the Olympics allowed pros to compete, road cycling in the U.S. was on the decline, and the Tour O' Hawaii was no more. At the same time, however, mountain biking was taking off. So in 1995, in addition to 12 other TV shows and several events, TEAM Unlimited produced the Hawaiian Mountain Tour. In doing so Nicholas and mountain bike Hall-of-Famer Dean Crandall established the rules and held the first-ever mountain bike stage race. This is also where many of the XTERRA greats first appeared. The likes of Ned Overend, Shari Kain, Melanie McQuaid, Steve Larsen, Mike Kloser, Leslie Tomlinson, and host of others were taking part in the Hawaiian Mountain Tour. Now these races took place at Kualoa Ranch on Oahu, where the Koolau mountain range meets the ocean, and the story goes that after their races the mountain bikers would ride down to the beach and jump in the water. It sparked a thought…why not have a mountain bike triathlon? By 1996 TEAM Unlimited had produced more than 50 shows and sporting events, and while the idea of an off-road triathlon was enticing - who'd pay for it? Almost simultaneously, the Aston Hotel in Maui (now the Wailea Marriott Resort) was shopping for a good idea for their grand opening and the Maui Visitors Bureau was looking for a new event that could tell a different story about Maui's south shore because all the exposure up to that point was golf. Well, what better way to show off the hotel and south shore than 1) starting the race at this beautiful beach in front of the sponsor hotel, 2) follow a race that covers 21 miles of terrain with two dozen camera's, and 3) put it on TV for the whole world to see? Add a phone call to Kiely from a friendly competitor in the marketplace (to remain unnamed) inquiring on the very subject of producing an off-road triathlon and you have all the main ingredients for XTERRA's birth. Kiely likes to define luck as the "intersection of opportunity and activity." He recalls bringing Nicholas and VP of Marketing Janet Clark into his office. "Look, I said, so-and-so called me and said that they were thinking about doing an off-road tri and if they do, then we're forever second, so we have to be the first ones to do it. I immediately called Aston and the MVB and said O.K., I've got the idea, here's the thing, bing, bang, boom," said Kiely. "And that's what got us started in XTERRA." TEAM UNLIMITED TEAM Unlimited is a Hawaii-based television events and marketing company, founded in 1988. It owns and produces XTERRA, and in 2006 more than 100 events will be held in 17 countries. It all started with 123 competitors one afternoon in Maui, and has since evolved into the most prestigious off-road multisport race in the world. There are now more than 20,000 competitors, ages 13-65, from all 50 states and more than 35 countries.
