NATIONAL AUTOMOBILE DEALERS CHARITABLE FOUNDATION
The
Chairman’s Message
“The artist sees the picture before he ever paints it!” Those profound words continue to be of great interest! The Ambassadors listed on pages 2 and 3 help
emphasize the role of the artist. They, too, see some beautiful pictures in what they continue to do.
Furthermore, look at pages 4 through 8 and you will appreciate the outstanding charities Ambassadors support
in their communities.
A few years ago, Ambassador Joy A. Sanchez of East Lansing, Mich., read a powerful article regarding a
Wounded Warrior activity in the great state of Montana. It sponsors fishing expeditions for those brave
men and women in the Wounded Warrior program. Her request inspired the board of trustees to authorize
Ambassador gifts to Wounded Warrior programs.
Quite frankly, this was an easy call in view of what the Frank E. McCarthy Memorial Fund has been doing
for the past three years. Originally, the McCarthy Memorial Fund, in partnership with Canine Companions
for Independence, donated two beautifully trained dogs for children with disabilities each year for more than
ten years. Now, we find the McCarthy Memorial Fund donating four dogs a year—two to children and two to
Wounded Warriors.
So, one good idea leads to another. As a matter of fact, it is my intention to make an Ambassador gift to
the golfing program for Wounded Warriors at American Lake Veterans Hospital. Recently, the hospital broke
ground for “the new Nicklaus nine.” The legendary golfing great serves as the Honorary Chairman.
The Ambassadors’ gifts previously referenced account
for more than $233,000. Please join me in saluting all the
Ambassadors. There’s never been another activity like it. Parents
and grandparents are becoming enthused to the extent that they
are naming their children and grandchildren as Ambassadors.
Allow me again, please, to remind everyone that anyone is
eligible. Once NADCF receives the $10,000 for enrollment, the
gifting aspect continues in your community in perpetuity!
Consider becoming an Ambassador and painting beautiful
“pictures” for your community. To the nearly 700 Ambassadors:
continue the good job of being “the artist” and we thank you
ever so much! Sincerely,
Robert P. Mallon

Foundation Ambassadors
T
he Ambassadors program named 43 new Ambassadors in 2013, bringing the total number to 660. “Dealers in communities across the country are utilizing
the Ambassadors program as part of their already generous
charitable giving,” said Bob Mallon, chairman of the NADA
Foundation.
Sixty-three of the Foundation’s Ambassadors are classified as
Ambassadors of Distinction, which means they have donated
three or more gifts of $10,000 to the program and are eligible
to present $2,000 every year in perpetuity.
Dave Conant, a new-car dealer in Newport Beach, Calif.,
became an Ambassador of Distinction after contributing an
additional $50,000 last year to name five Ambassadors for his
family members.
The Dave Mungenast Automotive Family dealership group in
St. Louis named its eighth Ambassador in 2013. “The Ambassadors program reflects the Mungenast Family’s four-decadelong commitment to contributing to the community they work
in,” said Don Levin, senior advisor of the dealership group.
Several state and metro dealer associations are also recognized
as Ambassadors of Distinction, including the Ohio, Columbus and Toledo groups, which have collectively contributed
$90,000 to the program.

To become an Ambassador, a dealer, company, association or
individual pledges a tax-deductible donation of $10,000 to the
Foundation in their own name or in recognition of loved ones,
living or deceased. Ambassadors are then eligible to present
$1,500 grants every three years in perpetuity.
Each year, more than $250,000 in grants are donated to organizations in the public or private sector, supporting a variety
of causes from emergency and medical services to supporting
educational programs. In 2013, 218 Ambassadors were eligible
to present grants to organizations of their choice.

Supporting Canine Companions
S
ince 2002, the Frank E. McCarthy
Memorial Fund has contributed
$220,000 to Canine Companions
for Independence. This has placed 22
skilled service dogs with disabled children
and wounded veterans.
Retired Army Sgt. Sam Cila, with
his service dog, Gilian.
To support the Canine Companions program, ADESA auctioned a 2011 HarleyDavidson Fat Boy during the 2013 NADAATD Convention and Expo in Orlando.
Auto industry consultant Joe Verde was
the top bidder for the motorcycle, with a
bid of $26,000.
This was the second consecutive year
ADESA held a live auction during the convention. In 2012, Massachusetts new-car
dealer Barry Lundgren took home a 2010
Harley-Davidson Softail Deluxe with a
winning bid of $18,750.
“I applaud ADESA on another successful
auction to raise money for a worthwhile
cause that has such a special meaning to
the NADA Foundation,” said Bob Mallon,
chairman of the NADA Charitable Foundation, which presented Canine Companions for Independence with $40,000
in 2013.
Frank E. McCarthy
served as NADA
president for more
than 30 years.
In 2013, Joe Verde
bid $26,000 for the
2011 Harley-Davidson
Fat Boy. Proceeds
benefited the Wounded
Warriors Initiative of
Canine Companions
for Independence.

Emergency Relief Fund
T
he NADA Foundation’s Emergency Relief Fund contributed
$40,000 to 30 Oklahoma dealership employees affected by the devastating
tornado that hit the state in May 2013.
The fund provides financial assistance to
dealership employees affected by natural
disasters.
“The outpouring of support and contributions from across the country was tremendous,” said Steve Rankin, Oklahoma Auto
Dealers Association president. “We were
very grateful.”
In addition to NADA’s contribution, the
fund received $42,900 in donations, including $5,000 from both the Houston and
North Carolina dealer groups and $2,500
from William Fox, 2014 NADA vice chairman and a new-car dealer in Auburn, N.Y.
In 2013, the Emergency Relief Fund also
provided assistance to employees in Texas affected by the fertilizer plant explosion
and flood victims in Colorado, Iowa and
West Virginia.
Since the fund was established in 1992,
more than $5 million has been provided to
over 8,700 dealership employees in need.

Programs
Medical Grants
Road Safety G rants
or more than 37 years, new-car and -truck dealers have
donated Little Annie cardiopulmonary resuscitation
(CPR) training manikins to hospitals, police and fire departments, and schools across the country from the Medical
Grants program of the NADA Foundation. In 2012, over 100
training units were donated to organizations in 19 states.
he Road Safety Grant
Program provides dealers up to $500 to sponsor a
safety event at their dealerships. The grants are provided as a matching contribution for expenses incurred
by dealers.
F
Since the program’s inception in 1975, more than 4,600
manikins with a value of about $3 million have been donated
to organizations in all 50 states and Washington, D.C.
T
Dealers can use these grants
to start programs to install
child passenger safety seats,
promote teen and senior driver safety, educate consumers
about rural road safety, and combat distracted driving.
The Legacy Program
T
he Foundation’s Legacy Program is an exceptional
vehicle for deliberative estate planning and conveys
the vital community service role that franchised new-car
and -truck dealers render for the benefit of so many citizens.
Initially, $1.6 million was raised through the Foundation’s
Survivors Relief Fund. Since its inception, the fund has
provided $648,000 in scholarship aid to 105 students.
The Legacy Program was established 12 years ago to recognize those who have committed to the Foundation in
their estate planning. It is helpful to people who wish to
take advantage of the Foundation’s 501(c)(3) status. Specific designations may be proposed by donors in their plans
or a pledge to the Legacy
Program can be made
to any of the Charitable
Foundation’s programs.
In this way, members
of the retail automotive
family are given a unique
opportunity to make bequests that celebrate their
life’s work.
Joseph J. Sanchez Grants
John P. Winston, Sr., Grants
n 1985, the Joseph J. Sanchez Memorial
Fund was established to honor the memory of the former vice president and general manager of the Oldsmobile Division of
General Motors and first president of Saturn Corporation. Grants worth $528,000
have been dispersed as of 2013.
n 1990 the John P. Winston, Sr., Memorial Fund was established for the study of
ethics discipline. The fund honors NADA’s
late corporate secretary, an accomplished
attorney who was dedicated to ethical
practices and who was a deeply religious
family man. Grants worth $490,000 have been dispersed
as of 2013.
Survivors Relief Fund
T
he Foundation was among the first organizations to
support 9/11 families with contributions to Scholarship America, making it possible for the sons and daughters
of Americans killed or permanently disabled during the attacks in New York, Washington, D.C., and Shanksville, Pa.,
to attend college.
