On Friday, September 21st Esi Elmas (ÜAA ‘86), Communications and Development Coordinator for SEV (Sağlık ve Eğitim Vakfı) arrived at the FABSIT office for a week of collaboration with FABSIT Executive Director, Paula Dinçer. The purpose: to learn how FABSIT can best help SEV reach out to alumni and friends in the United States with the news and needs of our schools and hospital in Turkey. The week included a visit to the campus of Phillips Academy in Andover, MA for three separate meetings with their Director of Alumni Relations, Debbie Murphy; Director of Communications, Tracy Sweet; and their Secretary of the Academy (development director), Peter Ramsey. These helpful meetings were made possible by FABSIT Treasurer Roxanne Scott Barry (ÜAA’66) and —Peter Ramsey, Secretary of the student advisor at Phillips Academy. She and her Academy, Phillips Academy, Andover, MA husband Don Barry, long-time member of the mathematics faculty at Phillips, and both former teachers at Tarsus American College, are also experts on the American Board history associated with Phillips Academy. It was here that the foundation for the schools and hospital in Turkey was laid 200 years ago! See page five for more on our shared history. “Educational giving has moved from the domain of charity to philanthropy. Today we encourage our donors to see it as an investment.” _______________________________________________________________________________________________ ACI update from Director Todd Cuddington The start of the year at ACI... The first term is now in full swing at the American Collegiate Institute with a number of the traditional activities having taken place with the same energy and excitement of past years. The annual Prep Orientation program, the MOODS celebration, and CUMHURİYET Bayram Student Marching — all symbols of the fall school term and clear indicators that the school year is fully underway. This year, ACI has grown with the success of our Residential Program. A combined total of 96 boarding students in the boys’ and girls’ dormitories means that the American Collegiate Institute is now a national school in the truest sense. Students from every region of the country are now represented at ACI, as our program’s success stories are shared by parents and students in their home communities across the country. Our dormitory program has added an enriched 2-hour evening study hall program, complemented by two teachers supporting the dorm students with their mathematics and English studies. Additionally our weekend activities have increased, emphasizing the benefits of a balanced academic and social program for successful dorm life. In keeping with the American Collegiate Institute’s commitment to providing a university preparatory high school program, the school hosted its inaugural Education Day on October 8, 2012. The event brought together 53 international universities from the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, European countries and Australia. Additionally, 10 universities from Turkey attended the event to promote local postRepresentatives from universities secondary school options within around the world come to meet Turkey. The new campus construction project is in full swing and the pilings for the foundations are almost all in place. Between the heavy machinery moving around the construction site, trucks delivering building supplies, along with school buses and parents dropping off and picking up children, all available space along the narrow streets next to the school is needed just to accommodate the demands of increased traffic. This is good news, however, if one considers that the project’s completion date for most of the buildings (elementary school, TAC boarding facility, gymnasium, auditorium, cafeteria, and the Sadık Paşa building, restored to provide a school library) is set for September 2013. Check TAC’s website for updates on the construction. 2 New facilities construction well under way at TAC Speaking of TAC’s website, in order to increase the speed of communication, TAC will be relying more and more on electronic media to keep parents, alumni, and friends upto-date with news from the school. This summer, the school, in cooperation with the SEV Foundation published its second edition of the biannual, bilingual magazine “TAC Life” which covers activities and events at TAC from January through June 2012. Although this print edition is a wonderful collection of articles and pictures documenting the first half of this calendar year which will certainly be of value historically, it does not have the speed and flexibility to reach a wider public quickly. Therefore, in addition to this publication, the school’s website www.tac.k12.tr, Facebook page Student speakers (Tarsus Amerikan Koleji), and Twitter will be used to help keep on Opening Day interested persons informed of current events. Continued on page 6... ÜAA update from Director Eric Trujillo I am pleased to share with you the important highlights and events from Üsküdar American Academy. At ÜAA Brownie Day... In June the school and the SEV Board of Directors agreed to begin the authorization Childrens’ Book Writers (left to right) Ayfer Ünal ‘71, Gülsevin process for the International Baccalaureate Kıral ’77, Serpil Ural ’64, Sara Diploma Program (IBDP) for ÜAA. The Şahinkanat ’84, Tülin authorization process will take up to 18 Kozikoğlu ’86 months for the school to begin teaching the Below, ÜAA 2000 alums with two-year curriculum. We plan to have our Ece and Derya Kara and baby first IBDP graduates in 2017. For those who are unfamiliar with the IBDP; it as an academically rigorous two-year curriculum taught in the junior and senior year with a focus on thinking critically and creatively. The program also includes a service learning component for the students in the IBDP. The IB diploma is recognized by over 1,800 universities in nearly 140 countries throughout the world. An IB diploma holder may receive scholarships or advanced course credit under conditions specified by each higher education institution. We are very excited to become an IB World School and we know that our students will thrive in the program. We took in 168 new preparatory students this year, split evenly with fifty percent boys and fifty percent girls. The school has followed this entrance policy for the Continued on page 7... ______________________________________________________________________________________________ SAH update SAH supports the Red Crescent—those who best know the value of blood Known for its support of social responsibility projects, SEV American Hospital continued its support of the Red Crescent with a blood drive among hospital personnel and their families. SAH Medical Director Dr. Y. Sermet Kileci launched the campaign by being the first to give blood. He said SAH is trying to meet the demand for blood in the region by running these drives twice a year. “Blood is the only medicine that is not manufactured. On behalf of the hospital I thank everyone who has donated blood. Our donations of blood to the Red Crescent will always continue.” (Sağlık Dünyası, November 28, 2012) Advances at SAH in breast and cervical cancer care... A First for SAH: Thanks to Surgeon Dr. Miraç İlker Pala, coordinator of the SAH General Surgical Clinic’s Breast Disease Unit, and plastic surgery specialist Dr. Recep Anlatıcı, reconstructive surgery at SAH is now done at the time of the mastectomy so women don’t have to fight the psychological issues associated with the loss of the breast. Both can be planned at the same time combining oncological principles with reconstruction principles, and new prostheses that eliminate old concerns. (Güncel Gaziantep, June 29, 2012) Dr. Ali Kolusarı, who joined the SAH Gynecology and Obstetrics team in October 2012, is developing SAH cervical cancer screening programs for the age groups of highest disease incidence (35-39, 60-69). As is often the case in disease prevention, cervical cancer screening is not as widely available in the developing world as it is in developed countries, and the incidence of disease is five times greater. With screening, the number of patients decreases dramatically. (Gaziantep Express, November 1, 2012) Dr. Ali Kolusarı 3 news from the FABSIT Family………………………. "East Meets West," the 4th annual benefit for the American Islamic Congress (AIC) Boston Chapter, honored Zeren (Barutcuoğlu) Earls (ÜAA '56) on Saturday, December 1, 2012. AIC is a nonreligious, civic and cultural organization promoting tolerance and the exchange of ideas among all people. The AIC Center on Newbury Street in Boston is a home for arts, music and cultural programming, and honored Zeren as a Founding Member of First Night Boston. Zeren was also President of the FABSIT Board of Directors for several years til 2003. _____________________________________________ Career Day at TAC 23 TAC alumni from journalism, diplomacy, engineering, architecture, medicine, law, and construction management gathered on campus to advise students on their selection of a career. The alums shared perspectives relevant to their professions on personality fit, educational requirements, challenges and advantages, and job options. To students TAC Director Chris Hanna expressed his hope that “when your turn comes, you will return to TAC to give your younger brothers and sisters the same support.” (Mersinde İmece, November 22, 2012) _____________________________________________ Louis Bailey Wilkins, TAC Teacher from 1958 to 1967 4 Mr. Louis Bailey Wilkins, TAC teacher from 1958 to 1967, recently passed away in North Carolina. In 1958 Mr. Wilkins graduated from Elon College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and went to Turkey to teach for eight years at Tarsus American College where he met his wife, Beth. Upon his return from Turkey in 1967, he earned a Master's degree in Counseling from UNC-Chapel Hill and continued his career in education. Over his life, Mr. Wilkins was involved with many community organizations, including several to which donations may be made in his memory. For a list, and his memorial article, please go to www.richandthompson.com. First Recipient of the FABSIT Nejat B. and Anne Woodard Ezal ÜAA Scholarship... As the first recipient of this award, Özden Erturgut was asked to write a reflection on one of Nejat Ezal’s quotations, shared by his father, Bülent Ezal, who endowed this award in his memory. Özden chose the following; an excerpt from her essay is below. “ To enjoy the moment for itself, to immerse oneself in the companionship of friends, to attempt to understand the intricate rhythm of life, from the miniscule to the immense – that is the “walkabout”. – Nejat Ezal “The Walkabout – the Voyage is Itself the Mystery” “When I read Nejat Ezal’s quote, I could understand how his point of view was toward life. He comprehended the real aims of life and claimed that while trying to reach these aims, people shouldn’t ignore the actual values of life. He defined the “walkabout” in his own thoughts and manner. He said, “to enjoy the moment for itself” and meant that you should take beauty and benefit from every single minute that you live. He said, “to immerse oneself in the companionship of friends” and he meant knowing the worth of your real friends without letting your ambitions beat you. Lastly, he said, “to attempt to understand the intricate rhythm of life”, and meant to try to make sense while living the complex part of your life. Nejat Ezal summarized these in his personal definition of “walkabout”. If I have a chance to read this quote again in the future, and if I don’t have regret because of what I’ve done or haven’t done, it means I implement my walkabout successfully. “ — Özden Erturgut _____________________________________________ Zeren Earls (ÜAA ‘56) Honored by AIC... Two New ÜAA Films have been produced under the direction of SEV's Communications Department to promote the school to potential new students and their parents. Videos for ACI and TAC are in production. Please check our website and Facebook page to view these films. news from the FABSIT Family………………………. Founder's Day By Alison Stendahl, November 13, 2012 Academic Dean and math teacher at ÜAA Excerpted from her article at http://globalministries.org/ mee/missionaries/founders-day.html Above, a 1896 Catalog from Saint Paul's Institute, now Tarsus American College, and below, a 1936 pamphlet from Talas American School for Boys; go to http:// www.fabsit.org/about.history.php and click on these images for accounts of conditions of admission, curriculum, tuition, and expectations of conduct at the time. “I had the privilege of participating in the inauguration of “Founder’s Day”. This was a celebration to bring together representatives of schools who trace their lineage to an ABCFM established school in Anatolia in the 19th century. As students, teachers, and administrators we came together for 3 days and were hosted by ACI in İzmir. We were from the American Collegiate Institute (ACI, İzmir), International College (IC, Beirut), Üsküdar American Academy (UAA, İstanbul), Tarsus American College (TAC), and the American College in Greece (ACG/Pierce College, Athens). We visited the site where the original ACI and IC were founded, learning a bit about the history of Smyrna/İzmir. We learned that both ACG and today’s ACI were founded as a single school and split with the exchange of population following the establishment of the Republic of Turkey. We visited the site in “Paradise”, outside of İzmir, where IC moved in 1914 when they needed more space. Today these wonderfully preserved buildings are on a NATO base. IC moved to Beirut in 1936. We listened to the IC students sing their alma mater on the stage of the old auditorium. Students worked together to generate ideas for common social service projects. “The stated aim of Founder’s Day was to ‘create an understanding of a common heritage and to promote international understanding’. As I listened to wafts of Turkish, Arabic, Greek, English and at times French, as I watched the students interact and explore, and the adults compare history, dreams and frustrations, I knew that the spirit of the ABCFM founders is still alive within our various schools. No other heritage could link such a diverse yet similar group of people together. As our schools begin to search for their roots, they are discovering the stories, the traditions, and the spirit that continues to live on. “... when I participate in events such as Founder’s Day, I feel surrounded by those who have gone before me. Our family is indeed finally finding one another and what a reunion it can be, Turk, Arab, Greek, Christian, Muslim, Jew. Nothing can be more significant, more providential and more full of hope, than this group of students and teachers coming together at this time and in this place in an effort to discover where they come from. Our schools’ shared values and shared belief in the power of education in transforming a person, has been passed down from generation to generation and has now settled upon each one of us connected to these communities. ACI’s motto, ‘Enter to Learn, Depart to Serve’ or the motto of ACG in Athens, ‘Not to be Served, but to Serve’ shows how closely connected we are. May the spirit never be extinguished. Selam / Shalom / Peace” Where it all started… On Sunday, October 14, Roxy and Don Barry became Harriet Beecher Stowe and Eliphalet Pearson, Phillips’ first head of school. They took us back in time as we toured the Phillips Academy sites of special meaning to the founders of our schools and hospital in Turkey. 5 ACI continued from page 2... university preparation and sessions hosted by university representatives gave students a first-hand look at the process of reviewing and selecting colleges, and preparing for their university studies. The event was organized by our International University Counselors and Turkish University and Career Counselor, with support from our Grade 12 Guidance counselor. MOODS – we all know that high school students can sometimes get into moods, but at ACI, it has a very different meeting. When we say ACI students get into “MOODS”, we really mean it! MOODS is ACI’s annual student-organized, student-led, Fall musical performance and stage extravaganza. The two performances highlight our students’ talents in music, dance, dramatic presentation and organizational skill as they undertake and deliver all aspects of this highly anticipated annual event. This year’s show did not disappoint, as students thrilled the audience with outstanding dance routines, hilarious hosting and wonderful performances of vintage songs from the 50’s through the 90’s. The musical retrospective was a pleasure to watch from the Blake Auditorium or broadcast from ACI Live TV. As students sent the show out live over the internet viewers connected via Facebook and Livestream. Congratulations to our teacher-supervisor Secil Hm. for her tireless committment to this event - this year was her 10th year as the MOODS coordinator. Thanks to all involved. The American Collegiate Institute was proud to host the first Founders’ Day Event from November 1-3, 2012. The American Collegiate Institute along with our dispersed American Board family from Greece, Lebanon, and Turkey participated in a three-day event that focused on our collective heritage and unique roots. Guests from the American Board-founded schools: Üsküdar American Academy (Istanbul), Tarsus American College (Tarsus), American Collegiate Institute (Izmir), The American College of Greece/Pierce College (Athens), and International College (Beirut), were invited to the first annual Founders’ Day celebrations where we focused on our special history as descendants of the American Board Schools founded in Anatolia in the 19th century. The purpose of the reunion was to develop an understanding of our common history, to cultivate regional partnerships based on mutual interests, and to foster international-mindedness in our students as we share the inspiring stories of our founding and growth. Additionally, students from the various schools discussed and planned social service projects and their collective committments to service-learning. We hope the Founders’ Day grows into an annual event that will be hosted in alternating locations in years to come. 6 On a sad note, the ACI family paid its final farewell to one of its most vibrant and committed past-principals who passed away on October 15, 2012. Zehra Bercis Toğulga, who served as a teacher, dean and principal at ACI for many years. In a special service hosted in the ACI Blake Auditorium, former students, teachers, administrators and family members honored the memory of Bergis Hm. in a ceremony that celebrated her life and reflected on her committment to education and the welfare of the young students for whom she cared. Following her tenture as the ACI high school principal, Bergis Hm. was tasked by the SEV Foundation to assist with the establishment of the İzmir SEV Elementary School, where she worked tirelessly to help build the new school on a strong foundation. Bergis Hm.’s legacy will remain in the hearts of those she touched during her many years of dedicated service to the American Collegiate Institute. _____________________________________________ TAC continued from page 2... The focus of TAC’s efforts this year is to improve the depth and quality of what it currently offers to students. Programs such as “Ready to Learn” are increasing student organizational and study Students listen to advice at skills. Emphasizing qualities TAC’s Foreign Universities Fair called for by the IB (International Baccalaureate) “Learner Profile” is increasing students’ intrinsic motivation to learn. Integrating formal, subject related “SAT” test preparation into science instruction brings benefits to students as they prepare for university entrance exams. TAC students continue to join in events hosted by sister SEV American high schools (ACI, ÜAA) such as the Leadership Conference and Founders’ Day, yet they are also looking inward to improve the effectiveness of service learning such as English language instruction for students at a neighborhood elementary school or providing academic support to eighth grade students at our SEV Elementary School. Teachers too are supporting the school’s efforts to realize the goals of its strategic plan, to increase student interaction with aspects of internationalism, and to provide more opportunities for students to assume leadership responsibilities as they design and fulfill requirements of the IB’s CAS (Creativity, Action, Service) program. Even American flag football and now cheerleading are on the horizon to become activities at TAC. Improving the depth and quality of existing programs and learning opportunities is definitely TAC’s focus this year, yet increasing the breadth of the school’s activities has also not been forgotten. The Stickler building still towers and keeps watch over the school, so we are in good hands. Alumni continue to stop by and share memories and pieces of history with us which helps us all to appreciate even more what a privilege it is to work at TAC, and live in this part of Türkiye. Greetings to all of you from TAC! _____________________________________________ ÜAA continued from page 3... past decade, and we feel it allows ÜAA to truly be coeducational. We are not only coeducational through gender equity in the student body but also through the significant number of clubs and activities for both boys and girls. The school currently has 785 students in grades prep through twelve and will reach a maximum capacity of 840 students for the 2014-2015 school year. We began the school year with a welcome back breakfast for all faculty and students in the garden, and the student council followed this event with a Back-toSchool dance on the campus. The ÜAA Alumni Association hosted the annual Brownie Day at the end of September on the campus and it was well attended by graduates who enjoyed the entertainment and friendly atmosphere while catching up with former classmates. I thank the ÜAA Alumni Association for their dedication and commitment to supporting the school. This year, thirty five percent of the school faculty are foreign teachers who are teaching in the following subjects: English, Biology, Physics, French, Spanish, Chemistry, Physical Education, and Mathematics. We also have foreign faculty serving as head of the library and as our international university counselor. One of our goals is to push this ratio up to 40% over the next few years to ensure that our students have as much exposure as possible to qualified native English speakers in the classrooms across multiple subject areas. Our students have already participated in the 9th annual Amman Model United Nations Conference in Amman, Jordan in October. As I write this letter we are planning our Turkish International Model United Nations Conference here at ÜAA in December and we are pleased to announce our plenary speaker, Prof. Dr. İlter Turan. İlter Bey is a TAC graduate and currently serves as the Chairman of the SEV Board of Trustees. We are honored to have him speak as he is an internationally recognized expert on the politics of Turkey and the region. The German Club is preparing for a week-long trip to Germany during our Winter Holiday break. This trip is organized to serve as an extension of our German language program and provide our students with the opportunity to spend one week in an intensive German language environment. We recently hosted our sister school’s (TAC and ACI) student council members here for the annual Leadership Conference. This event allowed the student leaders from the three schools to come together and share what each school does to promote school spirit and activities. We had several excellent speakers join us as well and work with the students on leadership development. On Friday, Oct. 19th, Bade Küçükoğlu (TAC ‘97) and her husband, Satheesh Namasivayam presented to the students. Ms. Küçükoğlu and her husband are cofounders of MindVISA, Ltd. Which provides travel-based leadership education services for young people around the world. (see Among Friends, Fall 2011, pg 5) On Saturday, the students participated in an all-day program which was organized through Sema Başol (ÜAA ‘70). Ms. Başol is cofounder of The Turkish Women’s Initiative (www.thetwi.org) which promotes the economic advancement of Turkish women and girls through signature programs like its Changemaker Leadership Training. (see Among Friends, Fall 2011, pg. 5) We also had the pleasure of having Ayşegül Yelçe (ÜAA ‘70) join us in the afternoon and provide a unique perspective about the disabled in Turkey. It is the strength of the graduates that makes ÜAA such a unique school. With your support, Üsküdar American Academy will do even more to increase academic excellence while continuing to promote our special values and educational practices. We are a school that strives to be international in its philosophy and in its education.
