Delaware Community School City School District of Albany Giglio’s Journal Volume 1, Issue 1 Dear Delaware Community Friends and Families, May 2010 The wait is over! After months of planning and work by our dedicated school staff, welcome to the first edition of the Delaware Newsletter. From our many school functions I have heard our parents and community members verbalize the need for a vehicle to illustrate and communicate all of the fantastic programming that goes on at the Delaware Community School. We want our newsletter to be a living, usable document for our students, families and staff to increase contact as well as convey all of the wonderful projects and events that our children are working on. So what’s new? We have successfully started to have our students play outside for recess prior to eating lunch. Current research indicates that not only do children eat more food when not rushing to go outside, the transition back to class is more placid and thus, quality learning can occur. We have done some fantastic fundraising for our local, as well as global community. Our Thursday Morning Program continues to drive our character education program. Our Delaware Community Garden is in full bloom. I encourage you to soak-up all the wonderful events and information listed in our newsletter. One final note; please send in your email address to the main office if you would like to receive this newsletter via email. We are trying to go paperless. Volume 1, Issue 1 Page 3 Enrichment Programs Gifted and Talented Advanced Reader Book Club Gifted and Talented Advanced Reader Book Club: Sadako, Owl Boy, Odd and the Frost Giant, The Bad Beginning, and Jeremy Fink and the Meaning of Life are all books students have explored in depth at the Advanced Reader Book Club. The Advanced Reader Book Club at Delaware Community School currently has 25 participating students in grades 3-5. These students are all advanced readers in their classes. There are 11 fifth grade students, 6 third grade students and 8 fourth grade students participating. We have been meeting since November 17th on Tuesdays after school from 3:45-4:30. This gifted and talented program is being run by five elementary teachers and one of the reading teachers (Mindy Whisenhunt, Diane Groezinger, Heidi Myers, Stacey Spilman, and Mary Fadale). Through this program students are taking charge of their own learning and becoming independent learners and thinkers. Students have been put into five groups based on skill level and students personal book preferences. Each group is allowed to direct their own reading experiences. The book club has taken field trips to the new library and students have done presentations and projects based on the books they have read. Students performed skits, made mini art exhibits, posters, shields, and told some of their favorite parts of the stories they had read. We have received over $500.00 worth of books through a Donors Choose Grant. The school has also provided additional books. We now have enough books to run a successful gifted and talented reader program for this year and additional years as well! -By Heidi Myers Chorus On Wednesday, March 3rd the following chorus students participated in the Districtwide, All City Chorus Concert at Myers Middle School. The Elementary All City Chorus was conducted by Mrs. Vargo, our music teacher. Chess Club Chess Club top members Chyim and Manual holding their trophies. The DCS Royals Chess Club held their 2nd Annual March Madness Chess Tournament at the Delaware Community School. On March 24th, 2010, The 2009 Champ Chyim Bowen defended his title against fellow 5th Grader Manuel Abrogan (currently ranked 3rd in the Capital Region Scholastic Div.) It was a very intense match between our Chess Club’s two top members! But, there can only be One Champ! The entire Chess Club watched and ate snacks provided by Albany PAL. Both players had good game plans, but in the end Chyim had Manuel’s “King” in “Checkmate!” A GREAT CHESS MATCH! Another notable match was in the Consolation Game where Klien Aboki defeated Kevin Baez for 3rd Place in the tournament. We also had a few Kindergarteners (Ingrid Colafati & Willow Shipherd from Ms. Valentine’s Class) and a 1st grader (Abiyah Yahudah-Edwards from Ms. LaFountain & Mrs. Stuart) competing this year. The DCS Royals Club has been meeting on Wednesdays after school (in the library) for an hour of fun & friendly chess competition among peers. 20 of 40 DCS Royals Chess Club members will be invited to play in the City-Wide Chess Tournament (Sponsored by Albany PAL) to be held on May 11th & 13th, 2010 from 3:30pm to 6:00pm!
