Mosquito nets are the first line of defense against the spread of malaria. Consistent use of bed nets provides low-cost, effective protection against contracting the disease. Mosquito nets are made from polyester (PES) or polyethylene (PE) and are available, treated or untreated, with insecticide. We recommend use of nets treated with insecticides, as they are significantly more effective in preventing disease, and reducing mosquito populations. Quality Our quality system is built on over 40 years of experience as the world’s leading not-for-profit supplier of affordable essential medical products. Spanning the entire supply chain, our quality system includes a comprehensive risk assessment based on the CE risk classification, product dossier, past performance and safety and efficacy of the product. Our manufacturers maintain valid ISO 13485, and/or specific ISO requirements. Our products carry a Certificate of Conformity that guarantees a minimum set of regulatory, technical and safety requirements. The certificate also specifies product standard and validity period. WHOPES norm The WHO established the WHO Pesticide Evaluation scheme (WHOPES) in order to set quality norms and standards for public health pesticides. IDA Foundation’s LLINs are WHOPES approved. Aside from the products in IDA’s assortment for malaria prevention, our pharmaceutical assortment also offers medicines for the treatment of malaria (e.g. Artemisinin Combination Therapy). WHOPES Mosquito Nets Malaria is one of the world’s most common and life-threatening tropical diseases. Caused by parasites spread to people through the bites of infected mosquitoes, the disease is both preventable and curable. The IDA assortment includes treated mosquito nets, and preference is given to Long-Lasting Insecticidal Nets (LLIN’s). The treated mosquito nets offered in IDA’s product range use the insecticides deltamethrine or permethrine. During the expected life span of the mosquito net (in average between 3-5 years according to use, type and fabric origin) no further treatment of the net is needed. Malaria is a life-threatening disease caused by parasites that are transmitted to people through the bites of infected mosquitoes. In 2010, malaria caused an esti mated 655 000 deaths mostly among African children. Malaria is preventable and curable. Increased malaria prevention and control measures are dramatically reducing the malaria burden in many places. Most malaria cases and deaths occur in Sub-Saharan Africa. However, Asia, Latin America, and to a lesser extent the Middle East and parts of Europe are also affected. In 2010, 99 countries and territories had ongoing malaria transmission. Vector control is the main way to reduce malaria transmission at the community level. It is the only intervention that can reduce malaria transmission from very high levels to close to zero. For individuals, personal protection against mosquito bites represents the first line of defence for malaria prevention. One form of vector control is Insecticide-treated mosquito nets (ITNs) The WHO Pesticide Evaluation Scheme (WHOPES) was set up in 1960. WHOPES promotes and coordinates the testing and evaluation of pesticides for public health. It functions through the participation of representatives of governments, manufacturers of pesticides and pesticide application equipment, WHO Collaborating Centres and research institutions, as well as other WHO programmes, notably the International Programme on Chemical Safety. In its present form, WHOPES comprises a four-phase evaluation and testing programme, studying the safety, efficacy and operational acceptability of public health pesticides and developing specifications for quality control and international trade. www.who.int/whopes Detail instruction LLIN Technical Specifications Mosquito net, Polyester Material Polyester (PES) 100% ISO1833 Fabrication wrap knitted ISO8388 Denier between 75 and 100 Filament multi-filament 36 or higher Mesh size 21 - 36 holes/cm² (136 - 200 holes/inch²) Weight between 30 - 40 gr/m² depends on denier Size and shape as per item description ISO3801 Mosquito net, Polyethylene Source: www.who.int Material Polyethylene (PE) 100% ISO1833 Fabrication wrap knitted ISO8388 Denier between 100 and 150 Filament mono-filament Mesh size GDP/GMP certified 21- 36 holes/cm² (136 - 200 holes/inch²) Weight between 35 - 47 gr/m² depends on denier Size and shape as per item description IDA holds the following quality certificates Making Quality Healthcare Affordable ISO3801 Long-Lasting Insecticidal Net
