Although these founders, Oscar J. Cooper, Edgar A. Love, Frank Coleman, and Ernest E. Just are deceased, they are loved and honored by all Omega men. From these beloved four, the current membership now totals over 125,000 men. Our intercollegiate fraternity, which is incorporated, contains men committed to four Cardinal Principles – Manhood, Scholarship, Perseverance, and Uplift. In addition to personifying these principles in our daily lives, several national programs (National Achievement Week, National High School Essay Contest, Talent Hunt, Assault on Illiteracy, Senior Citizen Project, Habitat for Humanity, Perpetuation of the African-American Male, The South Africa Project, Support of the NAACP and the UNCF, etc.) keep the Cardinal Principles in sharp focus. At the 1920 Grand Conclave in Nashville, TN, Carter G. Woodson inspired the establishment of the National Achievement Week Recognition of the Negro life and history. In 1927, this outstanding initiative became one of the fraternity's mandated programs. Originally designed to promote the study of Negro life and history, Achievement Week is now designed to seek out and give due recognition to those individuals at the local and international levels who have made a noteworthy contribution toward improving the quality of life for African Americans. A High School Essay Contest is held in conjunction with Achievement Week. This contest is open to all college-bound high school seniors. Each participant must submit an essay on a theme/topic chosen by the fraternity. The Lambda Alpha Alpha Chapter awards the top three of the submitted essays as a phase of the International Achievement Week observance. The Scholarship Program is intended to promote academic excellence among the undergraduate members. Graduate chapters are expected to provide financial assistance to student members and non-members. A portion of the fraternity’s international budget is allocated to scholarships through the Charles R. Drew Scholarship Commission. Over the past 35 years, Lambda Alpha Alpha Chapter has donated over $222,000.00 in direct scholarship dollars to over 207 local high school students. In addition, the chapter also sponsors annual events such as Easter Egg hunt for under privileged children in conjunction with the division of Health and Rehab Services, Toys for Tots, Thanksgiving basket, MLK day track and field events, Talent Hunt and a Brain Bowl team to name just a few. Greetings and best wishes, On behalf of the Achievement Week Committee, officers and members of the Lambda Alpha Alpha Chapter of The Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., I would like to extend to each of you a warm welcome and sincere thanks for helping to make this program a success. We are truly grateful to our many friends, organizations, churches and individuals for you patronization and cooperation. Your support has given us the opportunity to not only continue to prove scholarships to our youth but also other services to our community such as: Christmas Toys for Tots, Easter Egg Hunt, Thanksgiving Baskets and our youth mentoring group the “Lamplighters”. Again, thanks for you continued fine support our scholarship and community service projects. Sincerely, Wilbert K. “Will” Brown Co-Chairman, Achievement Week Committee PROGRAM Presiding Bro.
