with our readers. This issue is especially poignant
because it brings all of our

you are ensuring that every animal who comes through our
doors receives the same opportunities as Al, Roxy, Linus
and Lucy, and Sammy and Juniper. We are also fortunate
to have the funding from the Kenneth Scott Charitable Trust
to continue the Mutts with Manners Program. Because of
this program, every dog will have a shot to put their best
paw forward!

Q: When and why did you start volunteering at LTBHS?
A: I have been volunteering since early 2011. I was asked to be a
board member in April 2010 and that’s kind of how it started, so I
was able to become familiar with the organization before jumping
in. I was asked to help with something--I can’t remember what,
and I have been volunteering ever since. Transports were one of
the things I remember first becoming involved with. I love coming
into LTBHS--it’s a very welcoming atmosphere.
Q: Why do you think it is important to volunteer?
A: Volunteering is important in whatever capacity you can offer.
Whether you’re donating or giving your time, it is important to
give back. Even if you come in once a month, you’re still helping.
It is a very rewarding experience.
Q: What is most rewarding aspect about volunteering at
LTBHS?
A: Seeing the animals get adopted! It’s why we are all here. Every adoption can be attributed to the staff and volunteers in some
way, and I love being here. The staff and volunteers are all wonderful and welcoming. It makes me want to continue to help out
and always do more.

Q: Why are you a member of LTBHS?
A: I love animals! LTBHS is such a great organization to support. Also, it is incredibly important to support the community
and build our local economy. My family adopted two cats from
LTBHS, and we are forever grateful to the organization.

A: My love for animals definitely started at a very young age. I
always had pets growing up and we always adopted. I stopped
eating meat in support of animals, too.
Q: Why do you think it is important for businesses to get
involved in nonprofits?
A: Especially in our small community, it is important to help each
other out. During the not so busy times of the year, it is good
to know that the community is working together to care for one
another. It is also important to maintain relationships with other
local businesses.

Where are
they now?
W
e’ve had many memorable animals come
through our doors over the years. Though
every animal that comes through LTBHS
makes an impact on the organization and leaves an
imprint on our hearts, there will always be some that
stand out more than others for one reason or another.
They might be animals who are here longer because of medical issues or
ones that need extra training and attention to teach them some manners.
They might be animals who would benefit from long-term foster care or even
ones who have bonded with another shelter resident and must be adopted
together.
No matter how long a dog or cat is here or whatever extra steps it takes to
find them the perfect home, we go to any lengths possible to secure the right
family for our animals. In the past year, our newsletter themes have included
a variety of topics such as training through our Mutts With Manners Program,
going above and beyond to treat medical issues and the benefits of our foster
programs, just to name a few.
We feel it is important for us to share these stories with our readers so they are
aware of the different factors that go into caring for a shelter animal and ensuring
a successful adoption. By reading about these animals in our newsletter over
the past year, you’ve become familiar with some of our more memorable shelter
residents and now, we’d like share with you where they are now. We are happy
to report they are all in loving homes and we are thankful that we’ve been able to
play a role in giving these animals the second chance they deserve.

Al
“Bad Boy Al.” This was the nickname the one and a half year
old Australian Cattle dog mix earned himself during the six months
he called the shelter home. During this time, Al was adopted and
brought back two times, each for various reasons. Australian Cattle dogs can be a bit of a challenge for the inexperienced owner
(or one who doesn’t want to put any time into training). This breed
is typically high energy, has a tendency to be mouthy (especially
when they’re trying to herd other animals or people) and in Al’s
case, he was also a runner and an escape artist.
This didn’t deter us from helping Al find a forever home. Our
Mutts With Manners Program was integral in helping us work with
Al on a weekly basis to encourage good behaviors and to modify
bad ones. Since this program was created in 2013, it has helped
us reduce our return rate from 12-percent to 5-percent, and Al is
one of the many success stories that have contributed to these
numbers!
In May 2014, his training finally paid off and Al found his forever
home with Sarah and David George. Though they had to work
hard to continue Al’s training, they’ve been happy they did.
“He’s doing very well,” said Sarah. “He’s an extremely smart
dog and as long as he’s rewarded, he’ll do exactly what you ask.”
Sarah noted she knew Al was the right dog for her and David
shortly after meeting him.
“I feel in love with Al pretty quickly,” she admitted with a smile. “I
knew I wanted someone I could take on walks during the evening,
so I stopped by LTBHS to visit with some of the dogs. There were
a few there at the time that I wanted to meet, which I did, but I
didn’t really have a connection with any of them. Finally, I asked to
see Al, who was just lying calmly in his kennel. I took him out and
played with him and ended up bringing him home!”
She and David both said they’re happy they made the decision
to open their home and hearts to Al.
“The cool thing about Al is that you’ll never have another like
him,” remarked David with a laugh. “He’s really livened up our
home, and we’d encourage anyone to adopt—it’s a no-brainer.”

kittens, were adopted by Dee Macy and are now living
the good life.

Many of you may remember the video we posted on our Facebook page of a tiny orange and white kitten being bathed. This
kitten was Linus, who along with his sister Lucy, became an orphan after their mother was killed by a vehicle while crossing the
road. We took these two tiny kittens in when they were only a few
days old. Kittens this young require around the clock care and
without it, these little guys wouldn’t have made it. One of our staff
members agreed to take these sweet babies in to foster them and
later, they were fostered by one of our incredible volunteers. We
are very fortunate to have a great network of individuals who are
willing to foster our shelter animals in need.
Since all they had was each other, Linus and Lucy developed
an incredible bond. We hoped the two of them might be adopted
together, however, it is a lot to ask someone to take on one kitten, much less two.
However, we held out hope that there was
that special person out there who might
consider it.
Turns out, there was. Dee Macy, who
had been looking to adopt Linus, couldn’t
resist taking sweet Lucy, as well.
“I was at the shelter getting ready to
take Linus home, when Lucy crawled in
the carrier with her brother!” Dee said. “I
looked at Deter and she started laughing,
and I knew right then that I couldn’t leave
little Lucy. And I’m so glad I adopted them
both.”
“They’re both doing wonderful,” Dee
continued. “They’re very smart and happy together and they get along well with
David and Sarah George adopted Al in 2014, and he has become a much-loved
my dog and other cats. I just love them!”

Two other well-known kitties who you might remember are the
‘Odd Couple,’ or otherwise known as Sammy and Juniper. These
two are as different as night and day, yet together, they make the
perfect pair.
Sammy arrived at the shelter after her owner passed away.
Depressed and shut down, Sammy didn’t want anything to do with
anyone here at the shelter. She showed no interest in other animals and certainly did not want attention from the staff.
Juniper, a tiny nine week old kitten arrived at LTBHS with some
obvious trauma to her sweet face. The skin along her lower jaw
had been peeled away, exposing her gums and teeth. This little
girl was put on medication to help her heal and had to use special
non-sticking kitty litter and could eat only soft food. Despite her
condition, she was a happy and spunky kitten, always bounding all
over the shelter, in search of attention and mischief.
Somehow however, these two opposites attracted. The two
became fast friends, and they could be seen following each other
around the shelter or curled up sleeping. After Juniper arrived, it
was apparent something in Sammy changed. She became more
social and didn’t seem to mind the staff and other animals at the
shelter. It was if this little kitten was all it took to pull Sammy out
of her funk.
As much as we hoped these two might be adopted together, we
knew we had to be realistic. Amazingly though, our wish came
true when Sarah Foltz came in with the intent to adopt just Juniper and after hearing the about this dynamic duo, decided to take
them both.
“I came in to look at Juniper, and when I heard about her good
friend Sammy, I decided to take them both,” Sarah explained. “I
knew I wanted to adopt Juniper, and I figured if she had a great
friend like Sammy with her, the transition into my home would be
easier.”
Sarah noted that the two are still best buddies who sleep and
play together.
“Sammy grooms Juniper and Juniper kneads up on Sammy
like a kitten might do with its mother,” she said. “They are both doing so well—they’ve become a great addition to our family. We’re
definitely happy we adopted them both.”

Moon, our largest annual fundraiser,
last year will remember Roxanne,
since she was the star of the show.
This four year old Pomeranian Chihuahua mix was the poster child for
our Michael G. Phillips Good Samaritan Fund which was the focus
of our Fund A Need portion of the
event. This fund is critical to the
shelter as it provides emergency
medical care to the animals who
come in with critical health issues
which are often expensive to treat.

lems, as she limped when she walked and had an overall bowlegged appearance. After a thorough medical exam, we learned
Roxanne was suffering from a luxating patella. This occurs mainly
in small dogs when the patella or kneecap, dislocates and moves
out of its normal position. A luxating patella affects a dog’s ability
to walk correctly and is often painful to the animal. The only way
to correct the problem is through surgery. In Roxanne’s case, both
knees required surgery, which we had done, knowing that it would
greatly improve her quality of life. The only thing next was recovery and of course, a new home!
Roxanne, now called Roxy, found that home with Tina Chapman and has been living the good life ever since.
“She just runs and runs now,” Tina said. “Her knees have completely healed and she’s doing fantastic!”
Tina said Roxy’s transition into her home has gone well and has
provided some companionship for not only her, but her other dog.
“She and my other dog Mitzy are soul mates,” she said. “They
love each other and get along great.”
“I’ve never done anything but adopt and rescue,” Tina continued. “My profession is in home health care, so I’m always taking
care of everyone, and this includes animals. To bring an animal
into your life and care for it is humbling and heartwarming. I’m
so fortunate to have this dog in my life—I don’t know what I’d do
without her.”

We recently took LTBHS shelter dogs, Frost and Bingo, on a field trip to
Petoskey. The dogs enjoyed a change of pace and our outings also raise
awareness in the community about Little Traverse Bay Humane Society!
Staff Spotlight: Jane Balmer
Animal Care Attendant and Pet Therapist Jane Balmer has been with the organization
for 20 years. Her responsibilities include daily care and placement of all shelter animals in addition to helping with adoptions and greeting visitors. She also manages the
ANGEL Program, which brings shelter animals to visit with local care facility residents.
Q: When did you start at LTBHS?
A: I started volunteering in 1995 after I moved up north from downstate. In 1997, I was given the
Ladies Auxiliary Volunteer of the Year and shortly after that, I began working at the shelter whenever
I was needed.
Q: You started at the old shelter on US 31 North. What was the shelter like back then?

A: It was quite run-down when I started. We only had five indoor/outdoor dog kennels which wasn’t
enough. And one of those kennels was being use to house a goat—I have no idea why. At one
point there was a homeless lady who was living in another kennel with her two dogs. Her home had been condemned and she had
nowhere else to go—it was very sad, actually. We didn’t have proper cleaning products, and it never smelled very clean.
Q: Why do you think things were so different back then compared to today?
A: For starters, we didn’t have Deter! Once she came in, she
made sure everything was cleaned the right way and the animals
were being properly cared for. Of course she pushed us forward
with the Capital Campaign to build our current facility. Also, I just
don’t think people thought of animals the way we do today. Animal care has definitely come a long way in the past 25 years!

Q: Any favorite animals over the years?
The ANGEL Program, which Jane oversees, connects senior residents with shelter animals. The program has touched many lives
over the years.
A: Well, there was Ripple, Deter’s first bulldog. Ripple came into
the shelter with a bunch of medical problems. She and Deter took
one look at each other and it was love at first sight. I’d often take
her on my ANGEL visits to the local care facilities which was fun.
The thing was though, Ripple loved tennis balls. This could be a
problem, because she’d always try to chase the people down the
hall who had tennis balls on the ends of their walkers. The people
behind the walker would either be screaming or laughing.
Q: What do you enjoy most about working at LTBHS?
A: Like most of our staff, I just like to know how many lives we’ve
been able to save by being here. Not just that, but also how
many people’s lives we’ve enhanced by matching them with a
pet. It’s been amazing to see how the numbers increase every
year. When I first started at the old shelter, we maybe adopted
out 40 animals per year. Now, to be finding homes for over 700
every year is truly amazing!
Q: What does it mean to the community have a shelter like this?

A: We have a wonderful mission—it’s very true to course. We
have a great staff who really cares for the animals and works
very hard every day to keep this place clean. The number of
low cost spay/neuter surgeries alone that we’ve been able to

Black Jack
Black Jack is doing great! I have three kids; ages 4, 12 and 16,
and they all argue over who gets to sleep with him! He plays
fetch with us, tug of war, and loves to go on walks and runs at
our park area. He is a great dog, listens very well and loves
car rides. My little son loves to read stories and share videos
on his kindle with Black Jack and he lays down and listens—it
is so adorable! The transition was so easy, too. It seems like
he felt at home, and you could see it on his face right away.

Diana
Diana is doing awesome! I knew when I first saw her
at LTBHS that she was the dog for me. Diana has the
sweetest face. She is doing great in the home and
gets along with the kids really well. I was surprised
when I brought her home how well-behaved she is.
She has also grown fond of the water. She jumps
right off the dock! When she isn’t swimming, Diana
loves to chase balls and Frisbees—if you throw it she
will chase it! Diana really is a blessing to our family.
We love her.

Callie
Pete is doing great! Before I met Pete, I would look through the
website and volunteer at LTBHS to see who was there—I was
really interested in terriers. One day I came in and they recommended that I check out Pete. It was really a perfect match. I was
concerned with how he would get along with my two cats at home,
but the transition was incredibly smooth. After a quick introduction,
Pete and his cat siblings were running around and chasing each
other. He loves walks by the water! I also like to take him walking
in the park and through trails. Pete has been a great addition to
the family. I really did not anticipate how beneficial adopting would
be. When I adopted Pete I wasn’t expecting all the love and good
times he would give me in return.
I live alone in the country, so my grandson and daughter took me to the humane society to look at dogs, but I
came home with a cat instead! Callie loves to sit on the
windowsill watching the birds outside. She also enjoys
sitting in the sink, which is pretty funny! She likes to
chase golf balls around the house and play with her little
toy mice. When she’s not playing, she’s usually sleeping. She’s a very spoiled cat!

Cruz
Cruz is an active little boy, who loves to tease our
older dog, Tank. Cruz enjoys chasing the kids on
their bikes and pulling them on their scooters. Cruz
loves cuddle and get his belly rubbed. He has made
himself at home and been a wonderful addition to
our family.

We first saw Echo on the LTBHS website and just
knew he was the dog for us. Boy, were we right!
Echo is doing so well in our home! We honestly
couldn’t be happier with his transition. On the first
day, he came in and made himself right at home.
Echo is learning the rules and boundaries rather
quickly, too. When we adopted Echo we knew we
would have to give extra attention to training him,
and he has really adjusted well. We would definitely
encourage anyone who is willing to give extra time
and patience to adopt a furry friend. It will change
your life!

My story is a long one and I don’t really want to share it right now, but I will say that I’ve
come a long way and I’m not giving up on finding the best forever home for me. My
name is Bandit and I’m a six year old mixture of Lab, Pointer and maybe a little Saint
Bernard, though I’m not as large as one. I’m a current member of the Lonely Hearts
Club because I’ve had an on and off residency at LTBHS this past year. Okay, so I’m
not perfect, can you tell me who is?
Or maybe I could just place an ad in the personal section of the newspaper where
the “searching for a significant other” communications are. I would write something
like this:
I believe we all have our little imperfections that we try to hide, but I’m going to open
up and admit that my most outstanding vexation is that I don’t like to share my food or
treats with anyone. No exceptions. Therefore it’s difficult for me to live with other pets
and children who cannot understand that concept. My other little pet peeve is when
someone grabs my collar without warning. Does any dog like that? I don’t think so.
Otherwise I’m a perfectly content dog that enjoys the outdoors. In fact, my favorite
pastime is laying in the yard and watching the clouds roll by. If I had a fenced in yard
all to myself, I’d be a happy camper for life! Of course, my next favorite place is indoors with my own comfortable dog bed where I’d be dreaming of the great outdoors.
I know most of you are familiar with my story and since I’ve been here so long, I
couldn’t help wondering if there was a web site for shelter animals similar to the dating service offered to people who are looking for a companion. Only this would be for
pets searching for the perfect forever home. If there isn’t one, I think there should be
and maybe a good name would be: Pets for Keeps.com. It could even have a subtitle: No Matter What. Don’t you think that’s a good idea? I know I’d sign up.
Wanted: The perfect family for a beautiful four year old female Plott Hound mix.
Would like to be the only pet in a home with no small children. Very loyal and loving
dog that enjoys unsupervised exploring, so a fenced in yard would be ideal. Loves
tennis balls, traveling in the car and refreshingly long walks; very well mannered on
leash. If you are the ideal match for me then please send application to Ginger in c/o
LTBHS. I hope the replies fill our mailbox.
Every day I see the dogs around me find their forever homes and sometimes I wonder why I’m still here. Not that I’m complaining mind you, this is the best temporary
home I’ve ever had; I love my staff and the volunteers that come to walk me and help
with my training, but a forever home is still my dream. I try to keep an optimistic attitude, but sometimes it hurts when I’m passed
over once again for the more social guy. I’ve become a member of the Lonely Hearts Club which was started for dogs that have
lived here for several months; it’s been over a year for me. And I heard some of the dogs whispering that I’m really a part of the
“Lonely Losers Club.” Sigh, I’m not a loser; only an extraordinary girl.
There are some days that I just lie in my kennel and dream about having a forever home. I want to be loved for who I am and in
my heart I know that there is a family just for me. I’m going to keep on waiting no matter how long it takes. Those goody four paws
adoptable dogs can say what they want; I’ll show them that I can find a forever home, too. Well… maybe I will place a teensy weensy ad in the personal column—I suppose it couldn’t hurt.
Daisy
There are so many success stories of pets finding their forever homes and someday I hope
to write about my victorious day. My name is Daisy and I’m a small brown tiger cat that has
a coat not unlike a wild rabbit. It’s actually very pretty. When I first came to LTBHS I was
very frightened and didn’t know a soul. I came from a home too, but something happened
and I lost all that was familiar to me. I used to be so afraid of letting anyone see me, but then
one day something changed inside my heart and I felt a little bit braver. My curiosity got the
better of me and I started to venture out of the cat room. At first it was only at night when all
was quiet, but eventually I started to come out during the day.
I was surprised that everyone was so friendly and kind to me. Their words of encouragement gave me confidence and before long I was
a front desk cat. Oh boy, I was so nervous at first, but eventually I became comfortable with everyone. The computers really fascinated
me, especially the mouse. I look forward to hanging out at the front desk now and I even let visitors pet me. I’m so happy that I’ve become
a more social girl, and though I’m not fond of being picked up or cuddled, I love attention.
I also like to play with some of the cats, but for the most part I just like to watch everything that’s going on around me. I’ve come a long
way since my arrival to LTBHS and I’m very content. They helped me become a more confident cat with a positive outlook about finding
a forever home. I can hardly wait for the day when I’ll be able to share my success story with everyone too.

I believe a forever home exists for every pet no matter what their quirks, it’s just a matter of matching lifestyles and personalities. Maybe
Ginger’s idea for a web site is a good one; I know I’d sign up in a heartbeat.

So who doesn’t like a success story? I know I’m looking forward to the day I have one.
Right now I’m still a floater in a sea of grown cats. Mind you, I didn’t start out at LTBHS as
a full size cat. Nope, I’ve been here since I was a wee little thing; I’m one of those leftover
kittens from last summer that nobody wanted because I was too shy. Even though it’s been
over a year, I’m still quite bashful. I don’t hide anymore, but I don’t advertise that I’m in the
region either. My name is Vinnie and though I’m a handsome enough guy with a unique
solid orange coat with white markings; I’m still not confident. My staff has tried to help me,
and I admit that I’m better than I was, but I still have a long way to go before I’m a regular
socialite—which I may never be, but who knows?
I hang out in the main cat room with some of my friends that have a similar personality. We like to talk about all the new cats that keep
coming and going, and of course we gossip about all the visitors. We’re tolerant of all the attention we receive, but we don’t dwell on it.
We just like peace and quiet. Sure, I don’t run and hide like I used to and I enjoy my treats and all the special care, but don’t expect me to
come meet you at the door or miss you when you leave. When you do come to visit, you’ll see that I’m quite content in my corner condo
with all my buddies. So if you think I would fit into your lifestyle—you never know maybe we’ll hit it off—I would be willing to give it a try,
though I make no promises. But who’s to say, it could be my success story after all!
I was just reading Ginger’s story, and even though she’s not my best friend, I
respect her and therefore I agree with her. Dog’s like ourselves that are passed
over time and time again because we are the “Loners.” We can still be wonderful
companion dogs, we just need the perfect family to recognize our needs.
Jay
My name is Jay and I’m a six year old Golden Retriever/ Lab mix. I originally came from a home where
I lived a quiet life with my mother; then one day it all changed. We were both surrendered to LTBHS
due to family issues that I can’t remember anymore. My mom was adopted shortly after our arrival
and later my turn came. I was in a home for nearly a year when everything changed there and once
again I was at LTBHS. I had a brief adoption where it was discovered that I was not a social guy when
it came to other dogs; that’s when I became a “Loner.” I prefer to be the only pet. I love kids, especially
the older ones that like to play ball-nothing like a good game of fetch in my book. I’m a very loyal guy
when it comes to my family. I’ll follow you everywhere and do my best to keep everything safe. In
reality, I’m a very nice dog and if someone will just take the time to come visit with me, they’ll get the
full picture of my gentle nature. I just have a few guidelines that need to be followed and once that’s
done I’ll be your best only dog ever!
