Dear BSCBAA Member,
akc.org
It’s the time of year when cold chills are in the air, the pretty foliage
from fall has faded a way and frost covers the ground. The winter season is near
its end and we look forward to the spring season to come. But, before then,
there has been lots of hunting and training that has taken place. We have had a
chance to do some great hunting with our dogs and our friends. Some fellow
club members with Boykins in tow went to Kansas in December just before
Christmas and enjoyed a weekend pheasant hunt. There was plenty to hunt up
and the Boykins had a great time along with the human hunters and wonderful
comradery.
Proud Boykin owners and excited little brown dogs were a hit with the outfitters
and guides in Kansas. Well, maybe they were more impressed with the LBDs
than the LBD’s owners. The trip was a success and it was lots of fun to see several Boykins on hunt in the field at once. We did allow a Brittany, Gunner to be a
part of our party with the influence of Ron Alfred and his son Corey. To see the
tremendous drive, skills and the never-give-up

attitude no matter the terrain or challenge was enough to bring big grins on
faces and warmth to the hearts. It was
worth enduring the cold weather,
hunting in rough terrain and struggling
over cold icy creeks to be with friends
and hunt with the Boykins & Brittany.
The pictures I share in this editor’s note
will surely show the wonderful time
had by all.

Director vacancies created by outgoing BSCBAA Board Members: Troy Blalock—SC, Jacquelin “Jackie” DeAngelo—NY, Jeff Engelmann
–TX, Heber R. “Butch” Norckauer, Jr. –AL and Dan Reel—GA. Thank you outgoing board members - we appreciate your service to the

In accordance with the Bylaws, additional nominations of the eligible members may be made by written petition addressed to the
BSCBAA Secretary, Ginger Hurley and received at PO Box 781, Cypress, TX 77410 on or before 15 days after this publication of the
Boykin Spaniel Standard. Additional nominations must include a written acceptance from the nominee asserting their willingness to
serve, and should include a maximum of one-half of a standard page, 12 point font, self-written resume of background/qualifications
to be included with the ballots.
If no valid additional nominees are received by the secretary on or before 15 days after this publication of the Boykin Spaniel Standard, the nominating committee's slate shall be declared elected at the time of the annual meeting and no further balloting will be
required. If one or more additional nominees are received by the secretary on or before February 15th, the secretary will in accordance with the bylaws mail ballots for voting, return mailing, opening and counting at the annual meeting. The mailed ballots will include a copy of each candidate's half page resume.
The 2016 Nominating Committee is Dan Kauzlarich, Chair, Board Member, Chairman named by the BOD; Greg Copeland, Member,
DeVon Ruth, Member, with alternates: Regina Hairie, Member, Beth Crocker, Board Member.
The 2016 Nominating Committee is pleased to present the following 2019 Class slate of nominees for the five Board vacancies created
by outgoing BSCBAA Board Members: Tim Pullian, GA, Debi Odom, GA, Regina Hairie, NY, David Allen, TX and Larry Lynch, GA.
TIM PULLIAN, GA
Tim and wife Cathy and son Carson live in Bowman, Georgia. Tim is a trainer/handler/exhibitor in conformation, retriever and spaniel hunt tests and field trials. He has earned conformation Championships and AKC Retriever and Spaniel Hunt Tests titles on multiple
dogs. The Pullians have exhibited at the AKC National Invitational and Westminster Kennel Club Dog Shows and will be exhibiting
two Boykins at this year’s Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. In addition to the BSCBAA, Tim is a member of the English Springer
Spaniel Field Trial Association and the Flatcoated Retriever Society of America. Tim spends much of his time training and competing
with the dogs, fishing and site seeing with his family. Tim owns and breeds English Springer Spaniels and Flatcoated Retrievers and
has a new Field Spaniel puppy. His goal in breeding is that of breeding dogs that both show and hunt successfully. Many, if not most
all, of the Boykins Tim trains/handles/exhibits are successful at both conformation and hunt test events. The Pullians have trained,
handled and exhibited over 10 Boykin Spaniels in the field and show ring, earning both conformation titles and AKC Retriever and
Spaniel Hunt Tests titles. Tim’s goals as a member of the Board of the BSCBAA are: 1) to uphold the integrity of the BSCBAA as The
National AKC Parent Club representing the Boykin Spaniel; 2) to further the hunting instincts of the Boykin Spaniel; 3) to encourage
owners to both show and hunt their dogs and prevent a split between the two events other breeds have experienced; 4) to focus on
improving the health of the breed through health clearances and 5) overall to promote the Boykin as the great little hunting dog it is
and all the things one can do with a Boykin Spaniel. With invaluable experience in other breeds and national breed clubs, Tim brings
vital knowledge and practicable know-how to the BSCBAA Board and to Boykins.
DEBI ODOM, GA
Debi Odom and her husband, Derrik reside in Cochran, Georgia where she has operated a successful grooming shop for the past 13
years. She was introduced to the Boykin Spaniel breed by her husband, who owned a fabulous hunting partner named Dutch before
they met. They have owned Boykin Spaniels together for six years. Debi is also a member of the Boykin Spaniel Society ( BSS), the
Macon Kennel Club and volunteers for Boykin Spaniel Rescue as a foster home.
They are currently participating in AKC Conformation and Rally with two of their dogs, while also training toward the JH title. They
had the #4 Boykin in the 2014 National Owner Handler Series. Debi is also proud to have certified one of their Boykins as a Therapy
Dog and belongs to TheraPups of Dublin Ga.

Being relatively new to the AKC, Debi is interested in the following:
Improving the overall health of the Boykin Spaniel, through encouraging testing of breeding stock, and preserving the natural hunting
ability by encouraging the breeding of dogs that are proven in the field. Breed education for judges as well as the public, and making
sure that the breed club fulfills the requirements to hold a National Specialty. Debi has previous Board experience in their local AKC
all breed club, and hopes to bring a fresh perspective to some of the issues facing our club this year. Having served on several committees in the Macon Kennel Club, she is also interested in serving our club by participating in committee work. Having joined the
Boykin Spaniel Club with the sole purpose of determining how she can best serve the Boykin Spaniel breed, whether elected to serve
the board or not, Debi is committed to participating in and promoting the activities of the BSCBAA.
The remaining three Bios were not submitted as the date of this publication.

AKC NEWS AND UPDATES
AKC EVENTS OPERATIONS UPDATE
Event Operations is taking this opportunity to notify clubs of recent changes approved by the Board of Directors that will
have an impact on your club. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us at eventnews@akc.org.
Visiting Judges judging 4-6 Month Beginner Puppy Competition
For events held on or after April 1, 2016 clubs may use visiting (foreign) judges to judge the 4-6 Month Beginner Puppy
Competition.
Cluster Date Agreements:
Clusters are encouraged to develop and execute agreements regarding the priority of show dates for each club in a cluster. While not required, these agreements are of great value when a cluster is in transition, such as a change in clubs or
the dissolution of the cluster. If provided, the AKC will maintain a copy of a cluster date agreement as part of the record of
the clubs in the cluster. In the absence of an executed agreement the AKC will use the standard application of rules, regulations, and policies to determine what club has the right to a date. The primary factor in that determination is which club
held a show on the date the previous year.
Grand Championship levels become titles:
Effective April 1, 2016 the Grand Championship levels will become titles. The change will be retroactive to the beginning of
the program. Dogs that earned an achievement level (Bronze, Silver, Gold, or Platinum) in the past, will have it officially
added on their record. Going forward, title certificates will be issued when a dog achieves the required points needed. Additionally, dogs can earn multiple levels of the Grand Champion Platinum title for every 800 GCH points earned. This will
be displayed by a multiplier such as GCHP2. Below is a simple table of the new title abbreviations and the number of
points needed for the title.
Title, Abbreviation and GCH Points Needed:
Grand Champion Bronze, GCHB 100, Grand Champion Silver GCHS200, Grand Champion Gold, GCHG 400 and Grand Champion Platinum, GCHP 800
AKC AGILITY DEPARTMENT
The AKC Agility Department is excited to announce the launch of a new, beginning level agility program called ACT (Agility
Course Test). The ACT program officially launches on March 1, 2016.
This program is designed to introduce beginning dogs and handlers to the sport of agility. There are two classes – ACT 1
and ACT2. Clubs and trainers can adopt the ACT classes as the graduation exercise for their training classes to be held at
their facility thus providing their students a familiar and comfortable setting. The ring size requirements are small enough
that ACT classes can be held in many training facilities across the country. In addition to preparing for these introductory
classes, exhibitors will learn to do things such as to enter an AKC event, check-in at the ring, prepare for their run, and
handle their dog while under judgment. We hope that clubs and trainers will use these classes as learning experiences.
There are several elements of the ACT program that are different from AKC Agility Trials. Eligibility to enter: This program
is for dogs that do not have an AKC Agility title at the Novice level or higher. Dogs may enter ACT2 without having an ACT1
title. Dogs that are not registered/listed with the AKC may participate and their performance will be recorded under a
temporary recording number.
Judges/Evaluators: All AKC agility judges may judge the ACT classes. In addition we will be setting up a system for trainers
and experienced participants to become ACT evaluators. Evaluators may judge ACT classes. Holding ACT events: Any AKC
agility judge/ACT evaluator may hold a stand-alone ACT event. The event does not have to be held by an AKC licensed
club. AKC agility clubs may hold ACT events in conjunction with their trials if they desire. Jump Heights: No jump height
card is required to enter an ACT class. Handlers are encouraged to have their dogs jump at the appropriate height that will
help them prepare for AKC Agility trials. Event Applications: Clubs or judges/evaluators do not need to file an application
for ACT events; there will be no application fee. A $5.00 per entry recording fee for all dogs entered will be submitted with
the results. Courses: Evaluators and judges will need to submit their courses for review; however, courses may be reused,
which we encourage for ease of administration.
Titles: Dogs must receive two passing scores to earn each of the ACT titles. Dogs are required to be fully registered/listed
in order to be awarded a title. There will be an ACT page on the AKC website where forms and information can be accessed. We have also set up a mailbox for the ACT program act@akc.org. ACT related questions can be sent to this mailbox. Please see the regulations and other information as it becomes available on the ACT web page that can be accessed
through the Agility Home Page.

Five Reasons to Consider Fish Oil Supplementation for Your Dog

Fish oil is certainly a popular supplement these days for health conscious people. There are many

proven benefits, and we now know that many of these same benefits also apply to our canine companions.

As the name implies, fish oil is derived from marine animals and is a rich source of omega-3 fatty
acids. Animals cannot manufacture these fatty acids on their own; they must be consumed in the

Mackerel, tuna, salmon, sturgeon, mullet, bluefish, anchovies, sardines, herring, trout, and menhaden are all loaded to the gills (pun intended) with omega-3’s, and they are common sources of fish
oil supplements. The fatty acids with the greatest health benefits are docosaxaenoic acid (DHA) and

eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). Both are ingredients found on the labels of fish oil supplements.

Five known benefits of fish oil supplementation for dogs
Based on the documented benefits of fish oil, veterinarians recommend its use as a nutraceutical (a
food that provides medicinal benefit) for the following common canine maladies.
Boykin Spaniel Rescue
Arthritis
The anti-inflammatory properties of omega-3 fatty acids are responsible for their therapeutic benefit
for dogs with arthritis. In a study of 127 dogs with arthritis, those fed a diet supplemented with omega
-3 fatty acids showed significant improvement in their abilities to rise from a resting position, play, and
walk. Prescription diets made specifically for dogs with arthritis are heavily supplemented with fish oil.
Inflammatory skin disease
Allergic skin disease and other inflammatory skin conditions have the potential to benefit from the anti
-inflammatory effects of fish oil. A study was performed on 16 dogs with itchy skin. Compared to the
placebo group, those receiving fish oil demonstrated significant improvement (less itching, less selftrauma, and improved hair coat).
Another study performed on dogs with varying stages of skin allergies demonstrated that fish oil was
more effective for dogs who were in the earliest stages of their skin problems compared to those with
more advanced disease.
If you are interested in saving a
Treatment of canine cognitive dysfunction
Canine cognitive dysfunction is a well-recognized syndrome of older dogs that, in many ways, resemBoykin, visit the Boykin Spaniel

human dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

A study was performed on 142 older dogs with a variety of behavioral abnormalities (disorientation,
disrupted sleep patterns, altered interactions with family members, altered activity levels, and loss of

improvement in every one of these behavior categories.
Treatment of heart disease
Profound weight loss is a common symptom in dogs with chronic heart failure, and is associated with decreased survival times. A study was performed on dogs with heart failure, some of whom were fed fish oil. The dogs receiving the fish oil supplementation experienced longer survival times
and less weight loss compared to those on a fish oil-free diet.
Treatment of kidney disease
Fish oil supplementation has proven benefit in dogs with glomerular disease, a kidney disorder resulting in excessive protein loss in the urine. Glomerular disease is often associated with kidney failure.
In a study of dogs with glomerular disease, dietary supplementation with fish oil was shown to significantly slow the progression of the kidney damage. Additionally, fish oil has been shown to have a protective effect against acute injury to the kidneys. For this reason, fish oil supplementation is
reasonable to consider for any dog with compromised kidney function.
Fish Oil Precautions
Let the buyer beware. Not all over the counter fish oil supplements are created equal. In a study of 51 best-selling fish oil products in the United
States, 21 of them varied in their DHA and EPA concentrations by more than 10 percent compared to their label claims.
Careful attention to the dose of fish oil for a dog is important. Too much fish oil can produce adverse side effects such as diarrhea, blood clotting abnormalities, delayed wound healing, vitamin E deficiency, weight gain, and altered immune system function. Lastly, fish oil has the potential to produce problematic interactions with some other medications, particularly nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications.
Questions for your veterinarian
Thinking of getting your dog started on a fish oil supplement? Before you do, I encourage you to discuss this idea with your veterinarian. Here are
some questions to be sure to ask. Does my dog have a disorder that might benefit from fish oil supplementation? What dosage should I give?
What brand of fish oil do you recommend? Is fish oil supplementation compatible with the other medications I am giving my dog? Do you give a fish oil supplement to your dog? If so, what is the reason?
