When K-9 Solo, a member of the Monmouth
County Sheriff’s Office, was shot to death in the line of
duty on June 5, 1998, the Associated Humane
Societies became the driving force to outfit every law
enforcement K-9 in New Jersey with a bullet-resistant
vest.
Thanks to hundreds of donors, school children, civic
and social groups, and law enforcement groups, the
Society has been able to outfit over 1,000 law enforcement K-9’s in N.J. and around the country.

Protect the Paws is a group that works in conjunction with
the Vested Interest Fund. They raised the funds to help
Pluto and Thor, two canine members of the Miami Police
Department. The group contacted AHS and arrangements
were made to have two vests sent to protect the police
officers’ faithful partners.

The Society’s Mobile Spay/Neuter van has been busy traveling around the state to help with low
cost spay/neuter, wellness visits and routine veterinary services. The Wellness Clinics offer pet
owners check-ups, dental cleanings, ear cleanings, heartworm tests, Lyme, FIV/FeLV, deworming,
microchipping and more for their pets. These efforts are brought to local communities where
residents may be less likely to bring their animals for vet care. For more information on having

27 ANIMALS SIGNED UP FOR “THE HOBBIT”
DIED & MORE INJURED
The Hobbit: Unexpected Journey is a new adventure movie set in a fantasy
world. The production company acknowledged that horses, goats, chickens
& one sheep died at a farm near Wellington, New Zealand where about
150 animals were housed for the trilogy. Rainbow the pony was run off an
embankment and found the next morning with a broken neck & back &
was euthanized. Several horses, goat & sheep allegedly died during production. Peter Jackson is well known for computer-generated imagery &
did not need the use of live animals. American Humane monitored the
“intense animal action” but does not consider those that were not on the
set. When production was moved to New Zealand, AHA was advised that
animals died while on a farm used for housing. None of the animals in
question died during filming action or were being used as animal actors
when they died. A wrangler hired as a horse trainer was concerned that
the farm was full of “death traps”. The Hobbit-related injuries & deaths
occurred 186 miles from the main set & 26 miles from the sound stage.
AHA made recommendations about fencing, housing, etc. but their jurisdiction does not encompass offset activities
DADE CITY’S WILD THINGS ZOO
ENCOURAGES SWIM WITH TIGER CUBS
Dade City’s Wild Things is a Florida zoo that allows patrons to swim with
tiger cubs. The zoo received $200 per person for a 30 minute encounter.
Tigers are not swimmers & must constantly move in order to stay afloat.
So they endure long, exhausting swims with strangers, loud children, etc .
In Sept. 2011, Dade City’s Wild Things was cited by the U. S. Dept. of
Agriculture for violating a federal law that prohibits the handling of their
cubs in a manner that causes unnecessary discomfort or stress. Yet owner
Kathy Stearns continues to offer these encounters, perpetuating animal

TWO DOLPHINS IMPRISONED FOR
TOURISTS RELEASED INTO FREEDOM
Tom & Misha are two bottlenose dolphins captured & imprisoned in a
tiny tank in Hisaronu, Turkey. They
were denied everything natural to
them & forced to perform for
tourists. Although the future looked
bleak, Born Free Foundation of
Britain embarked on a campaign &
along with PETA & Turkish animal
rights groups, they dolphin duo were
released to a marine reserve in the Mediterranean Sea to prepare them
for life in the ocean. Because of the stress of intensive confinement,
the dolphins were weak, underweight & lethargic when they arrived.
After 2 years of nurturing, they are healthier & strong & starting to
catch fish on their own.
Update: Tom & Misha were released back into the ocean & within
hours, were already chasing & hunting fish together & socializing with
other dolphins. The release was kept secret to avoid human interference with their progress. Satellite transmitters were affixed to their dorsal fins and show that since the release, the pair have already traveled
hundreds of miles & are healthy & eating well.
According to PeTA, if you love dolphins, please do not pay for them to
be imprisoned & tormented in swim-with-dolphin exhibitions. There
are programs such as John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park in the
Florida Keys. They allow you to interact with dolphins in their home –
on their terms.

PENNSYLVANIA BANS
ANIMAL GAS CHAMBERS
On Oct. 24, 2012, Gov. Tom Corbett signed into law a ban on animal
gas chambers. It is illegal to kill animals by use of carbon monoxide gas,
chloroform, ether, halothane, flurothane, drowning or any means
deemed unacceptable by the American Veterinary Medical Assoc. The
use of a high altitude decompression chamber or decompression device
was already illegal. Unfortunately, an exception is made for animals
subject to normal agricultural operations. The new law already excluded
medical & veterinary schools & research facilities associated with a
hospital or university. All devices or chambers made illegal by this law
must be dismantled.
PRINCETON DOG TRAINER CHARGED
WITH 6 COUNTS OF ANIMAL CRUELTY IN
BEATING DEATH OF DOG
When Tracy Stanton’s dog Shyanne nipped someone, a friend recommended a dog trainer for her German Shepherd mix. The Lawrence Township
resident was persuaded to leave the dog with Michael Rosenberg, a
Princeton Township resident. After two days at Rosenberg’s place, Stanton
was called to pick up the dog who needed to go to the vet. By the time
she arrived at the emergency vet hospital, Shyanne was unresponsive.
Shyanne’s owner requested an autopsy and the results showed that
Shyanne had four broken ribs and a punctured lung resulting from blunt
force trauma. Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office Casey DeBlasio stated that
Michael Rosenberg is charged with six counts of animal cruelty resulting
in the death of Shyanne. No court date has been scheduled.
WASHINGTON MAN ACCUSED OF
OPERATING BESTIALITY FARM
Doug Spink has been arrested after officials allegedly caught him running a “bestiality farm” in Washington State, near the Canadian border.
He allegedly kept horses, dogs & mice which he provided to visitors who
wanted to engage in sexual acts with animals. More than two years ago,
he allegedly kept four stallions, seven large breed male dogs & a cage
full of mice coated in a “lubricant” along with videotapes. Back in 2010
Whatcom County Prosecutor Dave McEachran chose not to pursue animal
cruelty charges. As we go to press, Douglas Spink was arraigned Dec. 7th
in Whatcom County. Prosecutors are seeking to ban Spink for life from
owning animals if convicted. He contests Washington’s bestiality law
calling it a “witch hunt”.
FEDS BRING FIRST CASE UNDER NEW
“ANIMAL CRUSH” VIDEO LAW
Public Law 106-152 was enacted in 1999, primarily to target “crush videos”
which depicted people crushing small animals to gratify a sexual fetish.
Because it excluded prosecution of any depiction that had serious religious,
political, scientific, artistic value, etc., courts were concerned of the violation of the First Amendment. And so Rep. Elton Gallegly (R-CA) introduced
a new bill with much more specific language. It is now Public Law 111-294
Brent Justice & Ashley Richards of Houston, TX were indicted by a federal
grand jury & distributing animal crush videos. Justice & Richards are in
federal custody until they stand trial. Among the horrors experienced were
the slashing of the throat of a puppy & then beheading by a meat cleaver,
torture & killing of a cat and other videos included mice, puppies, kittens,
rabbits slowly tortured to death for sexual gratification of fetishists A judge
had to stop the reading of the court documents as the details were too
graphic. We will notify our readers as the matter is adjudicated.

Fizzoli was a Miniature Yorkie owned by a Florida couple
who had no children – and he was their son. Last August,
Fizzoli was diagnosed with Hemmoraghic Gastoenteritis.
The 4 year old dog was seizuring, bleeding & after three
vets monitored Fizzoli every 10 minutes, they knew it was
time …..
The vet brought Fizzoli into Josh & Rena Ortiz to be with
them one last time. “I held him close, kissed him & sang to
him a song my grandmother sang to me as a child. It
always soothed me so I prayed it soothed him. I wept over
his seizing body …. asking the vet to hurry up. It’s time. I
got real close to his face, kissed him on his hot dry nose &
began to whisper that childhood lullaby in his ears. He
stopped breathing in my arms as the vet came in to give
him the shots. The vet wept & administered the shots, just
to make sure it was done as quickly as possible. His stiff
body relaxed into me & I held him & sang to my son for
the next 45 minutes. I told him I was sorry, sorry for not
being more diligent. And vowing to spend every breath I

When vegetarian Inder Bedi was a university student in Montreal, he abandoned his
thought of law school & started a vegan leather handbag business instead. That was in
1995 and now Matt and Nat bags are reasonably priced and sold at hundreds of
retailers and on the internet. The company uses recycled water bottles for linings and
sustainable materials such as cork.
ANN INC. BANS USE OF EXOTIC ANIMAL SKINS
ANN, INC., parent company of Ann Taylor and LOFT has banned the use of exotic
animal skins in its product lines. The newly-revised policy reads: “Our private label
brands do not use real animal fur and do not knowingly sell products with skins
considered to be exotic, including but not limited to alligator, crocodile and ostrich”.
This policy was brought about after a meeting with PETA. ANN, INC. joins Mango,
H&M, Victoria’s Secret, and PUMA who are among those adopting animal welfare
policies that ban exotic animal skins. In Africa, Asia, and the U.S., exotic animals—
including snakes and lizards—are hunted or raised and killed specifically for their
skins. Alligators and crocodiles are stabbed in the neck with a metal chisel or
bludgeoned with metal bats. PETA Asia's undercover investigations found live snakes
nailed to trees by their heads before their skin was torn off their writhing bodies.
HALF A MILLION PYTHON SKINS USED
IN FASHION INDUSTRY
According to TRAFFIC, a new study shows that
over half a million python skins are exported
annually from Southeast Asia. The main importer
is the European fashion & leather industry & is
worth an estimated $1 billion every year.
Indonesia, Malaysia & Viet Nam are the main
sources of exports with European Union countries
as the biggest importers; namely Italy, Germany
& France. Around 790% of the skins are reexported via Singapore. A substantial proportion
of the skins are sourced illegally from wild animal
& using false permits to launder the skins.

AHS RESCUES STRAY SHELTIE WITH BURDENSOME TUMORS
This sweet-faced Sheltie came in as a stray, dragging a huge pendulous mass that made walking difficult.The mass has been removed and she is ready
to walk into your heart. File 113843 (Newark).
She may have once been a treasured pet but neglect had allowed a group of skin
tumors to grow which has impeded her gait. The tumors were removed over a large
area of skin and the beautiful, well-mannered lass has had relief from the growths
interfering with her movement. The young Sheltie, estimated to be about 2-3 years
old, was found as a stray. She had a microchip but it was never registered. She is a
mild-mannered miss who deserved a more responsible and caring owner. We call
her Foxy and thanks to the kind donations to our Res-Q Fund, we are able to give
her the much-needed veterinary care, recuperative efforts, and oversight to help her
and the many needy animals that come through our doors.

Turtles in Trouble ...
GRAND CAYMAN’S TURTLE TOURIST ATTRACTION
HOUSES TURTLES IN APPALLING CONDITIONS
An investigation of a well known tourist
attraction in Grand Cayman Island revealed
that they are currently housing 7,000 endangered sea turtles in appallingly inadequate
conditions in order to satisfy the demand for
turtle meat. According to the World Society
for Protection of Animals, (WSPA,) it shows
the commercial sea turtle farming operation
as a poor and outdated model . The turtles
are kept in dirty, cramped touch tanks in the
public tourist areas of the farm. They swim in

water filled with their own waste, they fight
for food; biting each other & even resort to cannibalism due to the extreme stress of
close captivities. Witnesses saw turtles with missing flippers, chewed off by tank
mates. The turtles suffering from disease & birth defects are kept away from tourists
& are raised for meat. Humans are encouraged to touch & pick up the sea turtles &
could be at risk for contacting diseases.

DOGS FROM VIRGINIA HOARDER
The AHS/Popcorn Park was
contacted by the Scott County
VA Humane Society (SCHS)
who pull as many dogs as
possible from a local high-kill
shelter. They advised that they
rescued 10 Chihuahua types
from someone who was either
a backyard breeder or
hoarder. They asked if we
could take them in. Most of
the dogs may not have been
exposed to people; some had
lost their hair; had painfully
long nails & one was pregnant. After seeing the pictures of the
neglected dogs, we were happy to be of service to them and
to these dogs. Ellen & Bob Barker of the SCHS made the lives
of these little dogs much more improved while they were at
their shelter. All of them are now at Popcorn Park and most
are available for adoption. All are spayed/neutered and some
needs further testing regarding hair loss.
No animals at AHS/PP were euthanized to make room for this
group of needy dogs.
BEWARE OF PETCO’S “TURTLE RELINQUISHMENT
PROGRAM”
PETA is urging the public to beware of PETCO’s “Turtle Relinquishment Program” – a
deceptively named ploy to essentially solicit free turtles from unsuspecting people in
order to funnel them back into the pet trade through a meat farm. PETCO announced
that anyone can bring in a turtle of any size to its store then ships those turtles to its
own vendor, Concordia Turtle Farm in Louisiana. PETA has learned that Concordia
exports 80% of its turtles overseas – mostly to China where they grow larger & then
are slaughtered for meat.

The AHS/Popcorn Park was out the door and in the street before, during
and after Superstorm Sandy. The aftermath of the hurricane has left a
wide path of suffering that continues. There were many animals brought
to an Ocean County facility until an owner could be located. In many
instances, either an owner was not located or could not take back a pet.
During the
hurricane,
the Society
was alerted
by Keansburg
police to
two dogs left
tied in a yard.The ACO jumped the fence & rescued both.They were returned
to the safety of the AHS facility. Mork & Mindy are now hoping for a chance at

The AHS/PP staffers have also been
active in delivering pet food that
had been donated to us and distributing them to churches, civic
groups, animal shelters for pet
owners who can ill-afford to purchase pet food. (See page 20) You
can either drop off pet food donations at any of our shelters or send
a donation for Hurricane Sandy to
help with the resources needed to
our Newark or Forked River facilities or donate on our web site at
ahscares.org and indicate it’s for
pet food.
Pugsley was found at the height of the
storm tied up near the Seaside Heights
Bridge. Not only had he missed several
meals, he required entropic eye surgery.
Donations to our Res-Q Fund helped us
to have Pugsley’s eyes fixed; he has also
been neutered. Since he arrived, his tail
has not stopped wagging! File L-22053NM (Forked River).
The 3 year old Border Collie mix lived
with her family in Union Beach – one of
the hardest hit communities in
Monmouth County.The family is moving
& Alice doesn’t live here anymore. She
had to stay behind. His family advises
that she does not get along with other

were left behind.

BLEACH POURED ON DOGS IN
DOMESTIC VIOLENCE ACTION
This depressed duo had been abused in a domestic violence situation that
occurred on July 5th. Kali and Flash are now available for adoption.
Kali and Flash came to the Society on July 5th when Newark Police brought in
the pair as strays. The Police Officer stated that someone had thrown bleach on
the dogs. They were very wet with a strong smell of chlorine bleach. They were
immediately taken to the Medical Dept. as both dogs were breathing heavily with
acute eye irritation and vomiting. They were given medical care and watered
down internally and externally. Our veterinary staff monitored the pair daily to
insure that there were no complications or lasting effects.
After a brief investigation, the Society discovered that it was a domestic violence
situation and the matter has still not been adjudicated due to postponements. An
investigation by the Society’s Animal Control Officer revealed that the house in
which the dogs had lived was boarded up. Phone calls to a cell phone were not
responded to. Since that time, the owner has come in and released Kali & Flash to the Society.
Kali was recently given a temperament evaluation & she holds no anger to humans. She loves belly rubs &
toys! She took every single toy & collected them in a pile. She and Flash are “roomies” and are hoping the
New Year brings a great future. File 110591-NM & File 110590-F (Newark).

has solved their health issues.Their delight at
being walked, handled and evaluated indicate
they hold no anger or resentment to people.
PREGNANT PIT FROM GEORGIA RESCUED BY SOCIETY
When we received an urgent plea to help a needy emaciated Georgia peach in late term pregnancy, we
couldn’t truly understand the extent of hardships and suffering she had gone through, nor the misery
she would yet have to deal with. She was at an animal control facility where euthanasia was imminent.
Thankfully, a bully breed rescue interceded & took pity on her.
Popcorn Park opened its doors to the pit bull who must have had a rough life and clearly, had had
numerous litters. A transport was coming from Georgia to the Northeast to deliver many animals and
they could include Dixie.
Dixie made the trip without delivering her pups, but within two days of her arrival, she gave birth to
14 pups. She was emaciated, ribs and hip bones protruded. Dixie was so physically depleted that her
15th pup never made it out of the birth canal. Three of her pups
died within the first day. She was loaded with life-threatening hookworms and other intestinal parasites; she was coughing & had nasal
discharge. To add to her misery, she was found to be heavily infested with heartworm.
Because Dixie had to be on a number of medications to insure her
own survival, we had to remove her surviving pups. Our staff start- Only hours after her arrival in NJ, she was so emacied to nurse them. It saddened us to separate her from her pups,

Our rescue of Dixie has been one of disappointment, distress & heartache for a dog
who deserved so much more than she was given in her life prior to her coming to us.
Dixie’s story has stirred our deep-seated love and brought many tears, but it renews
the reason we do shelter work. It has inspired & motivated us to work harder for those
that will need us in the future.
Your donations continue to help in the intensive care being given to Dixie and her
pups. Our Res-Q Fund resources are for them and those animals that will come after

Meet Fay & Alex, littermates who came to the Society as kittens when their mother was
killed. They were adopted out together, but sadly, their owner has become ill and life as

I was wandering the streets of Kearny one day, just strolling
about in the most contented way. Not an owner in sight, which
didn’t bother me, but the
residents weren’t used to
such a strange pet roaming free. Next thing you
know, the police arrived
on the scene; they caught
me and found me neither
wild nor mean.Then came
a trailer from Popcorn
Park; and to this lovely
place I did embark. My
name? It was 9/11 when I
was found; I honor the
patriots in the best
country around.

HOOVER THE GOAT
We rescued this young
male goat from North
Bergen. Judging from his
attire, he was going to be
used in a ritual sacrifice,
but he either escaped or
was let go.
He was in extremely poor
shape when we rescued
him, but at least he was
alive. He had an upper respiratory infection, runny
nose and was emaciated.
He was immediately placed under the care of the Popcorn Park veterinary
staff, and for the first few days, his head was buried in the hay and grain we
gave him.We named him Hoover as he inhaled every bit of food possible.
Thanks to the good care he received, Hoover made a complete recovery. He is so sweet ... how can it be he has only one
sponsor? Could you send some Valentine’s love for Hoover to
vacuum up?
CAMILLE THE COUGAR
Camille is one of 7 big cats we rescued from Texas in July
2011. A woman had kept 40 big cats as 'pets', and when she
passed away suddenly, the animals, kept in deplorable
conditions, were abandoned. Through Insync Exotics, we
heard about the situation and were able to make room for 7
big cats.We paid for a temperature-controlled transport
truck to bring them up from Texas to Popcorn Park, where
they were given health exams, inoculations and other needed
vet work. Sadly, our beautiful Camille does not have one
sponsor to call her own. She is doing well and would gladly
give you her heart if you would just sponsor her.
Two of her cougar buddies, Lance and Gwen, are also sorely
in need of sponsors.
BONNIE MACAW
Bonnie is a Green-Winged Macaw who came to us in 2006 along with her
bonded mate, Clyde. Their owner was moving and said they were too big to
move; she asked if Popcorn Park would take them in. Bonnie was then 3 years
old. Clyde passed away in October 2008, leaving his best friend feeling quite
alone. Bonnie's a sweetheart of a girl and has only one sponsor to be her
buddy. Can you share your heart with Bonnie? She would love
someone to be there for her. We're hoping it will be you.
PARK WILDLIFE CLUB
POPCORN
If you haven’t yet been to Popcorn Park, come down and visit! Our
unique sanctuary caters to wildlife, farm animals, exotics and birds
that have been abused, abandoned, exploited, injured, handicapped, etc. The park is open daily from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. On
Thanksgiving, Christmas & New Year’s Day, Popcorn Park closes at
2 p.m. so that staff can be with their families.
Our current admission fee is $5 for adults, and $4 for children under
12 and senior citizens.
If you would like to support one of our residents, the donation cost
is only $4.00 a month, for which you will receive a color photo of
your animal and an update every 4 months, (which includes a holiday card), a membership card, plus free admission to Popcorn Park
with presentation of your card. For a copy of the Popcorn Park
Wildlife Club booklet to help you choose the animal you wish to
sponsor, order on Page 21.
You can also sponsor the Popcorn Park residents on our website at
www.popcornparkzoo.org and click on Wildlife Club. There is no
required time limit – you can sponsor for as long as you’d like. Any

LAST YEAR’S CHRISTMAS GIFT MISTREATED

When three stray
shepherd mixes
arrived at the
Society’s Newark
facility, the 3 year
old female was
brought to the
Medical
Department for a
check-up as she had
3 legs. A young
female pup about
10 months old and
her brother were
brought to the kennel area where they
were to be held as
strays for 7 days.

Alice, the older female, was quiet, withdrawn and was going to be evaluated
for her depressive state. At the same time, another volunteer brought out
Abby, the 10 month old youngster who came in with her and was scheduled
for evaluation. They saw each other after being separated for almost a week!
It was a mother and daughter reunion that left everyone teary eyed and
determined that if at all possible, this duo should remain together. Luckily,
the Perehinec Family of Clifton adopted mother and daughter and sent us
these charming pictures.
Alice, the three-legged mama &
her daughter Abby were together. Alice went into a severe state
of depression when she was separated from Abby. Luckily, & by
divine intervention, they met as
they were both being brought
outside at the same time. It is
our policy to try and keep families together.

Last year, Roscoe was someone’s unwanted holiday gift &
surrendered to the Society.This year, Roscoe is spending Christmas
with a brand new family & 2 older sisters.
Roscoe’s owner complained to friends & co-workers about a pup they
purchased for the son as a Christmas gift. He really didn’t want the dog
– and it showed by the way the dog was treated by the son and the
father. They finally decided to get rid of the dog by bringing the 1 year
old Lab Retriever to Popcorn Park. The ill-treated dog shook
uncontrollably, cowered and cringed when touched. With patience and
love by the staff, he learned to trust.
The Bodak Family of South River visited Roscoe on several visits before
he felt comfortable enough with them to allow them to pet him.
Thankfully, all of the time and effort spent with Roscoe has paid off!
The Bodaks advised that after 2 months, his life has changed …. and so
has his name. He now goes by the name Jameson. He has 2 older sisters, and loves Sarah, the Golden Retriever adopted from Popcorn Park
about 8 years ago. The trio tire themselves out with playtime … and
then it is naptime. Jameson is still a little shy around new people. This

be a lifechanging
time for a

Over two years ago in Oct. 2010,
Popcorn Park took in nine dogs
from a Georgia rescue. From the
moment this group pranced off
the van, we were excited to give
all these special dogs the second
chance in life they deserved.
One by one, each of these wonderful dogs got adopted ...
except Dan, who just kept getting overlooked. He was young,
fun, affectionate and one of the
happiest dogs patiently waiting
for “a new leash on life”. You
could not pass him by when on a
walk without stopping by to say
hello and get one of his famous
hugs! We just couldn't figure out
why no one was seeing in him

beyond words and both congratulate and thank Dan’s happy new “parents”
for making his dreams, (and ours), come true!

it all, we continued to
treat each problem as it
arose. When it seemed
that we were all through
with the medical issues, no
one seemed interested in
adopting him! Finally –
after Rocky spent almost
3 years at Popcorn Park,
the Wentzel Family of
Millville, NJ were attracted to the Akita mixture.

indicate that he has
become a wonderful family pet who has finally
found a lifetime of love!

Jake has a magnificent home and loving family. He came in from North
Carolina with the name “Henry”. Jonathan Whitney of Toms River met the cattle dog mixture and after he got to know the Southern gentleman, decided to
adopt him. According to Jon: “Jake is doing great. He loves his new life here.
When his mom & dad are busy with work, his aunt/grandpa/grandma, pick
him up and take him for long walks in the park. He is a great dog and he
craves attention. Sometimes too much. But we love him more than anything”.
Thanks to their kindness, this is a real family affair love fest! Sorry – we can’t

A handsome English Bulldog was hitchhiking
on a busy road.When someone opened their
car to drive away, Capone jumped in! The
obliging motorist drove him to the Society’s
Tinton Falls facility…. but he didn’t want to

UNITED KINGDOM
When an undercover film showed an elephant
being kicked & hit with a pitchfork by a groom at
the circus, (see story on page 23), it was one of
the factors behind a unanimous vote in the Commons last year to ban
the use of wild animals in traveling circuses. Eight months after it
pledged to outlaw the practice, the Government has failed to produce
any detailed plans to implement the promised ban.
COSTA RICA
The government has provisionally approved the first law in Central
America to ban hunting for sport. The reforms to its existing Wildlife
Conservation Law would still permit subsistence hunting of animals for
scientific research & sport fishing.
SCOTLAND
Scientists at Heriot-Watt University are working towards creating the
world’s first artificial human liver for drug testing to drastically cut the
number of live animals used & get lifesaving medicines into the clinic
faster. The team aims to demonstrate how an artificial liver created using
human cells could become a new testing platform for drug discovery &
development. Currently, testing new drugs requires large numbers of
experimental animals. This is expensive, time consuming & often, inconclusive.
INDIA
The government shut down a stall at the Sangai Festival in Imphal after it
was reported selling dishes made of porcupine & wild pig, and the meat
was confiscated. Wild boar & porcupine are listed as endangered animals
in provisions of the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972. An animal group
also rescued nearly 50 migratory birds from two poachers including spotted owl & other varieties of wading birds. Seven of the rescued birds died
of severe injuries caused by the traps used by poachers. The birds would
be released after consulting with forest authorities & the group appealed
to hotel owners not to buy migratory birds.
NEW ZEALAND
New Zealand has joined Australia in the International Court of Justice in
a case against Japanese whaling in the Southern Ocean So far, diplomatic initiatives have failed to halt Japanese whaling in the region. Japan
uses scientific whaling to skirt the commercial whaling ban..
According to PETA, a whistleblower discovered that 70 Beagles exported
from China into India and falsely labeled as “pets” are actually to be used
in deadly experiments. PETA India is calling on the Indian government to
conduct an urgent investigation. It has also asked officials to confiscate
the dogs & allow the organization to give them a chance at living in
peace in adoptive homes instead of facing caging, poisoning & death in
a laboratory. The Beagles are being held at Animal Quarantine &
Certification Services in Chennai. Their falsified import paperwork should
render the shipment as illegal.

A one year moratorium was adopted on the construction or operation of any new kennels or breeding operations. The zoning ordinance also puts a
hold in the expansion of existing facilities.
WESTCHESTER COUNTY
The County Board of Legislators unanimously approved a new law that
establishes a county-wide registry for animal abuse offenders. Pet dealers, pet stores & animal shelters would be required to check the registry
before selling an animal. Anyone selling to a registered animal abuser
would be guilty of a Class A misdemeanor.
NEW YORK STATE
State Assemblyman Sean Ryan proposed “Phoenix Law” which would
double the penalties for those convicted of felony aggravated animal
cruelty. The law is named after Phoenix, a puppy set on fire in Buffalo.
One of the teens has pleaded guilty. The bill would raise penalties to
four years in jail and a $10,000 fine.
FEDERAL LEGISLATION
H.R. 198 would create a pilot program for
training dogs, including dogs waiting for adoption in animal shelters, as a form of therapy to
help treat veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder or other post-deployment
mental health conditions. Once trained, the
dogs would assist veterans with disabilities.
A House Bill introduced by Congressman Gerald Connolly (D-VA) aims to
reinstate protection for animals under the Animal Welfare Act that had
been gutted previously. That amendment removed protection for 95% of
animals used in lab testing – rats, mice, birds – who were no longer considered “animals”. These animals have been unprotected by federal law
ever since. Please contact your U. S. Congressmen urging them to support Connolly’s bill.

OVER 300 BIRDS CONFISCATED IN COCKFIGHTING RING IN NEWARK
The Associated Humane Societies’ Newark facility was contacted by
Newark Police and the FBI to be on the scene at a Sussex Ave. residence where it was alleged that animals were raised and trained specifically for cockfighting. According to an SPCA investigator, the location
has all the makings of a cockfighting operation with sophisticated training rooms, drug paraphernalia, a room for prized fighting birds, etc. The
operation was discovered by agents who were investigating
a separate matter.
The Society staffers were there from early morning until late evening to
ensure that the birds were not stolen – only to be put back into the
cockfighting world. Also on the scene was a handsome Labrador
Retriever kept tied up in the yard, as well as a cat – both of whom have
been put up for adoption.

An Animal Rights/Vegan and Vegetarian Club was organized at Thomas S. Wootton
High School in Rockville, Maryland. It will support students who are either vegetarian
or vegan & will encourage others to make alternative diet choices. About 80 people
signed up for the club said Wyatt Oring, 15, a sophomore. They meet every other

SAVE THE SEA
FROM THE
TRASH MONSTER!

Hi! My name is Wyatt. I am nine years
old now. I like ocean sea creatures. But
the ocean has something in it that is very
bad. Now what is that thing? It is yucky
trash. It is very gross. So I decided to help
the sea by making art.
When I was seven, I made a little claymation movie. My movie is called Save
the Sea from the Trash Monster! I wrote
a book about it, too. I also made a lot of
little clay objects and then I had an art
show to raise money for a cool ocean
group that wants to save the ocean, too.
This was my idea: I wanted to sell the clay objects and the book and
get a lot of money like I was rich, but I wasn’t going to keep that money.
I wanted to give that money to Oceana so I can help save the ocean. So I
did.
I like to do things to save the ocean. Now I make other art, like drawings and other things, and I keep selling it all so I can keep helping Oceana
do what they do. I want to be like Martin Luther King, jr., and do something to make the world a better place.
My book tells the story of the Trash Monster who is trying to take over the
ocean. The cute little sea creatures try to stop him but he is very powerful.
I took pictures from my claymation movie and made them into this book
because reading is fun.
It won A&I Books Book of the Month last year and was in Time Magazine
for Kids. Some schools use it in their classrooms, too. That is very nice.

CALIFORNIA
The Los Angeles City Council approved an ordinance that bans the retail sale of dogs, cats and
rabbits, Other California cities that have no retail
sale of animal ordinances are Aliso Viejo, Chula
Vista, Dana Point, Glendale, Hermosa Beach,
Huntington Beach, Irvine, Laguna Beach, South Lake Tahoe & West
Hollywood.
NORTH CAROLINA
The Southern Environmental Law Center has filed a motion for
preliminary injunction & request for expedited hearing n Wake county
Superior Court on behalf of several animal groups asking to stop
spotlight hunting of coyotes at night. This would include the area
inhabited by the world’s only wild population of about 100 red wolves
after one or more of the wolves was killed. The killing of an endangered
red wolf occurred one moth after the Wildlife Resources Commission
allowed spotlight hunting of coyotes.
OHIO
The “Dangerous Wild Animal Act” signed in June became effective Sept.
5th. Owners of constricting snakes larger than 12 feet & other specified
venomous snakes must register the animals & obtain a permit.
RHODE ISLAND
A new law prohibits the tail docking of cows & the use of cruel confinement systems for baby calves & mother pigs.
PENSYVANIA
Dog wardens have conducted nearly 3,000 inspections on the states
2,098 kennels. Wardens have issued over 2,500 citations to dog owners
including commercial kennels not in compliance with the state’s dog law.
The Dept. of Agriculture has been working to shut down illegal kennels
that house 26 or more dogs in a calendar year. One kennel was harboring 187 Chihuahuas. It is working to halt illegal internet sales of dogs
from kennels not licensed or inspected by the state. There were once over
300 commercial kennels in Pennsylvania – now only 51 remain.
MISSOURI
Following the torture deaths of five dogs., St. Louis has formed a task
force to increase public awareness about animal cruelty & hopefully,
increase prosecutions. Lewis Naes, a police officer, has been named the
first full time animal abuse investigator. The task force will partner with
neighborhoods to follow up on reports of abuse & develop cases against
perpetrators.
WASHINGTON
The Snohomish County Council held a public hearing to ban slaughter of
horses & other equines for human consumption. They unanimously
approved the bill & it now goes to Executive Aaron Reardon for his
approval.
MICHIGAN
Gov. Rick Snyder signed three new laws as a clear message to dogfighters. SB356 allows local authorities to seize homes & cars associated with
animal fighting; SB358 adds animal fighting, shooting & baiting to the
list of racketeering crimes; HB 5789 gives law enforcement the ability to
shut down any venue found to be associated with animal fighting &
declare it a nuisance. Experts have identified parts of Michigan as national hotbeds for animal fighting Animal fighting is now a felony punishable by up to 4 years in prison & up to $50,000 in fines.

AHS has been notified by Stuart Goldman, a former investigator with the
SPCA, who advises that practices have taken place in certain Monmouth
County towns where animal control officers are having people “sign off”
on stray cats as “owned” so that they can be rounded up and killed. Stray
cats are being rounded up & killed the same day – they never make it to
the animal shelter. They do not get a 7 day holding period as required by
law. Goldman has filed 17 criminal complaints & 18 civil complaints
which were signed against ACO Sharon Gaboff, ACO Cherlann Ambrose
and ACO John Domic. They are ACOs for Millstone, Manalapan, Freehold
& Freehold Borough. The case is set to be heard January 28th at 9:00

The Animal Legal Defense Fund has fled a petition with the FTC to protect
consumers from deceptive claims made by Bumble Bee, Chicken of the
Sea and Star-Kist who indicate their tuna is totally dolphin-safe, eco-friendly & a necessary part of a healthy diet. Consumers believe “dolphin safe”
believes no dolphins were harmed. Actually the supposed “dolphin-safe”
fishing practices can lead to dolphin injury, disturbance & even death.

The Alabama state legislature has
passed a bill alllowing all types of service dogs, including autism therapy
dogs, in schools across the state. Currently, the law says that someone who
is blind or hearing impaired may be accompanied by a service dog; now,
someone who is diagnosed on the autism spectrum can have a dog.
Further, the dogs don’t have to have their own handlers. As more autistic
children have therapy dogs, and there are more requests to have them in
schools -- and school districts like those in Oregon and Illinois resist -- calls
for legislation like that in Alabama will most likely be heard.

entered GCB & rescued over 600 reptiles & 18,000 rats which were relinquished by the owner. Rats were routinely grabbed by their tails &
slammed into metal posts, racks, tables, walls, etc. Newborn rats were
frozen alive. Rats are referred to as “feeder” animals – bred & sold to be
fed to snakes. These animals were deprived of even the most basic necessities – water, nutritious food, dry bedding, vet care & humane handling.

Mongo of Newark
This beautiful, well-mannered Mastiff
came to the Society as a Newark stray.
A possible owner was contacted but
never came in to see the dog. He was
later sent to Popcorn Park for more
personalized attention. He was quite
the gentleman – even when walked on
a leash. Mongo will give paw and has
no guarding issues.The huge fella is
walked several times a day. Most
recently in a walk adjacent to the facility, Mongo was unexpectedly attacked
by a raccoon which resulted in his
killing it. A rabies check was done on
the raccoon and shown to be positive.
Since the dog had originally been
adopted by a Newark resident, we
called to see if he had any
health/inoculation history. He advised
that the Mastiff was adopted a few
months prior from a rescue group in
western NJ.The previous owner gave us no further information on this socalled rescue group, so we must hold Mongo for a 6 month quarantine due to
rabies exposure. All safety precautions were taken as has been done in the
past. Mongo will be included on the Share-A-Pet Program to offset the

CIRCUS ELEPHANT BAN CONSIDERED
IN LOS ANGELES
Los Angeles City Council Member Paul Koretz is sponsoring a bill to ban
elephants from performing in circuses within the city limits. Six southern
California cities have already banned circus elephants. The Santa Ana Zoo
and the Orange County Fair have both stopped offering elephant rides. A

link to an undercover video taken by Animal Defenders International of
training sessions at “Have Trunk Will Travel”. The 9 minute video includes
shots of elephants being repeatedly stun-gun shocked while standing on
their heads. One of the elephants is Tai who appeared in the hit movie

The Society’s unique SHARE-A-PET PROGRAM is helping many animals thanks to the kindness and generosity of many HUMANE NEWS readers.The animals are placed on the program on the basis of such
details as victims of cruelty, handicap, length of stay, etc. As a result of our efforts, brand new facilities
have been given to these orphans.You can help by “adopting” one of these orphans for $10.00 a month.
In turn, you will receive a color photo and report of your pet every four months, plus a membership card
which entitles you to FREE ADMISSION TO POPCORN PARK.You are also invited to visit your pet,
take him for walks, bring him treats, toys, and even adopt him.
All funds gathered under this program are applied directly to the care of these animals. Any funds that

When walking into our Forked River Waiting Room, you may feel like “it’s a
marshmallow world in the winter” with the big white fluffy cats – Donnie &
Jasper – and a big black fluffy cat – Wylie

It was May 2008 when this stray cat arrived
after he had been found on Rt. 130. No one
ever called or inquired about the mild-mannered gent.After 5 years, we have decided to
include him on the Share-A-Pet Program. He
enjoys seeing the visitors so he has been
viewing the comings and goings from the
Waiting Room. File 16219-NM (Forked

It was 2008 when someone left me at
Popcorn Park’s front door. Attached was a
note that said: “My name is Jasper; please
find me a home”. He was about 5 years old
at the time & he wears his age well! Jasper
can usually be found up front by the cash
register – sleeping soundly! But he’d love to
sleep in the IN box at your home! (Forked
River)
Dusty of Neptune
This mature maiden originally came to the Society as a
stray.The older Sheltie was subdued and submissive, and
through a microchip, we were able to locate her owner.
Some time thereafter, Dusty was again found as a stray
and the proper steps were taken to reunite her with her
owner. But this time, things had changed.The owner
advised that due to lack of funds and a divorce, Dusty was
no longer wanted.The well-mannered lass waited for a bit
of holiday happiness … but Santa never arrived to heal a
broken heart. Her days are spent with the office staff to
help revive a loss of appetite and renew her spirit.We
have included her in the Share-A-Pet Program in the hope
that visitors will come to know her and to aid in her
present despair & dejection. File 72944-F (Tinton Falls).

Donnie of South Carolina
A South Carolina motorist was
traveling with her cat when she
became ill en route. The cat’s
owner was transported to a hospital and at 4 a.m, Popcorn Park
was notified to pick up the cat.
Popcorn Park staffers contacted
the hospital and were given information on nearest relatives. After
a week, the Society contacted the
relatives and left messages but no
one has returned any calls.
Donnie is in our Waiting Room
and looks very much like Jasper who has learned how to fit into the smallest box.
Donnie has been included on the Share-A-Pet Program and hopes that you will
