LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
The Hills to Hawkesbury Living is the magazine for the community. The magazine is kept
going by a dedicated readership and local advertisers, many of whom are small business
owners.
Last week I had the opportunity to attend the annual Hornsby Small Business Evening
run by Matt Kean MP, in conjunction with SmallBiz Matters and the Hornsby Chamber of
Commerce.
I was blown away to discover that in the area there is a small business for every third
household. On top of that, there are approximately forty new small businesses emerging in
the area every week. Amazing. Especially given that 95% of small business fail within the
first five years - who would try such a thing?!
Congratulations to the Hornsby and Ku-ring-gai Women’s Shelter who held their annual
gala night fundraiser. It was a terrific night and look forward to being able to continue to
help in the future.
The next couple of weekends will be a busy. The Hills to Hawkesbury Living magazine
is the local media sponsor for the St Albans Writer’s Festival, which is this Saturday and
Sunday. If you would like to take a look, it is a ticketed event so please give them a call or
check their website. We will also be down at the Orange Blossom Festival and the Glenorie
Country Fair. The following weekend is the Spring Show for the Bromeliad Society and the
Glenorie Farmers Markets.

BUSH WALKS
Living in the Hills District despite
its growing urbanisation it is amazing
just how many bush walks there are
still around. Sure as you go further
north in the Hills district there is still
much farmland and National Park
bush areas
Even in the southern portions of
what I call the greater Hills district
you will find remnants of bush in
gullies and alongside the creeks and
streams that flow through the area.
Now our little dog loves going
exploring and following the various
waterways that go through the area.
Some of her favourite spots include
following Toongabbie Creek through
Torry Burn Reserve and Sophia Doyle
Reserve at Baulkham Hills and also
following the creek further along
through William Joyce Reserve to
Sierra Place Park.
Another favourite area is following
Excelsior Creek and Saw Mill Creek
to Darling Mills Creek through
Excelsior Park. If you want to go
further, the bush walks in Excelsior
Park can take you through to North
Rocks, Northmead and virtually to
North Parramatta..
Not far from home is yet another,
the bush walk that goes through
Model Farms Park, starting at either

radio program that celebrates the
wonderful spectrum of talented
musicians and performers in
Australia. With a playlist of 100%
Australian artists from blues
and roots, folk, cool country,
instrumental, jazz, surf rock and
alternate rock genres, Austrlaian
singer songwriters are always
welcome.
The show features a studio guest
every week that is an active artist
on the Sydney music scene. In the
seven years the show has been
running Ross has interviewed
over 300 artists. These have varied
from new and emerging singersongwriters with their first album to
established legends in music. Many
artists have chosen the Alive 90.5
FM Australian Spectrum Show to
launch their new EPs and albums.
Some of the highlights have included
Russel Morris’s previous album
“Van Diemen’s Land”, Jeff Duff’s
a walk. When I find the remnants of
an old wall or a dam that may have
been built back in the early days of
settlement. I wonder who built it and
for what purpose.

Hills you can follow Quarry Creek
down through Northmead where
it joins Toongabbie Creek and
eventually becomes the head waters
of the Parramatta River.
If you live in Castle Hill then you
may wish to walk the bush in Fred
Caterson Reserve alongside Cattai
Creek.
Now what has all this talk about
Bush Walks have to do with
memories? As you walk through the
bush your mind can wander back to
the early days of settlement, when
pioneering families established their
farms in the area. Along the creeks
you may find remnants of dams built
to service the farms or the quarries
at Northmead. You can imagine the
children of the early families playing
and swimming in the creeks. Or you
may imagine the fauna that once
was common in the district such
as Platypus swimming and nesting
along the banks of the creeks or
the fish that once would have been
found there. On some of our walks
with our dog alongside the creeks
we have heard the sound of bellbirds
high in the trees, something that
now seems to be missing from
many backyards in the area. So you
can well imagine the abundance of
wildlife that was once throughout
the area.
You would be walking through
some of the properties that once were
owned by the pioneering families of
the district. Those of the Kentwells,
the Pyes, the Suttors, the Doyles and
the Joyce families. In fact your mind
may even take you back to the days
before European settlement and
back to the days of the Aboriginal
times as you picture the Aboriginal
warriors standing on rocks in the
streams or on the banks with their
wooden spears, looking for fish or
other animal life with which to feed
their families. I often wonder about
the cubby houses children of the past
would have built amongst the trees
or rocks as I have walked along the
various tracks.
Perhaps your imagination may even
stretch to the days of bushrangers.
When you could imagine them hiding
out amongst the rocks and planning
their next raid. Yes the Hills district
was not immune from bushrangers.
In fact they were known to be in the
North Rocks area.
There is no doubt that taking a bush
walk through the area can generate
memories and also remind yourself
of your own childhood of swimming
in the creeks or building a cubby
house in the bush and the feeling of
adventure as you discover new and
exciting things. That is a feeling that
I still enjoy when taking our dog for

LIVING LEGENDS
MARIE AND
HARLAND KERR
This is the final instalment in
our three part series on Marie and
Harland Kerr who worked in the
Philippines and Papua New Guinea
(PNG) with the local people, meeting
their needs and translating parts of
the bible into their native languages.
In our last episode we learnt how
Harland took the Yapera, chief of the
Wriu tribe in PNG, on a world tour
in 1971. Before meeting the Kerrs
the chief had lived practically in the
Stone Age. He had never seen a steel
axe let alone a 747 aircraft.
The Kerrs had established their
new home at what was initially
the men’s hamlet of Bolona among
the Witu people of PNG in 1960.
The Witu were one of the most
isolated and unreached tribes in
PNG. Harland and Marie now had
a young family of two daughters,
Bronwyn and Anita. Marie’s work
load soon increased substantially.
When Bronwyn reached school
age she had to be home-schooled.
Apart from housework, without our
modern appliances in the jungle
of PNG, Marie also ran a literacy
program on the lawn of their home.
Marie produced her first literacy
materials using the knowledge she
had accumulated from the Cotabato
Manobo of the Philippines where
she and Harland had worked during
1955 and 1956. She produced leaflets,
folded into two pages, for the Witu
literacy teaching program. Each
leaflet had exactly the same layout.
The order in which the teaching
leaflets were given to the students
was marked by an arrow notation,
working with sets of four. Once a
student had become literate they
were encouraged to teach one, or
at the most two, friends or relatives
to read and write Witu. This was
done using the same materials they
had been given by Marie Kerr just as
she taught them to read and write.
As a result between 1960 and 1971
many of the Witu became literate
through Marie’s program. When
Anita reached school age, the home
schooling responsibility also doubled.
Marie had trained as a nurse at RPA
and ran a small clinic from their
home in the Witu. On some days,
Marie was treating as many as 50
patients. Sometime later the first
the Lutheran Mission opened a small
health clinic in the area, although this
was still a ninety minute walk away.
Later the government took over all
medical work.
In 1972 Anita was so sick that their
doctor ordered the family back to
Sydney for treatment. Marie had
severe back pain. Harland had lost
his voice on the world tour with
the chief and now had a larynx
problem. The problem was so bad
that to treat it, the doctors had to
remove a rib and half of his larynx.
Harland also sustained damage from
the metal tube in his throat during
the operation. The family, now in
Sydney, was under pressure with
numerous health issues and very little
income. After recovery, Harland took
a job at Sydney University lecturing
twice a week. This earned the
family $60 a week. The equivalent
of $584 today. The family lived at
Marie’s parents house in Ashbury
because they could not afford to rent
or buy. Eventually after two years
the young Kerr family had to seek
alternative accommodation. Due
to their meagre income their search
led them to the rural outskirts of
Sydney to Dural. After six months
of negotiating with a local real estate
agent and a landlord in Dural, the
family were able to settle on renting
a nice house at Round Corner.
However on the day they were to
collect the keys, the deal fell through,
the agent had led them on. Harland
was despondent, where would his
family live? Fifteen minutes after
being told by the agent they would
not be accommodated, the phone
rang. It was Arthur Nicolson. Arthur
and Betty Nicolson owned a stone
fruit farm in Forest Glen, Glenorie.
Harland and Arthur’s grandfathers
had known each other and Harland
had visited the Glenorie Mission
Church to speak once before leaving
for PNG. Arthur asked Harland
if he would like some stone fruit
and enquired about how the new
house was going. After hearing the
unfortunate news Arthur offered
the Kerr family a fruit
picker’s cottage on his own
property which had just
been vacated after the fruit
picking season.
So it came to be that
Glenorie, in the Hills
District, became a place
where the Kerrs would
establish their “base of
operations” from 1974.
They connected with the
local Glenorie Mission Church and
other local Christians who as they
heard about the Kerr’s mission started
to assist and support them.
Many wonderful locals of the
district pitched in to help the
young family. Cecil Christie (a local
orchardist whose descendants still
run orchards in the Canoelands
area) donated a significant sum of
money to the Kerrs. With this money
the Kerrs were able to purchase a
transportable building. Arthur Field
and Les Schwebel (two well-known
builders in the district) erected a
small additional building to the fruit
picker’s cottage.
Over the eleven years in the Witu,
Harland had gathered masses of
language data. Harland never elicited
data. He only gathered words and
language delivered to him naturally.
He kept copious notes of words
spoken, by who, when and what
context. Harland could now start to
decipher the language.
By now Chief Yapera was a
widower. With support from the
Kerrs, the chief and his second son
Utia came to Forest Glen where
they became the first of many native
translators to work on the translation
project. The chief and his son stayed
for a year. They were followed by
multiple visits from other tribesmen
(Kelly, Kepu, Ita, Mini, Paea) who
became fondly regarded the locals of
Glenorie. In 1988 the translation of
the New Testament into Witu was
complete. In these years, Marie and
Harland would return to PNG every
two years for a few months and there
was a constant flow of tribesmen to
Glenorie to assist in the work. During
this time other Australians would
also assist in the work. An Australian,
Graham Collier used his drawing
skills to him illustrate literacy
booklets for the Witu.
Through the translation of the
bible into the Witu language Harland
made an amazing discovery. At first
he could not believe it was possible
and was very cautious in mentioning
his findings. Harland found five very
special words contained within the
Witu language that essentially told
the same story contained in the bible
we have. Here was one of the most
isolated and preserved languages in
the world that had the biblical story
encoded in a “meta language” within
the language itself. The discovery
was ratified by the Witu people
themselves on Harland and Marie’s
last trip to the tribe.
The final trip to the Witu in 2001
consisted of taking a helicopter for
three days into the highlands and
visiting five remote villages from
their base at Ukurumpa. On the final
trip, Harland brought Father Henry, a
local Catholic Priest on the tour and
presented the keywords back to the
Witu people. The Witu language has
a word for God: “Akolagi” - a supreme
being – translated literally as ‘the
male being who is up higher than
all’. The Akolagi lives at the zenith,
directly above your head at all times.
The Akolagi in the Witu is a “planter”
of vegetation, which means he is the
creator and the creator of mankind’s
sustenance. The Akolagi has
conducted two “plantings” the first
planting was all creation the second
planting was a unique planting of a
single special seed to bring life (the
savior). The first planting had both
life and death in it and the second
planting was exclusively for life.
As Harland explained the sequence
of the keywords to the people in their
own language, everyone understood
by virtue of the definition of the
words. Even though none of the
audience had received a sophisticated
education, yet from child to elder
they understood instantly and no
one had to ask Harland to repeat the
meaning, this was despite hearing the
explanation for the first time. Before
Harland could give them further
keywords, they were shouting out the
next words in sequence.
After completing their work
Harland and Marie retired to
Ulladullla, NSW. They soon plan on
moving to Melbourne to be closer
to their daughter, Bronwyn and her
family. Anita now lives in Seattle
with her family.
The legacy of the Kerrs will live
forever and who knows where the
discovery of the “meta language” will
lead and what impact it will have.
Harland’s motto in life: “Man shall
not live by bread alone, but by every
word that proceeds out of the mouth
of God”.

Thank you again for all your
support during the election and
during my first few weeks in
office. It’s a huge honour to have
the opportunity to serve my local
community as your federal member
of parliament.
LOCAL SPORTING CHAMPIONS
One of my first official
responsibilities was to sit down with
local tennis legend, Kim Warwick,
to award the Local Sporting
Champions Grants for 2016-17.
Fifteen young women and men
from across the Berowra electorate,
from sports such as tennis,
baseball, swimming, gymnastics
and AFL, were recognised for
their achievements and sporting
potential.
This award gives a $500
contribution to young sportsmen
and women who are participating
in a state, national or international
sporting competition. The grant
goes towards the cost of travel,
accommodation, equipment or
uniforms.
MENTAL HEALTH IN BEROWRA
There have been many memorable
occasions over the past few weeks as
I have begun my role in Parliament
for the first time. It was a particular
highlight to give my maiden speech
in the House of Representatives on
Wednesday, 14 September, especially
as there hasn’t been a maiden speech
given by the Member for Berowra
since 1973!
In my speech, I spoke about my
father and his death by suicide 20
years ago this month. Suicide is
something that leaves a terrible scar
on everyone it touches, including
family, friends and colleagues.
More than 100 people have taken
their own lives in our local area in
the past eight years. As I said in my
speech, I am determined to do my
part to help pierce the loneliness,
the desperation and the blackness
that people who suffer depression
feel. I believe that building and
nurturing strong communities
is a critical part of this work. I
acknowledge the excellent work
that several local organisations
do in this area, including Lifeline
Harbour to Hawkesbury and the
Men’s Sheds in Dural, Kenthurst,
Wisemans Ferry and HornsbyBerowra. You can expect to hear
more from me on this as I intend
to be a strong advocate for mental
health and for speaking about
depression and suicide during my
time as Member for Berowra.
LOCAL INFRASTRUCTURE
Another issue I raised in my
maiden speech was the need across
our local area for good, strong
infrastructure. Northconnex is a vital
project for Berowra. Improving
New Line Road and working to
reduce mobile black spots across the
electorates are also priorities for me
that I will be pursuing in the federal
parliament.
HERE TO HELP
One of the most rewarding parts
of my job is to help local residents
when they have difficulties with
federal government services. While
we cannot always help directly, my
office is usually able to point you
in the right direction and help you
navigate a system that at times can
feel complex and overwhelming.
I am very pleased that, even in
our first few weeks, we have been
able to help with immigration
queries, human services matters,
communications infrastructure and
consular cases overseas, among other
issues. If there is anything that I or
my staff can help you with, please do
not hesitate to contact my office.

Bushwalking is an excellent
way to hang out with the kids
and burn energy outdoors. We’re
incredibly blessed with stunning
places to explore in Sydney - Make
a day of it by catching a ferry or
train, stopping at playgrounds or
grabbing
a hot chocolate along
the way.
Choosing a walk
Start by thinking what kind
of adventure you want to share.
Consider how you want to get
there (drive, train, bus or ferry),
will it be a want a remote walk?
Or a track with a playground or
cafe? Do you want to finish at
the zoo? Or explore historic gun
emplacements?
Adults tend to pick walks for
big views; kids tend to look for
adventure and play. Kids want
rocks to scramble over, water to
splash in or Pokemon to find.
Pre-schoolers: Choose a track
where they can walk under their
own steam. Young kids love to feel
the textures of trees and rocks;
they also love simple things like
sitting and eating a snack with
you.
Primary kids: Choose a track
where they can lead and explore.
Playgrounds add variation for
the younger ones and walking
with friends is a strong motivator
for most kids. Playing in creeks,
racing leaf boats or working out
where we are on the map can be
a lot of fun. A good rule of thumb
is to choose a walk that is half the
number of kilometers compared
to the kid’s age. For a five year-old,
start with a walk that’s less than
2.5 kilometers. You want to leave
the kids wanting more.

Governor Macquarie was very
aware of the dangers of the
Hawkesbury River floods when he
selected land for a township on the
western shore. He had lost one of
his honoured magistrates, Andrew
Thompson (see edition number 16)
of Windsor to the flood of October.
Macquarie announced to his dinner
guests on December 6, 1810 that
he would honour Mr William
Wilberforce (whom he admired for
his work in the British Parliament
to stop slavery) by naming the
settlement Wilberforce. Land
had been granted from the 1790s
throughout the district forming a
core to build a community. Thomas
and Jane [nee Topp] Rose arrived in
the colony on the Bellona in 1793 as
free settlers. Thomas was granted
120 acres at the Liberty Plains on
May 28, 1793 by Francis Grose who
was in change of the colony in
the interval between Governors
Arthur Phillip and John Hunter. A
further 70 acres was granted in 1798.
Thomas planted ten acres of wheat
but the crop did not prosper with
the soil, modern-day Lidcombe,
being low in fertility so the Rose
family purchased ‘Laurel Farm’ on
the Hawkesbury River flats from
Mr Lawrence May in 1802. Severe
flooding in 1806 and 1809 swept
away Thomas Rose’s achievements
and he decided to move to higher
ground by purchasing portion of
William McKay’s grant of 30 acres
[1797]. Rose Cottage was built in
the style of the day using ironbark
timber slabs with lathe and mud
plaster lining. Roof shingles were cut
from she-oak trees on the property
and a sandstock brick fireplace
and chimney built for the kitchen.
The family grew to five sons and
two daughters and they and their
descendents occupied the land for
the next 110 years.

Firstly, lie down on your back, raise
feet off the floor and knees bent as
shown. Hold your knees together,
hands on top of knees, straightening
arms at the elbows. On your exhale,
your out-breath, raise your head
towards your knees while drawing
your abdomen toward your spine.
Inhale and release back to the
original position, straight arms, head
resting on the floor, chin slightly
tucked down.
Repeat the sequence six times,
working slowly with the breath, then
lie flat. Focus on the movement of
your breathing, become conscious of
your natural breath, letting all worries
and fears fall away, and just breathe.

Our guest speaker this month was
perennial favourite Sonja Cameron
from the multi award winning
Cameron’s Perennial Wholesale
Nursey Arcadia. Cameron’s has
won numerous awards for their
innovative approach to water
conservation at their nursery. As
usual Sonja gave an
informative talk about
perennial plants,
their ease of care,
new colour ranges
and varieties. Sonja
generously brought
along a selection of
plants that members
eagerly snapped up for
a special club price. We
were also introduced to Cameron’s
exciting new project where plants
are available to the public by mail

Next month our guest speaker is
Paul Kirkpatrick “Le Potager - Edible
Art” This presentation discusses
the French tradition of ornamental
vegetable gardening or ‘le potager’
where vegetables, herbs, fruit and
flowers are all grown gloriously
together. We look at the history
as well as present day examples of
both romantic and formal potagers,
including the King’s vegetable
garden at Versailles and Chateau
Villandry in the Loire Valley.

Community Nursery has propagated.
These range from trees, shrubs to
groundcovers and suit a variety of
situations in the Hawkesbury.

what is available from Hawkesbury
Community Nursery, come along to a
workshop on Tuesday, 27 September

30 people who book their place.

$80M CLASSROOM BOOST FOR
WESTERN SYDNEY
About 40 new classrooms will be
built and almost 900 additional
students accommodated at schools
across Western Sydney as part of
the NSW Government’s $1 billion
boost over four years for the
construction of new classrooms and
schools infrastructure. The NSW
Government has announced the
new projects, with the capital works
to support a once-in-a-generation
demand for student places in public
schools. Communities across
Western Sydney are growing rapidly
and student enrolments continue
to rise. We are making a massive
investment in local schools to provide
the educational infrastructure to
support families living in this region.
These new school projects bring
the total announced expenditure so
far this financial year to almost $80
million for Western Sydney. Other
projects announced in the 2016-17
Budget include a new school in North
Kellyville, as well as new permanent

Riding for the Disabled (NSW)
Nepean Centre has literally been
through ‘hell and high water’
this year. Everyone involved has
been affected by the Sunday 5
June disaster, horses, riders and
volunteers alike. RDA(NSW) Nepean
Centre has always been proud of
its friendly, inclusive atmosphere
and this has proved invaluable to
the healing process. Through all the
devastation we have held on to our
vision of the RDA(NSW) Mission to
provide equine assisted activities to
people with disabilities, to develop
and enhance abilities.

$108 MILLION BUS BOOST
Additional double decker buses will
now serve some of our area’s busiest
routes, as part of a $108 million
investment in new buses from the
NSW 2016-17 Budget. The 80 seat
double deckers which carry 65 per cent
more capacity than normal size buses,
will be used on key corridors including
the busy Rouse Hill-City service (route
607X) and between Blacktown and
Macquarie Park (route 611). A new

I recently attended the 27th AGM
of the Castle Hill Branch of Red
Cross – a wonderful group of local
people who go above and beyond
the call of duty by giving support to
those most in need. On the day it was
lovely to hear from Chris Mansfield
– NSW Membership Team Leader
of Red Cross who spoke about the
enormous contributions made by
our local Castle Hill Branch. Many
people may not know that in 2015
Red Cross provided 557,108 breakfasts
to disadvantaged school kids; taught
6,000 young people first aid for
alcohol and drug related emergencies;
provided 100,000 tarpaulins and 2.8
million litres of safe drinking water
to Nepal after last year’s earthquake;
and provided support to tens of
thousands of Australians and people
in need abroad. In particular, Red
Cross has been at the forefront of
efforts to support those displaced
by the ongoing conflict in Syria.
Castle Hill Branch is one of the
hardest working branches which is
generously supported by donors in
our community. Congratulations
to President Jean Swayne and Vice
President Lorraine Williams OAM,
together with all members of the
Castle Hill Branch for their incredible
contribution.

MENTAL HEALTH MONTH
Hawkesbury City Council will
host a special ‘Green Health Zone’
for local young people in October
as part of Mental Health Month.
It will be funded by a grant from
the Way Ahead Mental Health
Association NSW to promote the
importance of early intervention
practices for positive mental health
and wellbeing.
As part of the campaign, Council
is encouraging local youth to get
involved in Mental Health Month
by coming to The Green Health
Zone at Clarendon Skate Park
on Friday, 7 October from 11am
to 3pm, to be held in conjunction
with the YMCA NSW Skate Park
League Competition and Festival
on the same day.

We continued along the 2,000 plus
kilometres of the Eyre Coastline to
Elliston. The town is named after one
of Australia’s lesser known writers
Ellis Liston.
We enjoyed our ‘creature comforts’
at the shady, grassed Elliston Caravan
Park 1km before the town, utilizing
our Seniors discount. Here too they
were recovering from flooding rains
but it was an 18 deg day, a bit cloudy
but enough sun and warmth to get
three loads of washing dry. Domestic
stuff over, we explored Elliston and
surrounds.
It is a lovely little town with vintage
type houses murals, whale tails &
dolphins made of brush and statues
facing all directions.
Don’t miss out on the cliff top
drives with a great view of the Great
Australian Bight – one via Bird Rock,
Pt Wellington and Little Bay lookout.
The harsh granite surfaces are topped
with amazing shells high up above
the crashing oceans below. What
really fascinated us was the amazing
tenacity of the birdlife and the
fantastic flora on the cliff tops. The
photos show the precarious perches
that the birds ‘enjoy’ to survive. We
watch one bird protecting its nest
from the predatory hawks. We helped
a little by trying to scare the hawk
but who knows what happened when
we left.
Cliff Top drive 2 is 12 km between
Anxious Bay and Waterloo Bay. Cape
Finniss has a classic panorama over
the Waldergrave islands, a sanctuary
for fairy penguins, seals and Cape
Barren Geese. Here is a famous
surf break called Blackfellows
Beach where in 2000 two surfers
fell victim to Great Whites within
24 hours of each other. There is a
memorial plaque to one of them on
Whales Tail

Note the poignancy in that his
potential father-in-law was surfing
with him at the time but no remains
were ever found.
Needless to say we didn’t swim here.
A main feature of the drives is the
dramatic sculptures, left over from
a symposium held in 2002. One cliff
top sculpture “Sorrow” is by Eva
Grava of the tragedy that befell the
indigenous people here in the 1840s.
It is dazzling white thermalite, only
one of the original two.
The sculptures have vastly different
subjects and use various materials,
from rusty looking bicycles and to
fish skeletons, thongs and Easter
Island type themes.
We did the inevitable jetty walk
at Waterloo Bay – called Elliston
Pier Walk – with happy little dogs
enjoying the water and again the
inevitable seagulls soaring.
In town of Elliston we had a
lovely bakery lunch and later visited
the nice little pub for dinner with
cheap seafood meals (but very small
servings).
All in all, we loved this little
unspoiled town in our Eyre
Experience, a photographers mecca!

Arcadian Quilters Inc have been asked
to donate another quilt to the “Make a
wish Foundation”. It is a lovely quilt with

145cm x 152cm and is a perfect size to be
