Spring is approaching. The weather is warming up. The nights are cold and clear,
but the days are glorious.
This issue of the Hills to Hawkesbury Living magazine is again, full of interesting
content. Every issue has multiple contributors working in the background to bring
you informative and interesting articles and pictures. We are very grateful to our
existing contributors. If you or someone you know has something that would be

always looking for new (and old) stories to include in our sections. If you have

or anything else you think might be relevant, get in touch. We’d love to hear from

We are thinking of a new little article in our gardening section called My Garden.

Since returning to Australia in 1974,
he has established a highly successful
music school, the Baulkham Hills
Studio. Here he enjoys teaching
piano, keyboard, guitar and vocals.
Charles also performs around
Sydney. His credits include
performing at the Sydney Opera
House, Sydney Conservatorium
of Music, television appearances
on Channels 7 and 2, recording,
performances on radio, and a season
on P&O lines Oriana cruise ship.
He also entertains people around
the clubs with a tribute show called
“Legends of the Past”, in which he
performs many of the songs made
famous by Billy Joel.
Charles various styles range from
Latin American to Blues, Jazz to
Classical and an infinite variety of
rock.
Charles also enjoys presenting
his program on Alive 90.5 where he
plays a variety of music. During this
program he has a dance segment
where he encourages listners to
dance to get fit.
Charles always ends his program by
saying “Be kind to each other but most
of all be kind to your animals because
they can’t speak for themselves.”

join the fun.
IT WAS A CRACKER OF A NIGHT WHEN WE HAD
FIREWORKS
But as I recall as a child I thought
“Cracker Night” was a real blast of
fun and enjoyment, but as is often
the case, the antics of the few have
spoiled it for the many.

the Bolona men’s hamlet stood inside
its double fenced enclosure less than
20 yards from the area where Harland
hoped to be permitted to build a
house for his family. This cycle of
activities carried over many months
and was critical for the well-being
of the entire district. It reached its
peak in the final four months of sing
sings and feasts at the men’s hamlet
selected for the building of the
ceremonial long house. It was about

Yapera was the undisputed chief
of the Poloko District. The previous
senior chief, Epei, had been killed
in inter clan warfare. Yapera had
assumed the leadership after his
death, and acquired up to seven

courageous leader of his people, able
to beat back the major Wiru districts.
The rest of the senior Wiru men
who stood with Yapera around
Harland Kerr and the patrol officers
as they parleyed about the potential
house site were very skeptical. They
were afraid that this stranger would
undermine the effectiveness of this
cycle of activities essential for their
long-term health and the viability
of their animals and crops. They
did not want the stranger to settle
among them, let alone have his
house built so close to the tall round
spirit house. But Yapera’s decision
to give permission overruled their
objections. The deal was sealed with
the gift to the Chief of a special
pearl shell. The shell was given the
name Aiyura, the naming of the
pearl shell gave it a special status.
Only the most valuable of such shells
had a name and acquired a history
as they moved from one owning
group to another over time. Yapera
in accepting this pearl shell for his
district and determining its name was
putting his reputation in jeopardy.
If anything were to go wrong with
the impending activation of the final
four critical months of this Fertility
Cycle, he would be held responsible.
His acceptance and naming of the
shell was a measure of his authority
and his capacity to lead. Many years
later he told Marie quietly that he
had had a dream of such a person
as Harland Kerr coming into his
district, and he was prepared. Dreams
foretelling the future had been very
important for men. They went alone
into the forest to build a small open
sided dream house in which to sleep
and receive a dream from the pair
of dream givers Yali and Pulu. Their
names would figure prominently in
the metalanguage that Harland Kerr
would discover many long years later
encoded in their regular language and
culture in general.
Harland Kerr returned to Bolona a
month later with a friend and erected
the new house for his young family.

Ascent: 240m
The Colo River starts at the junction of the Wolgan
and the Capertee Rivers, halfway from east to west across Wollemi
National Park. It swings south when it joins Wollemi Creek, the longest
waterway in the park. Crawfords Lookout is a spectacular outlook over
the junction of these two rivers, and it is not a hard walk to gain these
views.

is on the south east
side of the ridge, on
the cliff edge, and has
excellent views over
Wollemi Creek. Looking
downstream, you can
see the junction of
Wollemi Creek with the
Colo River, at a large
sandbank. The cliffs on
both sides of the river
are imposing, and routes
look quite unlikely.
There are in fact
numerous rocky
outcrops along the cliff
edge, all of which afford
superb views.

SAVAGE BY NAME, GENTLE BY NATURE
Doctor John Savage came to the
colony in New South Wales in 1803 to
immunise children against smallpox
infection. In January 1804 he was
working as a surgeon in Parramatta
along with John Harris, James Mileham
and Thomas Jamieson. In May he
received notification to make ready
to go to Port Dalrymple. However he
considered that inoculation against
smallpox was most important to the
children of Sydney and Parramatta
and so he decided to stay in the colony
rather than sail to Van Diemen’s Land.
Savage was a member of the Royal
Jennerian Society, which in 1803
had established an effective method
to protect the population from the
scourge of smallpox. During his
term in the colony, Savage recorded
the inoculation of over a thousand
children.
Savage’s inoculation programme
was a great success and Governor
King set aside a large parcel of land
as a reward for his work. The grant
of 290 acres (117 hectares) issued
in 1804 was bounded by presentday Hull Road and Copeland Road,
Beecroft, and had as its western
boundary Samuel Marsden’s Mount
Wilberforce estate. It also abutted
the Missionary Grants of Cover and
Mileham.
The lead-up to the granting of
this parcel of land can be traced
through the official publications of
the Sydney Gazette. The colonists
needed to be persuaded to undertake
the vaccination, which was a new
form of medical treatment, and
the official newspaper headed
the campaign. This programme
continued until the World Health
Organisation was able to report in
the 1980s that smallpox had been
completely eliminated from the
human population.

Trebor Road Pennant Hills intrigues
everyone who travels along Pennant
Hills Road. Drivers waiting for traffic
lights to change at the intersection of
City View and Trebor Roads have been
wondering for years, why Trebor?
In 1813, William Charles Wentworth
[1793-1872] along with Gregory
Blaxland and William Lawson
made the first crossing of the Blue
Mountains using the ridges rather
than following the streams that
flowed out of the valleys. Wentworth
sailed to England in 1816 and studied
law for the next four years. He wrote
the first book to be published by a
native Australian giving a historical
and political description of the colony
which aroused high interest and sold
well. He became a prominent NSW
politician.

Thomasine (Timmie)
[1825-1913] married
in 1844 Thomas John
Fisher [1813-1875], a
prominent solicitor of
the 19th century. They
owned many acres
of the original John
Thorn land grant which
encompassed much of
the modern-day suburb
of Pennant Hills. Fisher
and his wife named their
property Hillcrest. In
due course their son Robert [b:1848]
inherited the property and when
he passed away in 1919 the land was
subdivided. Streets in the subdivision
were to be named Fisher, Robert, and
Hillcrest.
MIDDLE DURAL PUBLIC SCHOOL
IS CELEBRATING 125 YEARS SINCE
IT OPENED IN 1981
The school held a Colonial Day
during March when we invited
Hillside PS to visit and children
from both schools dressed in period
costume.
A reunion will be held at the
school on Sunday September 11
from 10 am till 3 pm.
The schoolrooms will be opened
for visitors to wander through
and watch a slide show covering
the school’s history, mainly
concentrating on the 25 years since
our 100 year celebrations, but also
covering some photographs from
earlier times. A special room will be
set up as a history room.
The formal part of the day will
start at 12.30 with speeches followed
by a birthday cake cutting.
Food will be available throughout
the day with a sausage sizzle, a
coffee van and special cupcakes
as well as the canteen operating
with nostalgic fare including the
favourite corn and chicken rolls and
boiled lollies. We expect that other
food stalls will take part.
Throughout the day there will
be children’s attractions operating
including a jumping castle, a petting

it possible you may be sleep deprived?
Sleep is so important to health and
wellbeing, and when you’re not
getting enough, your emotions and
mood can be affected negatively,
your ability to handle stress, to
think clearly, and even feel greater
happiness in life are all compromised.
Physiologically, sleep deprivation
can weaken your immune system,
contribute to weight gain, affect
your heart health, can increase blood
pressure, negatively affect your brain
activity, and can put you at risk of
type two diabetes.
Step back in time to before the
days of electricity, and in general,
people were going to sleep earlier. As
a result, people were more in tune
with nature’s rhythms. Fast forward
to now, with all the distractions like
devices, TV and media vying for
your attention, most of us need to
make a conscious effort to get some
serious shut-eye, and give our body’s

your entry form for the 2016 Hawkesbury Garden
Competition, which can be easily entered online
or using the entry forms from Council. Entries
close on Friday, 26 August 2016.
The annual Garden Competition is well known
and Council encourages all the keen gardeners in
the Hawkesbury to enter. Big or small, there is a
category to suit everyone.
Entrants can select ONE of the seven categories
to enter in this year’s competition, with all
entrants going in the running for Best Regional
Garden and Grand Champion Garden.
Entry forms, including full conditions of entry
can be found at www.hawkesbury.nsw.gov.au or
at Council’s Administration Building, 366 George
Street, Windsor.
Judging will take place on Friday, 16 September,
Saturday, 17 September and Sunday, 18 September
2016. Entrants will be notified of the schedule of
judging closer to the date.
Winners will be announced at a special
ceremony to be held this year on Wednesday, 19
October 2016, 7pm at Windsor RSL, 36 Argyle
Street, Windsor.

The Bromeliad Society of Australia INC will hold
their next meeting at Federation Pavilion, Castle Hill
Showground on Saturday, 3 September with plant
sales commencing at 12noon. Access is via the new
Showground entrance off Showground Road into
Doran Drive, Castle Hill.
Guest speaker will be Terry Davis a Tillandsia (air
plant) enthusiast who was looking for a hobby in 2006
while planning for his retirement. This hobby has now

FARMING FUTURE OF THE LIVERPOOL
PLAINS SECURED
Coal mining will not occur under
the famous black soils of Liverpool
Plains after the NSW Government
secured a buy-back of the Caroona
mining exploration licence issued
by the former Labor Government on
some of Australia’s most productive
farming land. The NSW Government
has reached a commercial agreement
with BHP Billiton to buy back the
Caroona exploration licence – issued
in 2006 for underground coal
mining covering approximately 344
square kilometres in the Liverpool
Plains. The Liverpool Plains provide
some of the most productive and
valuable farming land in Australia,
home to the iconic black soils and
generations of successful food and
fibre producers.
After careful consideration, the
NSW Government has determined
that coal mining under these highly
fertile black soil plains, as proposed
by Labor, poses too great a risk for
the future of this food-bowl and

Emergency Services
Community Award
ceremony at
Darling Harbour
on Saturday 23 July. These awards
are open to all NSW based personnel
both paid and volunteer from six
the underground water sources
that support it. This decision
guarantees the future of the State’s
most productive and fertile farming
land, providing confidence for local
farmers to invest in an industry that
has the potential to be one of the
food bowls of the world.
The decision to buy back the
Caroona licence was in line with
advice from the NSW Planning
Assessment Commission, which
recommended the Government
prohibit mining on the black soil
plains. Coal mining in NSW has a
long and promising future, but the
NSW Government would increase its
efforts to remove all coal exploration
licences from the strategic
agricultural land of the Liverpool
Plains.
INCREASING ACCESS TO
CANNABIS-BASED MEDICINE
Doctors in NSW will now be able
to apply to prescribe a broader
NSW ES organisations: Fire & Rescue,
Marine Rescue, Ambulance, Rural
Fire Service (RFS), State Emergency
Services (SES) and Volunteer Rescue.
MC Superintendent Ian Krimmer
F&RNSW served up a fabulous array
of outstanding finalists from each
organisation along with the fabulous
meal served up by Rotary NSW. Sue
Devenyns was one of four finalists
from RFS and her amazing record
of volunteering in her role as Senior
Deputy Captain of The Communications
brigade plus her work in innumerable
areas in The Hills and beyond, is difficult
to put down on paper.
The devastating December 2002
range of cannabis-based medicines
as a result of NSW Government
regulatory changes.
The move means cannabis-based
medicines that were previously
only able to be used in clinical trials
in NSW can now be considered
by doctors for patients who have
exhausted standard treatment
options. People who are seriously
ill should be able to access these
medicines if they are the most
appropriate next step in their
treatment.
This change increases the options
available for doctors as it means a
broader range of cannabis-based
medicines can be prescribed - while
we continue our evidence-based
research looking further into the
role medicinal cannabis can play.
NSW was regulating cannabis-based
medicines in the same way as any
other emerging medicine. Patients
wishing to investigate the use of
cannabis-based medicines will need
to talk with their doctor about
suitability.
There is still a lot to learn about
safety and efficacy for different
patient conditions and groups
which is why we are investing
$21 million to further world
leading evidence-based research
into the safe and effective use of
cannabis-based medicines. The
regulatory changes will take effect
immediately.
Applications from prescribing
doctors will be assessed by the
Commonwealth Therapeutic
Goods Administration, and by
a committee of medical experts
on behalf of NSW Health. For

catalyst for Sue to join the RFS. Since
2008 Sue has been SDC of over 55
members of the Comms brigade. Sue
is instrumental in the rostering of
Comms members, mentors most of the
new trainees, and assists with planning
of major regional and Communications
exercises. Sue has been deployed ‘out
of area’ on numerous occasions to
assist Fire Control staff, aviation teams,
strike teams and divisional command
teams. Sue is a major contributor to the
District’s Firewise For Kids programme
and many local schoolkids including
Glenorie and Hillside Primary Schools

the Fellowship of First Fleeters meet
