Credit Union News Summer 2014 Your Community Federal Credit Union Established in 1977 New Help to Choose the Safest Car Deaths from traffic accidents have dropped sharply as safety features like air bags improved the likelihood of car occupants surviving a crash. But new safety technology can prevent some accidents from occurring in the first place. First luxury cars and now midpriced vehicles have added systems that warn a driver when a front-end crash is imminent and, in some cases, apply the brakes automatically. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety rated vehicles in three categories—superior, advanced, and basic. Each rating depends on the equipment offered and its performance in braking tests at 12 miles per hour (mph) and 25 mph to simulate city driving. Here’s a closer look at what each rating means and which cars fell into that category: * Superior: To get this highest rating, a vehicle needed to offer autobraking and perform well in the testing. Subaru’s Legacy sedan and Outback wagon with their so-called Eyesight system got the highest rating because they were the only vehicles to avoid crashes entirely in both the 12 mph and 25 mph tests. Cadillac’s Automatic Collision Preparation System was next best. The Cadillac ATS sedan and SRX SUV both avoided a crash at 12 mph and reduced the speed by more than 15 mph before crashing in the 25 mph test. The three other vehicles that achieved a superior rating are the Mercedes-Benz C-Class sedan and the Volvo S60 sedan and XC60 SUV. * Advanced: Models with this rating offer forward collision warning combined with autobraking that performed less well in the tests. Some of these systems, including Acura’s Collision Mitigation Brake System, are designed to slow the car down before a crash but not avoid it entirely, according to the IIHS. Vehicles with advanced ratings include the 2014 Acura MDX SUV, the Audi A4 sedan and Q5 SUV, the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV, the Lexus ES sedan, and the 2014 Mazda 6 sedan. * Basic: In this rating, a vehicle has a forward collision warning but no autobraking. Each system also must meet NHTSA criteria of sounding a warning within a certain time before a crash. Some vehicles advertised with autobraking— such as the BMW 3 series and the Infiniti JX SUV—got a basic rating because they did not perform well enough in the testing. Consumers who want crash prevention technology have a fair number of vehicles to choose from. And INDIANA LAKES FCU members have access to the best loan rates and terms. How To Tell If Your ID Has Been Hacked The 2013 Identity Fraud Report from Javelin Strategy & Research, Pleasanton, Calif., revealed that almost one of four consumers who received a data breach letter became a victim of identity theft. The same study revealed that consumers who had their Social Security number compromised in a data breach were five times more likely to be a fraud victim than the average consumer. How can you tell if your identity has been compromised? * Surprise! You’re denied. If your credit card is denied, find out why—especially if you always pay on time and haven’t reached your spending limit. Don’t shrug it off and assume your card will work the next time; investigate immediately. * Unexpected increase in an account balance. This could be a sign that someone made changes in your name and went shopping, hoping to leave you with the bill. * Unauthorized inquiries. If you see inquiries on your credit reports that you didn’t initiate, that’s a sign someone might be trying to open credit in your name. * Sudden drop in credit score. An unexplained drop in your credit score is a sign someone is using—and trashing— your credit. * Mysterious new account. The sooner you notice unauthorized accounts opened in your name, the faster you can shut them down. Bottom line: Review your credit reports regularly. You can order one free credit report a year from each of the “big three” credit reporting agencies—Equifax, TransUnion, and Experian—at AnnualCreditReport.com. And keep an eye on your credit score.
