THE KAMLOOPS SELF-ADVOCATE:A NEWSLETTER FOR PEOPLE WITH DIVERSE ABILITIES Issue # The Kamloops SelfAdvocate: A Newsletter for People with Diverse Abilities November 2014 Issue #14 REMEMBRANCE DAY This month, the theme of the newsletter is friendship and connection. However, with current events, it seems important to take a few minutes to remember, “lest we forget”. For some who don’t know, Canada lost a solder to gunfire at the National War Memorial in Ottawa. At this time of year, we take time to remember those who have served in the past and those who continue to serve. It is a reminder that soldiers play important roles in our society. There are different careers in the military like medical officers, military police officers, cooks and so much more in the national defense. IN THIS ISSUE And, some soldiers, like Cpl Nathan Cirillo, stand guard at the National War Memorial. Our thoughts and prayers are with this soldier’s family. We wish you well while you heal from this loss. Remember you are in our thoughts during this challenging time. On behalf of the Kamloops Self-Advocate newsletter team, I would like to wish you well. ~ Krystian Issue# Feature Articles Recipe Blazer Report Quotes Upcoming Events Contact us at: thekamloopsselfadvocate@yahoo.com 743 Nicola St., Rear., Kamloops, BC, V2C 6G4 THE KAMLOOPS SELF-ADVOCATE:A NEWSLETTER FOR PEOPLE WITH DIVERSE ABILITIES | Issue# Friendship By Lisa Coriale Friendship is important for everyone. This is no exception for people with different abilities. I believe that true friendship is a strong bond between two people. A friend supports you in whatever you do. What does friendship mean to you? It is great to have people around you to encourage and strengthen you. A real friend is someone who accepts a person for who they are on the inside rather than focusing on the outside. Everyone has gifts to offer and we just have to take the time to discover them. Friendship is a special connection and should not be taken for granted. There are many layers to friendship; some are wonderful and some are difficult. Working through them together is key. Having someone there you can confide in who will help you through the hardest times of your life is vital. Having that strong connection can be challenging at times, but not impossible. People can have many friends but there are only a few who will become best friends. Finding close friends can be difficult for anyone, but is especially difficult for people with different abilities. There are barriers that must be overcome by both sides. Some of these barriers may be fears that people have or communication factors. Now is the time to place our differences and feelings aside. Everyone deserves real friendship. “Walking with a friend in the dark is better than walking alone in the light.” -Helen Keller NO IMITATION Somedays I am Vibrant hot pink and fiery orangeJubilant, optimistic, outgoing and high spirited, laughing with friends and feeling Alive. Other days I am inky black and mossy greenFrustrated by my own limitations confused and bewildered by the world around. This is me and no imitationBy: Jadea the Dark Angel . 2 Meet Marco, A Presenter Who Loves to Inspire Others (Part 2 of 2) This month, we hear the rest of Krystian’s interview with Marco, about his connections with others and his many interests. What are your other abilities? I love playing poker, and as a result, I've learned how to read people and their body language. This is a huge asset when in meetings, interviews or social interactions; there isn't a time that it doesn't prove to be useful. What did you like about Camp Squamish? Camp Squamish is a very special place. I like how I always felt “home” when I was there and I never knew what adventures were in store for me each day. Rock climbing, kayaking, singing, arts and crafts, even detective work are among some of the things I got to experience, and that was only the beginning. Some people I met there are still my friends to this day. What are your favorite things about camp and BC Lions Society/BC Easter Seals? My favorite thing about Camp and BC Lions Society/BC Easter Seals is the people behind it. Not only do they all have hearts of gold, but they approach everything as abilities first. No matter what I wanted to try while at camp, the councilors would do THE KAMLOOPS SELF-ADVOCATE:A NEWSLETTER FOR PEOPLE WITH DIVERSE ABILITIES | Issue# everything in their power to make it possible. Can you tell me a short story about your experiences at camp, like what kind of pranks you did on the camp counselors? When I first went to camp, there was a Camp Director named Ross who always made me feel important. So important in fact that he made me honorary “Camp Detective.” He would set up clues around the camp for me to solve that often had riddles that would lead me to the next clue and the next until finally I solved “the crime.” I know now the amount of effort that must have taken and it means so much to me that he did this. As far as pranks are concerned, I LOVED “Kangaroo Court” and one of the grossest punishments I remember is when I had to put my hands in slimy oatmeal that was cold and wet...haha but it was all in good fun. Christmas at the Courthouse - November 29 & 30 THE KAMLOOPS SELF-ADVOCATE:A NEWSLETTER FOR PEOPLE WITH DIVERSE ABILITIES | Issue# For people who enjoy being scared, there was also a haunted house. They had an ancient Egyptian maze and at the end of the maze someone comes out and scares you for fun. This was my favourite part of Boo at the Zoo. The train was running and decorated with lights. In the amphitheatre, there was a laser light show. There is much more to see and do. It’s so much fun you should check it out next year! Boo at the Zoo Krystian had the opportunity to join in the Halloween fun at the BC Wildlife Park. According to David Edwards, Manager of Education, and Special Events at the BC Wildlife Park, “This is the fifth year for "Boo at the Zoo". We run it for six nights before and during Halloween each year. This year, Boo runs from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm on Oct. 24, 25, 26, 30, 31 and Nov. 1st. This is a great event for Families.” Meanwhile, Krystian was able to check out the fun. Here’s what he had to say: There were Halloween light displays and you could visit with Jelly Bean the Dragon, who is wandering around and visiting with park guests. He doesn’t talk, but he seems like a fun dragon. Uncle Chris the Clown was definitely talking, though. He was at a display and was entertaining the kids. Friendship and Dating Thoughts from Krystian People need connections whether they have disabilities or not. People need care, compassion and love. But, it’s even harder for people with disabilities to be friends or a partner to others with or without disabilities. We all have a choice in who we want to be friends with and be a partner to. People need friends and romantic relationships. People need to start out as friends first and date slowly for it to not be bumpy. People need safety when they first start to date. People with disabilities may need to use even more caution when being friends and dating at first. People need to be careful to not jump into a relationship too soon. It’s ok to test the waters 4 but not to be in a relationship just yet. People need to be aware to start slow when they want to date until you get to know the other person. This is especially true with on-line relationships as you don't know who the other person is behind the computer screen and you don't know if he or she is who they claim to be. Dating online can be dangerous. Dating in person is much safer. Remember when dating, have fun, stay safe and be a friend first. We want to make friends in a safe place and be in a controlled environment. We all want to feel love and care and compassion. What do you think? How have you made friends and close connections? What has worked well for you to make friends? It's perfectly OK to take time to warm up to new people and situations. But shyness blocks some people from being as comfortable or sociable as they'd like to be. Some people want to feel less shy so they can have more fun socializing and being themselves around others. Here are some tips for overcoming shy feelings: Start small with people you know. Practice social behaviors like eye contact, confident body language, introductions, small talk, asking questions, and invitations with the people you feel most comfortable around. Smile. Build your confidence this way. Then branch out to do this with new friends, too. Think of some conversation starters. Often, the hardest part of talking to someone new is getting started. Think of conversation openers, like introducing yourself ("Hi, I'm Chris, we're in the same English class"), giving a compliment ("That jacket looks great on you"), or asking a question ("Do you know when our report is due?"). Being ready with a conversation starter (or a few) makes it easier to approach someone. Rehearse what to say. When you're ready to try something you've been avoiding because of shyness — like a phone call or a conversation — write down what you want to say beforehand. Rehearse it out loud, maybe even in front of the mirror. Then just do it. Don't worry if it's not exactly like you practiced or if it's not perfect. Few of the things more confident-seeming people do are perfect either. Be proud that you gave it a go. Next time, it'll be even better because it will be easier. Give yourself a chance. Find group activities where you can be with people who share your interests. Give yourself a chance to practice socializing with these new people, and get to know them slowly. People who are shy often worry about failing or how others will judge them. Worries and feelings like these can keep you from trying. If self-criticism plays a role for you, ask yourself whether you'd be this critical of your best friend. Chances are you'd be much more accepting. So treat yourself like your own best friend. Encourage yourself instead of expecting to fail. Develop your assertiveness. Because shy people can be overly concerned with other peoples' reactions, they don't want to rock the boat. That doesn't mean they're wimpy or cowardly. But it can mean they are less likely to be assertive. Being assertive means speaking up for yourself when you should, asking for what you want or need, or telling other people when they're stepping on your toes. 5 Most of all, be yourself. It's OK to try out different conversational approaches you see others using. But say and do what fits your style. Being the real you — and daring to let yourself be noticed — is what attracts friends. http://teenshealth.org/teen/your_mind/probl ems/shy_tips.html Reviewed by: D'Arcy Lyness, PhD Defying the Experts As a child, Jessica Stepic was diagnosed with autism. The dates they died below the names tell of wars now passed and gone Passchendaele, the Somme, and Mons of battles fought, and lost or won. History remembers, as it should these men who fought and died Whilst for their families left behind a dull sorrow tinged with pride. The faces of boys held now in Sepia who died in days long gone yet living on in memories and hearts, still holding on. Yet despite the hurt and grief here what with horror makes me fill Is that when I look behind me there are more new crosses growing still. ~Bill Mitton TCS strives to enrich the of life for each Telephone: 250-828-1508 Website: (Paid ad, TCS) Upcoming Events Let us know if there are community events that people might want to hear about!
