balls.
That’s how much
equipment Kamloops’
Special Olympics softball
team brought to a tournament in Port Coquitlam
three weeks ago after
thieves pillaged their
gear from a locker on
McArthur Island.
Fast-forward to last
weekend.
The same team drove
to the B.C. Special
Olympics in Abbotsford
with 50 bats, 50 gloves,
150 balls, five equipment
bags, two sets of bases,
10 helmets, a few new
sets of cleats and $2,000
worth of donations.
And they won gold.
The Kamloops community responded to a
KTW article that chronicled the theft by showering the squad with all the
leather, rubber, aluminum
and cold, hard cash it
could handle.
“It’s a dark day made
into a golden day,” head
coach Mike Ward said.
“The day I went and
found all that stuff gone,
we had nothing.”
Assistant coach
Laurel Scott said the
response was overwhelming.
“People were sending
e-mails to everyone they
knew. We’re neighbours,
and we’re all part of the
same community. It’s
great.
“People I didn’t even
know would just drop a
bag of bats over the fence
or give us gloves during

After going undefeated in its 12-team division
at the provincials, the
Kamloops squad, which
merged with Grand Forks
due to a lack of players,
beat Langley in the goldmedal game.

“No one knew each
other to start, but all the
guys were crying at the
end because they bonded
so much,” Ward said.
“You just can’t buy that.”
As for what the team
would like to say to the
community, shortstop
James Love may have
said it best:
“I want to say, ‘Thank
you. It made a difference.’”
