President’s Report
Create a Fund
The Kamloops Foundation, now in its 28th year, has had an exciting and fruitful year.
One of our goals was to become better known in the community. We have made an
effort to have more people become aware of the Kamloops Foundation. To this end,
with ongoing support from the Stollery Foundation, we were able to create the new
position of Foundation Development Officer (is this the correct title?). The mandate of
the Foundation Development Officer take an active role in building relationships with
community members.
As part of our effort to raise our profile, the Kamloops Foundation hosted its 1st Annual
Dinner fundraising event at the Colombo Lodge in March. It was a tremendous success.
In order to continue to make grants to the communities we serve, we must build our
community grant funds. This task will be spearheaded by our Foundation Development
Officer. We anticipate increased donations to existing and new funds as a result of this
effort. During my 3 years as President, more than $500,000 in grants? has been provided
to the community. Some of the projects funded include, Kamloops Food Bank, People in
Motion, Health Arts Society, New Life Mission, Kamloops Family Resources Society, Project X Theatre, various school playgrounds, Interior Community Services and the Centre
for Seniors Information (is this the correct name?).
I do look forward to my upcoming term as Past President. Our board consists of 15 volunteers who give of their time on various committees. They all are involved in “making a
difference” in the Thompson Nicola region.
I thank you all for the opportunity of leading the group and I will continue to do whatever I can to further the success of the Kamloops Foundation.

2011 Highlights
Charles Harvey’s parents taught him about the importance of giving back
and, in 1991, Charles continued that tradition. He established the Charles
F. J. Harvey Family Fund at his local community foundation.
His initial gift was $15,000. But over the years Chas’ fund grew, through
new contributions and prudent stewardship of the capital, to $278,000.
Every year his fund provides $14,000 in grants to youth-at-risk, or
isolated seniors
or programs that allow the physically challenged to work, live and play to
their full potential. Today, Charles’ initial gift has been given away more
than 18 times already.
His gift of $15,000 could have been
spent in 1991, with a single impact in
the community. But compare that to
the benefit the community continues to
realize through the endowment of his
gift. In another 15 or 30 or 45 years this
story will still be relevant – it is not just
a moment in history for Charles Harvey
and his community... it is a growing
legacy.

Our Funds
The Stollery Charitable Foundation was founded by Robert and
Shirley Stollery in 1994. They believed it was important to give
back to the community that had helped them achieve success.
Their vision included the creation of the Stollery Children’s Hospital and the Stollery Charitable Foundation.
The Stollery Charitable Foundation is a private family foundation
that provides funds to local registered charities helping people in
Edmonton and Kamloops, where members of the Stollery family
reside.
The mandate of the Foundation is to improve the health and vitality of the local communities it serves while building the capacity
of charitable agencies.
The Stollery Charitable Foundation has partnered with the Kamloops Foundation through the small grants program. The funds
they have provided for this program have enabled the Kamloops
Foundation to provide support to many of the charitable agencies
within our community.
The Stollery Charitable Foundation has also given funding to the
Kamloops Foundation to help them build capacity and to become
a stronger leader within the community.

Kamloops Youth Advisory Council
Youth and Philanthropy – The “We Remember Project”
In existence since 1997 the Kamloops Youth Advisory Council is a
youth component of the Kamloops Foundation.
KYAC is the longest operating Youth in Philanthropy group in B.C.,
the second oldest in Canada and the first to establish its own endowment fund. KYAC’s motto is “Youth Helping Youth”. This dedicated group, aged 14 to 18 make grants for programs and projects
by youth, for youth in Kamloops and Area. They do this by building their Legacy Fund and allocating the earned annual income
for grants and awards.
The KYAC’s latest project, the “We Remember Project” will focus
on building a Legacy Fund called the “We Remember Fund”. This
fund will make awards in the memory of those on the Kamloops
Cenotaph that gave their lives for our Country. As part of this project, Yac’ers are challenged to:

New Life Mission
Eureka! Science Program
Junior Achievement BC
Safe Suite Program
The New Life Mission has been working to serve, strengthen, and
uplift the people in our community since 1980.
EUReKA! is a non-profit, student-run organization based out of
Thompson Rivers University that strives to increase elementary
student’s interest in and excitement towards science and engineering and to help teachers bring science into the regular
classroom. To fulfill our objectives, EUReKA! offers in-classroom
workshops, summer camps, and community events that emphasize fun, challenging, hands-on, problem solving activities. We
are actively involved in our community and also believe in providing outreach opportunities to surrounding areas of Kamloops
through our travel camps.
Part of the grant we received from the Kamloops Foundation will
go directly to program support . This support helps subsidize our
camp registration fee, making it affordable for all participants.
More specifically it helps to offset the cost of program development, delivery in addition to program materials and supplies.
Junior Achievement believes in the boundless potential of young
people and delivers programs that will help them succeed in life.
Relevant, hands-on learning exposes students to “real world” lessons in financial literacy and the importance of finishing school
while modeling entrepreneurial thinking.
Seniors Outreach Society (SOS) has been offering free services to
assist seniors with independent living for over two decades. We
lobby for solutions to assist low income seniors with ageing in
place in safe, appropriate housing and are dedicated to supporting seniors with issues such as abuse, health and finances.
SOS works closely with seniors within our community offering a
wide range of services to assist older adults to live independently
and with dignity. These include: outreach, service coordination,
information and referrals, completion of required documentation, grocery shopping, housing information and advocacy, daily
check-ins, safe suite for seniors in crisis and friendly visits. This organization saw a need within the community and as a result created the Safe Suite program.
The Safe Suite program provides seniors in crisis with free, fully furnished housing and food for up to 60 days. A Support Worker finds
out what supports a tenant is getting and links them to services as
needed – legal, financial, housing and health.
The grant from the Kamloops Foundation helped to furnish the
suite creating a comfortable and safe temporary home for seniors.
The New Life Mission and the House of Ruth Long Term Residential Recovery
Programs are committed to providing safe, clean, and sober environments for men and
women working to overcome gambling, drug and/or alcohol dependencies. The programs offer the opportunity for the men and
women to explore career possibilities and reconnect with their
families. Clients can stay in the program and reside with us for up
to two years.
The New Life Mission Outreach Centre also offers many other programs for both men
and women in the community including healthy hot lunches,
emergency food, emergency clothing and furniture, chapel services, funeral services, addictions counseling, crisis counseling,
employment counseling, assessment and referral services, probono law clinic, hairdressing salon, foot clinic, prison and hospital
ministry, volunteer program, plus a Dental & Health Clinic.
The grant received from the Kamloops Foundation will provide
food for people in need in our city through our hot lunch program.
The other part of the grant will be used in
our bursary program. At EUReKA! we believe everybody should be able to attend
science camp regardless of their financial
situation. With the help of our sponsors last
year, EUReKA! was able to help 61 campers
come to camp with full or partial bursaries.
Our programs are unique in that they are taught by trained volunteers from BC’s business community who share first-hand experience and stories that cannot be learned from a text book.
With the help of our business community partners we are reaching over 30,000 students in BC each year and are constantly striving to expand our reach while improving program content and
delivery.
During the 2011/12 school year, 67 programs will be delivered
in the Kamloops Region. Junior Achievement programs are delivered free to students and schools thanks to the support of
our generous donors and volunteers. Together with the funds
received from the Kamloops Foundation, we have been able to
reach our goal of reaching 2000 students in Kamloops.

Family Resources Society
Family Tree is a peer driven, grassroots agency that has been
working with families in Kamloops, for the past 6 years. Much
of the population we work with are mothers in recovery from
drug and alcohol abuse, low income families and families dealing with violence.
Our mission is to empower families to overcome obstacles.
We do this by providing a safe, non-judgemental environment
where participants will be connected with professionals and
peers to address issues they are dealing with.
This year we were grateful to receive $3,000.00 from the Kamloops Foundation / Stollery Small Grants Fund to be used for
materials for our 3 major programs, The Family Tree Drop In,
Mothers for Recovery Mentorship Program and the Mothers for
Recovery Support Group. Receipt of these funds has made it
possible to increase the Family Tree Drop in Program from 2 days
per week to 3, and to help us provide a healthy lunch to our
participants 5 days per week, which is sometimes the healthiest
meal our participants and their children will have in a day.

training. Medical school in itself is quite expensive and living on
my own for the first time has been an exciting new experience.
The Dr John Willoughby Scholarship has made it possible for me
to avoid taking out a loan from the bank, for which I am very grateful. I would also like to acknowledge that receiving the scholarship
tells me that there are people behind me hoping that I succeed,
