Skaters - Presentation Academy
Now Accepting Skaters, HIPSTERS, divas PREPS, Jocks, nerds, And Any Other YOU CAN SMASH... THANKS TO You. From the President Dear Alumnae, Families, and Friends, One thing we all know––and love––about Pres is how inclusive and openhearted she is as an institution. The excellence of a Pres education is matched only by the distinctly accepting culture that defines every aspect of our school. It is one of our greatest strengths, blessing us with so many unique voices that come together to form a magnificent chorus. To be accepting is to celebrate originality and individuality, while fostering a deep and abiding sense of wholeness and belonging. Exceptional in so many different ways, the girls who choose to attend Pres are accepted for who they are and who they seek to become. A Pres Girl feels she fits in, yet is given the close attention, encouragement and support she needs to stand out. To reflect this spirit of acceptance and belonging, we created this year's campaign theme: Now Accepting As you'll see, we're doing some exciting––and original––things to help build and showcase the Pres brand and to communicate the virtues of our historic school. Academic excellence. Inclusiveness and diversity. Compassion and character. At the same time, I encourage us all to appreciate what lies beyond our brand, what exists deep within us. How do you brand what's inside each Pres Girl––that spirit, that fire? Pres Girls transcend brand. We defy categorization. There's just so much more to us, so much inside. "Be a Pres Girl" means being accepted for your originality and belonging to an amazing community, but it also means something different and wonderful for every girl who takes it to heart. As proud as I am of the Pres brand––inclusiveness, diversity, originality, character––I'm even more proud of the Pres spirit. It isn't easy to sum up in words or capture in a slogan. It's something we feel more than we're able to express––which is to say, it is extraordinary. Pres-fully yours, Sister Christine Beckett, SCN President Now Accepting Architects, DIRECTORS, CHEMISTS, ENTREPRENEURS, Engineers, Surgeons, SENATORS, ZOOKEEPERS, CURATORS, CEOs,CPAs,PhDs, Paleontologists, JOURNALISTS, VETERINARIANS, NOVELISTS, ASTRONOMERS... Academics That Challenge and Inspire Acing The Test Presentation's average ACT score for 2015 was 23, above state and national averages. The top 10% of the class averaged a remarkable 30, with the top quartile averaging an equally impressive 28.5. All of our 2015 graduates are pursuing post-secondary education. The College Experience ACT SCORES Since our founding in 1831, Presentation Academy has upheld the highest standards for academic excellence. Today, that legacy continues by providing challenging academic programs and a dynamic cultural environment, allowing every student the opportunity to broaden her potential and achieve great things. 32 31 30 29 28 27 26 25 24 23 22 21 20 19 18 17 16 TOP 10% OF CLASS - AVERAGE ACT OF 30-32 TOP 25% OF CLASS - AVERAGE ACT OF 28-29 AVERAGE PRES ACT SCORE: 23-24 NATIONAL AVERAGE: 21 JEFFERSON CO. AVERAGE: 19, STATE AVERAGE: 19 Presentation utilizes a special partnership with our next-door neighbor, Spalding University. By taking courses at Spalding for credit and having access to the university's resources, Pres Girls get a true collegiate experience before entering college. Tech-forward Don’t let the historical building fool you—Pres belongs squarely in the digital age. Inside our walls are countless technology-based academic opportunities for our students and teachers, from our 3D printers to our all-new Mac lab. We also pioneered a Bring Your Own Device program, allowing students to learn and interact in the classroom via their own tablet or smartphone. Creating a Space Presentation understands how crucial a school's physical environment and resources are to fostering academic excellence. Two recent enhancements to Presentation's campus are the Idea Space, a fun and flexible learning area designed to spark creative thought, and our new physical science lab featuring upgraded workspaces, technology, and safety for an engaging and productive hands-on learning experience. Amelia Kolb HER EXCELLENCE Valedictorian, Miss Presentation, National Honor Society member, and Governor's Scholar, Amelia Kolb has a lot to boast about––were she the boasting type. At Pres, Amelia says, she learned to be "proud of myself and confident in my abilities, while still being humble and not flaunting my achievements." Having always done well in the classroom, Amelia says academics were a major consideration in her choice of high school––she came to the right place. "Pres supported me academically by offering rigorous courses and teachers who were willing to challenge their students," she says. And while Amelia was always strongly encouraged to learn and think critically, she never felt like she was alone in the job. "My teachers and classmates were always there, allowing me to become the best student I could possibly be." While Pres's extraordinary academics strongly influenced Amelia's decision to enroll, ultimately, she says, "the main reason I chose Pres was because of the warm, open attitudes from the students and teachers that made me feel like I belonged." Now Accepting GIRLS WITH HEARTS. IN THEIR AND GIRLS WHO WANT TO START ONE. Helping Every Girl Reach Her Potential Not only does Presentation strive to accept a diverse group of girls––we also dedicate ourselves to ensuring that every one of them succeeds. Our Academic Enhancement Program is designed to meet the needs of students across a spectrum of academic ability and achievement. For talented students seeking to be challenged, our Academic Enhancement Program offers Honors, AP, and dual credit courses. For qualified incoming students who wish to develop higher level thinking skills, a Freshman Honors Seminar is offered to challenge and engage. Presentation's Senior Independent Project, similar in spirit to a college thesis, allows gifted students the opportunity to personalize their learning by exploring their interests at a deeper level. Motivated students with average or above ability may enroll in dual credit courses at Spalding University gaining true collegiate experience before entering college. High school credit may also be earned through the Leadership Internship Program. College-bound students with learning differences enroll in Presentation's FastForward classes and Reading/Writing Labs. These classes meet daily to improve reading skills ensuring that students receive special monitoring to increase opportunities for academic success. Pres has created a study skills course for select students in need of additional support. Our goal at Presentation is to fully engage the minds and hearts of our girls. We strive to provide every student the nurturing and guidance necessary to find her gifts, realize her potential -- challenging her every day to reach higher. Encouraged to make the most of herself and provided all the resources and support she needs, the "average girl" becomes extraordinary at Pres. A BELIEVER, AN ACHIEVER: Tracey P. Lindsey 2015's Youth Achiever of the Year, awarded by YMCA Black Achievers Program, is Presentation's own Tracey P. Lindsey––and what an achiever she is. An honor student at Pres and Vice President of the National Honor Society, Tracey is involved in the Science National Honor Society, STEM Club, Student Council, choir, varsity basketball and track, and has helped conduct the 8th-grade leadership forum for girls all around Kentuckiana. For her accomplishments Tracey has received much recognition, including the Sophia Honor Roll Academic Award, Academic All-State First Team for both track and basketball, and inclusion in Business First's future leaders publication. Tracey's accomplishments are a testament to her family's emphasis on education and hard work, their love and support, and also to the "very encouraging and uplifting environment" at Pres. "Presentation Academy is like my extended family," she says. At Pres, Tracey says, her "potential has definitely expanded." Not only does Pres "encourage you to set high goals for yourself, but they help you to take the steps, both inside and outside the classroom, necessary to reach those goals." At The Ohio State University, where she's starting this fall, Tracey says she plans to carry the lessons and values that her family and Presentation Academy have instilled in her. "I strive to follow in the footsteps of my fellow Pres sisters and make a positive impact." Bright Girls, Big City: Our Downtown Advantage A bustling hub of arts, culture, business, education, and government, downtown Louisville is Presentation's biggest classroom. Pres's proximity to everything downtown has to offer means a bigger, brighter, more inspired education for our girls. A mere stone's throw from campus, students will find historic churches, magnificent architecture, museums, galleries, performance venues, libraries, television and radio stations, government offices, and any number of premier Louisville companies. Presentation takes full advantage of the enrichment and cultural opportunities available, preparing our girls for college and careers in big cities, for those who choose, and for an increasingly complex, fast-moving world. Even when our girls aren't attending a play or visiting a museum, enrolling in a course at Spalding or doing an internship at a downtown business, they can just take in the sights and sounds of this dynamic urban atmosphere. Like Pres itself, downtown Louisville is a great place to learn, grow, and be inspired. It's electric, it's alive, and––just like our girls––it's getting more amazing every day. Now Accepting GOING GLOBAL: Ellie Grantz For graduating senior Ellie Grantz, Pres's dynamic and diverse downtown setting has provided the ideal venue for her interests. As part of Pres's unique partnership with Spalding University, Ellie was able to take a college-level course in Cultural Anthropology––a course that she says opened her mind to a range of different world cultures. "I really enjoyed Cultural Anthropology," she says, "because I want to study International Affairs in college so this class let me explore different cultures in depth like I hope to do in the future." Fittingly, Ellie will be attending American University in Washington, D.C., studying in the School of International Service, though her first semester will be spent in Thessaloniki, Greece. After college she plans on joining the Peace Corps and hopes someday to work as a U.S. diplomat or at the United Nations. Ellie's primary area of interest is in affecting global change through the promotion of safe, clean water. Last summer she was part of a team of Pres Girls who traveled to Costa Rica to install water purification systems. Her senior project focused on water issues in Rio de Janeiro's Gunabara Bay, in turn giving Ellie "a greater understanding of the importance of our work in Costa Rica." For Ellie, what started downtown at Pres––exposure to cultural diversity, an open-minded global perspective––will surely inform her future in exciting and important ways. What's more, she got to hear the Dalai Lama speak at the Kentucky Center, go on lots of inspiring field trips and enjoy "a plethora...of delicious foods." "I love the downtown atmosphere," she says, "and being in the center of everything." Today, Ellie, downtown. Tomorrow, the world. ARTIMMERSION Presentation's art department chair Susanne Firestone ‘01 knows firsthand how much downtown Louisville "amplifies" the school's arts curriculum and our students' experiences. "It is extremely important to immerse the Pres Girls in the downtown Louisville local art scene and for them to see just what this city has to offer." In recent years Pres Girls have helped a local artist paint a Gallopalooza horse for the Derby (currently on display outside Kosair Childrens' Hospital) and created their own glass pieces at Glassworks. The National Art Honor Society was involved in the Louisville Bike Public Sculpture Exhibit, creating original sculptures out of old bicycles for public display. This year, NAHS will work with officials in Smoketown to create markers for historic sites within the neighborhood. Firestone regularly engages her students with gallery hops, museum visits, art festivals, visiting artists, summer art camps, and more––all of it in and around the downtown area. "As an art educator downtown, I have a lot of resources available to me, " says Firestone. "Clearly downtown is an advantage." Now Accepting Sprinters, PITCHERS, Strikers, , ARCHERS SPIKERS, DANCERS, MIDFIELDERS, and GIRLS HAVE FUN. Our Sports Programs Are in a League of Their Own For a large percentage of Pres Girls, one of the most exciting and enriching experiences comes from belonging to one of our athletic teams. We offer 15 varsity sports, with 65% of students participating competitively in our athletic program. 30% of these athletes participate in two or more sports. While not every girl will make every team she tries out for, Pres Girls have many opportunities to participate and compete. From softball to soccer, tennis to lacrosse, cross country to archery, cheerleading to dance, Presentation's athletic programs provide invaluable experiences for leadership and teamwork, while promoting physical, mental and spiritual vibrancy. For Hana, a lifelong athlete who says she can't imagine her life without sports, field hockey was something she only discovered at Pres. "I started playing lacrosse in the 6th grade," she says, but at the time she entered Pres, there was no lacrosse team. "If it weren't for Pres I would have never found my second love," says Hana. Originally, field hockey was something Hana participated in to stay in shape for lacrosse. But now she admits it has become "hard to decide which one I want to pursue at the collegiate level." That decision was made even tougher when Hana was allowed to pursue her passion for lacrosse at Pres. In 2015, Hana was given the opportunity to help start a Topper lacrosse team and be a part of their inaugural season. "The Pres lacrosse team has a bright future," she says," because they have so much support from the Pres community." Athletics were a huge part of Hana's Pres experience, teaching her "teamwork, dedication, determination and mental toughness." Without that level of motivation and support, she says, "I don't know if I would be where I am today." But ultimately, she says, "Getting involved with anything is part of the Pres experience. Pres is where you find yourself." 2014-2015 Revenues 77% 19% 1% 1% 1% Tuition and Fees Gifts and Bequests Other income Athletic income Auxiliary operations (net) 100% Total Revenues $3,157,691 $782,126 $56,475 $39,427 $45,108 $4,080,827 2014-2015 Expenditures 61% 9% 9% 15% 4% 2% Instructional, Salaries and Benefits Buildings and Grounds Operations Administrative Student Financial Aid Development and Communications Athletics 100% Total Expenditures PRESENTATION ACADEMY’S BOARD OF TRUSTEES 2014-2015 Kathleen S.
