LENTEN REGULATIONS
FASTING:
All Catholics between the ages 18 and 59 are bound to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Fasting means limiting oneself
to a single full meal and avoiding food between meals. Two very light meals are permitted.
ABSTINENCE:
All Catholics who have reached their 14th year are bound to Abstain totally from meat on All Fridays of Lent.
EASTER DUTY:
After a person has received First Communion, he or she must receive Communion at least once a year, during the Easter Season. The Easter Season begins with the First Sunday of Lent (Mar. 9th) and continues until Trinity Sunday (June 15th).
Reception of the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession) is encouraged during Lent, especially if you have been away from
Sunday Mass.

The Holy Father speaks……
As Lent draws near, I would like to offer some helpful thoughts on our path of conversion as
individuals and as a community. These insights are inspired by the words of Saint Paul:
“For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake
he became poor, so that by his poverty you might become rich” (2 Cor. 8:9). The Apostle
was writing to the Christian of Corinth to encourage them to be generous in helping the faithful in Jerusalem who were in need. What do these words of St. Paul mean to us Christians today? What does
this invitation to poverty, a life of evangelical poverty, mean for us today?
Instead of being just a church that welcomes and receives by keeping the doors open, let us try also to be a
church that finds new roads, that is able to step outside itself and go to those who do not attend Mass, to those
who have quit or are different.
The lives of the early martyrs Perpetua and Felicity was so popular in the early centuries that their
story known as "The Martyrdom of Perpetua and Felicity," was read during liturgies. We still invoke
their intercession in Eucharist Prayer I.
In Carthage, in the year 203, Perpetua, a 22 year widow, still nursing her child, decided to become a Christian. She did this
even in the face the Emperor Septimus' persecutions. Her father tried to talk her out of her decision. But she told him "See
that [water]pot lying here? Can you call it by any other name than what it is?" When he said no Perpetua responded, "Neither
can I call myself by any other name than what I am, a Christian." Her reply enraged her father who attacked her. She was
then arrested and imprisoned with four others one of whom was a slave, Felicity who was close to giving birth.
In her diary, Perpetua spoke of the stifling conditions and her concerns for her child. She wrote: “What a day of horror! Terrible heat, owing to the crowds! Rough treatment by the soldiers! To crown all, I was tormented with anxiety for my baby....
Such anxieties I suffered for many days, but I obtained leave for my baby to remain in the prison with me, and being relieved
of my trouble and anxiety for him, I at once recovered my health, and my prison became a palace to me and I would rather
have been there than anywhere else.”
Felicity gave birth to a girl who was raised by a Christian family, a few days before the games commenced.
For their refusal to renounce their Christian faith, they were sent to the public games in the amphitheater. The women were
stripped and made to face a rabid heifer. The crowd, seeing their condition, especially Felicity’s, were horrified. The women
were taken and dressed and hen tossed back into the arena so roughly that they were bruised and hurt. Perpetua, though
confused and distracted, still was thinking of others and went to help Felicity up. The two of them stood side by side as all five
martyrs had their throats cut.
Perpetua's last words were to her brother: "Stand fast in the faith and love one another."
Prayer:
Saints Perpetua and Felicity, watch over all mothers and children who are separated from each other because of war or persecution. Show a special care to mothers who are imprisoned and guide them to follow your example of faith and courage. Amen

VIII DOMINGO DEL TIEMPO ORDINARIO
Jesús aconseja hoy en el Evangelio a sus apóstoles de maera que sigan sus enseñanzas y no las del mundo, vivimos entre el pueblo de Dios,
somos poseedores de su amor y no hay necesidad de preocupación alguna por lo que vendra
mañana. El futuro nos agobia, es acaso esto el reino de Dios que esperamos? O
la felicidad tan anhelada que buscamos desmedidamente? La belleza se ha convertido en algo de primera necesidad, como sustento basico para vivir, vanidad
es lo que corroe en muchos casos nuestro Corazón, pero al final nos damos
cuenta que Dios lo es todo y solo el no da a poseer la inmensa felicidad, la
belleza eterna de nuestras almas, la fortuna de ser herederos de su reino, sin necesidad de pensar en el mañana. Vivir el dia a dia es suficiente, pues este trae
consigo sus propias preocupaciones y todo esto puesto en manos de Dios y
Maria Santisima se convierten en una carga ligera para nuestras vidas. Hagamos
el proposito de dejar de lado lo que nos preocupa y venir hasta el altar frente al
Santisimo Sacramento donde a sus pies dejaremos nuestras angustias y
tristezas, nuestras alegrias y nuestras penas, demos gracias cada dia por el milagro inmenso de la vida y compartir con ello la inmensa felicidad de ser
llamados hijos de Dios.

Rosary Society
The Rosarians welcome all women of the Parish. The Society
is dedicated to the Blessed Mother, the growth of the love of
God through Mary. We honor the Blessed Mother by the constant and reverent praying of the rosary in our daily life.
We are involved in all Parish activities, liturgical and social –
and keep informed about civic community activities.
Spiritual activities include an Annual Retreat, Annual Communion Breakfast and Baby Shower for Unwed Mothers. The Society raises money to help our Church continue outreach efforts.
The fundraisers include: Christmas Fair, Basket Night, Chinese
Auction.
We attend the 10:00am Mass on the Third Sunday of the
month (except July & August) followed by a meeting & light
breakfast in the School.

The present Holy Name Society members dedicate themselves to corporal works in helping our Parish Organizations
and School, with various fundraising. The Holy Name meets
every second Sunday of each month (after the 10 a.m.
Mass), except for July & August.
Men of all ages are welcome, especially the fathers of children attending St. A’s School and Catholic War Veterans

CARMELITES THIRD ORDER OF ST. ATHANASIUS PARISH:
Lay Carmelites meet on the second Saturday of the month.
The meeting is held in the Rectory basement at 10:00 A.M.
after 9:00 A.M. Mass.

in a religious community, but are men and women, married
or single, who are people of faith in our parish and wish to
live the charism of prayer and devotion to Our Lady in the

Bereavement Support meet on Monday, March 3,10,17,24
from 7:30 - 9:00 p.m. in the Nazareth Institute. On Tuesday

Gamblers Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women
who share their experience, strength and hope with each
other that they may solve their common problem and help
others to recover from a gambling problem. Meeting every
Friday night at 7:30p.m. in the Nazareth Institute.
Overeaters Anonymous members talk about their struggles with compulsive eating. Meeting every Wednesday
night at 8:00p.m. in the Nazareth Institute.
Is your life effected by someone who is drinking? To help
them, you must first help yourself. Al-Anon helps families
and friends of alcoholics recover from the effects of living
with the problem drinking of a relative or friend.
Our Al-Anon Group meets in the Nazareth Institute every

In order for designated Parish Ministries & Organizations to reserve one of our rooms at St. A’s, we require you to fill out our Parish Calendar & Room Request Form. The form is available in the rectory or can be downloaded from our website. We even
have an E-form so you complete this form without writing. Just e-mail it back to us, or print it out and drop it off. All Requests
must be made using our form. E-mail completed form to AnnaMarie Scuteri at annamariesta@hotmail.com. This is the ONLY
way to reserve a room here at St. A's. The group listed on the parish calendar is the group that has the right to use that
space. If you are not a designated ministry of our parish, permission must be granted from our Pastor, Msgr. Cassato, a rental
fee is paid, and a lease agreement completed in order to use space.
Sunday Bulletin Deadlines The Sunday Bulletin must be e-mailed to our printer by 10a.m. Monday. All announcements must be
submitted in WRITTEN form only (handwritten, typed, computer, fax, e-mailed, etc) by 3p.m. Friday. Announcements received
after the deadline will be published the following week. No one on the parish staff will assume the responsibility for your ministry’s
articles. Include your bulletin articles in your advance planning for your event. All Flyers need to be approved by a staff member
and submitted by Email only to MrsAthanasius@aol.com.
