While at the l'lichigan State Archives, a shoe box of unidentified pictures was given to one of our members. Among them was "MIRAsr taken in Ludlow, Vt. The Saginaw (t"tichigan) Genealogical Society tries to assist in such a case, for pictures found inthis area. I thought the Vermont Genealogical Society might be able to find out whose grand or greatgrandmother she was. On the back of the original it says-- Photographed by A. BIXBY, M D Ludlow, VT negatives preserved. And handwritted, it says-- Mira, Windsor County No one seems to know her surname. Can anyone identify her?? If so please contact our archivist, Mrs Florence Lawson, 26 Spruce Street, Brattleboro, Vt 05301 as she has the original **** = 4 L = Nafe, f,nr ilas6/4nlr^ ,. i !'. ' : ' . The president of the association of 200 members was Dr H D Allen, one of later Rutlandrs oldest and nost respected citizens \nd it was 1n his office that the association was organized and fater on this same office witnessed the making of the plat which was such an irnportant 1n the factor origin The oband founding of the village. ject of this assoclation was to buy government land in the west, preferably in Iowa, and there 1ay out a town and then move to this Eldorado. This assoc. had 12 trustees president, 3 of whom were the officers, plans had When thelr secretary & treasurer. been completed Dr Al1en and W B Burns were chosen to come west to make an investigation and buy land, acting under the direction of the association. They came to Chicago by rai1, then to Galena & Dubuque, and after traveling over most of fowa, I4innesota, Wlsconsin and part of fllinoJ-s they returned to Vermont with their news; it fell Like a damper on the assoc. and severaL of the 200 men, being discouraged and disheartenbd, withdrew from the assoc. But the rest of these New England speculators were not to be outdone, so 1t was not J.ong before Dr Allen & Dr Burns made another trip west and this time they suceeded in buying eighty acres of land where Rutland now is located, part of it from the Ill-inois CentraL Railroad and part from the government. They then returned to their homes and later new a plat was made for,the town, finally in November 1855 D F Hitt, the county surveyor of Lasalle County, lald out the little village. W B Burns, Dr H D Allen, John Emery, and Daniel Wadleigh, Zimri funes, James Kirkaldee Amos Way, and Willard Proctor, with their famj-1ies, then came from the New England States to settle i-n this new western v111age D r A . l I. e n b u i . l t a l a r g e f r a m e h o u s e e a s t o f the railroad, where he and Mrs Allen and h1s (Mr and son, M D Allen, and family resided. This was the first hotel that was ever built ln Rutl-and, and j"t was burned to the ground in the fire which swept away so many business houses in February 1896. J H whlpple was j-ts proprietor at the time of lts destruction. Mr Burns also erected 2 houses near the hotel; one of them being where Banker M C Roe lj-ved, and now Mrs Charl-es Jacobs resides there; and the other just east of it where George Dolen and farnily resided; and rt is now the house where is located. Not the telephone company office much can be gathered concerning Mr Burns I li-fe. Willard Proctor moved to Proctor f"l-linois. The town seemed to grow very sLowly and in ]861, there were not more than a dozen houses that dotted the prairie and showed where the village of RutLand nestled. There was no depot on the railroad, and only a sma1l section house a llttl-e south of what is now the present village was provided for the section men on the railroad. In 1865 a subscription amounting to over of S1,600 was raised by the businessmen was Rutland and the rnill at Panola Ii. linois It was then torn down arid rebuilt bought. It was purchased in 1875 by Emerson Hakes, who thoroughJ.y refitted it and carried on a good business until August l-883 when it was utterly destroyed by fire. The total loss was estimated at s 1 0o , oo. The officers of the township during the year 1857 were undoubtedJ-y the fj-rst officers of the township: W B Burns was elected SuperJohn Wadleigh, Clerk; Geo W Gray, visor; Assessor; and S M Scott, Collector. Rutland was incorporated in as a village 1857, and took it,s name from the city of its birth, Rutland Vermont. It $/as called New Rutland until- about the year l-8?3 when the village authorj-ties changed the name to Rutland. Among the stockholders were John Brevoort, Dr Allen, C P Thompson, W B Burns, Charles Weeks J Coffman, and J J Roe. For some reason, how ever, the work was not continued, and the shaft was abandoned. Later it was worked by F W Burns and Co. One of thg largest stockholders, John Brevoort, then took it up and 1878 when he carried on a good business until sold it the Wi-l11an Maher. Afterwards it was bought by Milton Roe and Emerson Hakes and in 1885, Mr Roe sold out to Mr Hakes, who then sunk the new coal shaft and used the ofd one for the ai-r shaft. The new shaft was 500 feet deep. Mr Hakes carried on the mining interest and employed about 25O or 300 men -in the mine. The flrst by store burlding was erected John Wadleigh in 1859, on the corner where George Austinrs brick store was (now Gapents Hardware). The Wadlerqh Bui"ldlnq was des- 56 troyed by fire in 1899. Brown How swiftly, by; time is fleeting How fast, wetre growing old; Soon we, shall in the church-yard lie, So silent, pale, and cold, But while on earth, welll all be gay, Nor brood, orre sorrows past, For thererll than day, be no more nlght, Whi-le life, and being, 1ast. Tune, Auld Lang Syne The absent, thor from us so far, To us, are ever near, With no rude GATES, their course to bar, We hoped to meet them here. Our GATES are all so good and strong, No foe can enter in To lead us in the path of wrong, Thror artfulness and sirr. We come today, from far and near, to unite As brothers, Round this old homestead, ever dear, And precious , in our sight. In yon old Cotr our Grandsires dwelt, Wj-thin those walls they died, Around that hearth in prayer they knelt, Their little ones beside. One hundred years, or more have fJ.own, Since Simon, young and gay, Took sweet Susanna, for his own, Ti1l called by death away. Fj-ve generations fill the space, An honor to the town, That we in history can trace, By Glazier, handed down. We think of those with fond regret, In death, so coLd and still, That once lj-ke us, together met, On this the "Old Beech Hill'r, And orre these fields, so broad and fiar, In childhood, oftr they played, Tr11 freed from every earthly care, Thror I{eavenly Gates, they strayrd. We may not all, meet here again, Our voices to unite, Thor every link in friendships chain, Will shine with purer light. And when we I re cal l ed to that bless I d I and, Where parting i-s no more, Wer11 take each other by the hand, And walk the golden shore. //// I have the original poem in my keeping - it was kindly given to me by l"1rs Dorothy (cates) Hawklns. Irve been working on the GATES genealogy for several years now and have never seen anythlng quite l-ike this poem. Unfortunately the Simon and Susanna Gates it mentions are Perhaps some of not of my line, 1n the way of further i-nformation. so f can provlde litt1e our readers woul-d know more.
